I drove past this so many times as a kid and have never once stopped, so to me it's more a kind of dream architecture than a real place. Apparently it originally housed an up-market restaurant and a sun deck, which I can't imagine getting much use as it's almost always drizzling or at least grey with clouds when I'm there. The architect was T.P. Bennett, whose postwar work included Stevenage and Crawley, neither of which are real places but only exist as train stations you occasionally whizz through on your way to or from somewhere else.

Gloves Early to Mid 1930s Leather, trimmed with leather and cotton thread and cord The fashion for gauntlet gloves, their extended flared wrists fitting neatly over the slim sleeves of coats, jackets and dresses, provided glove makers with ample opportunity for imaginative decoration in the later 1920s and the 1930s. These four examples, all but one part of a pair, show a preference for distinct, non-naturalistic motifs. The top pair, of green leather is embroidered with large cream tamboured spots, and the coral coloured pair is couched with black cord in a spiral and vermicelli design; both are stamped inside ‘Penberthy, Court Glover, Oxford Street’. The firm of Frederick Penberthy, whose shop was situated slightly to the east of Selfridges, was a long established and award winning supplier of gloves, hosiery and fans. Below them, the single sage green leather glove has an openwork design of looped black cord that emphasises its length, and is stamped ‘Gant Jay Grenoble’. The glove making industry of Grenoble, in south-eastern France, had its roots in the Middle Ages, and was at its height in the 18th and 19th Centuries when was a major employer in the area. It was here that medical student, Xavier Jouvin, devised influential methods of glove sizing and cutting patented in the 1830s, based on his study of the hands of local hospital patients. The cream leather pair at the bottom of the image is appliquéd with scarlet leather diamonds bordered with punched holes. The edges are oversewn with strips of scarlet leather which are also woven through a central band. The gloves have no maker’s identification.

Below, at the plant of the Windsor Tool and Die Company, employes raised the classification of their firm from "C" to "A" in the Fifth Victory Loan effort. Some of those responsible are shown, left to right: Mr. William Brenie, Mr. Fred Burrell, Mr. William Burdett, Mr. Armand Guidolin, employes who invested substantial amounts of their savings from $500 to $800, and Mr. E. B. Lane, president and general manager of the company. Fullest co-operation was shown between employes and management in the conduct of the drive. Linger Fickin’ Good
Over in the UK, there’s some hilarity over McDonald’s being forced to apologise over one of their bus stop adverts placements in Cornwall ...
Tumblr media
Have a McCrispy, after making your loved ones extra crispy at the Penmount Crematorium.
Of course, the real fault here lies with the advertisement horde company. When someone buys a block of bus shelter ads, they get a package of XYZ coverage with so much in urban, so much in rural, and so much in ‘middle of nowhere’. You don’t actually get to pick and choose exactly where the ads go.
Ergo, pretty obvious someone at the advertisement hording company was having a sick joke.
Tumblr media
And why not? It has the benefit of bringing to public notice the bad taste of Cornwall County Council buying up the old Penmount Hotel in nearby Newquay and turning it into the Penberthy Care Home (where people with dementia are dumped until they die) - but only after people started pointing out that calling it the Penmount Care Home initially was in pretty poor taste considering the name of the council crematorium.
And you really have to wonder at the sadism of the freaking genius who decided to set up some prep school for the next generation of upper class twits a mere 500 yards away from the council crematorium, on the prevailing side of the wind, thirty years after the crematorium was set up.
Imagine selling that one to prospective parents:
‘... and in our unique countryside location, on a warm summer’s day, little Tarquin will catch the subtle aromas of meadowsweet, wild rose, and the local peasants’ grannies on the council barbeque ...’
