Allison Newell inherited some plates from her grandmother— and also a PHD.

“My grandma, Joan, taught me the value of pride, hustle, and desire—her own version of a PHD,” Allison said. “You could accomplish anything if you had these three things. I carry this sentiment with me and know she would be proud of me. “

To keep that message present, Allison turned four of her grandmothers beloved Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates into Heirloomist art for the family kitchen. Christmas was Joan’s favorite time of year and she went to great lengths to make it memorable for the entire family.

Joan passed away on Christmas Eve of 2012. The family is still living out all the parts of Joan they loved.

“My Grandma was born and raised in Chicago and she was so proud of my sister and I, who also ended up making it home,” Allison said. And here is perhaps the most charming part.

“We all still gather on Christmas Eve to celebrate and sing The Muppets “12 Days of Christmas” song each year in her honor, a song she made her entire family sing every year. You can imagine how uncool this was in my teenage years,” Allison said. “But her love for Christmas lives on in the Crawford Tribe.”
