5th June Muggsy’s  Clarion

Unfortunately, since the loss of our beloved ANN(Matron) the May Newsletter did not happen, as she was our point of call with all the relevant information. There had been talked that things might not continue in the same way as before but John has volunteered to take on the responsibility that was once Ann’s domain and in a very  similar imitable way. There had also been some doubt as to whether the newsletter would continue but both Jackie (Roof) and myself (Muggsy) are willing to carry on  as we feel that it is an important and vital means of communication for all members of the Group. So if anyone has anything that they wish to contribute to the Newsletter, please be sure to contact John.

Ann Hartley (Matron)

Ann’s funeral was  very moving and there were so many friends, work colleagues and Group members in attendance at the Holy Trinity Church followed on by the internment at Snodland Cemetry. Everyone in attendance was invited back to the Tovil Working Men’s Club for some food and drink courtesy of her family to share the celebration of her life  and recall many memories. Many made contributions to the M.S.G. and the Group was very thankful. The Group also wished Ann’s son Martin  all the best in his quest to move forward and to become settled in life following the recent trial and tribulations caused by his mother’s illness and demise.

Ann will be sadly missed by so many people as she’d was always there to give as helping hand to so many of us,Rest in Peace Ann

Dennis and Joan Dean

It’s also with sad regret that we have to announce the passing away off Joan Dean on Sunday 27th May, just 59 days after the passing of her husband Dennis. The Group would like to offer Sue Dean and her family our sincere condolences.We hope that Sue and her partner, Mick, will continue to be part of the Maidstone Stroke Group and for them to know that they are most welcome.

Finance

As everyone is aware, the M.S.G. is a self funding Group and it has been brought to our attention that there are a few issues that need to be addressed to keep the Group running on an even keel. A suggestion has been put forward that we introduce a subscription to the Group, as indeed  most social groups have and ask that everyone who attends the fortnightly Tuesday meetings pay £! per person. The Group would like to know of the thoughts and comments on this suggestion.

Register of Attendance

As you are aware, Ann always kept a Register of attendance, not only for information and benefit but also for a health and safety reason. This will continue by either Kathy, John or a new appointee.

Photographs

Whenever there was an outing or an event, Matron always liked photographs to be taken and these were passed round at a later meeting and the consigned to albums kept in John’s cupboard at Tovil and information could be gleaned whenever necessary. In recent years these photographs have been taken by our resident David Bailey, Ann Judge but unfortunately Ann has decided to hang up her camera. This is a tradition that we need to keep going and so need a new photographer.

Contact Details

Matron via Jackie and I also tried to keep everyone’s  contact details updated on a regular basis. Things like , address, phone numbers,either land line or mobile and E-mail addresses if any and Peter Fenton will now be bringing the current list upto date, so any new details need to be passed onto him as soon as possible.

Trips and Outings

John would like to bring to our attention the issues of trips and outings and the way that most of them are subsidised. As you are no doubt aware the Group has lost quite a few members of late and has become a much smaller unit. Therefore  the cost of hiring a coach for small numbers becomes very expensive and we need to keep a healthy bank. So it’s been suggested that in the immediate future the Group will only subsidise  the Christmas Dinner  and the annual trip to Brick Lane, as these are the two  that have the greatest attendance. Any other trip will paid as the going rate, including coach hire and hence unsubsidised .  There will also be a new ruling that once a deposit is paid or the trip is fully paid - unless one has a stand in or there are mitigating circumstances- then and only then will monies be returned. This has to be the case as this ruling has always been in place. and on so many occasions John has been left out of pocket.

Fund raising

On the question of fundraising, John and Richard (Tricky) have been very busy trying to raise money(which is always ongoing) on behalf of the Group to help with events and outings. Application forms are currently in at ASDA local stores at Kingshill and Bluebell Hill, also at Waitrose, Allington, Paddock Wood, Kingshill and Ashford. If there are anymore ideas or can get donations and decent gifts to be raffled or auctioned please contact John.

Maidstone Hospital Stroke Unit

As mentioned above regarding the Group and it’s diminishing size, John has been in contact with the Stroke Unit in Maidstone Hospital. He has spoken to Alice Abed, an Occupational therapist and to Toni Barker, as Speech and Language therapist  who may be able to give us some leads and names of interested . John left some point of contact literature and hand outs related to the Groups activities and laminated posters for the notice board.

There was also mention of some business cards being printed for all too have for the occasion when one meets a stroke survivor who may be interested in joining the Group. These cards would have all the necessary contact details.

M.S.G. “up with the good” blog and FaceBook

Are you aware that the M.S.G. has a blog and one can access this by just googling Maidstone Stroke Group  and then scrolling down until you see “up with the good” and the click on that and once you’ve passed  Peter Fenton’s history of the Group one can catch with current posts. Richard (Tricky) regularly updates this with all relevant data including photographs and the Group is also available on FaceBookm and one can catch up with what other Stroke Groups are up to.

20th Anniversary

The 20th Anniversary will take place on Friday 28th September 2018 at Tovil Working Men’s Club commencing at 19.17 for members, family, friends and carers

It would be a nice gesture to not involve ourselves with the catering and ask the Tovil Club to do that.

It has been suggested that numbered tickets should be printed and at a cost of £10 will only be handed out on receipt of the full amount.

It would be good to have an upmarket raffle with about 6/10 Star Prizes only and at a cost of £2 A TICKET.

John has organised to bring along Geoff Stevens to entertain us and many of us must have seen his performance at the Dog and Duck at Pluck’s Gutter.

Mereworth Luncheon Club

Please note that Kathy Rirchie is currently on holiday and so will not be attending the meeting on 5th June. There is, however, a meeting of the Mereworth Luncheon Club at Mereworth Vollage Hall on the 19th June that helps raise money for the Group. John usually attends but unfortunately Kathy and Peter will attend as it clashes with a Group meeting on the same day

Bob Sawyer and Viv Sinclair

As you might have noticed that Bob and Viv have not been able to attend the Group meetings of late. Viv has not been of the best of health and after a long conversation wuth Bob the other day Richard found out thatv Viv appears to be getting better and gradually coming out of her general maslaise  and we may see them soon, The Group sends them all our best wishes.

Lastly a big thank you for your patience and understanding, as the Group  has gone through a very difficult time in the first half of this year and a lot of things have had to be put on hold or even neglected.Apologies for the length of this Newsletter but John, Kathy and Peter are working very hard to get back on track and their recent meeting had some lengthy thoughts for the Group to chew over.
