32 Pericles by William Shakespeare dir Doug Finlayson. Considered by many to be one of Shakespeare’s worst plays, or not even written by Shakespeare himself, this became the surprise smash of the season. Standing ovations every night. Most of that was due to Doug’s direction and the casting of Peter Cook (not that one) as the lead. Peter is a deaf actor and signed his part, while Margo Buchanan spoke and signed along with his lines. It was also a highly visual show with some judicious cutting. The set design by John C. Stark gave the Ewing facade a very nautical look that included a mast that extended many feet above the top of the facade, and Peter would climb to the top and curse the storm that raged as his wife stuggled in childbirth. There was also a sail that would go to the top of that mast so Pericles’s shadow was cast against it as he kneeled in front of his wife’s β€˜grave’ and he would let loose this mournful howl and the sail would come crashing down to the floor. I got to drop the sail. And I also got to learn a little rigging. We were also the first show I was aware of that did the blue fabric as ocean bit. So six of us would be on the main floor thrashing away with our fabrics as the storm raged. Then Pericles would put his β€˜dead’ wife into a coffin on the above, but it was a box with a door on the side that Pam Klarup, who was playing Thaisa would roll out of, and then Pericles would push it over the side, and the six of us would carry the coffin off stage and out the vom. Pam would then run around the outside, climb back in the box and we would carry her in and OOPS, still alive. One of the things that I appreciated about this production was that all the kingdoms had a decidedly different feel to them. There was not a dry eye in the house in the reconciliation scene. Not a lot of stories behind this one. Just a lot of memories of the show itself. #retrospective #1993 #illinoisshakespearefestival #periclesprinceoftyre #dougfinlayson #morejerkofflords #bloomingtonnormal #ewingmanor #petercook #Johncstark #williamshakespeare (at Ewing Manor) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Adq0dJ-iz/?igshid=acankheyggsn
