I think we've definitely got to remember regional differences here. I've never been even slightly worried about contamination (here a lot of ppl worry more about contamination in the supermarket food supply chain with pesticides/herbicides rather than out of it) I was taught to avoid food that's low down as its more likely to have had animals peeing on it ect
BUT (and this is a pretty major but) foraging from fruit trees and stuff on land you don't own is technically illegal here (and not just like ppls Gardens, we're talking ppl getting funny about you taking an apple from a overhanging branch on a public footpath when you can see they're all rotting on the ground). It's also illegal to take seaweed if you don't ask the landowner. Obviously nobody is getting prosecuted for taking small amounts to eat but cause its illegal people do see it as like a moral issue??? So while I've always done it it's not something I'd shout about
so far the most baffling response to the graveyard fruit question are people apparently horrified or surprised that anyone would even consider picking any fruit from any tree anywhere that was just out there, not owned by them or not purchased from a store.
breaks my brain. you see a tree or a bush with fruit outside - not even on someone's property, just outside - and you don't take from it? you don't eat the fruit? why? what?
