They are not called Giant Tiger Prawn (Penaeus monodon) just in name as females can grow as large as 33 cm long. While it may be an invasive species in other parts of the world, here in Southeast Asia it is widely cultured for food. Mum cooked these Spicy Tiger Prawn with Onion and tomato for dinner. Next, she stir-fried Cauliflower & Abalone with Minced Pork to go with the steamed white rice.

lament for Daphne
is this freedom, Daphne? Apollo takes your body now for his own use—your leaves his crown, your timber his lyre-material. when you begged your father for escape, did you expect your feet to stick in the soil? deliverance not from, but to, as you are anchored to the earth ripe tor your pursuer's plucking. you are made a holy symbol of the man-god who drove you to this desperate transformation. even now you do not belong to yourself. is this the freedom you prayed for, Daphne? Eros and Apollo and Penaeus your father all playing their games at the cost of your life, and you now without eyes to weep over your fate; without leaves that can drop in protest. I will sit in your evergreen shade, Daphne, and sing the songs you can no longer remember.

Shrimp Farms of the Guayas Estuary
The Guayas River, which winds its way through southern Ecuador, has long been flanked by the mangrove forests and an intricate network of creeks and streams. Now shrimp farms line its edges as well.
The OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the Landsat 8 satellite captured this image of the Guayas Estuary—one of the largest estuarine ecosystems of South America—on August 29, 2024. Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city and the nation’s main port, is home to more than 3.1 million people. Rectangular shrimp ponds are visible to the south of the city on either side of the Guayas River amidst mangrove forests. The image on the right shows the estuary in false color to emphasize the difference between the shrimp ponds (dark blue) and the surrounding mangrove vegetation (shown in red).
To create shrimp farms, trees are cleared and swamps are converted into large holding ponds. Almost 60 percent of these ponds are located where mangroves used to be, explained Stuart Hamilton, a geographer at East Carolina University. Hamilton has documented the rise of aquaculture in Ecuador using 50 years of remote sensing data.
Starting in the mid-to-late 1970s, there was a rapid growth of aquaculture in southern Ecuador. Hamilton estimates that between 1985 and 2014, the area dedicated to shrimp farming in the Guayas estuary more than doubled—from 30,000 to 64,000 hectares (74,000 to 160,000 acres). During the same period, the extent of mangroves shrank by about 20,000 hectares.
Much of the mangrove loss occurred before 1995, and the rate of deforestation has slowed since then, Hamilton added. In an effort to protect the country’s remaining forest, the Ecuadorian government created the Socio Bosque program in 2008, which pays landowners—individuals or indigenous communities—to voluntarily commit to the conservation and protection of their forests, moors, and other native vegetation. A sister initiative known as Socio Manglar—“Mangrove Partners”—aims to protect more than half of Ecuador’s existing mangroves.
The farmed shrimp industry has grown rapidly in recent decades, producing less than 100,000 metric tons globally in 1980 but more than 5 million metric tons in 2023. That year, Ecuador produced about 1.5 million metric tons of Whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei), and was the world’s top supplier of the crustacean.

Jenis Udang Yang Umum Ditemukan Serta Manfaatnya
Udang Windu (Penaeus Monodon)
Udang yang biasa dijual di pasar ini memiliki ukuran besar dengan cangkang yang keras. Udang ini bisa dimasak dengan berbagai cara seperti digoreng, direbus, atau dicampur dalam berbagai masakan.
Udang Vannamei (Litopenaeus vannamei)
Udang Galah (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)
Udang Galah memiliki cangkang yang tipis dan tubuh yang cukup besar. Udang ini biasa diolah dengan cara direbus atau dijadikan bahan untuk sup atau hidangan udang bakar.

So.
I had a dream that I was at the bottom of the ocean because of some kind of whale-based Olympic event. It was fun and exciting and we visited the site of a whale-based Olympic event tragedy, and also we were in grave danger somehow.
Then I gave birth to a jumbo shrimp son that was named after the scientific name for the jumbo shrimp, which obviously I don't know so I never actually heard his name (I looked it up and based on what he looked like my shrimpson's name was apparently Penaeus monodon, but we called him Mortimer). I do think I squished him at some point crawling through the bowels of a submarine, but he was fine afterwards, so I guess it all worked out.
Somehow neither were nightmares. But! The important bit is, I never usually remember my dreams. Is healthier sleep happening here? Was my raging insomnia that has begun to resolve after leaving third shift preventing my brain from fully exploring its potential? Or have I just rewatched the whole Charlie the Unicorn series too often?
All of this to say that if this is what my unconscious brain is telling me, please know that every batshit thing I post is my fully conscious brain working entirely normally. Please do not be distressed. This is all 100% normal and average and I am also 100% normal and average.

Microorganisms, Vol. 12, Pages 608: Active Microbiota of Penaeus stylirostris Larvae: Partially Shaped via Vertical and Horizontal Transmissions and Larval Ontogeny
During their entire lifecycle, mariculture animals are farmed in water that contains various microorganisms with which they are in close associations. Microbial exchanges between the animals and their surrounding water can occur. However, little is known about the interactions between shrimp larvae and water, and more especially, about larval bacterial selection and microbiota modulation across ontogeny. To address this gap, using HiSeq sequencing targeting the V4 region of the 16S #rRNA molecule, we investigated the active prokaryotic diversity and structure of healthy Penaeus stylirostris larvae and seawater. Comparisons between different larval stages revealed evidence of stage-specific microbiotas and biomarkers, a core microbiota common to all stages, and shared taxa between successive stages, suggesting vertical transmission of bacterial taxa. Comparisons between stage-specific microbiotas and core microbiotas with water storages highlighted that many taxa associated with the larvae were originally present in the natural seawater, underlining horizontal transmission of bacteria from water to larvae. As some of these lineages became active at specific larval stages, we suggest that larvae were able to modulate their microbiota. This study provides insight into larvae-microbiota interactions at the larval stage scale. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2607/12/3/608?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
