Adventures in Naturally Curly Hair! One of the drawbacks to living in the desert is the dry air and what it does to my hair. For most of my life I've taken for granted that my hair will take a lot of punishment. I use permanent dyes and heat on it regularly. But since I moved to the Southwest it's not having it anymore. We all remember the summer of 2016 when I decided to shave my head, in part, because it was so damaged, right?? So I've been trying to learn how to embrace my curls. Right now I'm trying something called "The Curly Girl" method, which involves only using conditioner to wash your hair and NO shampoo. I'm not sure if I'll adhere to this method 100% faithfully in terms of no heat or dye (definitely not no dye), but I am going to give this no-poo + tons of leave-in + drying with an old t-shirt thing a shot. Tonight was my last shampoo, using baby shampoo, to strip the wax from my old cheap shampoo out of my hair and prepare it to begin soaking in the moisture of my new routine. Then I used THREE DOZEN perm rods to achieve a glorious crown of curls! (I tried sleeping in it but I woke up after 3 hours with a headache, so... Lesson learned!!) It's not something I'm even remotely used to seeing, but I think it's cute and I think I like it. I'm sure I'll get better at this as I do it more, too. I know I need to learn how to separate my curls better... How I achieved this look. 1. I washed my hair let it hair dry or dry it with a blower either way works the same. 2. Comb out your hair starting from ends to the root until it's a beautiful Fro, then section your hair in 4 squares and clip down with butterfly clips, scrunchi or bobbi pins they all hold hair in place. 3. Apply hair butter, I chose the Ogx Quenching Coconut Curls Curling hair I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this hair butter is makes me feel like I'm in a tropical island it smells that wonderful and makes my hair feel as soft as butter. Also, if you have thin hair apply a little bit because it will weigh your hair down. 4. Apply some gel to give it a hold, I used Kinky-Curly CURLING CUSTARD Styling gel. Take medium pieces of your hair from your section and wrap your hair around the flexi rod when you reach you ends apply more butter or the gel to hold in place I used more of the gel. The only reason I used perm rods and flexi rods is because I ran out the flexi rods lol. They are both great the flexi rods are easier on the head when you sleep on them. 5. Satin sleep cap or a silk scarf to cover your hair. 6. Wake up remove the rods by twirling your hair off and gently loose your curls and fluff up your hair with an Afro pick and enjoy your beautiful bouncy curls and be #curlfident #curls #rizos #curlyhair #pelorizo #fexirods #permrodsetonnaturalhair #bouncyhair #naturalhairjourney
