En arumai thambi, (My dearest brother),

There was his sister’s handwriting, Arulmozhi thought, smiling. He had finished packing everything he required, and would be leaving Thanjai for Thirunallam and Pazhayarai the next morning. 

Eppadi irukkirai, kanne? (How are you, my dear?)

Unnai kaanamal kan vaadivittadhu, thambi. Aanalum, kangalai kulirum pol thuliyai enakku en thozhi irukkiral. (Without seeing you, brother, my eyes have withered. But even then, I have my friend who brings coolness to my eyes). 

Arulmozhi blinked.

He had definitely expected his Akka to start talking about the Kodumbalur Ilavarasi, but he had never expected such words. It made him even more curious about this Princess, who could cool his sister’s eyes as if she were drops of fresh water. 

Avalai patri pesinal, pesi konde irukkalam (If I talk about her, I will keep talking about her). 

Adakkamai, anaivaridhathil anbu seluthum pen en Vanathi (She is very humble, and is very loving to every person, such is my Vanathi). 

Arulmozhi raised an eyebrow, surprised by the words his sister used. She rarely minced words when it came to talking to him, and yet… he was reading flowery praises from his sister? His Akka?

The same one who wielded words as a weapon and managed to out debate everyone?

She was writing flowery praises?

Who again was this Princess?

Seri adhai vidu, sandhikkum podhu avalai unakku arimugam seidhu veikkiren (Okay leave that, I will introduce you to her when we meet). 

He knew this was coming. 

He just did not expect it to be so early into the letter. He could not help the curiosity that overtook him now, when he thought of the Kodumbalur Ilavarasi. 

“Akka, why do you know me so well?” he sighed, understanding that she had used truthful praises in a way that would completely intrigue him, just as it had now. He did not want marriage, and he was not even that sure about love or its matter. 

Maybe he would consider it under other circumstances, but… no, no love for him. 

Nodding to himself,he checked his things once more, ensuring that he was ready to leave for Thirunallam first thing in the morning.

“Thodudaiya seviyan vidaiyeriyor thoo ven madi soodi,” the Princess sang as she plucked flowers with a gentleness that even most Princesses did not have. It seemed like the Princess treated the flower as she would her friend, and asked permission in her own ways to pluck them.

Vaanathi had come to Thirunallam with her dear Akka Kundavai, who had taken her under her guidance when Vaanathi’s periappa, the Periya Velar of Kodumbalur had brought Vaanathi to the Ilaya Piratti, requesting the Princess to keep her as a companion, for it was always an honour to be the friend of the Ilaya Piratti. Kundavai also trained her friends in various art forms she knew in ways they did not, making them complete Princesses, ready for marriage with one of her two brothers or any other royal, the latter less important in the spectrum. 

At present, the two of them had come to visit Sembiyan Madevi, who had taken one look at Vaanathi and had insisted that she call her as Patti. She and Kundavai Akka had also mentioned Ponniyin Selvar very frequently around her, making her blush now at the very thought of him. 

She had a guess that their thoughts ventured towards her marrying him, which made her feel like they were almost mistaken somehow, because much like everyone in her Kingdom, she had been brought up on the brilliance of Arulmozhi Varman, his godly stature and behaviour, his Bhakti for his parents, grandmother, elder siblings and people, of his love for Chozha Nadu, of how ideal he was. She had heard of him as if he were a God, and she grew up with that thought too, thus. 

In fact, she knew it was that, as Akka had recently been discussing her marriage very heavily with her, and Ponniyin Selvar had been dropped into the conversations all too often. His valour and behaviour, his love for elephants and the Ponni, everything her Akka had told her, only increasing her intense wish to see the Prince at least once in her life. 

Vaanathi had never forced her wishes on anyone, and despite being so dear to Kundavai, she never used that to her advantage, choosing instead to allow Kundavai to suggest things to her, and then doing her best to follow through. She knew her very presence angered many of the companions of Kundavai, but every time she tried to move away from Akka to give the others time with the latter, Kundavai Akka somehow manages to put a stop to it, thus not allowing Vaanathi all that far from her, instead teaching her all that Kundavai knew, choosing the shy Princess as her preferred companion. 

Vanathi was neither blind nor dumb, and she had seen the flash of dislike in the eyes of some of  Kundavai’s companions when she was around, none liking how the Kodumbalur Princess had stolen Kundavai’s heart with her genuine, sweet behaviour. Vaanathi did her best not to let their behaviour affect her, her heart managing to forgive them each time. 

“Kanne, don’t always have such a large heart,” Kundavai often said, but the fondness and sparkle in her eyes told Vanathi that she was in fact impressed by Vaanathi, which always made the latter feel bashful. She was nothing much to be impressed about, she always felt. 

That is why, every time Akka brought up her marriage, she felt shyer than usual, especially given who they wanted her to marry. She had seen the flash of affection and acceptance of Sembiyan Patti’s face as well, and that made her feel pure joy, for the aged Queen is a great Shiva Bhakta, and if a Shiva Bhakta liked her, it meant she had done something good in life. 

“Kanne! Come here!”

Kundavai’s sweet nightingale voice called Vaanathi, and she immediately took the flowers she had plucked, reaching the Ilaya Piratti, who had simply become Akka to her from the day they had met, Vaanathi always traveling as Kundavai’s shadow.
