The complete list of Easter Eggs in "The Thing About"
As promised on my AO3 account, here's the complete list of Easter Eggs that I scattered into my The Thing About Harry Fanfiction, "The Thing About".
Chapter 1:
- Harry singing Shawn Mendes is a reference to Harry's Shawn Mendes vest top in the motel scene in the film.
- Shawn's song "If I Can't Have You" is also played over the scene where Harry runs to the rally to confess his love for Sam.
- Sam loving Grey's Anatomy is a reference to Jake Borelli's role as Levi Schmitt in Grey's Anatomy.
Chapter 2:
- Not really an egg but Stasia's Toy Story pyjamas are a reference to Harry's favourite film being "Up", as revealed in the motel scene.
Chapter 3:
- Reference to the Chvrches concert - the opening of the film has "Here With Me" by Marshmello and Chvrches over the pan of the city and then into Sam's room.
Chapter 4:
- Britt Baron voices Tifa in the "Final Fantasy VII Remake", hence the Final Fantasy game on the PlayStation.
Chapter 5:
- Stasia loving Kate Nash is a reference to GLOW, the show Britt Baron and Kate Nash both starred in, as Justine Biagi and Rhonda Richardson respectively.
Chapter 6:
- Troye Sivan is on the soundtrack of the film - "What A Heavenly Way To Die" plays in the motel scene.
Chapter 8:
- Another tenuous link but the previous Freeform Original movie, "Same Time, Next Christmas" has protagonists named Olivia and Jeff (yes, I have seen too many Freeform Original Movies. No I will not be commenting further at this time.).
Chapter 9:
- Harry being a Jock zombie is because Harry initially plays into the "dumb promiscuous Jock" stereotype (obviously this is unravelled during the film.).
- Sam is a Doctor because Grey's Anatomy and Jake Borelli's role as Levi Schmitt.
Chapter 13:
- Stasia is seen being a commitment-phobe throughout the film until she meets Zach, but I wanted there to be emotional reasoning behind this.
Chapter 14:
- So generally I tried to make their dreams align with their characters?
- Stasia wanting to travel I just felt fitted with her, her not wanting to settle down etc.
- Sam running for Council Elections or work in a Political capacity is because he has a politics degree, and is seen working for various candidates throughout the film (e.g. Nadia Kusto for Mayor).
- Zach wanting to be a chef is a reference to Japhet Balaban's role in the short film "Bitter Melons", where he plays Brett.
- Harry says in the Motel scene that all he's ever known is that he definitely wants kids.
Chapter 15:
- On the road trip, Sam ends up swerving and nearly hitting a truck, leading to Stasia calling him "a fucking awful driver".
- The "road trip to hell" is the road trip to Liberty where Sam drives Harry to Kelly and Kris's engagement party.
Chapter 16:
- Sam and Harry's ties (blush and crimson) are a reference to the coloured suits they wear to Stasia and Zach's wedding towards the end of the film.
- Stasia wearing a suit to Sam and Harry's wedding is a reference to her wedding outfit.
- "You can never fall in love with your best friend" is Sam's past situation with Malcolm which is referenced throughout the film. That you shouldn't date friends because you end up losing a friend and a partner.
- Sam and Harry's honeymoon to Barbados is due to Niko Terho's recent trip there (there are pictures on his Instagram).
Chapter 17:
- I assumed most of you would make this link, but to me, Amy is the baby we see at the end of the film! She's played by Jake Borelli's IRL niece.
- Scab the dog is two Britt Baron references. The first is Justine's wrestling persona in GLOW is Scab. Britt Baron also owns a Pitbull in real life. (again there are pictures on her Instagram).
- Casey is Sam's roommate, who is played by Peter Paige (who also wrote and directed the movie!).
I think that's everything! Thank you all for reading, I appreciate all the love I have got on this fic.
This film deserves all the love it gets.

REALLY LONG CHARACTER SURVEY » Reese Farouel
RULES. Repost, don’t reblog! Tag 10! Good luck!
TAGGED BY. @to-the-voiceless
TAGGING.@fivebrights and anyone else who wants to do it since the rest of flowr has been tagged
BASICS.
FULL NAME : Charalise Farouel
NICKNAME : Reese, which she uses instead of her actual first name. It stuck.
AGE : 28
BIRTHDAY : 28th day of the 6th umbral moon (12/28)
ETHNIC GROUP : Elezen / Wildwood and Duskwight parentage
NATIONALITY : Sharlayan
LANGUAGE / S : Eorzean Common, Sharlayan, and bits of some niche languages.
ORIENTATION : Bi (is inexperienced with the concept of polyamory but might be willing to try if it comes up)
RELATIONSHIP STATUS : In flowrverse (our fc where we are All wol)) she’s most likely taken by Haurchefant because there’s absolutely no fucking way he’d die on her watch. In-game universe is less concrete, her self esteem is quite low so she doesn’t actively seek relationships but she’s prone to getting crushes easily; Urianger being one of them.
HOME TOWN / AREA : The Sharlayan Colony, Dravania
CURRENT HOME : A small cottage on the very fringes of the Lavender Beds. Also technically Fortemps manor and her room in the Pendants.
PROFESSION : Scholar (in the literal sense), Adventurer, and Warrior of Light
PHYSICAL.
HAIR : Café au lait blonde. She used to have it quite long, reaching past her hips, not styled in any specific way but brushed at least. After the Seventh Umbral Calamity she’s kept it quite short for practical purposes and usually hacks away at it herself, much to her friend Lunya’s chagrin.
EYES : Almond shaped eyes of deep blue with a halo of gold around the pupil, accentuated by her thick brows which are uncommon for most Elezen.
FACE : An oval shaped face with a tall, straight nose. Not overly animated in her expressions since the calamity.
LIPS : Has somewhat pouty lips and a bad habit of lip biting
COMPLEXION : Fair skin that freckles easily, she has the ability to tan but makes sure to apply salves to her skin before leaving for areas with more intense sunlight. Lots of moles, with a few noticeable ones on her face.
BLEMISHES : None that are noticeable
SCARS : A Lot. She has a very prominent scar across her back which she usually likes to cover up.
TATTOOS : None. She enjoys seeing other people’s tattoos but wouldn’t get one for herself, she hates feeling stuck with something.
HEIGHT : Average height for an Elezen at around 6′3″
WEIGHT : 180 lbs give or take, most of it is muscle
BUILD : Tall and lean, quite muscular but not very toned. Her muscles were built more for purpose and less for show, like a power lifter. She could probably roundhouse kick someones head clean off. Pear shaped.
FEATURES : Her prominent brows and two moles beside her right eye
ALLERGIES : No known allergies, but she can get sick very easily.
USUAL HAIR STYLE : When it was long she usually just wore it down and free flowing, she does the same with her short hair although it doesn’t flow as much.
USUAL FACE LOOK : Her expression is usually quite stoic with a hint of Very Tired to spice things up. Is known frequently to come down with a case of RBF
USUAL CLOTHING : Loose tunics and some fitted trousers and boots when she’s sitting around researching or not doing much, she’ll just pile on armour as needed. Starts to wear things that are a bit more form fitting or aesthetically pleasing as she becomes more comfortable with herself.
PSYCHOLOGY.
FEAR / S : Heights, being trapped, death, death of loved ones, failure, being abandoned, and... spiders
ASPIRATION / S : To just be... content. Surrounded by people she loves and who earnestly love her in return.
POSITIVE TRAITS : Empathetic, resilient, compassionate, she is the unstoppable force and the immovable object.
NEGATIVE TRAITS : She is the unstoppable force and the immovable object. Tends to bottle her feelings and has a hard time trusting people. Self-sacrificing. Low self worth.
MBTI : INFP-T (Mediator)
ZODIAC : Althyk (Capricorn)
TEMPERAMENT : Cross between phlegmatic and melancholic
SOUL TYPE / S : Server
ANIMALS : Dire wolf, lioness, sparrow
VICE HABIT / S: Prone to bouts of just... lying there. Doesn’t sleep very well so she ends up half finishing a lot of things.
FAITH : Unsure
GHOSTS ? : Yes.
AFTERLIFE ? : Possibly
REINCARNATION ? : Possibly
ALIENS ? : Anything’s possible!
POLITICAL ALIGNMENT : She really doesn’t like thinking about politics after being absolutely smothered by The Bibliothecs. Very left leaning
EDUCATION LEVEL : Received a proper education at the Studium in Old Sharlayan, sponsored by a certain Archon. Her interests were too varied to become an Archon and was constantly belittled for her niche areas of study. If she only applied herself...
FAMILY.
FATHER : Barnimonchet Farouel. (Status Unknown) Archon Barnimonchet was the foremost expert on aetherytes and aetherical travel. Having led repairs to multiple aetheryte systems across Eorzea and a member of the Antitower excursion team, he drifted (literally) quite frequently between the Studium and the colony. Despite his meek nature and tendency to ramble, there is no doubting that he was worthy of the title of Archon.
MOTHER : Nenne Farouel née Phillone (Status Unknown) Archon Nenne was a master in the studies of all things alchemical, including potions, crystal structures, and inks for grimoires and tomes. Her preferred area of study was researching ways to better the body and mind, noting the aetherical compositions of different beings and brewing revitalizing concotions; especially her recent invention which coined the term "Craftman's Tea", creating the recipe as a way to help her husband in his work. She often found herself in the Arboretum gathering ingredients and helping out her fellows tasked with groundskeeping, scolding tones of "Barn!" could be frequently heard echoing through the Telmatology quarter as her husband and formerly mentioned Archon fumbled his way through the vined walkways to visit her.
SIBLINGS : None
EXTENDED FAMILY : No knowledge of extended blood family. The closest she had to a parental figure was Archon Louisoix who had originally offered to babysit her as a babe when her parents left on orders to study an aetherical disturbance, after which they disappeared. He took on the role as a surrogate parent for her, having no trust in Sharlayan’s current care system. Takes on an older sibling role with the younger scions.
NAME MEANING / S : I named her Reese Peepo because I like Reese’s Pieces and the peepo video was popular at the time. Charalise is a nonsense name I gave her to fit in with why she’s Reese.
HISTORICAL CONNECTION ?: none
FAVORITES.
BOOK : She loves history books with any knowledge predating the fourth astral era, and has been known to read the occasional romance novel when no one is looking. Has grown to hate learning about anything Allagan.
DEITY : No specific deity
HOLIDAY : Starlight Celebration
MONTH : October (Fifth umbral moon)
SEASON : Fall/Winter
PLACE : Urth’s Gift
WEATHER : Rain
SOUND / S: Wind blowing through the trees, crackling of firewood, morning bird calls, the cello
SCENT / S : Clean laundry, freshly baked goods, flowers, cut grass
TASTE / S : Savoury, warm spices, nothing too sweet
FEEL / S : Heavy blankets, smooth crystal, soft leaves
ANIMAL / S : All
NUMBER : none
COLORS : Earthy colours and the blue of the ocean on a clear day
EXTRA.
TALENTS : Gardening, sword fighting, art, singing (she usually does it by herself), healing magic
BAD AT : Staying level headed, opening up, decorating, fashion
TURN ONS : Honesty, good sense of humour, kindness
TURN OFFS : Cruelty, making fun of her interests, being ignored, arrogance
HOBBIES : Researching lost civilizations, anything creative, cooking
TROPES : Rage Breaking Point, It Sucks to Be the Chosen One, Big Fucking Sword, Adorkable, Conveniently an Orphan, Friend to All Living Things, Broken Hero, I Just Want to Be Loved, Badass Bookworm
QUOTES :
MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie, what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about?
A1 : Probably a LOTR-esque high fantasy adventure movie
Q2 : What would their soundtrack/score sound like?
A2 : Lots of cello and choir pieces
Q3 : Why did you start writing this character?
A3 : She’s basically my self insert but with a little extra Oomph
Q4 : What first attracted you to this character?
A4 : She’s basically my self insert
Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse.
A5 : She’s not very expressive, she’s not used to being super goofy or anything which I am
Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse?
A6 : Lots
Q7 : How does your muse feel about you?
A7 : Probably pretty chill, would probably go and get pizza together
Q8 : What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with?
A8 : Haurchefant intentionally or unintentionally tends to break her stony facade with his ceaseless flirting and a barrage of compliments which usually ends up with Reese either cracking a little smile or turning beet red and abruptly leaving the room. He brings out the morosexual in her. She instantly becomes brighter than the sun when she’s around anyone far younger than her, switching to a more motherly persona. Alphinaud and Alisaie receive the brunt of her affections before Ryne comes along. Neither will admit to the fact they both actually enjoy it.
Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse?
A9 : Honestly listening to LOZ music since she’s basically Link but a little bit to the left
Q10 : How long did this take you to complete?
A10 : F.....four days

Another Get to Know Me Tag
I’m procrastinating like a motherfucker right now because I’ve got ToTL and other fanfics to work on and three essays I’ve gotta write for school and my brain is just going ‘No! None of that! Something else!’ so I’m doing a tag challenge to get my head back in the game.
I wasn’t tagged by anyone, I just felt like doing it. I’ll tag @idontgiveaflyinggrayson69 because I thought you might like this but no pressure because it's a long one and IDK if you’d want to answer it all.
1. What is your full name?
I don’t give my name out online, but my online name is Crystal. If I had to pick a last name for my online persona, I’d probably pick Kyle or Celestial. Both of them are equally stupid and ridiculous, but they're last names of some of my favorite OC’s throughout the years and I’d love to have either one.
2. What is your nickname?
Cry. My partner says its morbid but I think its cute. I also like Criss but for the love of god, please don't call me Crissy (or Crissie or however the hell you want to spell it) because it makes me feel like a five-year-old or a pet dog.
3. What is your zodiac sign?
Sagittarius.
4. What is your favorite book series?
A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I could name every reason why I liked it in painful detail but I’m just going to go with ‘Lemony Snicket wrote them really well’
5. Do you believe in aliens or ghosts?
I believe in aliens and I don’t NOT believe in ghosts. I’m not one of those people who think that aliens walk amongst us or even that aliens have ever visited earth but there are too many planets and possible combination of planetary environments for us to believe we are alone in the universe.
6. Who is your favorite author?
Either Tiu T or Lemony Snicket.
7. What is your favorite radio station?
Don't have one. I don’t listen to a lot of radio because it requires A) a radio or B) a car. I have neither.
8. What is your favorite flavor of anything?
Strawberry. I freakin LOVE strawberry.
9. What word would you use often to describe something great or wonderful?
Valid. Beautiful. Awe-inspiring. Pure. Rad. I have a lot of positive words.
10. What is your current favorite song?
The soundtrack to Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse. I thought I was over it by now. I was wrong.
11. What is your favorite word?
Omnipotence.
12. What was the last song you listened to?
Castle On the Hill by Ed Sheran.
13. What TV show would you recommend for everybody to watch?
Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Digestible funny humor, excellent representation of characters throughout the cast. Kickass bisexual lady is the best character, don’t @ me.
14. What is your favorite movie to watch when you’re feeling down?
The Lego Batman Movie or Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. They’re good films that never fails to make me happy.
“Don’t tell me how to parent my kid I just met!”
‘Play dumb.’ “Who’s Moralis?” ‘Not that dumb!’
15. Do you play video games?
Assassins Creed Origins. It’s beautiful, The main characters great and the story is wonderful. I always come back to it whenever I leave. I must have completed it three times over by now.
16. What is your biggest fear?
Confrontation. Deep water. Spiders. Heights. Meeting new people. Making phone calls. I have many fears.
17. What is your best quality, in your opinion?
I’m a very good listener and loyal to a fault. I’m quiet and I love doing housework (dishes and vacuuming and all that good shit) so I’m a great roommate.
18. What is your worst quality, in your opinion?
I’m terrified of conflict and never want to argue with people. I’m a chronic pushover. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve told my partner “I don’t want to be an inconvenience.”
19. Do you like cats or dogs better?
Dogs. I love both animals, but dogs like me better so I like them better.
20. What is your favorite season?
Autumn. Autumn in Australia is absolutely beautiful and the mildest of all the Australian seasons.
21. Are you in a relationship?
Yep. I gots myself a lil lady! I’m in a potentially polygamous, currently monogamous, asexual-bisexual lesbian relationship. Come June, we will have been together for three years!!! Yay us!!!
22. What is something you miss from your childhood?
Nothing. My childhood was entirely forgettable.
23. Who is your best friend?
My Partner, if that counts. She’s amazing and I love and trust her with my life.
24. What is your eye color?
Hazel, leaning on the brown side.
25. What is your hair color?
The top part is brunette, my natural hair colour, and the bottom half is a reddy-orange-almost-blond colour. I’ll probs redye it to be a better shade of red. I want a more Natasha Romanoff sort of colour.
26. Who is someone you love?
Other than my family and partner, not really anyone. Telling someone that I love them is incredibly personal for me so I don’t do it very often. @idontgiveaflyinggrayson69 comes pretty fucking close though.
27. Who is someone you trust?
Either @idontgiveaflyinggrayson69 or my one friend who reads my fanfics for me. they are both pretty cool people who I feel comfortable enough to share my writing with, which is a big deal for me.
28. Who is someone you think about often?
My glorious partner.
29. Are you currently excited about/for something?
Avengers: Endgame. I mean, I’m terrified but I’m excited.
30. What is your biggest obsession?
Marvel. Marvel comic. Marvel movies. Don’t care, just make it Marvel.
31. What was your favorite TV show as a child?
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It was good honest fun and got me into Marvel at a really young age. My favourite characters were Black Panther and vision, and to this day I’m not sure why.
32. Who of the opposite gender can you tell anything to, if anyone?
My fanfic reading friend I mentioned earlier.
33. Are you superstitious?
Yeah, kinda. I don’t go out of my way but I also don’t walk under ladders on principle.
34. Do you have any unusual phobias?
I have a lot of fears and phobias but the most unusual one is dipsophobia. I have a fear of being drunk and not in control of my own actions. I don’t really have a fear of drinking itself but the being drunk is absolutely heartstopping terrifying for me.
35. Do you prefer to be in front of the camera or behind it?
I like being behind the camera, writing the scripts for videos and movies that the media and drama students at my school make. Its fun watching your stories come to life around you.
36. What is your favorite hobby?
Writing stories.
37. What was the last book you read?
Othello but William Shakespeare. It was earlier today for school.

For my partners last birthday I wrote her a book with each page having a thing I loved about her on it. That was about a month ago.
48. Are you afraid of heights?
Yes but not of flying in planes. It’s strange!
49. What is your biggest pet peeve?
People explaining things to me like I’m an idiot or treating me like a five-year-old. This especially happens when I tell people about my cognitive issues and they start assuming I need assistance with every stupid thing. No, If I need support, I will ASK for it. Your not my knight in shining armor, you’re just an annoying prick.

106. If you found a wallet full of money on the ground, what would you do?
I’ve done that before, twice. The first time I opened it and saw that there was a student ID for a local school, so I handed it into my school (It was closer) and they called that school and returned it to the kid. The second time I opened it and saw a teacher ID for MY school and recognized the guy as my old DnT teacher, so I called the school and got him to call me. He arranged to have it picked up and I gave it back. Both times I didn’t think about taking anything from it because it just seemed wrong.
107. Do you believe that people are capable of change?
I believe people can make mistakes and change for the better, but I also think they have to prove it. Actions really do speak louder than words. I also think its reasonable that if you’ve wronged someone, they have the right to reject your company/ friendship even if you’ve changed. You broke their trust once and its reasonable for them to question whether to trust you again.
108. Are you ticklish?
Extremely.

112. Do you have any tattoos?
Nope. Always been scared that it will hurt too much. My step-sisters got a bunch and my mother’s got one and they all tell me conflicting stories about how painful it is. Plus, If I got a tattoo, I’d want it to be something memorable and special to me and as of right now I haven’t found anything that is that special for me.
113. What is the best decision that you’ve made in your life so far?
Leaving an abusive relationship.
114. Do you believe in karma?
I do but its more of a loose definition of Karma. I believe that if you do good things, good things will happen to you and vise versa. I know it’s not always true, sometimes awful things happen to good people and sometimes the worst of humanity get high honors and great experiences.
115. Do you wear glasses or contacts?
Yeah. I’m severely short-sighted so I need to wear glasses every day. I’ve thought about wearing contact lenses, but don’t like the idea of voluntarily sticking stuff in my own eyes.
116. Do you want children?
Yes and no. I’m open to the idea of having children but I don’t like the idea of actually giving birth. I’d like to adopt or foster children later in life when I settle down and have stability.
117. Who is the smartest person you know?
There’s this kid who when to high school with me who got a 98.6 ATAR, which was the highest of my grade that year. He was super smart, hacked things for fun and was the kinda kid that wrote assignments the day before and still got A’s. It was ridiculous.
118. What is your most embarrassing memory?
Nothing comes to mind presently. I’ll have to get back to you guys on that one.
119. Have you ever pulled an all-nighter?
Yes, quite a lot actually. I have two modes. Sleep is for the weak and I could sleep for a week.
120. What color are most of your clothes?
Dark blue or black with some sort of superhero logo on the front. Blue jeans.
121. Do you like adventures?
Not particularly. The comfort zone is aptly named and I see no real reason to do anything stupid or dangerous just for the sake of it. I’ll explore new places but I’m not going bungee jumping or deep-sea diving.
122. Have you ever been on TV?
Yes. I was on a news in a segment covering the steampunk festival, middle of last year. I looked like a wreck because I’d been standing in the Australian sun for hours but it was so much fun doing the interview.
123. How old are you?
18.
124. What is your favorite quote?
If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, then it’s yours. If it doesn’t, then it never was.
125. Do you prefer sweet or savory foods?
Sweet foods. Desserts and sweets are a lifeline of mine.

All of the questions form the ask except for 16 and 17 because I read the tags 😏😊
yoU FUCK--
Also I guess it’s 15 and 16 bc those are the ones that ask for pics? So ur getting everything but those two instead lmao I can’t read.
1. Song of the year?
Thunderstruck by 2CELLOS (skip ahead to 0:38 for the start of the music, 1:10 for the actual cover). It’s a great cover for a famous song and i’m a sucker for cello-only covers. Plus, it’s a great song to listen to when you want to get some of ur aggression out.
2. Album of the year?
The Persona 5 Original Soundtrack! There’s so much amazing songs from the game, all of them jazzy and catchy and oh my god I love the entire thing. The stuff featuring Lyn’s vocals is especially great!
3. Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?
Hm... there’s not a lot that come to mind, but I guess BTS? I’m not super into their music, and I don’t check out their livestreams and shit where they talk with fans, but their music is pretty sweet!
4. Movie of the year?
UUUUUUUUUUUUUGGH it has to be a tie between IT and Wonder Woman. IT was great on a sheer talent level and, after watching the 90s film, it was a massive improvement and gave the book the justice it deserved. However, Wonder Woman I appreciate because of the hopeful change it might bring to the movie industry and superhero movies, and perhaps lead to less over-sexualization of women in movies.
5. TV show of the year?
Nothing really comes to mind (especially because I don’t really watch TV a lot) but it’d have to be Brooklyn 99. Comedic gold at its finest, and the level of representation is NUTS! I love it!
6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you?
...y’all’re gonna laugh but it’s fucking Shibboleth from West Wing. We watched the episode in one of my classes and it brought up so much political topical stuff that’s happening in my country, as well as the sheer ridiculousness of what the fuck is happening in the US (as well as unintentional attachments that can form bc I made a stupid level of those with just fictional characters lmao)
7. Favorite actor of the year?
Finn Wolfhard. Not only for his level of talent in Stranger Things and IT, but also just his level of comedic genius outside of films and shows. He’s great, and I can’t wait to see where his talents will lead him next.
8. Game of the year?
WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME LIKE THIS.
I’d have to give it to Persona 5, though Breath of the Wild and Final Fantasy XV are close. The reason why P5 wins is because I’ve been waiting for this games since 2013 and it delivered on everything I wanted. Meanwhile, BOTW and FFXV were only purchased after they came out and I saw all the reviews, or (in the case of FFXV) was and impulse buy that I didn’t have much faith in. They’re both great games, don’t get me wrong, but my god, Persona 5 delivered of fucking everything I wanted and a bit more.
9. Best month for you this year?
December (and no, I’m not just saying that because that’s the month we’re in). I’ve been accepted into the colleges I really wanted to be accepted into, and Christmas wasn’t that bad. Though I am sick with something right now, it’s definitely not a bad month, and easily the best one I’ve had with all the stress/disappointments of the months prior.
10. Something that made you cry this year?
...getting a bit personal, it was seeing my cousin during Easter. She’s been struggling with drugs and she had a relapse and was completely out of it. She’s got a kid. I was mad as hell and ready to punch her, but I just kind of broke down outside the house once no one could see me.
11. Something you want to do again next year?
...uuuuuhhh I didn’t really do it this year bc of the amount of shit I had to do, but I really, really want to do NaNoWriMo again. It was fun, and I nearly succeeded last year. I was about two thousand words short because I got sick and I want to get the 50k word count for something!
12. Talk about a new friend you made this year
YES HELLO I’M ABOUT TO PRAISE THE HELL OUT OF @yoitssabrinee SO PREPARE YOURSELVES.
Honestly such a sweetheart???? She’s a-fucking-mazing and so strong despite all the bullshit she’s gone through and she’s so freaking nice and caring! Like, I’ve been complaining to her about how I’ve been sick and she’s always like “did you take your meds? Did you drink water? Did you eat?” And it’s so nice and even if our convos are mostly screaming at each other about FFXV fanfics we’re writing it’s SUCH A JOY to see her messages whenever I wake up/am about to go to sleep.
13. How was your birthday this year?
Good! The only negative part was that it was during a school day (typically it falls on Thanksgiving break, but not this year) and I got a lotta good gifts! I certainly can’t complain about it, that’s for sure.
14. Favorite book you read this year?
Catcher in the Rye. It’s very rare that I find a school book that I enjoy, and this hits all my favorite things. It’s a super introspective look on Holden’s life (which is pretty messed up tbh) and his struggles to reconcile with his flaws and the need to be somewhat ‘normal’.
15. What’s a bad habit you picked up this year?
Sort of a bad habit that I’ve continued and haven’t stopped--picking at my skin. Especially scabs and any chapped skin on my lips. I have so many cuts and scars from doing this, and I really need to stop...
18. A memorable meal this year?
I went with my family to some fancy-ass Japanese restaurant with my friend irl before we went to see Hamilton. The food there was tasty as hell, and the experience itself made it incredibly memorable.
19. What’re you excited about for next year?
There’s a couple! Getting my driving license, graduating high school, and going to college would definitely be at the top of that list! For more material things, I’m looking forward to Hacker’s Memory, the new Persona rhythm games (I’m being very hopeful that they’ll be released in English around the same time of their Japanese versions) and Final Fantasy Dissidia!
20. What’s something you learned this year?
How to drive!
21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?
My old swingset broke. I still use it as a way to destress (the repetitive motion of swinging, combined with listening to music really clams me down) and there’s no way we can really repair it until it gets warmer... which could be as early as February, or as late as April, considering the weather patterns. Basically, it has to be above freezing to do anything.
22. Favorite place you visited this year?
Boston for college tours! It was a great city, though I could’ve dealt with less stress from trying to figure out where the fuck to go...
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
It’s hard right now. God do I know how hard it is right now. It’s gonna get harder. You’re going to hate everyone for a while, because no one really helped you the way you needed help, but you’ll make it. I promise you’ll make it.
24. Did you keep any New Year’s Resolutions?
Technically yes, because I didn’t make any. Can’t break any resolutions if you never make ‘em.
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one
Uuuuugh I have a lot that I just make in my head, but because I have the artistic skills of a drunk goldfish I can’t typically draw them, and I’m too nervous to write about them (^^;). Other people can keep asking this one, and I’ll describe a different OC that I have, but only in my head, y’know?
I DID get FFXV Comrades and made an OC! His name is Tonitus, Tony for short. He’s 5′3″ and hails from... Altissia, if I remember correctly. He has about mid-length black hair and bright, that almost Mako-colored blue eyes.
In my weird-ass lore about the guy, he’s a messenger who got amnesia from falling to the surface. He’s loyal to Ramuh and can harness lightning magic easily, and struggles with fire and ice magic. He got the Kingsglaive uniform from Ramuh himself, who sent him down to Eos to assist the humans with the encroaching darkness and rampant daemons and infected wildlife. As he regains his memory, he’s torn with assisting them like a human would or like a pseudo-god, and his own mortality and how he’ll deal with everyone passing long before him, long before the light can be restored, long before the King can ascend.

Thoughts on Oh! Suketora!!! Yuri!!! on ICE / Original Skate Song Collection (Part 1)
I've been looping this soundtrack for weeks now in my car, which leaves me able to focus entirely on the songs, without the distraction of the characters' monologues or visuals. It's truly an amazing soundtrack and I'm in awe at the amount of love and effort poured into it.
The music producer is Tominaga Keisuke, who is also the founder of PIANO INC. Umebayashi Tarou (梅林 太郎) and Matsushiba Taku (松司馬 拓) are also part of PIANO (which also lists Yoko Kanno on their website!). They're really young, aged 36 and 25 respectively. Umebayashi Tarou did more of the contemporary songs; he's so versatile! From "Yuri on Ice", to "Welcome to the Madness" - holy shit! Matsushiba Taku composed the more classical pieces and also conducted the orchestra Ensemble FOVE. He's really amazing, and it's hard to believe he's only 25.
So! My thoughts on the songs in the soundtrack:
1. ARIA - STAMMI VICINO. NON TE NE ANDARE - Matsushiba Taku / ENSEMBLE FOVE / Tenor: 工藤和真
This is Victor's beautiful Free Skate song. Much had been said about the significance of this song and programme, so I won't repeat that. I'm really impressed that Kubo-sensei wrote the lyrics and got them translated into Italian and it all just worked. My fangirl buddies Q and S kept telling me that it was an existing opera, not one made for the anime, but they were totally fooled.
2. 愛について~Eros~ IN REGARDS TO LOVE-EROS- by Mastsushiba Taku, featuring OKI JIN
I didn't really fall in love with this song until I was looping it in the car. It's such an exciting song, with the flamenco beat and layers of intertwined melodies. I can't believe it's only around two minutes, when there are so many sections and variations in this piece, rising to a breathtaking climax.
3. YURI ON ICE / UMEBAYASHI TAROU
Beautiful. Just absolutely beautiful. I love the piano arrangement here; and I love it when the strings kick in for the chorus. It's such an emotional song that truly encompasses Yuuri's journey; without it, I doubt I would have been moved to tears like I was every single time Yuuri skated it in competition. I bought the score, but it's really darned hard and I think I'll be able to play it in...perhaps 6 months? *trying hard to reactivate synapses that went dormant 20 years ago...* Right. Not that I don't love them, but I don't really have much to say for the first three songs as they have been META-ed to death on tumblr already :) But I find myself going back to track 1 every time track 3 ends!
4. 愛について~Agape~ / UMEBAYASHI TAROU
It only hit me after the anime ended that it was actually a young choirboy singing this, and not a girl as I'd previously thought. It's very fitting, giving that it's Yuri's short programme for what's likely his last season before he gets that final growth spurt. Again, the lyrics were written in Japanese and translated into Latin by a university professor (found the English translation by a fan here!) Looking at the lyrics, I'm not sure how it embodies the theme of unconditional love...well the persona seems to be spending his entire life diligently working to prove himself deserving of love and mercy...and does it seem to end with the persona's death and finding the ultimate happiness love/happiness? While this is a programme that Yuri Plisetsky eventually skated and it represents him finding love in the people around him (granddad, coaches, new friends etc), this was originally supposed to be a programme that Victor was doing for himself. It's worthwhile thinking about how this applies to Victor; perhaps he does harbour a yearning that all his hard work on the ice will pay off and that he will find his own happiness at the end, even if it may mean ending his skating career...I really don't know. On a nother note, I just noticed this while I was taking the screencap: in episode 11 when Yuri skates this, Coach Yakov gets a momentary flashback of long-haired teenage Victor skating while looking at him. Perhaps Victor does love Coach Yakov so much as a parental figure that it comes through in his choreography.
5. PIANO CONCERTO IN B-MINOR:ALLEGRO APPASIONATO / Ensemble FOVE / conducted by Matsushiba Taku
This is Yurio's free programme piece. It's another wonder! It starts with a furious, impatient piano section - so very like Yurio himself. In the middle, the song transitions to a calmer, warmer strings section - very representative of his personal growth. In the anime, both times Yurio skates the free programme he's having his angry internal monologue here so I've never really listened to it before playing the CD. In episode 9, this section is even cut short as we don't get to see Yuri's full skate. Finally, the song wraps up with a culmination of both the prior themes and ends on a very triumphant note. Again, given the story that it tells, I'm really surprised that this piece is just over three minutes in duration.
6. MINAMI'S BOOGIE / UMEBAYASHI TAROU
This is a fun song. I've no real attachment to it, though, because I've no real attachment to Minami's story, adorable though he may be!
7. SHALL WE SKATE? / MATSUSHIBA TAKU feat. The Soulmatics
Phichit's Short Programme song! This is sheer exuberance. It's from the fictional "Shall We Skate" movie, that probably references "The King and I". The synopsis is here. Anyway, I love how this is like a lush Disney musical number. Phichit is such a Disney prince!
8. TERRA INCOGNITA / MATSUSHIBA TAKU feat.U-zhaan
I really love this song which was used in Phichit's Free Skate. Somehow the word that best comes to mind when describing Phichit and his programmes is "exuberant". This song is a delicious, addictive mix of Indian influences, a cacophony of instruments (flute, sitar, bagpipes and more!), lovely melodies and counter melodies, and exuberant vocals. It strikes me as a song of celebration, to be performed at a grand royal event. I couldn't quite figure out what language was used, but someone blogged that it was just made-up words according to this interview. It's pretty long, and I only understand around 50% of it...but the song is meant to be sung in an ancient language, and the vocalist herself participated in coming up with the words. Also, this song is meant to embody hybrid world music; they wanted to convey a sense of chaos, but with balance within the chaos. When I have the time I'll sit down and properly translate it and edit this post if needed...
More later! I've at least gotten through the songs of my favourite characters.

REVIEW: Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Has Some Problems In Its Theaters
If there’s one general feeling that came out of the over forty hours I spent with Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, it’s confliction. Not only does the story involve internal conflicts about finding your true self, but also the conflict of finding what’s good in this game versus the parts that are disappointing. There’s conflict with the idea of whether or not the Persona spin offs could be wearing out their welcome at this point. Perhaps it’s even a conflict with my personal feelings with regards to this series as a whole. With twenty-five characters intermingling from across Persona 3, 4, and 5, what exactly made this game divisive in my eyes? Is there enough of an improvement over its predecessor Persona Q? Are all of the characters able to mesh well together or do they have a problem intermingling with one another? Let’s jump into the closest movie theater screen and fight through the labyrinth to see what’s going on with Persona Q2.
Persona Q2 shares a similar premise to its predecessor: a strange event brings the casts of various Persona games together, and they’re forced to figure out why they’ve been brought there and how to fix it. In this case, they are introduced to three new characters:
1) Hikari, a girl who can't remember why she’s been trapped in a theater
2) Nagi, the theater’s curator who is taking care of Hikari
3) Doe, the strange projectionist that looks like a shadow.
With the game taking place in a movie theater, that allows for all of the dungeons to be a different take on movies and movie genres.
And here lies one of the problems with the game and its dungeon design - they feel like elaborate set pieces rather than labyrinths. At first, each new dungeon you enter is fun to look at, especially when you see how they take a specific idea or genre in film and put the Persona twist on it. However, once you make your way through the dungeon, they start to feel too open, unlike the previous game’s dungeons, and become tedious by the end. Surprisingly, the only dungeon that captures the labyrinth feel is the final one where everything is cramped and claustrophobic, which is how the dungeons should make you and the rest of the characters feel. It would’ve been entirely possible to combine both the crampedness of a labyrinth with their take on movie genres, but by prioritizing one over the other for 80% of the game, it turns the dungeons "Oh, that's neat" areas rather than elaborate and fun mazes to maneuver through.
The less than stellar dungeon design becomes especially egregious when the fourth dungeon is long for the sake of being long. Persona Q2 does this a lot, both with this dungeon and the boss fights in general where each one usually has some sort of gimmick to extend the fight. Whether it’s by constantly healing excessive amounts of health or binding your characters because of story reasons, each boss fight is drawn out. That shouldn’t be a complaint for a series that is known for having fantastic combat, but when you become trapped with just redoing the amount of damage you’ve already done because a boss full healed itself, it takes the fun out of the otherwise good combat. There’s no real use of strategy when boss fights are turned into these kinds of cycles.
These issues might be the worst parts of this game, but that’s not to say there aren’t good parts to it. Combining all of these casts together leads to some really fun interactions with everyone. When Persona 5, Persona 4, and Persona 3 Portable’s protagonists meet for the first time, there’s an option to have them just introduce themselves by saying weird lines they’ve heard from the various Personas they’ve summoned. It’s incredibly weird, but fits these characters because Persona protagonists are, well, weird. Heck, bringing back the female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable is fantastic given that she’s been largely ignored in all of these spinoff games and is the better protagonist from Persona 3. They capture her more upbeat personality extremely well and her story throughout Persona Q2 was one of my favorite parts.
Yet, it’s not the protagonists who have the most fun when it comes to interactions. Yukiko and Yusuke have a really fun set of moments where they learn the true passion of art, Goro and Ken come together for a very interesting heart-to-heart with regards to where their characters would be in their respective stories, and Futaba and Naoto are excited to meet Aigis. These usually lead to the characters getting a unison attack that helps in battles which are all incredibly well done and fit how they have come together over common interests or by just wanting to work together.
Despite these fun moments, one of the problems from the first game and other spinoff games is that characters can become caricatures of themselves. This was an issue especially with Chie and Akihiko, where they were reduced to only liking meat and protein, and this continues again in Persona Q2. These two characters (and others) have extensive character arcs, but they’re boiled down to their stereotypes. Even worse is the fact that a certain person on the Persona 5 side is written better than he was in the original game which shows that they CAN create amazing characters, but seem to pick and choose who gets that treatment.
Perhaps this is because while the idea of combining all of these games’ casts together seems like a fun idea, it’s too much. When Persona 2: Eternal Punishment did it first nearly twenty years ago, it didn’t bring over everyone from Revelations Persona and didn’t bring them together while their characterizations were only 2/3rds complete like what happens in Persona Q2. There’s also the fact that this is non-canon like the first game so there’s no ramifications for what happens and anything that is learned within the confines of the game just gets wiped. It’s entirely possible to do a big crossover game like this within the canon of the series and make it work. The franchise has precedent for it with P2 and the fighting games. So maybe it’s time to rein in the spinoff games in this series. This is the seventh one in seven years. That’s a lot and eventually the quality is going to drop off, no matter how many characters you put in.
Despite my problems with various parts of the game, I do think that it all wraps up really well. Hikari shines as the game’s actual protagonist and even gets her own moment that the mainline protagonists have all had in their respective games. Her story is a treat to see through to the end and how they briefly tie her story back to the other games works as a brief little respite. That made bumping heads with parts of the game that I wasn’t a fan of worth it in the end.
One final bummer: There is no English dub for Persona Q2. While I understand why there's a lack of one, this is the first Persona game to not have dual audio, outside of the PSP port of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment which never got a release outside of Japan. Gathering all of the casts together for this game would have been a scheduling (and perhaps a technical) nightmare. But it's still kind of a bummer, especially when this game is one of the swan songs for the Nintendo 3DS system.
As someone who’s played every single game in the Persona series, I think the biggest issue that Persona Q2 has is that the series can do better. Outside of character interactions, the final dungeon and the ending, the great soundtrack, and P3P’s main character returning, I was left somewhat disappointed. Of course, my experience with this series will differ from yours, so if you read this and think I’m being too harsh or don’t agree, this may still be a game for you. There’s certainly some good to be found within the parts I didn’t like, but at the same time, I don’t want that to become the norm for this franchise as a whole. Persona Q2 truly takes you through a labyrinth that’s filled with both light and dark.
REVIEW ROUNDUP

Sometimes Dumb is Alright (a Tag movie review)
Usually I try to not give spoilers when I give a movie review. Every once in a while one comes along that’s impossible to spoil. This is one of those movies. If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know the basic plot. A group of five lifelong friends continue to play a game of tag that they began when they were nine into their forties. The game has expanded to the point where as adult who have grown up and moved away from their home town, they now engage in ridiculous acts of subterfuge as they traverse the country attempting to tag each other and they go to all lengths to avoid being tagged and becoming “It”. Because what could be worse than being it? Thus, the characters run around tagging each and all manner of slapstick comedy ensues. That’s it.
That’s the entire film! There’s really nothing more to it than that. It’s pretty dumb.
I loved it.
I can’t tell you that there’s a lot of deep meaning in this. On the surface it looks like a silly middle-aged men being stupid comedy. It’ appears to be a film in the vein of the The Hangover or Game Night. But on a deeper level… well, there is no deeper level. There’s no secret mission that’s going on during the game. There’s no international crime ring that the heroes get mixed up in. There’s nothing but the concept. This is a movie about grown men playing tag. In fact, the places where it tries to fall apart are the places where the movie tries to do too much. There’s a sort of half hearted attempt at a love story going on during the game. There’s a minor subplot of one of the characters having a secret that all but comes out of nowhere in the last 10 minutes or so (not completely out of nowhere. There is a hint to it. You might pick up on it if you’re a big geek for dissecting film narratives like I am… but you probably won’t and seriously… you don’t fucking care. It doesn’t matter). These are the most boring parts of the movie. They slow the film down and they just don’t really matter other than the fact that at some point, someone in a writing room probably said something like “hey, maybe there should be a point to this movie…” That person was wrong. There didn’t need to be a point. There certainly didn’t need to be two points. They seem very out of place.
And there’s a reason for that. The movie is “based on true story” about a group of ten real life friends who actually have been doing this very thing in real life for three decades. And there’s no secret story there. It’s just a bunch of friends basing their continued friendship around something that is fundamentally ridiculous. That was the story when the Wall Street Journal first reported on them five years ago, and that should have been the story today. It’s just a fundamentally interesting thing. It didn’t need any more than that.
In a lot of ways this movie has some of the flaws that I talked about in my review of Office Christmas Party. Namely that there are no real characters in it. In fact, it doesn’t even try to pretend it has characters. All of the protagonists just rely on you knowing their personas from other movies. Ed Helms, arguably the lead of the film, is essentially just play Ed Helms… he’s the same quirky middle aged nerd he is in Hangover or any number of other roles. Similarly, Isla Fisher plays his wife, essentially rehashing her character from Wedding Crashers. John Hamm is playing “generic rich business man,” basically a slightly nicer and cleaned up version fo Don Draper. Jake Johnson basically walked off the set of The New Girl and into this movie and just stayed in character, but took advantage of the R rating to make a bunch of weed jokes. Hannibal Burress is playing Hannibal Burress… or really a toned down version fo Hannibal Burress that represents how white people probably see him. And finally Jeremy Renner is playing Hawkeye or the version of Jason Bourne that wasn’t Matt Damon. Yes… I realize that Hawkeye Bourne (yes, I know the character’s actual name was Aaron Cross. But I don’t care and neither do you) is sort of out of place in a movie like this as he is more of a superhero than a slapstick comedy character. Yes, the movie realizes this too. No one fucking cares. He’s just Hawkeye Bourne inserted into a slapstick comedy… fucking deal with it. (Seriously… someone else go watch this movie just so we can talk about this).
It’s dumb. I loved it.
It works. It shouldn’t work. But it just does. There’s no deeper message. There’s not really any character development. And the places that it tries to do these things are… really dumb. But this is a perfectly fun way to spend an evening turning off your brain and watching something dumb but fun. Also, it has an amazing soundtrack, mostly full of a lot of late 80s, early 90s hip-hop. There’s no obvious reason for this. I’m pretty sure the film was scored by someone who just said “you know what, i’m in the mood for some Tribe Called Quest, Ahmad and Ice T. I’m just gonna toss this track right here. That’s right, I am a nightmare walkin’, psychopath talkin’!” Sometimes that’s just what you need.

“Patti Cake$” (2017)
Drama
Running Time: 108 minutes
Written & Directed by: Geremy Jasper
Featuring: Danielle Macdonald, Cathy Moriarty, Siddharth Dhananjay, McCaul Lombardi, Patrick Brana, Bridget Everett, Mamoudou Athie
Patti: [to Barb] “Act your age.”
Barb: [to Patti] “Act your race.”
Firstly, it has to be said upfront that this debut film by music video director Geremy Jasper is not original, that is to say the plot is not, however the success as well as enjoyment of this movie is not to be found there, look closer and you are witness to a movie that is about the truth of the characters that have been created they are original as well as heart felt with plenty of emotion to push through the plot. This is a film where the plot exists to solely illustrate some fine acting, original musical performances as well as the strong relationships that exist between family as well as friends. These relationships occur when people are not only color blind but love each other for reasons that only they can explain, where looks, economics and politics are able to transcend location in the world we all live in, acceptance is central to “Patti Cake$” (2017).
Of course a movie about a budding white MC in a run down part of the US might sound familiar to many, in fact the fingerprints of the Curtis Hanson directed “8 Mile” (2002) is all over “Patti Cake$” (2017) on a superficial level. The bigotry that exists within “Patti Cake$” goes so deep that at times you wonder if there will be any redemption for the main character at all – but what kind of movie would this be if if ended on hopelessness, but in fact the ending is low key much like the entire low budget movie itself, there lies its originality as well as the emotion that is underpinned by the main character herself.
The movie concerns Patricia “Dumbo” Dombrowski is an overweight white girl from Bergen County, New Jersey, who seeks fame and fortune as a rapper. She faces several obstacles including discouragement from some people close to her as well as encouragement from others. This of course is just an outline as anything other than this may spoil the surprises that are on offer in this movie so do yourself a favor and watch this now.
This is definitely a movie about journeys; the main journey is of course Patti herself who moves through the story like a force, with the inherent ability to push her way through the prejudices of others as well as the innumerable obstacles that come up. But there are major secondary characters that evolve throughout the movie such as Barb, Patti’s long suffering mother who battles her own self worth, the rising star of her daughter, an alcohol problem as well as many other issues; Nana, Barb’s mother who has health issues but is right by Patti’s side even in the closing moments, finally there are Patti’s closest allies, Basterd and Jheri, two of the brightest lights in this movie, who do what you expect but like Patti have unfulfilled dreams that at least start to happen, in an original way.
Of course this movie could not be the success it is without the incredible actors, which for the most part are all budding talents. The cast led by Danielle Macdonald who is a relative newcomer leads in a way that shows she has made choices for her character that are inherent to “Patti Cake$” success. There are a range of emotions that Macdonald not only has to go through, but bring to life believably onscreen so that we are on board with her on the journey. It would have been easy for the actor to fall back on her physicality alone, but she does not take the easy way out, this shows as she develops a fully realized three dimensional persona. The other actor that brings her A game is the similarly talented Bridget Everett who shows the ferocious actress she is capable of being, but it is her voice that brings the spark of hope, particularly in the musical ending that was touching in a non manipulative way. The cast is rounded out with Siddharth Dhananjay and Mamoudou Athie, newcomers who aid Macdonald without overpowering her performance at all, which means they know how to support her in all the right ways. Lastly of note is the great Cathy Moriarty who while not appearing for the entire film lends her star power and talent to hook the audience in the first act, reminding me of the fantastic Anne Ramsey (“Throw Momma from the Train”(1987)) in her limited time onscreen.
As with many first time writer/directors Geremy Jasper has mined a story that he knows extremely well, as a prolific director of music videos he has been able to channel this knowledge into a movie that, while it sticks to some well worn tropes, is able to shine with its deviation into originality using original characters to make some subtle points about not only the music business but society in general. The fact that the protagonist is a young white girl who is overweight is so refreshing that it really does illustrate the shortcomings of not only men but the larger society in general. When people view Patti (those that do not know her) all they see is a fat white girl with no talent, but of course everyone in this movie is proved wrong in all of their short sightedness, most of all her Mother who is seemingly blind to Patti’s talents – this is because of age as well as her own societal prejudices. One of the strongest messages of “Patti Cake$” is that you should never judge a book by its cover, which is true of almost every single character in this movie – they all bely there looks with talents that surpass almost everyone else they come across. “Patti Cake$” is also a reflection of what society wants you to think, that is people who do not fit into boxes either do not matter or are not worth worrying about. This of course is a sentiment that exists in US politics at the moment, showing no signs of improving. What “Patti Cake$” does is to shine a light as well as physically show that we all matter, that what we do is to fight everyday for a reason to live – Patti is someone who never quits, no matter what happens – she is her own person no matter what pain she must go through to prove that – something we could all learn to do at least once in our lives.
One of the major aspects of the movie is of course the music, which was written by writer/director Geremy Jasper and is as vital as anything else that appears within the movie. Not only does the music fit in with the characters that have been created but you can easily imagine them creating these songs, ‘Pbnj’ has to the crowning glory of the soundtrack with an appearance by Nana, just fantastic as well as being completely in tune with the movie. You just need to look at the song titles to see that Jasper has a sense of humor that actually goes along with hip-hop in a big way as well as suiting each scene that music appears in.
This is a great movie to watch as an antidote to the usual big screen fare that graces the screens of multi screen cinemas, as well as being a very good debut from the writer/director/composer that is as entertaining as it is a commentary on being unique in a society that asks for homogeneity – it is also a watch for the family especially for those that feel out of step – it says it is ok to be unique as well as accepting of others.

Analysis of Film openings by Charlie Stopler
The Watchmen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVUDdQS2UxA
Straight away, it is a clearly a superhero film. The opening credits montage set to Bob Dylan’s timeless “The times they are a-changin” is well constructed and sets the nature and tone of the twisted world of Watchmen to great effect. The montage opens by introducing the reality of real-world superheroes in the 1940s with Hollis Mason, dressed as Nite Owl, punching out a criminal as cameras flash around him. Instantly noticeable is the decision to present the entire scene in slow motion, a brilliant inclusion that, when combined with Dylan’s tune, creates a hypnotic, nostalgic effect perfect for the arrangement, while “warner bros. pictures and paramount present” is above his head in large text. A few shots later, Snyder captures an image of the minutemen posing for a picture in 1940. The costumes and general aesthetic work in these early depictions are authentic and stunning.
Most notably, the montage works to detail the turbulent nature of superhero popularity as depicted in the media leading up to the present-day of the novel. After initial successes and stardom, heroes are shown to be murdered, retire, go mad, and fall out of favour with the public. In sequence, Dollar Bill is shown dead at a crime scene with cameras flashing about, Sally Jupiter is shown pregnant at a party with the rest of the minutemen under the banner “Happy retirement Sally”, and Mothman is shown attempting to flail and fight his way out of the arms of men in white coats taking him into an ambulance. Snyder depicts the rise and fall of the original Watchmen superhero.
Some of the most fun moments of the montage come from depicting bits and pieces of Watchmen’s alternate version of history. The heroes of Watchmen are shown to have had a direct impact on many major historical moments of the 60s. One shot faithfully recreates the Zapruder tape assassination of JFK only to pan away to a hill, revealing the Comedian incriminatingly holding a rifle, while another twists the moon landing by showing Dr. Manhattan’s face in the reflection of a space helmet, while yet another depicts Richard Nixon being elected for a third term. All these things help to add to the idea that in this film, these superheros have had a direct impact on our past.
Mission impossible: Ghost Protocol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJCvU-91eAo
The great thing about the sequence is the explosive start when a fuse is lit as the music begins. As its lit “Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions present” is shown in large text, establishing the main distributors and producers. This is followed by “A Tom cruise Production”, showing that he is a huge part of the films success. This fuse is subsequently featured throughout the entire sequence and ties the whole thing together, with the camera following it wherever it goes. With burning circuit boards, skyscrapers with graphically-overlaid blueprints, an underwater shot, bullets, missiles and fast cars, the viewer tends to miss the fact that some of the movie ending (such as the circular car park) is featured in these opening credits. The audience also sees this with the props used in the title sequence such as the fuse which is lit (symbolising an explosion), Missiles, Guns/Bullets and even fast sports cars. There are various camera scenes and angles such as close ups, long shots and cinematic/establishing shots.
Overall, a captivating and thrilling sequence. It gives hints as to what the film is going to be about and includes objects and scenes from the film without revealing the story line. Rewatching it after having seen the film creates a whole new experience watching the title sequence as you recognise everything shown. The classic mission impossible theme tune that everyone knows and loves is used, creating nostalgia and excitement from the start. Following the fuse is a clever and innovative idea which keeps us engaged in the action. The "Ghost Protocol" font is very misty and a faded grey giving the audience the feel of a ghost or something quite mysterious. The title sequence shows the Production Company and Producers first, then it goes into the title of the film and the rest of the casts. The font for the title of the film is different to the others, it is much bolder and more attractive to the audience to make sure that they read the name of the film.
Fight Club https://vimeo.com/90519890
The opening starts with a quick sound of an old classical music and after about 2 seconds the soundtrack changes into a loud, full of beat tune and it being low key creates a creepy atmosphere. The movement on the screen is fast paced in dark colours and it is supposed to reflect the inside of someone's brain. The camerawork shows very precise details and there are sort of electrical impulses running through the brain that can represent different feelings, in case of this atmosphere it is more likely to be fear and confusion. The scale is changed the whole time, so the audience are able to see close ups of different lobes and also medium shots of other brain chords, nerve connections and particles. What is also interesting to notice that as the sequnce goes on the pores seem to be more and more clogged. Overall this represents and shows that the film will have a lot to do with someone's thinking, mental stability and there is going to be a lot to think about for the audience as well.
The credits are going on at the same time and Brad Pitt has one of the main roles, which will attract more audience. As the credits finish the pulling out of the brain fades into an extreme close up of what we discover to be a gun inside someone's mouth. At the same time there is diegetic narration that mentions the name "Tyler Durdan." This establishes two characters for the audience and creates an enigma, as we are wondering what is the link between them. At the same time another enigma is created as the person who holds the gun speaks, but we can only see a close up of his arm and later backside, which creates a mystery of who he is. He mentions the time of "3 minutes" and asks if the other person has any "last words to mark the occasion." This is another confusion for the audience, as we are wondering why he is so specific with time and if the occasion is killing the man or something else.
There is a slight humour to break the tension as the man attempts to talk with the gun in his mouth and when his mouth is free he says "I can't think of anything." This little moment in the opening is a huge enigma, as the film has a non-linear narrative and as it starts at the end, we have no idea what is the story behind what is going on. The antagonist-potential killer and the protagonist-victim are established, as well as the mysterious persona Tyler Durdan. The setting is in the dark and the atmosphere with gun is very tense and nerving, which creates a worrying mood. Just from this little clip the genre of the film can be established as a thriller and there are a lot of enigmas and puzzles created for the audience right from the start.
Shaun of the Dead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCso753oVfw
This film follows the experience of midde-class English 20 year olds survival of the zombie apocalypse by hiding in a pub. It is a clever parody of the zombie genre. It can be seen as a zombie-romantic-comedy as the main character Sean (played by Simon Pegg) attempts to win his girlfriend back while trying to survive. The opening sequence shows many people doing their boring, mundane deadend jobs as if they were on autopilot. It gives the audience the impression that they are not yet zombies, but are basically zombified by doing their routine jobs every day with little thought or regard. It questions social norms. Cleverly, at the end of the film the same people are shown doing the same jobs expect this time they are zombies. This is a clever method to show how mundane working life can be.
The first shot is of someone pushing trolleys slowly while “Universal pictures Studiocanal and Working title films” is shown, confirming the producer and distributor. The lighting is bright throughout, unlike most zombie films that use darkness to create suspense and fear. For example, the supermarket during the day shown is an unconventional place for a horror to be filmed. The camera then cuts to people waiting at a bus stop who check their clocks in sync, reinforcing the idea of people turning into zombies by doing the same thing every day. The whole opening sequence is a mid-shot with a slow pan that cuts to the next shot. This shot is repeated which again adds to the idea of mundane conformity zombifying people. It makes the audience feel less involved, like an onlooker.
The next shot is different to the rest, indicating change of pace and story. It starts with a low angle shot of some feet stumbling with a large shadow, accompanied by zombie like groaning. This is typical in horror and zombie films to make someone seem more frightening. The camera then pans up to reveal that it is not a zombie, it is Shaun the main character yawning, stumbling as he has just woken up. This perhaps is a mockery of the usual horror genre.
The next shot is of Shaun and Ed. Their close relationship is shown when they sit next to each other both with their feet on the table. We hear “player 2 has entered the game” as shaun pick up the controller. His instant joining into the game signifies the close bond they share. Ed then says “haven’t you got work?” followed by a voice saying “player two has left the game”. Shaun gets up as quickly as he sat down, reinstating the idea that having to do the same tasks everyday is like already being a zombie.
