My Top 20 Favorite Matches - #6: Tay Conti and Anna Jay vs. Penelope Ford and The Bunny

We shall NEVER forget about Anna Jay, Tay Melo, Penelope Ford and The Bunny street fight match. And the fact that it was so brutal, that WWE called it “gory self-mutilation”.

We really as a society need to just fucking get over it and have the men and women wrestle each other. There can obviously be separate divisions and titles but thinking of how much potential for great storylines is being wasted physically hurts me. How great would mixed tag titles be (obviously we need women’s titles first)? For the first one they could have a big tournament and have all the couples compete and have the finals be on Valentines Day or some shit, it would be adorable. Who wouldn’t want to see Toni Storm and Juice Robinson team together? Or Britt Baker and Adam Cole, Anna Jay and Jack Perry, Penelope Ford and Kip Sabian, etc. I know I would.

Or they could have a blind eliminator tournament like they just did for the men, and pair up men and women who otherwise never would have spoken to each other. You never know, they could very well strike gold like they did with the MJF/Adam Cole pairing. I think they would.

Not to mention the great singles matches we could have, the feuds they could be put in. Plus you have someone like Kris Statlander who’s with the Best Friends and has such great chemistry with them but can never be part of the feuds they’re in if the other group doesn’t have a female member, and they can’t ever help her out in her feuds, it’s just dumb as fuck.

I think it could also help with the sub-par booking of the women’s division, too. They would get more time to shine. Obviously we need more matches with just women, but I would love more than anything to see those women kick the asses of some of those men. Those matches and storylines could be epic.

Anyway, sorry if that was messy or slightly incoherent I’m just really passionate about this particular issue and just heard that Rey Fenix wouldn’t be able to go to Wembley, prompting me to practically scream “so just let Stat join them for fucks sake!”

Edit: I wasn’t really clear in the post originally but I meant this this as strictly about AEW! I am aware that intergender wrestling does exist and has been done, I just meant that it should become the norm for the big companies (i.e. AEW. I don’t follow WWE so I can’t speak on what they’re doing over there. Someone that watches it regularly can speak on what they’re doing in this regard).

Hey, I finally finished putting this together! (its just tv stuff, i missed any twitter tweets)

I've supplied (brief) summaries, hyperlinks, and timestamps for each show, mostly to fite/triller where you can directly watch them if you have an AEW+ sub. The feud begins. The first match of the show is Best Friends vs FTR. Kip and Penelope are… playing… on an arcade cabinet in the arena. Trent accidentally destroys the cabinet while fighting FTR. Kip and Penelope to run off. After the match ends, they return with Miro who beats up Chuck and Trent. After a commercial break, Miro/Kip have a tag match (squash) against Lee Johnson/Sean Maluta and then do a promo about the broken arcade cabinet.

Miro scares them off and then defeats Trent with his submission hold. After the match, Miro puts Trent back into his Game Over submission and Chuck runs in to save him. Kip was following close behind. Chuck and Trent get both of their asses kicked. Orange attacks MKP and the two sides split off.

Over the course of 2022 you’ll occasionally see a guy in the crowd with a cardboard box on his head. That’s Kip Sabian, out of kayfabe he was dealing with recovering from a shoulder injury? It lasted a while and when he recovered he came back as a my chemical romance lookin’ dude who may or may not have thought the cardboard box was controlling him? The gimmick didn’t get over so it got dropped pretty fast. He also had a short feud again against Orange Cassidy in 2023 when Orange had the All-Atlantic Championship– he got under Orange’s skin so bad! Anyway thats neither here nor there. Summary: You and Jon go crazy when Renee is attacked backstage.

You had always been a calm and collected presence backstage, watching Jon tear through opponents with a fierce intensity. But when you saw the chaos unfold, your protective instincts surged to the forefront.

It was just another night in the AEW arena. Jon had just finished a brutal match, and you were waiting backstage, eager to celebrate the win. That's when you saw it happen.

Penelope Ford and Kip Sabian, seemingly in a fit of jealousy or rage, attacked your girlfriend. Renee was a backstage interviewer, not a wrestler, and it was unthinkable that they would target her in such a way.

You felt a surge of anger, like a lightning bolt coursing through your veins. Steam seemed to rise from your ears, and your vision narrowed to a tunnel, with fire in your eyes. In an instant, you were off your seat, rushing towards the scene with a fierce determination.

Jon, who had just reached the backstage area, saw the same shocking scene. He didn't even have time to remove his wrist tape before he was sprinting towards the attackers. The aura of violence that surrounded him was palpable, and it sent shivers down the spines of everyone in the vicinity.

As you and Jon reached Penelope and Kip, they turned to see a raging storm bearing down on them. The look in your eyes was enough to send chills down their spines.

Jon was the first to strike, launching a devastating clothesline that sent Kip sprawling across the concrete floor. You, however, targeted Penelope, using your rage and adrenaline to hit her with a perfectly executed spear that drove her to the ground.

Renee, though dazed, watched as you and Jon took control of the situation. Security rushed in to break up the brawl, but the message had been sent. Attacking Renee was an attack on the entire AEW family, and neither you nor Jon were about to let it go unpunished.

You and Jon stood there, panting, adrenaline still coursing through your veins, guarding Renee like fierce protectors. The message was clear: mess with one of your own, and you'd have to answer to both of you.

No write up or favorite tags this week because I am exhausted and I still need to set up a ton of polls because the queue is down to zero (plenty in my inbox aka the pre-queue!) and I'm headed out of town for a few days. The thing that really bums me out about Sonny Kiss non renewal is that TK thinks she has a lot of potential. And that they could be back if they get really hot elsewhere.

What was Dark/Elevation for then? Was it not a means to elevate and showcase your roster that doesn’t get opportunities compared to others? Was it not meant for additional story and depth?

Sonny Kiss was, and still is, “hot”. Her storyline with Joey was perfection. There was clearly thought put into it between both wrestlers and what production would assist with.

Sure after that arc Sonny’s ‘story’ had a rough patch but that didn’t diminish her in ring skill whatsoever. She got high praises no matter the match she was in wether singles, duos, trios.

Why does she have to get “hot elsewhere” for you to notice her when she was in your company, on your roster, in your contacts. CALL THEM.

When Jade formed the Baddies, had dedicated sections, signs, hashtags, and a fresh storyline to AEW guess who was one of the wrestlers they teased on social media about joining Jade, Velvet, and Kiera? Sonny Kiss.

There could have been something monumental in AEW’s women’s division with that. It should have went somewhere. Her peers were clearly supportive of the idea. They were clearly close in the locker room and on media, even took photoshoots in matching gear. The Baddies were at their peak then.

Jade and The Baddies could have come out with Sonny Kiss, supported her matches and vice versa. It would have all be done in good light.

Sonny Kiss was perfect on Ring of Honor.

Was I a fan of the faction name Trustbusters? No. But how many times has AEW swept a concept under the rug when things don’t work out? It could have been tossed and no one would bat an eye. Faction name aside, the group offered vastly different styles to the program.

Ring of Honor has way better booking in the women’s division compared to Dynamite and Collision, in my opinion. Production looks, feels, and sounds vastly different from those shows as well. Each women’s match has more time compared to what we are given on tv and even if it isn’t they definitely feel better utilized.

I think they should have and still could dive into mixed tags and intergender wrestling there.

Sonny could have wrestled Abadon. Jade Cardgill, Leila Grey, Red Velvet, Kiera Hogan (during or after the storyline of the inevitable split of the Baddies) Kris Statlander. Penelope Ford. Trish Adora. To name a few.

Take a chance on the women’s division. Dare to be different.

Show more interest in what could be.
