Now curriculum may vary and there was a reform of education since I left high school so it might have changed but what any french graduate should have read: (authors in bold, titles in italics)

Poetry (middle ages and early Renaissance):

Any three poems from Joachim du Bellay or other poets from the Pleiade. Most important is Heureux qui comme Ulysse.

Also look up who the Pleiade were.

16th and 17th centuries novels:

La Princesse de Montpensier, by Madame de Lafayette. 90 pages but very, very antiquated language.

Gargantua, by Rabelais. It's NOT cheating to take the modern-french translation. Native speakers do it. It's not cheating either to just dump it half-way through because you don't understand half of it. Native speakers do it too.

La Belle et la Bête, by Madame Leprince de Beaumont.

Any fairy tale by Perrault.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Choderlos de Laclos. Please. Do. Not. Read. It. It's awful, the protagonist rapes a 15yo girl but it's ok because him loving her is making him into a better person (Yikes), the whole thing is about the protagonist and his long-time on-and-off girlfriend (who's married to someone else) teaming up to dirty/perverse two (maybe three?) innocent young ladies. It's studied because it's a classics, not because it's good. Please. Don't subject yourself to it.

Les Lettres Persannes, by Montesquieu. letters from a bunch of fictional characters to the others, two iranians (but at the time Iran was called Perse) visit France and criticize everything (way for Montesquieu to criticize but be able to say "nah it's my characters saying that not me"). TW of suicide and incest iirc. Not something too graphic either, since it's always second-hand testimonies or third-hand.

Theatre of the 17th and 18th centuries:

Le Cid, by Pierre Corneille.

At least one play by Molière. Can't recommand because I don't remember much of it. Do read summaries for a few of his plays though because some characters names have passed into common language to mean the type of characters they were (a Harpagon is going to be a greedy man, a Tartuffe a guy pretending to be devoted but being a hypocrite...)

Le Mariage de Figaro, by Beaumarchais. It's a political satire but also people are jumping from the window so that the husband doesn't find them in the lady's room. Basically.

If you fell in love with theatre at that point, you can look up Racine but fair warning, all of those have old language but Racine (along with Corneille) have very old language.

19th century novel:

Short version of Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo. I'd recommand the long one but only the short one is required and also the long one has 40 pages of description of the parisian sewers system with no relevance at all to the story and that's not the only long digression so... Do what you want.

A book by Honoré de Balzac, whichever you'd want. If you want to read the whole series, it might be best to look up the order on wikipedia, they'll know better than me. Basically him and the next author on the list had a bibliographic universe before Marvel made it cool. 60-or-so books with common characters but not the same protagonists. I'd recommand you simply go with Le Lys de la Vallée, slightly royalist and apparently the easiest to read? (so i've been told but i didn't read it myself so...)

Any book by Emile Zola. I'd recommand Au bonheur des dames because it has to be the only one with a happy ending and a cute romance out of the 40-and-more books by Zola.

Bel-Ami, by Guy de Maupassant. The protagonist has no morals but it's funny. Kinda.

Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert. A tad bit depressing. Not the most interesting either. But it's one of the few that have been studied more than once in my schooling so I know it's an important one.

19th century theatre:

Hernani, a play by Victor Hugo. Tragedy, so a bit sad. But do look up the Battle of Hernani (sorry there's not a big choice of languages for this one on wikipedia). Basically founded the french romantic genre. Quite a scandal.

If per chance Hernani was love at first reading for you, you might also like Ruy Blas, still Hugo, although i found it a bit less good. If you want a ridiculously overdramatic, over-the-top movie freely inspired by Ruy Blas but in which no one dies, you've got La Folie des Grandeurs, a comedy with Louis de Funès.

Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand, and if the style of the author makes you want to read more, go for l'Aiglon, which is about Napoleon's son but is a bit sadder.

19th century poetry:

Les fleurs du mal by Baudelaire. Awful. Simply awful. I mean you can try a few. I hated them all. Not necessary to have read all of them by any mean.

20th century:

A Ionesco play, either La Cantatrice Chauve or Rhinoceros, for the Theatre de l'Absurde. La Cantatrice Chauve is funnier I think.

Actually I won't give you any novels from that century because most of the ones studied suck and also it's for post-bac (after graduation) studies so it doesn't fall under the ask.

Now if I had to give you a few classics to read, what I'd recommand:

Les Trois Mousquetaires, by Alexandre Dumas.

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, (ibidem). Luckily this one is on substack format at the cristo account.

Notre-Dame de Paris, by Victor Hugo.

R17 ½° and F71° in the shade at 6 ¾ a.m. out (A- and I) at 7 – sent George to our friend the officer to say we were walking up the hill – message back the poor man had been up all night at his papers, and was not dressed – walked thro’ the commandants’ court to the front of his house – situated on walled basement part of the ruined emplacement of ancient palace? surrounded with old ruined buildings –mosque – fort-palace – what – fine view over the whole of the present town – now stretching down into the valley but, formerly all on the height, here, and at the back – on the plateau of the mountain behind the commandants’ house – a heap of little rubbish-mounds, covered with thistles and tall rank herbage – impossible said our friend afterwards to walk over because one can take step but at the risk of breaking ones’ legs – hares there – and he had hunted them with his dogs – but impossible to do much good – serpents there certainly – but it was the terrible little breakly holes one fell into that prevented ones’ going there – sauntered afterwards to the handsome building (3 ranges of gallery)  in progress for a military store – a blacksmiths’ shop near opening into cabinet makers shop – the whole formerly mosque or something appertaining to the old palace – never was between blacksmiths’ shop – 3 men were at work hammering red hot iron, yet the place was cool and fresh  - a large dome standing on 4 arcades of 5 yards or thereabouts of opening and the square pillars about 4ft. square – the side-aisles or side-arcades each in its day with separate dome? formed excellent places for fire and bellows etc. – we walked forwards meaning to go to the old fortress on the hill just before us – at 2v. distance said one of the soldier blacksmiths – had walked onwards towards the fort and village not far from the foot of its hill perhaps 1/2v. when our officer (about 7 ½ a.m.) came up – apologies etc. etc. said he would be with us with horses at 3 or 3 ½ p.m. and was now at liberty to walk about a little in the town – returned – examined the old inscriptions – Arabic – but tombs of only about a century old – the original arms of Persia a star – then a star with the sun in the middle – the star on the tombs here shewed the persons to be of the Sheah sect (sect of Ali) and the tall head-stone were placed to prevent the [?] the Western setting sun from falling on the grave stone and were a proof that the persons were rich being able to afford this superstitious luxury the head always turned to the East and the stone at the head sheltered it from the west – the Lesghiens of the Sheah sect – he calls all the natives not Armenians of hereabouts, Tartars – said George had told me he came here to succeed the late chef-de-police – yes! appointed by Mr. de Braïko in the [?] of Mr. de Golovin, but attaché à la persanne du commandant with allowance of 200 ducats per annum the latter choosing to retain the Tartar chef de police – 4000 habitants males – 4000 feus (3000 shops) masons - .:. suppose at least 12000 souls – sauntered about in the town – 5 bazaars or as called here and in the East (Asia) Caravanserais, sarai means house of brick or stone containing above 100 shops each – bought 2 couverture-de-lit, large, thin, very light silk pieces about 6ft. 6in. x 5ft. 6in. = 5/- silver – the man came back with us to be paid – back at 10 25/.. – A- had eaten a cold hardboiled egg – I nothing before going  out and I all the better for it – breakfast tea and our pastet and Phophonoff cakes in about an hour – R31° and F100° in the little garden middle of the court in glimmer of sun at 10 ¾ a.m. and sat down to breakfast at 10 ¾ to about 11 ½ - R17° and F71° in our cool room quite out of the sun at 11 a.m. and now at 2 ¾ just as I have written so far – the heat greater in June and July and August but the situation high and the heat never so great as at Baku, where R is up at 45° my little London thermometer goes no higher than R35° and F106 ½° to 107° -

now at 5 p.m. had just finished writing out from here p. 209 to end of p. 210 vid. Sunday 17 and Monday 18th instant all that remained of my journal in arrear – what a blessing – our officer was to have been here at 3 or 3 ½ - sent after him at 4 – too hot – would be here in ½ hour –

Monday 1 June  did not arrive till 5 ¾! an awkward side-saddle for A- of the 2 other horses I had my choice white gray and bay – the latter a stumbler (il branche un peu) the other too looked heavy in hand and as if he had been down – chose the bay – 2 or 3 minutes from us to the officers’ house – his wife ready mounted at the door – but A-‘s saddle had twisted – and she was obliged to dismount – her saddle was put up the other (white gray) horse being heavier and larger (to fit the saddle) and at 6 we were en route – Madame Kvartano not speaking a word of anything but Russian, I made the acquaintance as well as I could this and our set-out considered – she from Astracan [Astrakhan’] aet. 25 – her son aet. 7 or 8 – she had been with the commandant colonel Charlamoff and his wife en femme de confiance, a useful sort of friend, kept and clothed for her her services – his friends rich, and of importance – one at least of influence at Tiflis – but I could not get at the gentlemans’ name – only learnt that her friends now and then sent her a present of a few ducats, and did no more for her or her boy – the conversation fell chiefly between Mr. M- and myself he delighted to talk of the qualités superbes de sa femme who had even refused him during the month il [?] faisait la cour more than once thinking herself such a bad match for him – I glad enough of this conversation rather than see him as at first impatient as he owned himself at A-‘s riding – sure the saddle would not have turned had she sat straight – afraid we should never arrive – I begged him not to think of her – I would answer for her – and then advised her to throw the other leg over she did so and we got on very fairly at footspace – Mr. M- congratulating himself and us on our not having set off sooner on account of the heat tho’ declaring he had ordered the horses at 11 a.m. and been running after them ever since – if he was the commandant, he could do better – I said, I had no idea of this – if he had the commandants’ order, it was or ought to be enough; and he gave up this view of the subject seeing that I was not quite of the same mind – thinking to myself his unpunctuality might be as natural to him as his impatience – we soon left the highroad and rode across the good green sward, and made straight for the old fortress choosing to see that before the old monument on the next hill – it was quite clear we should not have time for both – but nothing was said till we had scrambled up on horseback, to the top of the fort-hill, Kishală, Tartaricé kis vierge and Kala montagne fortifiée about 7 – he then proposed being off very early in the morning and walking to the old monument for it would be impossible to get there tonight in time! – of this I hardly took any notice and the thing passed off – A- and I climbed up the old scarped grassy mound of the principal town or fortress – a mass of grass and earth covered ruins with here and there a hole down into the vaulted underground chambers – the whole of the mountain vaulted and underground town, but now made up with rubbish – Madame M- had been here before (he never) and had been down into some of the vaults – several stories of these vaults or troglodite [troglodyte] houses and the mountain formerly defended from the fort at the top, and from the tiers of inhabitants along the sides – the fortress

belonged to a demoiselle and a prince in love with her was lord of [?] the monument hill   [crossed lines]  called Lōōtrĭ gāra, Lōōtrĕe mountain – the demoiselle (demoiselle) would not listen to the advices of the prince – he cut off the supply of water from her city – she (in one night) made an aqueduct from hill to hill (remains said Mr. M. still traceable) and got the water back, and took it from him, and then got possession of his city and reduced it to subjection – Inquired into this tradition or legend – fine view from the top of our mountain upon the various sites of old Shemacha and its fine valley and upon the valley on the other and opposite side the hill – oblong – the whole length walled and 3 or 4 remains of not large round towers remaining on the side towards Shemacha the organic sand rock so Escarpé and strié in one part where bare as to seem like an artificial glacis – some little remaining above ground on the top the stones must have been fetched away or precipitated into the vaults in the heart of the mountain – picked up at the top a bit of organic remain sandstone and gathered near to the steep bare escarpment as we returned the yellow hellebore 2ft. high – and there was some lower down in the meadow, higher perhaps 3ft. high – luxuriant – not quite but very nearly in full flower – this is the plant we sought chez le botaniste at Bagnères de Luchon – and that grows on the près de St. Jean and in some few parts of the Pyrenees but that I have never seen elsewhere – set off home again about 7 40/.. – beautiful evening having no servant with us but the man who brought the horses (the horses belong to the town; and we have nothing to pay – not to the commandant for he never stirs out, and has no horses) Mr. M- on looking down the steep, said we must each lead our own horse down – I had left A- who from being tired or something had spoken so impatiently that I walked off – I knew she could not lead her horse down but there were monsieur and the man, 2 for the 2 ladies, and I set off and left them and was soon out of sight – waited till they came up, A- walking quietly Madame riding down and the three men managing to take care of A-‘s horse and their own – I knew a- would not mount till we came to the stream – not far from the considerable village – and I was in fact not sorry for my uneasy animal had already chafed me – besides – there was no possibility of keeping the bridle in his mouth – the headstal[l] 5 or 6in. too big and would not take up – and a mere snaffle into the bargain – remounted at the stream – a little way out of the town, our stallions became uneasy – a soldier riding a mare was turned back out of our way and we alighted chez Mr. Quartano to tea about 9 – 2 officers ladies (wives and daughters of officers) by and by came to meet us, one from Astracan, one from hereabouts who had never been in Russia – good tea and Levaches (barley cakes) at my express desire – George came to say the bayadères had been waiting about an hour – got up to tea, and at home at 10 ¼   Mr. Quartano came in with us to see the open paper I said General Kotzebue had given us to authorize our having every facility we wanted; for there seemed a doubt about horses – Q- read the paper – said it was the same as the letter to desire that we should have very assistance – I said I hoped it was enough – that tho’ the commandant was always asleep asleep when I arrived before, and this time and I had waited 4 hours for my podorojna before that I really did hope he would do the best he could to let me have horses – From 10 25/.. to 11 20/.. had the bayadères

the 2 women in Persian costume as at Baku danced about 2/3 the time the 3 men produced loud discordant sounds (meant for music, a pair of kettle drums like a large and smaller [?] covered over) a sort of guitar long and narrow, and a wind instrument with a reed mouth piece sounding like a sort of hautboy-bagpipe – gave the man 1/. silver each, and offered the woman 1/50, then 2/. each, but they would have 3/. each, and I gave it - .:. the 55 minutes not good dancing of its kind = 9/. = 31/50 assignats!!! they did not dance 1/ as well as the demoiselle chez Hadji Baba at Baku – tho’ they are said to be the best here – Mr. Q- said we should have seen the dancing better and much cheaper at Baku than here – He had said give them, if 3, a ducat – but when he came and saw the five, he said give 10 silver ruble – the discrepance seemed so great, that I inquired of the bystanders of the house what to give who said 1/. each for the musicians would be enough and perhaps the women would want double – A- much tired – very fine hot day –

Alamak et Séléné sont les deux petites terreurs qui sont entrés dans notre vie il y a un peu plus d'un mois – et dans à peu près tous les recoins de la maison depuis. Ce sont deux chatons, né début avril, une fratrie à l’hérédité incertaine, mais au pelage sable marbré de brun.

Ils sont très mignons. Normal: ce sont des chatons.

Alamak, c’est le mâle; Séléné, c’est la femelle. Deux noms d’origine astronomique. Normal, pour des chatons-stars. Elle est plutôt câline, tendance machine à ronrons. Lui, beaucoup moins: il n’aime pas qu’on le caresse. J’ai même tendance à dire qu’il n’a peur de rien, sauf de ma main.

Notre maison, c’est un peu le terrain de jeu idéal: deux étages, des tonnes de bordel. Le bonheur félin! Ils explorent, souvent de conserve, et nous laissent parfois quelques cadeaux malodorants dans des endroits inaccessibles. Bon, on ne va pas se plaindre: ils sont raisonnablement propres.

Sans surprise, ce sont des boules d’énergie avec un enthousiasme qui confine à l’explosion nucléaire. Du genre à faire des courses dans notre chambre. À trois heures du matin.

Une que tout ce remue-ménage amuse moyennement, c’est la Reine-mère, à savoir Winry. L’idée de prendre deux chatons, c’est qu’ils pouvaient s’occuper parmi et éviter d’enquiquiner notre vénérable minette (quinze ans en septembre). Cette partie du plan a plutôt bien fonctionné.

Alamak et Winry

Ce qu’on n’avait peut-être pas prévu, c’est que ce petit bout de persanne de rien du tout deviendrait turbo-territoriale avec l’âge. Du coup, les deux petits fauves, elle a d’abord eu tendance à leur courir après. Comme disait une amie sur Facebook, « compagnie et coach sportif ».

Les débuts ont été rugueux, avec des chatons planqués et une minette en mode übersturmmiaou. Ça a fini par se calmer, du moins au rez-de-chaussée; à l’étage, elle défend toujours vigoureusement son territoire. Bon, quand elle ne dort pas…

Le quatrième chat de la maisonnée, le gros tas de poils de notre locataire qui vit sous les combles, reste cloîtré. Elle regarde ça de loin et désapprouve.

Quant à nous, on a de nouveau plein de chats, on est contents. Mes allergies un peu moins, mais je m’adapte. Et puis, ce n’est pas si cher payé.

Fight of the MNF Pomone against the British frigates  HMS Alceste and  HMS Active, 29 November 1811 by Pierre Julien Gilbert, 1836

On the morning of November 28th, when the HMS Alceste, 38- guns, Captain Murray Maxwell, HMS Active, 48- guns, Captain James Alexander Gordon, HMS Unite, 36- guns , Captain Edwin Henry Chamberlayne, and HMS Acorn, 20 guns, Captain George Miller Bligh, were lying in Port St. Giorgio, Lissa, they were apprised, from the signal station on the heights, of the presence, to the southward, of three suspicious sail. Maxwell, who believed the strangers to be the vessels which had escaped from the battle of Lissa in the preceding March, unmoored his squadron, in order to go in pursuit; but, as he dared not leave the island without any defence, seeing that a French force was at the time assembled at no great distance on purpose to attack it, he transferred from the Alceste and Active to three prize gunboats which lay in harbour, a Lieutenant, a Midshipman, and about 30 seamen, and, at the same time, landed the whole of the Marines of those frigates and of the Unite to garrison batteries on Hoste Island near the mouth of the harbour. Then, leaving the Acorn, with Captain Bligh, in command of the place, he warped out, and by 7 P.M. was at sea. On the morning of the 29th, the Active signalled three strange sail in the east north east. These were presently made out to be, not the remnants of M. Dubourdieu's squadron, but the MNF Pauline, 40- guns , Commodore Frarnois Gilles Montfort, MNF Pomone, 40- guns , Captain C.C.M. Ducamp-Kosamel, and MNF Persanne, 26- guns, Captain J. A. Satie, bound from Corfu to Triest. The wind was fresh from east south east., and at first the enemy, formed in line on the port tack, stood towards the British; but soon M. Montfort bore up to north west., and was chased, all the ships setting every possible stitch of canvas. At 11 A.M. the Persanne, being unable to keep up with her consorts, stood to the north east .The Unite was sent after her, and the pursuit of the Pauline and Pomone was continued by the Alceste and Active.

The action began at 1.20 P.M., the Alceste, in the first fire, having her main top-gallant mast splintered. Twenty minutes later she had her main topmast carried away just above the cap by a shot from the Pomone, which was then abeam of her. This bred great enthusiasm in the French ships, and caused the Alceste to drop astern a little; but at about 2 P.M. the Active placed herself upon the Pomone's starboard or lee quarter, and brought her to close action. The Pauline tacked, and, taking in sail, stood back to assist her consort, and at about 2.30 was hotly engaged; but, about half an hour afterwards, perceiving that the Pomone was weakening, and that the Kingfisher, 18, Commander Ewell Tritton, was approaching, Montfort set all sail again, and stood to the westward. Some desultory firing ensued between the Active and the Pomone, owing to the former having accidentally shot ahead of her antagonist. The Pomone, however, was beaten, and when, at about 3.40 P.M. the Alceste got up, and opened her starboard broadside, the Pomone struck. Neither the Alceste nor the Active was in a condition to pursue, so that the Pauline escaped without difficulty; but the Persanne was overtaken at about noon by the Unite, and, after a running fight, which lasted till four, struck when Chamberlayne drew near enough to use his broadside. The loss of the Alceste, which had only 218 men and boys on board, was 7 killed, including Midshipman Charles Nourse, and 13 wounded. The Active, which also was short-handed, had 8 killed, including Midshipman George Osborne, and 27 wounded, including Captain Gordon, and Lieutenants William Bateman Dashwood and George Haye, each of whom displayed great gallantry. Out of a crew of 332, the Pomone had 50 killed and wounded. Two of her masts fell during the action, and the third followed them soon afterwards. Captain Bosamel, who was wounded, fought his ship bravely. As much cannot be said of Montfort, who certainly deserted his colleague too hastily. The Unite, in her conflict with the Persanne, had but 1 wounded; the Persanne had 2 killed and 4 wounded. 1 Lieutenant Andrew Wilson, first of the Alceste, was made a Commander on September 17th, 1812. Dashwood and Haye, first and second of the Active, were similarly promoted on May 19th, 1812. But Lieutenant Joseph William Crabb, first of the Unite, remained in that rank until his retirement in 1851.

Les mille et une nuit

Les mille et une nuit est une collection de contes populaires. 

Certains d’origine persanne, d’autres indienne et égyptienne. Cette collection s'est constituée à partir de 900 ap. J.-C. (10ème siècle)

L'histoire est la suivante. Le sultan Shahriyar avait une femme qui le trompait.  Pour cette raison il se marie chaque jour avec une nouvelle femme et chaque matin il la fait tuer pour être sûr qu'elle ne le trompe pas. La fille du grand vizir (Shéhérazade) decide de mettre fin à cette pratique et propose de se marier avec le sultan. Son père est très préoccupé, mais il accepte. Le plan est simple: chaque soir elle commence à raconter un conte à sa sœur dont la fin est remise au lendemain. Mais le sultan est curieux et renvoie l’exécution de jour en jour pour connaître la suite. Enfin il tombe amoureux d’elle et il renonce à la faire exécuter.

La particularité de ces contes est qu'en plus de cette histoire extérieure, chaque histoire contient souvent une histoire qui est racontée par l'un des personnages.

La première traduction est d’Antoine Galland, qui l’a traduite en 1700. Au lieu d'utiliser le texte original, de nombreuses traductions ont été basées sur ce dernier mais plus récemment, des traductions plus philologiques ont été faites.
