Daily fish fact #813
Peppermint angelfish!
Tumblr media
It lives 53 to 120 meters (174 to 394 feet) deep which makes it a rare sight — and very expensive in the aquarium trade. Like other marine angelfish, it is a protogynous hermaphrodite, which means that the females can change their sex to become male.

 Ikan Killi
Tumblr media

What Should You Do Daily if You Have an Aquarium?
Passionate aquarists keep expensive fish in their aquariums. It’s way more than just a hobby for most of them when they invest thousands in buying and breeding expensive aquarium fish from Asian Arowana to Flowerhorn Cichlid, Peppermint Angelfish, and so on. Even with a Kintons aquarium, where you keep molly, guppies, neon tetra, goldfish, angel fish, etc., you need to follow a few regular rituals to keep your fish healthy.
Here are a few things to do daily if you have an aquarium—
Buy nutritious food for your aquarium fish
Give your fish the best quality nutritious food. Buy premium-quality sakura koi food online considering the aquarium fish that you have. Some fish require living worms in their daily diet. However, this causes excessive dirt in your tank. Therefore, have a word with experts and follow the diet routine of your fish necessary for their healthy survival.
Clean the filters once in a while
You need to clean the filters installed inside your sobo aquarium 2.5 feet or of any other size once in a while. However, you can at least take out the sieve-like layer from the filter and wash it off daily if you have bigger fish for increasing the functionality of the filter.
Run the pump daily
It is strongly suggested by experts to run the submersible pumps daily in your fish tank Malaysia for increasing the oxygen level in the water and reduce the carbon-di-oxide level from the water.
Once every week, change a portion of water from the top with fresh water in your fish tank to create a healthy environment for the fish.

Peppermint Angelfish Facts
Tumblr media
Peppermint angelfish are primarily found in pairs or small groups which provide protection against predators. These fish never stray far from their hiding spots when feeding. As of 2019, only a single peppermint angelfish was on display anywhere in the world: this was at the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu. Peppermint angelfish generally communicate with each other through chemical signals in urine and bile. The peppermint angelfish is a small species, growing anywhere between 1 and 3 inches long. The front of the body is curved into a snout, whereas the back fins are square-shaped. The dorsal fin on the back has a spiny appearance. By far the most prominent characteristic is the five alternating vertical bright orange and white stripes along the entire body that resemble the peppermint candy for which they’re named. Their side fins and tail fin are completely translucent as well.

A comment was added to a recent post of mine that I wanted to address:
"There aren't any states where you can legally collect and keep wildlife without any sort of permit or license. There is just no regulation so you'd be highly unlikely to be caught or fined but plenty of people illegally catch fish, frogs, turtles ect. And keep them as pets. Any native species to your state is illegal to keep and that is countrywide"
Some of this is true and some of it is not. But let's dig into it a little. First of all, every single state has their own rules and regulations about fish catching and keeping. A few of the states (California and Arizona are what come to my mind off the cuff) allow for no collection of live aquatic species at all. If you want to keep what you catch, they have to be dead. Frustrating, but thems the rules.
More than not, however, states allow for some collection under some circumstances. At the stricter end, you might need a specific permit. On the lighter end, you might just need a fishing license. Virginia is a case like this. According to the 2022 fishing regulations, with an active fishing license you can keep up to 20 specimens aggregate of certain non-game, non-protected species of fish (some other species can be unlimited). The wording of "collection" vice "harvesting" and "personal use" are the imperative phrases. Note that if they meant you could only keep dead specimens, they would have called that out specifically as they do later in the page for snakeheads.
That's not to say there aren't other rules in there too - the specific bodies of water you can fish from, the specific collection methods, and fish lengths all have considerations as well. These are things you need to keep in mind when fishing.
I'd also like to point out that native fishes are indeed sold in fish stores, so claiming a ban on them would be senseless - Texas Cichlids, Sailfin Mollies, Mexican Tetras, Florida Flagfish, Rosy Red Minnows, Blue Chromis Damsels, Longspine Porcupinefish, basically all Gar species, Sheepshead Minnows, Lined Seahorses, Peppermint Basses, Queen Angelfish, and Sergeant Majors are just some of the many species we have native - and almost every native saltwater species is wild caught.
[As always - this is my interpretation of the laws, and though it is supported by other expert opinions and literature, it’s not legally binding. Always review laws and regulations in your state yourself and consult your local fish and game reps if you have concerns!]

Can someone help me find a fish species?
My friend (who isn’t on tumblr) was telling me about a fish she had when she was younger, but she never learned the name of it. She knows it was a tropical saltwater fish who ate live fish. She describes him as the smallest in the tank (the only one with a recognizable species was the pufferfish, who was bigger than the one I’m looking for. I know that isn’t helpful considering how varied pufferfish sizes can be). She said he was brown with white stripes but after some searching she pointed out that the white stripes are more like white dashes going from head to tail.
By her own recollection she says THIS is the closest fishy body type to her pet (I think that’s a peppermint angelfish? I’m not sure though so he might be some species of Angelfish?) she doesn’t have any pictures of him, sadly, otherwise this might be a lot easier.

Here is the mer! Roman! He’s based off an au made by myself and @theangstking. He’s based off of a peppermint angelfish!
To spare all of the background details and put it into a simple er, summary. He’s a ‘lost prince’ of a mer kingdom, and grew up as a human, only discovering his half mer heritage when he meets another mer one night (Virgil).
Plot stuff happens but Roman eventually gets the ability to switch between his mer form and human form. The first time he’s in mer form is when his royal blood is confirmed, as only the royal mers have markings on their face (think of it as a crown of sorts).
