“Ghosts are just fiction.”

The denial comes naturally and Charlotte feels it when she says it. It hasn’t stopped her longing for the ghost that’s supposed to exist in the house, either of them. Viola, she knows, would kill her…. Still she can’t help hoping that Perdita will find her. She is close enough to Hannah Grose, her housekeeper, the groundskeeper too, but even then she has to hide how she really feels.

The change comes when Hannah finds her half-beaten, refusing to stand again. Dominic is long gone, headed back to the bedroom they share. The aching silence is soon shattered by a scream, Dominic’s scream. Perdita flickers into being that evening, moving to settle beside Charlotte, watching as Hannah settles by her other side. Hannah and Charlotte’s quiet love had called her forward and Perdita smiles softly at the peace in Charlotte’s sigh.

“Rest well, dear Charlotte.”

Perdita’s voice is soft, sweetly warm and Charlotte smiles shyly at the feeling of soft ghostly fingers against her injured cheek. Hannah’s sigh is soft, contented. Love, between three, is unusual, but then Hannah and Charlotte seem a couple and Perdita is more than happy to be their little secret.
