Pokemon Scarlet/Violet Character Names Explained
Fun fact! The characters in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet are all named after various plants. Yes, all of them. The localizations for their English names did their best to stay true to this, but sometimes their namesake is not always obvious in the English names.
So I thought I'd collect them all and summarize them in a post! You can find all these on a Wiki, but I thought it would be handy to have them all in one place. Warning: this is an image-heavy post.
Team Star Bosses
Tumblr media
Giacomo (ピーニャ Piña) - Pineapple: Giacomo is derived from the pineapple's scientific name (Ananas comosus). It's easy to guess why Giacomo was named after the pineapple, with his spikey hair. (Also, yeah, pineapples don't grow on trees, a lot of people don't know that.)
Tumblr media
Mela (メロコ Meloco) - Peach Tree: You'd think Mela would be named after the pepper plant, but no, she is named after the Spanish word for peach. Go figure. (Fun fact, it is Rika the Ground-type user who is named after the pepper!)
Tumblr media
Atticus (シュウメイ Shūmei) - Japanese Anemone: His English name is derived from the plant genus 'Hepatica.' The Japanese Anemone is a flower in the buttercup family, native to Asia.
Tumblr media
Ortega (オルティガ Ortiga) - Stinging Nettles: A traditional medicinal herb, this plant has stinging hairs that irritate skin if touched. A pretty aggressive plant!
Tumblr media
Eri (ビワ Biwa) - Loquat: A fruit tree native to China and popular in Japan. If you're from the US, you might have heard it called "Japanese plum" or "Chinese plum." Eri is dervied from the plant's scientific name 'Eriobotrya japonica.'
Gym Leaders
Tumblr media
Katy (カエデ Kaede) - Maple Tree: In addition to being named after the maple tree, Katy's English name might also be a play on 'Katydid'
Tumblr media
Brassius (コルサ Colza) - Rapeseed: This plant is in the Brassicaceae family, which are a wide range of cultivated crops in the mustard family. Rapeseed in particular is best known for the vegetable oil made from its seeds (canola oil)
Tumblr media
Iono (ナンジャモ Nanjamo) - Chinese Fringetree: A species of tree in the olive family that is native to Asia and produces many pretty white flowers. The Japanese name for Iono is a name used for unknown trees (literal translation: "What is it?"), with the Chinese Fringetree often being the culprit of an unknown tree. Likewise, Iono's English name is supposed to sound like "I dunno"
Tumblr media
Kofu (ハイダイ Haidai) - Kelp: There are many, many species of seaweed; Kofu's English name refers to a group of edible kelp in particular (often called 'kombu')
Tumblr media
Ryme (ライム Lime) - Lime: A play on the words "lime" and "rhyme"
Tumblr media
Tulip (リップ Lip): In this case, there is no mystery what plant her English name is referring to!
Tumblr media
Grusha (グルーシャ Grusha) - Pear Tree: Yeah, Grusha is named after pears. The Russian word for pear, in particular. I have no idea why. Pear trees do have white flowers, so perhaps that's why.
Paldea League
Tumblr media
Rika (チリ Chili) - Chili Pepper: Her English name is short for 'Paprika' and her Japanese name is a pun (chili and 地 chi - ground)
Tumblr media
Poppy (ポピー Poppy): Again, just like with Tulip, this name is already obvious for English speakers!
Tumblr media
Larry (アオキ Aoki) - Spotted Laurel: A shrub with pretty gold specks on its leaves; thrives in damp environments
Tumblr media
Hassel (ハッサク Hassaku) - Hassaku Orange: This is a hybrid citrus tree between an orange and a grapefruit
Tumblr media
Geeta (オモダカ Omodaka) - Threeleaf Arrowhead: An aquatic plant that grows in swamps and has a starchy tuber that can be eaten. Her English name is derived from the genus Sagittaria.
Main Cast
Tumblr media
Arven (ペパー Pepper) - Peppermint: Arven is named after the peppermint plant, although his English name derives from the scientific name for a close relative, the corn mint (Mentha arvensis). I like to think Arven was named after peppermint for being a bit 'spicy' and terse when you first meet him, but that is just my wild speculation.
Tumblr media
Penny (ボタン Botan) - Peony: Penny is named after the peony flower; the tree peony in particular, which is a manmade cultivar that is a shrub/tree rather than herbaceous. The tree peony is incredibly popular in China, for both ornamental and traditional chinese medicine reasons.
Tumblr media
Nemona (ネモ Nemo) - Baby Blue Eyes: The Baby Blue Eyes is a native wildflower to North America (California & Oregon in particular), unlike a lot of the plants on this list. Nemona's name derives from its scientific name in particular (Nemophila menziesii). It bothers me to no end that Nemona is named after a plant called 'baby blue eyes' when her eyes are orange; the California poppy (which is bright orange) seems to make more sense for her? But, who knows what went on in the naming process.
Juliana (アオイ Aoi) - While the player character names are not directly named after a plant, they are inspired by plants in general. Juliana's Japanese name is a pun that means 'springtime' and 'green/young' (her English name comes from the word 'juvenile')
Florian (ハルト Haruto) - Florian's Japanese name, on the other hand, is a pun with 'springtime' and 'spring.' His English name comes from 'flower.'

Conclusion
It’s no secret that I’ve never been a huge fan of lip plumping products. The ingredient lists of lip plumpers usually contain cinnamon oil, capsaicin, ginger, mint, hyaluronic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, wintergreen, retinol, etc. Some of these components are known to temporarily plump our lips by irritating them, while others cause a little puffiness as well as flush by boosting the flow of blood through them.
Macrene Actives is a toxic-free plant based skincare line formulated by Dr. Macrene Alexiades. She’s received her three degrees from Harvard University: a BA from Harvard University, an MD from Harvard Medical School and a PhD in Genetics from Harvard University. And, she was a Fulbright Scholar with a research award year in Europe!
When I read about a lip filler treatment formulated by a board certified dermatologist that was an alternative to lip fillers, I knew I had to try it for myself. This topical lip treatment noticeably plumps and conditions, while combating fine lines and wrinkles. Packed with a multitude of active and natural ingredients, it can be worn under or over your favorite lipstick to gradually and naturally fill and soften your pout.
Macrene Actives’ ‘High Performance Lip Filler’ is the key to achieving a plumper pout. It’s enriched with Hyaluronic Acid and Goldenrod Extract to help add volume, while an infusion of Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline Peptide minimizes the appearance of fine lines. Peppermint and Spearmint Oil leave behind a fresh scent. Dr Macrene created this specifically for people who didn’t want to get lip fillers.
The lip filler treatment goes on as a light oil with a minty scent. It’s easily absorbed and instantly providing moisture. If needed, you can layer something like Aquaphor ontop at night! This needs to be used 2-3 times a day for good results. This lip product was a total dream to use. A small amount went a long way and it didn’t cause any irritation or stinging. Within 2 weeks, I noticed plumper lips that had a visible difference in the plushness. My previously lined lips looked healthy and pouty. For anyone who wants plumper lips without resorting to fillers, this products comes highly recommended!

Botanical Name: Mentha Piperita
Extraction Method: Steam Distilled
Origin: India
Product Description: Peppermint is a herbaceous rhizomatous perennial plant that grows to be 30–90 cm (12–35 in) tall, with smooth stems, square in cross section. It generally grows best in moist, shaded locations, and expands by underground rhizomes. Peppermint oil has a high concentration of natural pesticides, mainly pulegone (Found mainly in Mentha arvensis var. piperascens Cornmint, Field Mint, Japanese Mint and to a lesser extent-6,530 ppm in Mentha x piperita subsp. nothosubsp. piperita) and menthone.
Tumblr media
Note: Because of the very high menthol content of this oil, it tends to crystalize. We would recommend placing the bottle in a very hot water bath, and changing the water frequently until it is back to its liquid state, then gently agitate before use.
Cautions: Dilute very well before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping), be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.
Caution: All of our products are for external use only.

The Allure of Menthol Crystals: Nature's Cooling Gem
Menthol crystals, with their crisp, cooling sensation and distinct aroma, have long captivated those in the realms of wellness, cosmetics, and culinary arts. These remarkable crystals, derived from the essential oil of the mint family, specifically Mentha arvensis, are celebrated not only for their sensory impact but also for their wide range of applications and benefits. In this article, we will explore the origins, properties, uses, and benefits of menthol crystals, while shedding light on why they are such a valued commodity across various industries.
The Origins of Menthol Crystals
Menthol crystals are primarily derived from the Mentha arvensis plant, commonly known as cornmint or Japanese mint. This hardy plant thrives in various parts of the world, including India, China, and Brazil. The process of obtaining menthol crystals begins with the extraction of mint essential oil through steam distillation. Once the oil is extracted, it is subjected to a cooling process, where the menthol separates out and forms crystals. These crystals are then purified and packaged for various uses.
The Science Behind Menthol Crystals
Chemically, menthol is a cyclic monoterpene alcohol, which contributes to its strong aroma and cooling effect. The cooling sensation associated with menthol crystals is due to their ability to trigger the cold-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucous membranes. This is why applying menthol topically or inhaling its vapors gives a refreshing and cooling sensation, making it a popular ingredient in a wide range of products, from pain-relief balms to peppermint-flavored confectioneries.
Applications of Menthol Crystals
The versatility of menthol crystals is evident in their numerous applications across various industries:
1. Aromatherapy and Wellness
In the field of aromatherapy, menthol crystals are prized for their invigorating and therapeutic properties. Their strong, refreshing scent helps clear the mind, alleviate stress, and enhance focus. When used in diffusers or steam inhalations, menthol crystals can help alleviate respiratory issues such as colds, sinus congestion, and bronchitis by opening up the nasal passages and reducing inflammation.
2. Skincare and Cosmetics
Menthol crystals are a common ingredient in skincare and cosmetic products due to their cooling and soothing properties. They are often found in formulations for acne treatments, where they help reduce redness and inflammation, and in after-sun lotions and creams to provide relief from sunburns. Additionally, menthol crystals are used in lip balms, foot creams, and other personal care products to impart a refreshing, tingly sensation.
3. Pharmaceuticals
In the pharmaceutical industry, menthol crystals are widely used in topical ointments, creams, and balms for their analgesic properties. When applied to the skin, menthol creates a cooling effect that distracts the brain from the sensation of pain, providing temporary relief from minor aches, muscle cramps, and headaches. It is also a key ingredient in cough syrups, lozenges, and throat sprays, where it soothes the throat and reduces irritation.
4. Food and Beverage Industry
Menthol crystals are also a popular flavoring agent in the food and beverage industry. They are used to add a refreshing minty flavor to confectioneries like candies, chocolates, and chewing gums. In beverages, menthol crystals can be used to enhance the flavor of teas, cocktails, and even certain types of alcoholic drinks. The strong minty taste of menthol is often associated with cleanliness and freshness, making it a favorite in oral hygiene products like toothpaste and mouthwashes as well.
5. Household Products
Beyond personal care and food, menthol crystals are also found in various household products. Their strong, pleasant aroma is utilized in air fresheners, candles, and cleaning products to impart a fresh, clean scent to living spaces. Additionally, due to their natural pest-repellent properties, menthol crystals are sometimes included in formulations for natural insect repellents.
The Benefits of Using Menthol Crystals
The appeal of menthol crystals extends beyond their refreshing scent and cooling sensation. They offer a myriad of benefits that make them indispensable in both personal care and health applications:
1. Natural Pain Relief
One of the most celebrated benefits of menthol crystals is their ability to provide natural pain relief. When applied topically, menthol works by cooling the skin and then warming it up, which helps to reduce the perception of pain. This dual action makes menthol crystals an effective remedy for minor aches, muscle pain, joint stiffness, and headaches.
2. Respiratory Support
Menthol crystals are particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from respiratory issues. The inhalation of menthol vapors can help clear congestion, soothe irritated airways, and promote easier breathing. This makes menthol crystals a common ingredient in decongestants, chest rubs, and steam inhalation therapies used to treat colds, flu, and sinusitis.
3. Skincare and Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Menthol’s cooling effect is not only soothing but also anti-inflammatory, making it an excellent ingredient for skincare products. It can help calm irritated skin, reduce itching, and alleviate the discomfort associated with conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and insect bites. Furthermore, its antimicrobial properties make it useful in formulations aimed at treating acne and other skin infections.
4. Mental Clarity and Focus
In aromatherapy, menthol crystals are valued for their ability to enhance mental clarity and focus. The refreshing scent of menthol stimulates the senses and can help alleviate mental fatigue, making it easier to concentrate on tasks. It is often used in work environments or during study sessions to promote alertness and reduce stress.
5. Versatility in Use
Menthol crystals offer unparalleled versatility. They can be used in a variety of forms—dissolved in oils or alcohol for topical application, melted in warm water for steam inhalation, or added to products like balms, lotions, and candles. This flexibility allows for the creation of customized solutions for a range of needs, from skincare to aromatherapy and pain relief.
How to Use Menthol Crystals
Using menthol crystals effectively requires a basic understanding of their potency and how to handle them safely:
1. Inhalation Therapy
To clear nasal congestion or soothe a sore throat, add a few menthol crystals to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam. Cover your head with a towel to trap the steam, and breathe deeply for several minutes. This method helps open up the airways and provides quick relief from respiratory discomfort.
2. Topical Application
Menthol crystals can be dissolved in carrier oils, such as coconut or jojoba oil, for topical application. This mixture can be applied to sore muscles, aching joints, or the temples to alleviate headaches. Always dilute menthol crystals before applying them to the skin, as they are highly concentrated and can cause irritation if used undiluted.
3. Homemade Products
For those who enjoy DIY skincare or household products, menthol crystals can be incorporated into a variety of recipes. For instance, you can add them to homemade lip balms, body scrubs, or foot creams to impart a cooling, refreshing effect. They can also be used in the creation of natural insect repellents or air fresheners.
Safety Considerations
While menthol crystals offer numerous benefits, it is important to use them safely:
Dilution: Always dilute menthol crystals before applying them to the skin or using them in products. Their high concentration can cause skin irritation if not properly diluted.
Avoid Ingestion: Menthol crystals should not be ingested in their pure form. When using them in food or beverages, ensure they are fully dissolved and used in small, controlled amounts.
Storage: Store menthol crystals in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, to maintain their potency and effectiveness.
Menthol powder, derived from mint oils, particularly peppermint, is a highly versatile and widely used substance in various industries. Known for its distinctive cooling sensation and refreshing aroma, menthol powder has found its way into numerous products, from cosmetics and personal care items to pharmaceuticals and food. This article delves into the origins, properties, and diverse applications of menthol powder, highlighting its significant benefits.
Origins of Menthol Powder
Menthol is a naturally occurring compound found in the essential oils of mint plants, particularly in peppermint (Mentha piperita) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). The extraction of menthol involves a distillation process, followed by crystallization, to obtain the pure menthol crystals. These crystals are then ground into a fine powder, resulting in what we know as menthol powder. This form allows for easy incorporation into various products, ensuring its widespread use.
Chemical Properties of Menthol Powder
Menthol is an organic compound classified as a cyclic terpene alcohol. Its chemical formula is C10H20O, and it exists as a white crystalline solid at room temperature. One of the most notable properties of menthol is its ability to trigger cold-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucous membranes. This interaction produces a cooling sensation without altering the actual temperature, making menthol powder a popular ingredient in products designed for topical application.
Applications of Menthol Powder
1. Pharmaceuticals
Menthol powder is extensively used in the pharmaceutical industry due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a common ingredient in over-the-counter medications such as pain relief creams, ointments, and cough syrups. Menthol provides temporary relief from minor aches and pains associated with muscle strains, sprains, and arthritis. In addition, its cooling sensation is soothing for sore throats and helps alleviate nasal congestion when inhaled through vaporizers or lozenges.
2. Personal Care and Cosmetics
The cooling and refreshing properties of menthol powder make it a favorite in the personal care and cosmetics industry. It is a key component in various skincare products, including lotions, creams, and lip balms, providing a soothing effect on irritated skin. Additionally, menthol is used in hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, where it stimulates the scalp and gives a fresh, tingling sensation. The powder is also a popular ingredient in oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash, where it imparts a minty flavor and promotes oral hygiene.
3. Food and Beverage Industry
In the food and beverage industry, menthol powder is primarily used as a flavoring agent. Its strong minty taste is a common addition to chewing gums, candies, and chocolates. Moreover, menthol is used in the production of certain alcoholic beverages, providing a refreshing twist to the drink. However, its usage in food products is typically in minute quantities due to its potent flavor and the intense cooling sensation it imparts.
4. Aromatherapy
Menthol powder plays a significant role in aromatherapy, a practice that uses essential oils for therapeutic purposes. The invigorating aroma of menthol is known to enhance mental clarity, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. It is commonly used in diffusers and inhalers, where its strong scent helps clear the respiratory tract, making it easier to breathe. Additionally, menthol is often combined with other essential oils in massage oils and balms, where it provides a cooling effect and relieves tension in the muscles.
5. Industrial Uses
Beyond its use in consumer products, menthol powder has several industrial applications. It is used in the manufacturing of cooling gels and sprays for industrial and sports use. These products are often applied by athletes to reduce muscle soreness and inflammation after intense physical activity. Menthol is also a key ingredient in certain chemical formulations, such as in the production of pesticides and repellents, where its strong odor acts as a deterrent to pests.
Benefits of Menthol Powder
The widespread use of menthol powder across various industries can be attributed to its numerous benefits:
1. Cooling Sensation
One of the most significant benefits of menthol powder is its ability to provide a cooling sensation. This makes it an invaluable ingredient in products designed to relieve pain, irritation, and discomfort. The cooling effect is particularly beneficial in treating conditions like sunburn, insect bites, and muscle pain, as it provides immediate relief without the need for ice or cold compresses.
2. Analgesic Properties
Menthol powder is widely recognized for its analgesic properties. It works by activating certain receptors in the skin that reduce the sensation of pain. This makes it a popular ingredient in pain relief creams, balms, and patches, providing temporary relief from conditions such as arthritis, muscle strains, and headaches.
3. Anti-Inflammatory Effects
In addition to its pain-relieving properties, menthol powder also has anti-inflammatory effects. It helps reduce inflammation and swelling, making it useful in the treatment of conditions such as sprains, joint pain, and inflammatory skin conditions. The anti-inflammatory properties of menthol are also beneficial in respiratory conditions, as it helps reduce inflammation in the airways and facilitates easier breathing.
4. Aromatic and Flavoring Agent
The strong minty aroma and flavor of menthol powder make it an excellent aromatic and flavoring agent. Its refreshing scent is widely used in perfumes, candles, and air fresheners, while its minty flavor enhances the taste of food and beverages. The use of menthol in oral care products also helps freshen breath and promote oral hygiene.
5. Versatility
The versatility of menthol powder is evident in its wide range of applications. Whether in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, or industrial products, menthol’s ability to provide cooling, pain relief, and aromatic benefits makes it an essential ingredient in many formulations.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
While menthol powder is generally considered safe for use, it is essential to be aware of potential side effects and precautions. In some individuals, menthol can cause skin irritation, particularly when used in high concentrations. It is advisable to perform a patch test before applying products containing menthol powder to the skin. Additionally, menthol should not be ingested in large quantities, as it can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and other adverse effects.
