So I maaaaaay have decorated my tree to match Pentatonix new album... It was too perfectly within my style not to!

I was heavily debating making a playlist to go along with the HSMTMTS fic series I'm doing and then remembered that I basically just play the Superfruit "Future Friends" album on loop when I'm writing it, so that doesn't help me.

Partially because listen. LISTEN. Every fucking kid I went to high school with in SLC had a weird Pentatonix obsession for like the full 4 years I was there, and Superfruit is literally two of the Pentatonix guys who just decided to make incredibly gay music about boys. So you can't tell me, you CAN'T tell me that Seb and Carlos wouldn't eat that shit up on a regular basis.

Also tbh I think I'd murder for a Frankie and Joe cover of any of their stuff because I think it would fit their voices REALLY well.

Pentatonix has already won three Grammys, but on Sunday they’re up for yet another one: Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for their 2021 album, Evergreen. The group’s Scott Hoying says even though they’re old hands at the Grammys by now, there’s one thing about this nomination that’s special.

“We’ve never been nominated for an album before, and we’ve put out so many albums,” Scott tells ABC Audio, estimating they’ve released about 16 projects.

“Evergreen was just a really special album to us because we had been away from each other for longer than we ever had in our career because of the pandemic,” he explains. “And we got to come back together … and we went in and we built it together and, like, stripped it apart and built it more. And we just love how it turned out.”

“It’s probably our favorite album collectively as a band,” he adds. “And so to see it be our first nomination in years” — since 2017, to be exact — “and to be nominated as a piece of work, an album, was very validating and exciting and fulfilling.”

The bad news is that there’s some fierce competition in that category, starting with Thank You, the first album in 15 years by the legendary Diana Ross.

“I know! Oh, my gosh. And Kelly Clarkson, and Michael Bublé and Norah Jones. I was like, ‘Whoa. Stacked category,’” Scott says. Kelly and Norah are nominated for their recent Christmas albums, while Michael’s up for his 2022 album, Higher.

Scott’s not too concerned about winning, though.

“Honestly … I know this sounds like a diplomatic answer, but I really mean it … just to be nominated with such icons that I grew up loving is really, really cool.”

Dolly Parton - Jolene 1973

Dolly Parton is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and philanthropist. With a career spanning over fifty years, Parton has been described as a country legend and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has had 25 singles reach no. 1 on the Billboard country music charts, a record for a female artist (tied with Reba McEntire). She has 44 career Top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and she has 110 career-charted singles over the past 40 years. She has composed over 3,000 songs. She has founded a number of charitable and philanthropic organizations, chief among them is the Dollywood Foundation, which manages a number of projects to bring education and poverty relief to East Tennessee where she grew up. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton donated $1 million towards research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which funded the critical early stages of development of the Moderna vaccine.

"Jolene" was released on October 15, 1973, as the first single and title track from her the thirteenth solo studio album Jolene, and became Parton's second solo number one single on the country charts. "Jolene" became Parton's first top ten hit song in the UK, reaching number seven in the UK Singles Chart in 1976. It also re-entered the chart when Parton performed at the Glastonbury festival in 2014.

According to Parton, the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean, at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married. In an interview, she also revealed that Jolene's name and appearance are based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph.

During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show in 2018, Parton revealed that she wrote "Jolene" on the same day that she wrote "I Will Always Love You".

"Jolene" was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance twice, in 1975 and 1976. The first nomination was for the original recording, and the second was for a live recording from the TV series In Concert. It did not win either time, but in 2017, a cover by the a cappella group Pentatonix which featured Parton as a guest singer won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

In 2023 she released her forty-ninth solo studio album, Rockstar, a collaborative project with a variety of rock musicians and where "Jolene" is sung by Italian rockband Måneskin, listen to it here!

Kaito knew from the start who you were. He had already followed you on every platform. He bought some of your merchandises too. But you wondered how he became a fan. So, this is the story on how he became your biggest fan. 

Kaito is known for keeping up with the lasted gossip. He’s scrolling on social media half his time. As he is scrolling on TikTok. He came across your page. You were currently singing a song as you do your makeup. No autotune or any background sounds. It was all just your voice. You were singing “It's different now” Pentatonix Version.

Kaito loved to sweet sound of your voice. It was smooth, gentle and full of emotions. He clicked on your page to explore a little to learn more about you. You had posted a few videos from your concerts. He played the video that was pinned on top. There you were wearing the most beautiful outfit as you sing and dance to, “Self Portrait.” 

The way you held confidence and style to your performance. He loved it all, so he followed your account. Kaito even bench watched all of your concert videos. Taking notes of each of your songs so he can download them onto his playlist. He listens to them on repeat, day in and day out. Your voice was so angelic to him. The time you published the soft-core album. BAM, that's now his song for when he tries to sleep. Now that he is your friend. He has become more of a diehard fan of yours. He brags about how amazing you are. Often makes you blush at his sweet dorky compliments.  

Now you might be thinking, he couldn’t possibly get worse? You are wrong, once you and him become a couple. He would burn holes in his pocket to support you. Got a concert coming up? Bought the tickets and will drag Luca with him. Upcoming interview on TV? Set a time and date on his phone. Want him to be there for your rehearsals? You can count on him to make it. If he doesn’t need to take extra classes. Other than that, he’s pretty normal. Just a normal boyfriend supporting you while standing in the crowd. Tears and snot running down as you sing your heart out.  

Your voice is so heavenly to him. 

Lyca: The Night We Meet: Lord Huron 

You took a break from your career. Of course, part of it was due to you being at Darkwick.  Although, you still sing or hum to yourself. Being around the Ghouls and all, has inspired you a lot. So, here you are writing and playing on the guitar. Your friend, Lyca always enjoyed the stories you and Subaru would read. Sure, it has a lot of pictures, but it helped him understand. So, you came up with an idea. What if you came up with songs that were easier for him to understand? Lyca isn’t stupid or anything. You just thought it would make him happy if you wrote the books he likes in song form. Therefore, that's what you are doing. 

Lyca sat next to you as he glances from his drawings every now and then. As he looks over to your pages. He can read a little bit of what you wrote down. After you wrote down the chorus part. You played the melody on the guitar. Even though it was a small bit. You have played, he liked it. He can tell that this one will be touching, but soothing. 

After an hour of working, both of you decided to show case what you’ve worked on. He showed you, his drawings. It was few pictures of the things that were around the room. One of them was you writing. In the drawing, you were seated by the table writing down the music notes as you stick out your tongue. Lyca has placed in every detail he saw. From the tongue sticking out, your eyelashes, your side hair neatly tucked behind your ear. Everything, this of course makes you feel warm. After he showed you, his work. You played the song,” The night we met.” 

Hearing your voice sing the song. He finds himself in some kind of trance. His entire focus was you and only you. The rest of the room becomes a blur. Now he was met with these strange feelings. He wanted to be closer to you. Not just physically, but emotionally too. But of course, he wasn’t sure of that until he asked Subaru. Right now, he felt calm but nervous. He felt warm but cold at the same time. He was lost but confused about every single thing he was feeling. 

Once, you have finished singing. You have asked, him what does he think. He didn’t respond due to all of the confusion in his head. Lyca finally snaps out of it after you called several times. After repeating the question, he answered. He really liked it. It makes him feel calm.  

Just like you do for him when you are around

Jiro: Six Pills Rosendale(warning: mental health topic: small theme of depression, anxiety and coping mechanisms)

As an Idol, comes a lot of hate too. You’re not pretty or handsome enough. Your music sucks and so and so, is better than you. Your outfit is ugly. No one watches you on tv, or even care if you die. You even hate extremely vile comments under your posts. Disgusting comments you wouldn’t dare to read again or repeat what was said. You know that people are mean. People are simply, nasty. Yet, it really hurts you. As an Idol you began to compare yourself to other Idols. Little by little, your self-esteem crumbled. Late at night, you decided to go on a walk. Things started to get into your head after reading some of the comments on your last post. So, you decided a walk to clear your mind. Your feet took you wherever it wanted. You ended up in front of mortkraken. Jiro was seen by the window with his back facing you.  

Slowly turning around, the front door opens. “MC? What are you doing here?” the sound of a deep voice was heard. Turning back around to face the voice. It was Jiro, no surprise there. “I was just walking around.” You played it off with a nervous laugh. The cold wind passes by, and it sends shiver down your body. He then asks you if you wanted to come in since its cold. With hesitation, you ended up agreeing. Jiro left to fix tea for Yuri and you. As you looked around, you saw medicine bottles. One of them had red colored pills. It reminded you of all the medication you were taking. They were for your mental health. Six different medications, you were off of them due to extreme reasons. 

As you were looking at these pills. You have begun to realize that you were okay. Maybe not fully mentally okay. Yet, you were seeing a therapist about it. You last half a year without those medicine. You thought about what each of them were for. 

“One to numb the hurt, two to ease the pain 

Three to clear your mind, forget all the hate 

Take as I advised, not more than prescribed 

Several weeks ahead, you’ll be fine again.” 

Which quickly changed to, 

“One to stop the chills, two to ease the pain 

Three to wash my guilt, forget all my shame 

Five could never hurt, six couldn’t be worse 

Seven days it been, here we go again.” 

After to close call you had back then. You switched doctor and left the medications behind. Life got a little easier after each session with your therapist. You still felt uneasy about using medicine again. But as Jiro enters the room again. You asked him for pen and paper. He hands it to you, and you began to write. You wrote out your struggles and hinted about the incident that took place. Once you have finished writing. You stood up quickly and kissed Jiro on the cheek. Thanking him as you walked out with the paper. Confused on what happened, he shrugged it off. Later in life, he walked the halls only to hear a few students talk about your new song. He hears one of the students play the song. 

“Six Pills hm?” 

Haku: Dirty Dishes by King Mala

When it comes to this man. He is a total flirt. Yet, he makes you feel so good. So, of course you wrote about him. This man gives you a reason to clean up. Not only your act, but literally your room. He gives you reasons to look forward the next day. As you both spend time together. You noticed him admitting he’s a little lazy. You took notes of that. Even took notes on how he treats you. How respectful he is. He calls you “princess/prince.” He’ll save you a seat. Hand over his jacket when you are cold. Checks up on you daily. 

The list goes on forever. So, there you are sitting on the bed. Writing all the lyrics down. You couldn’t wait to record this. This song was different than your usual type of music. It didn’t matter though. You were excited for this song. Once you have finished the song. You quickly recorded the song. It took a while for it to be published. But you knew it would be worth it. 

Meanwhile, your whole attitude changed since you came to Darkwick. At first you were anxious and scared. Now, you feel a little relax. That is all thanks to Haku. Your room was mess and so was the whole building. You used to use that as an excuse. Clothes on the floor, bed isn’t made, dishes in the sink and so on. When Haku started to come around more. You became self-conscious about your mess. The ones you’ve created, not the ones that were here already. So, then you began to clean around the place. 

“Got dirty dishes in my sink 

So many filthy memories 

I can’t even think, don’t got it figured out 

But you wanna come over now.” 

All the way to, 

“And it’s not me, but I wanna be 

A better version of you 

That’s why I’m tryna be cool 

But I’ve never seen a promise through.” 

You had made Haku promise that he wouldn’t listen to the song until you were next to him physically. So, he kept the promise to you. You both decided on a lunch date. He got the food and you brough the blanket and pillows to lay on. After you guys ate the food and chatted. He begged you to allow him to hear the new song. Giving him a smile and light laugh. You gave in and pulled up the song. Before pressing play, you told him it was about him. Haku raised a brow in curiosity. Then you played the song. 

“Won’t you please take it easy on me? 

Just go easy on me. (3x) 

As the song ends, you smiled at him nervously. He smiled and rubbed the top of your head. If only you knew that you to make him clean up his act too.

Creative Spotlight #8: Choi Jongho

Intro: With so many new Atinys coming in, I figured now would be a good time to shed some light on all the boys' creative solo projects over the years, big and small.

JongST

Jongho's a singer through and through, and launched his own cover series in 2020 where he traveled to the filming sets of his favorite dramas to cover the songs in his usual powerful and emotional fashion, proving over and over again how much he deserves all the praise he gets showered with:

The fourth episode is a special one, featuring Jung Seung Hwan, the original singer of the OST, and a little interview section in the second half of the video. It's very cute and Seung Hwan shares a little anecdote of Jongho approaching him in the past to give him one of their albums and being all sweet and shy about it.

The most recent JongST was released in 2022.

Other Cover Songs

In mid 2022, Jongho was invited to Leemujin Service, where he performed an acoustic cover of Turbulence and the most gut wrenching version of Don't Go Today (seriously, it's so gorgeous I've streamed it more than some actual comebacks):

Through his participation in Masked Singer, Jongho performed Swing Baby a year ago while (to my delight, Jinyoung and Hyunsuk from CIX were there) - it's a really fun and dynamic performance and you can tell the audience had a blast:

And while Ateez as a group have participated (and won) Immortal Songs on multiple occasions, Jongho also performed a solo there last year - So You. At the beginning of the last third of the song, there's a section where the instrumental just falls away and we're left with nothing but Jongho's voice and it's so damn powerful:

8 months ago, Jongho's cover of Park Hyo Shin's Wild Flower was uploaded, featuring Jongho in a unique setting: a circular room with a single spotlight shining down from above, illuminating just him and a pianist sitting at a grand black piano.

It's a stunning performance with a gorgeous explosive section in the second half:

Imitation Soundtrack

Like Seonghwa, Yunho, and San, Jongho was also a part of the Imitation cast but, unlike the other three, he was a member of the fictional group Shax, which most of us agree made better music in the show-verse. While they had multiple performances (all of them iconic), here are the two most famous ones:

About a year ago, Jongho performed his first OST live, Gravity for the show Reborn Rich - it's absolutely stunning and powerful with an explosive chorus and soft verses and I wish I could've heard it live when they were last on tour:

1 month ago, A Day was released for the show Lovely Runner which is, for now, his most recent OST release and (unlike Gravity), this song actually gets used well by the show and is played during many pivotal scenes (especially in the latter half of the show):

The great Dick Van Dyke, a television, stage and film legend, is 99 years old. Chris Martin and Coldplay honor this great performer with this new song, “All My Love.” 

Van Dyke has received various awards, including a Grammy Award, six Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award. In 1961 he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in Bye Bye Birdie. In 1964 he won a Grammy Award for Best Children's Album for Mary Poppins. Nominated for 10 Primetime Emmy Awards, Van Dyke received four awards for his work on The Dick Van Dyke Show and Van Dyke and Company.

In 1998, Van Dyke was honored by the Walt Disney Company with their Disney Legends award. He became the oldest living Disney Legend following the death of Glynis Johns. In 2013, Van Dyke received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. In 2021, he was honored with the Kennedy Center Honors, where he was given tribute by Julie Andrews, Steve Martin, Chita Rivera, Bryan Cranston, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Laura Osnes sang "Jolly Holiday", and Derek Hough performed "Step in Time" both from Mary Poppins (1964). Together Hough and Osnes performed "Put on a Happy Face" from Bye Bye Birdie. Aaron Tveit sang "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" with Pentatonix.

In 2024, at the age of 98, Van Dyke received the award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series at the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards for his performance on Days of Our Lives, becoming the oldest person to win a Daytime Emmy and the oldest to be nominated for one.
