yk one thing i’ll say about the common hawkeye goes home and isolates himself fic trope is that it actually does make sense to me as a logical follow-up to his announcement that he’s going to stay in crabapple cove and do family doctoring

in part that’s definitely me projecting my utter personal hatred of small towns onto the situation, so I can’t help but see that choice as self-destructive and/or regressive, and in part it’s because he’s essentially quitting surgery and as an objective interpretation of the show and Hawkeye’s character there’s no way for me to see that as anything but negative.

so I can understand why isolation goes hand in hand with that for some people. it does in real life a lot of the time.

But yk, I think it would be most interesting if he was involved in CC events, reconnecting with old friends and family, staying busy and social, but it was still negative. Not as in isolating himself would be a better alternative, but like the more connections he makes the more tied he is to this bad choice he’s made to stay in a small town and the more he needs something to help break him out of it.
