i ended up doing patonic ranpo & yosano for this one bc i thought about ranpo having a scar from fukuchi stabbing him and then i spiraled. uhh once again sorry ik you aren't into bsd but i'm going insane over all of the bungou stray blorbos so have this <3

“You shouldn’t be so reckless,” Akiko chides, taking Ranpo’s hand in hers. Ranpo winces at the contact, but they know she won’t find any open wounds. The knife didn’t strike them—they knew it was coming and moved to evade it. But in the process, they’d crashed into Akiko and sent them both crashing to the ground.

At least the cops were competent enough to prevent the criminal from fleeing.

Ranpo huffs. “I’m fine,” they insist, though they allow Akiko to continue inspecting them, searching for injuries. There hasn’t yet been time for a bruise to form—though surely in an hour, Ranpo’s wrist will be black and blue—so the only thing visible right now is the matching thin, white, scars on both the palm and the back of their hand. Remnants from the battle against Fukuchi.

A physical reminder of where mindless trust gets you.

Akiko brushes her thumb over the scar on Ranpo’s palm, then curls their hand into a fist. “Can you bend your wrist for me?”

Ranpo obeys, bending it forward, then backward, then rolling it for good measure. It hurts, but the pain isn’t unbearable. Not when they still wake in the night, gasping for breath, their hand burning where Amenogozen pierced straight through it.

Akiko breathes out a sigh of relief, though her touch lingers. Ranpo wonders if their scar brings up unwanted reminders in her mind, too. Reminders that Fukuzawa is not infallible, that humanity is rotten at its core, that trust and love can be broken by anyone, if they find the right motivation. Or if they lose enough of themself.

“Please be careful,” she whispers, and then lets their hand slip from her grasp. Cold air seeps in where the warmth of her skin was only moments ago, and Ranpo stares down at their hand like it holds anything besides the ugly truths of reality.

“Whatever,” they mumble.

“I mean it. Not even you are untouchable, Ranpo. And I don’t want to lose you.”

Ranpo lifts their gaze to meet Akiko’s. Fukuchi’s betrayal taught them that love is thread as fragile as life itself. If the person Fukuzawa trusted above everyone else—above even Ranpo themself—could turn his back and tear down the Agency, there is no certainty the people Ranpo loves won’t do the same to him.

But…Akiko has already seen war. She faced the full brutality of it when she was only a child, and she did not lose the kindness in her heart. She spent years blaming herself for the blood of an entire regiment of soldiers, and she used her grief and guilt to make herself stronger.

Maybe betrayal is always a possibility; maybe you cannot love without that risk. Maybe you must simply choose who you are willing to chance such pain for.

Ranpo does not regret placing their trust in Fukuzawa, despite it leading them astray about Fukuchi. And if Akiko were to turn her back on them, Ranpo is certain they would forgive her even with their blood staining her hands.

Ranpo’s scars are a reminder of the pain trust can cause. But they are also proof that, even with an ability that elevates them above everyone else, they will still fall victim to their humanity.
