A Fair to Remember: why Sydney galleries head to New York and Hong Kong to sell their art
Tumblr media

Sending Australian artworks to New York or Hong Kong to be displayed for just a few days among thousands of other pieces is no easy feat, but for galleries Roslyn Oxley9 and Sullivan+Strumpf, the effort pays off.
Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery was the only Australian exhibitor at the recent Frieze New York, a prestigious trade fair showcasing 180 of the world's best contemporary art dealers. ''We were quite pleased for a first-time attendance at Frieze,'' Oxley said. Originating in London, where it has run for a decade, the Frieze art fair first came to New York last year. This year's event attracted some 45,000 visitors to Randall's Island Park.
Roslyn Oxley9 displayed works from artists David Noonan, Dale Frank, Tracey Moffatt, Tony Clark, Mikala Dwyer, Newell Harry and Hany Armanious, Australia's 2011 Venice Biennale artist.
Associate director Cassandra Bird said the Paddington gallery's lengthy and expensive journey to New York was ''definitely worthwhile'' because the gallery was able to expand its international collector base. ''We sold two-thirds of the booth,'' Bird said. ''We were also selling works in Sydney. People wanted to look at more, so we were showing them pictures of stock back home in the gallery on the iPad. We sold two pieces this way.''
Advertisement At the booth, Bird sold works to collectors from Colombia, South America and South Africa.
An untitled David Noonan screen-printed jute and linen collage was one of the pieces sold. Bird said some patrons recognised Noonan's work, but were unaware the London-based artist is Australian. ''It was great to expand our collector base and get our artists more exposure beyond Australia.''
Roslyn Oxley9 has long maintained an international art fair presence, starting in 1990 when it participated in Art Cologne. The gallery has consistently shown at two art fairs a year, regularly exhibiting at ARCO, Basel and the Armory Show in New York.
The gallery has participated in the Hong Kong Art Fair for the past three years, and will next exhibit at the first Art Basel in Hong Kong, which opens on Thursday.
Oxley said that while her gallery previously viewed Europe and New York as its main international platforms, this has now shifted towards Asia, and Hong Kong has become particularly relevant for Australia as a major art centre.
While 245 galleries will exhibit at Art Basel Hong Kong, just nine Australian galleries made the cut.
The only other Sydney gallery attending is Sullivan+Strumpf, which will show Penny Byrne's installation iPROTEST.
''Her work will suit an international audience as it speaks about issues across the world, not just one geographic location, or nationality. They are high in quality and extremely engaging,'' said Ursula Sullivan, who will travel to Hong Kong with Byrne and business partner Joanna Strumpf. ''For fairs to be successful, you must have the work that matches the expectations of very high-end collectors.''
Sullivan said the gallery is now doing from 40 to 50 per cent of its business with overseas collections, and art fairs are at present the best way to gain a larger and growing audience. ''Overseas art fairs are enormously important for us as they expand the relatively small Australian audience into a much larger one,'' Sullivan said.
''The whole thing is expensive - freight is expensive, the stand is expensive, and alterations to the stand are expensive. It's a high-risk kind of game, but if you find the right collectors, which we have in Hong Kong in the past, then it makes it incredibly worthwhile, because not only do you sell the work, you have an ongoing relationship with international collectors. Ultimately, if the fair is worthwhile, you'll pay to get there.''
Sullivan said collectors from New York, China and Europe purchased works she had taken to Hong Kong last year. Sullivan said the gallery would expand its presence at international art fairs because ''it's just where people who are capable of collecting in depth are''.
''Collecting in a major way is still a small thing for Australians,'' she said. ''It's not in the Australian culture to engage with contemporary art the same way it is when you go to New York or Europe, where there is a greater percentage of the population who is involved in contemporary art and enjoys it.''
Art Basel Hong Kong runs from May 23 to 26.

We are delighted to announce representation of Penny Byrne in Sydney + Berlin. Byrne's sculptural practice is politically charged, highly engaging and often disarmingly humorous. Using material such as vintage porcelain figurines and found objects, bronze and glass Byrne's work presents an ongoing inquiry into popular culture and international politics.
