Overanalyzing some chopsticks (spoilers for up to S1 E11 of Beastars)

obligatory cut for people who havent watched beastars (you totally should btw)

while i was watching the beastars anime there was a scene that really caught my attention, in episode 11, after saving haru from shishi gumi, and after haru makes sure legoshi isnt bleeding out, the two of them get yakisoba together, and there was a specific moment right here that really caught my attention

at the beginning of the conversation, legoshi immediately splits his chopsticks and starts eating, hes a hungry boy after all, he just beat a yakuza boss one on one, and he still does this with careful precision, splitting them nearly perfectly even.

haru doesnt immediately start eating, talking a bit and having a little inner monologue about how this moment could be her lifelong treasure (which becomes a reoccurring theme later on but thats for another time) before finally splitting her chopsticks, unevenly, this is a really good way to provide insight on both legoshi and haru, because you'd think it would be the other way around, the strong, imprecise carnivore, and the weak but graceful prey, and this serves as more evidence of legoshi's calm, reserved nature, and how he's used to spending every moment focusing on making himself look gentle, weak, a bystander in the world he lives in from being part of the stage crew in the drama club, to avoiding fights altogether, legoshi is aware of the default vibe his species gives off, meanwhile haru, who doesnt want to be seen as just a weak dwarf rabbit, and is trying to take her bullying in strides, isnt as careful.

Meet Harris Hoppetent, the circus' one and only magician

She doesnt actually know a thing about magic, or audience misdirection, or her left from her right, but at least she tries, and thats all that matters

Relation chart explanation:

Pomni: they bond over their whole "not knowing what's going on" thing, and pomni is easy to talk to

Ragatha: Harris thinks she's pretty, she gets a little nervous around ragatha

Jax: Jax is annoying, rude, and overall bothersome, but at least he's consistent about it

kinger: think's he's funny, genuinely interested in the bug collection (if it exists)

zooble: zooble actually helps harris understand how magic tricks work, and harris appreciates having someone around who's down to earth

gangle: their friendship actually had a rocky start, harris would trip on her ribbons a lot, but after that they got along, harris tries to cheer her up by trying to guess what she's gonna pull out of her hat next (and usually being awfully wrong)

bubble: they havent actually interacted that much, besides when harris pulls them out of her hat

caine: does anybody like this guy? he's loud, unpredictable, and borderline insane, harris doesnt trust him one bit, the adventures arent that bad though

Rhythm Doctor's tutorials are perfect and why subdivision beats are my favorite mechanic (SPOILERS FOR ACT 5)

before we get into spoilers: Rhythm doctor is a one button rhythm game where you apply defibrillation to numerous characters who each have their own tempo, mechanics and stories as to why they're at middle sea hospital, the game has a great story, amazing characters, and a simple (at first) gimmick, push the button on the 7th beat. its a good game, you should totally play it, and I recommend not reading this post if you haven't, if you have played it, then listen to me word vomit for a minute.

Act 5 is about subversion, even before the act officially starts the game tricks you into thinking it'll be a fun little baseball themed act

the entire act takes place in a new (to you) ward where you've overheard from two other patients that a popular baseball player has just been admitted there.

immediately you'll notice that this is not a ward in a hospital, this is a baseball field, strange, but whatever, doesn't matter. this song introduces a new gimmick, subdivision notes, which are a type of SVT beat (i realize i didn't explain those, basically you're given a get, set, go count and have to hit the beat on go) subdivision beats are simple (at first) where all you need to do is listen for a queue and hit more than one note.

they look like this (it was so hard to time snipping tool to get these). the top image is for a double subdivision and the bottom is for a triple subdivision the tutorial for these notes is really good at getting you used to these types of notes being matched with each other and regular notes respectively and you'll have a good grip on them by the end of it.

the song starts out in the same field that going into the physiotherapy ward brought you to, and the music is nice, mostly just a test to see if you have the subdivision beats down by now.

that is until you reach this point and a baseball suddenly flies into the screen, putting the song to a pause and pulling away the curtain.

it was a dream, this is lucky, the baseball player who was admitted to middlesea hospital for tearing their rotator cuff during a game. after a quick cutscene the song starts again, cutting back to the baseball field, except it's no longer a dream, it's a nightmare, its pouring rain, baseballs fall from the sky in larger and larger amounts, every now and then you can see the eyes of Lucky's fellow teammates staring at you from the dugout. and then it happens, my favorite part of act 5, the one queue that made me fall in love with this game for a third time.

FOUR! TONK-TONK-TONK-TONK

all of the sudden you're hit with a quadruple subdivision beat, they didn't teach you this, lightning strikes in the background as its called out, normally this would be bad game design, throwing something at you out of nowhere without explaining how you're supposed to deal with it. but you hit the notes anyway, because by now you've learned to ignore the visual cues and go based off of the game's rhythm, because the queue's "Tonks" are also in tempo with how quickly you have to hit the divided notes, so without making a sweat you hit the notes perfectly, even while the nightmare sequence starts to fall apart, telling lucky to wake up, you still hit every note perfectly until the end of the song

at the end of the song the screen zooms out from lucky, and you're shown the real physiotherapy ward, this room will no longer look like the baseball field unless you go to it on a new save, act 5 is such a good example of why this game is so dear to my heart (haha) and if you still somehow haven't played it, please, just buy it, give the developers your money.

So i recently decided to watch all of (currently up to S3 P1 as the time of posting) beastars

and, i have other things to say about it, but,

during this scene, the only thing i could think of was:

Been playing in stars and time recently and I just have to say that this game’s world building shows such careful, planned, effort, so much love was put into every single brick, the fact that with the information I’ve been given so far (only in act 3, no spoilers!), that I’ve been able to make connections that haven’t been pointed out yet, the importance of the country that vanished, picking apart the rules of the time loop, these beautifully written characters with so much history with each other that is mostly left as a mystery to the player, they feel so natural, they really feel like friends, the culture, religions, history, the fact that MASSIVE LORE DROPS just happen??? (Gonna start spoiling stuff)

You find a book about color theory, and the characters are like “what are colors lol” and you’re just supposed to accept that the game’s art style isn’t for the aesthetic, but a actual part of the world???? Not just that, but at one point there WAS color, but now there’s no color, and the world is actually just black and white, and they just move on like “huh ain’t that weird anyway let’s keep going” and there’s an entire COUNTRY that just.. vanished, and no one can remember what it was called, or anyone who lived there, like it was erased from the timeline of the entire universe, and whenever someone tries to remember anything about it they get a headache, and then you realize that there’s books written in a language that no one knows how to read… that makes their head hurt when they try to read it… and the main character can’t remember their family, and when they happen to remember a moment with their parents… they get a headache… and OH SHIT THE MAIN CHARACTER IS FROM THE MISSING COUNTRY AND THEIR ENTIRE FAMILY WAS POSSIBLY REMOVED FROM EXISTENCE AND WAIT THERES ALSO EVIDENCE THAT THE KING COULD BE FROM THE MISSING COUNTRY AND THATS WHY BOTH CHARACTERS HAVE A STAR MOTIF AND WHY SIFF SAYS “STARS” LIKE HOW ODILE SAYS “GEMS” AND THE OTHERS SAY “CHANGE” ALSO WHY ARE THE STARS SUCH A MYSTERIOUS CONCEPT TO THE OTHERS COULD THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF RESEARCH ON STARS AND THE SKY IN THE MISSING COUNTRY AND THAT WAS JUST LOST TO TIME AND EVERYONES MEMORY????? AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
