Today's topic- the change in animation in LMK

I know like the majority of the Fandom has probably been sent to the ER after season 5 animation (or the emotion couldn't tell) but I think someone said that the animation slightly changed from like the Pilot to s 1-3, somewhere there, so like 3 different animation at this point, maybe??

Alright here's my thoughts

AGGAGAGAGGGGHHHHHHHH

Okay for real this time-

When I first watched LMK, I fell IN LOVE with the fluid motions, the active movement, the anime-style Influence, the exaggeration, the most random fun moments, pop ups, yse of environment, angles, camera movement, facial and body expression and other stuff I don't know the name of

Now as someone who's never watched Anime, please don't kill me, I don't exactly know what that looks like, but try going anywhere on the internet without tripping down the stairs and falling into the basement of ANIME

Also, I'm used to more rigid, beautiful backrounds, great lighting, or basic show animation. Such as Trollhunters, Amphibia, The Owl House, Big City Greens, Ninjago, How to Train your Dragon, Carmen Sandiego and others

So as you can see, this was new to me, and I fricken loved it

Now I can tell there definitely has been change from the Pilot to season 4, more refined, less sloppy

So, when season 5-

Oh dear, I love you Wild Brain, I really do, Ninjago and Carmen Sandiego WERE BEAUTIFUL

BUT AHHHHHH

I will say this, this is a new artstyle, they need practice, and I'm sure it'll improve, but this is not that time it's time to CRITISIZE GET THE RED PEN (maybe I am an English Teacher)

Remember what I said about what I love about LMK animation? Okay now throw it out the window into the Fire of FRICK THIS

Now I will say, they used some angles pretty well, such as using the environment to show emotion/tension, like when it would Pam out and something was blocking the two characters, from Wukong to Macaque to the poll in the Pagado and then a mountain between MK and Wukong near the end- look for its cool- someone pointed it out here on Tumblr can't remember name sorry

2nd, the expressions look really typical, like I miss the shot eyebrow from Wukong, or the the pathetic puppy eyes of MK, or the :3 for Mei, or the furious faces of Pigsy, the sparkly pure joy of Sandy, the chaotic gremlinness of MO, the evil Edit maker smiles of Macaque (I've seen your tiktoks) ALL THE LITTLE EXTRA THAT MADE THE EXPRESSIONS AND HUMOR/TENSION/EMOTION BETTER

3rd, the movements. Seen especially in the second episode when they escape. It's just, so basic running, like compare them running to MK's run in s2 running from the LBD and then when he ran in s4 away from the Ink scroll. Just so much more fear and dread. Also talking bout LBD, her voice actor? Phenomenal as always? Her movements and how they animate her? She seems more like a red headed doll with button eyes than the horror of something like FNAF(haven't played FNAF so can't really compare) what I'm saying is she seemed less huanting, a weary, fear-instilling, and bone-chilling(shut up let me pun) presence this time around, which really makes the scene less dramatic, but the camera angles, voice acting, and some animation still make it somewhat good.

Okay, this post is getting long and I can rant all day, and that's not even with me rewatching the show to pick it apart, someone probably already has good for them I'll look for it👍

In conclusion, comes of more dull, simple, rough, and rushed. S5 story, which has some problems, really hit deep in the last few episodes, mostly MK and Wukong, and if the studio beforehand continued animating, then I think it would have been a masterpiece, really sad to see the wasted potential

I know it's a new studio, but I wish they took more time to practice and learn, and maybe do it on a season that wasn't like the big reveal and end (I'd say a more happy season but let's be honest the Trauma train ain't stopping for a LONG TIME)

so, I guess I'll give it a 4/10, points for using the backround to storytell, still got some great angles, some funny bits here and there (the soldiers where a joy), action scenes were somewhat good, not a lot can't judge more, and pity points because I know they're still learning

Could you do some romantic Yandere Marcy Headcanons?

Okay so first off-thanks for the request! And second of all, i love her smm and yandere her would def make me question my life choices lol anyways….

Tw: Stalking, obsessive behaviours, overbearing behaviours, just regular yandere stuff….

Marcy would be clingy

Like not the clingy clingy the very overbearing one of your personal space type my girl would not know what personal space is 💀

Like let’s say you were going to give some letter to a teacher-

Marcy would offer to come with you! No saying no she very much insists

I can see her doing the basics like stealing your used pen, taking locks of your hair, etc stuff that you wouldn’t be too sad about

And if she did take stuff that would bother you she would play the hero character and give it back to you!

“Oh found your phone by the table s/o heh, you should really be more careful with your stuff!”

While i don’t think she’d have a big hero complex like Anne and Sasha due to her insane clumsiness she’d like the idea of it though, like yk those movies she probably watches with the dashing hero and there love interest, she would always tell you that and probably force you to watch the movies with her-

Speaking of her insane clumsiness i feel like that would stop you if you ever did from suspecting her stalking behaviour, because she’s Marcy Wu the clumsiest girl you’ve ever known since kindergarten!

But believe me she can stalk, in more different ways per say like if you had social media she’d probably be using her own account or an unknown account but to be fair she wouldn’t wanna creep you out!

So probably her own account to monitor you at best, no she’s not controlling you, she’s just watching over you! She has to make sure you don’t do anything stupid after all!

Overall, she’s be harmless before Amphibia of course…..

Now i wouldn’t say she’s Sashas level of manipulation but we have to remember she got her best friends stranded in Amphibia a pretty deadly world you could easily die in making one wrong move and did a pretty good job still lying about it

She’s more of a gaslighter type of manipulator maybe guilt trips you anyways back to her in Amphibia-

The first thing she wants in Amphibia other then the cool adventures is looking for you, and oh boy would she be training, she’s a ranger now she can protect you like she always wanted! Now it could go two ways

If you changed like she did and got more stronger, she wouldn’t know how to feel, sure she’d try to tell herself she’s happy but how’s she supposed to protect you if you don’t want her to? Maybe she has to be a little forceful but it’ll all work out in the end don’t worry! She’s sure you’ll be hers by the end

She’s sure of it……

But if you didn’t change and we’re still “weak” in her eyes, she would do anything in her power to protect you! It would honestly be how Anne saw her-

Now she’s not clumsy and can protect you at all costs, now that you are in Amphibia i feel like it’d be more easy to now see through her, since her clumsiness mostly made up for her being creepy and oh boy you wouldn’t like it

You’d notice how possessive she’d probably get again, she wouldn’t want to be forceful, but what if you die?! Especially since she is yk the reason your there, not like you need to know though, she feels like you would understand but what if Anne or Sasha talked you into it that what she did wasn’t okay?!

Her jealousy would show almost clearly when interacting with Sasha or Anne, especially Anne since she said it herself she was jealous of Anne especially with how likeable Anne can be……she’s just a clumsy nerd after all….

Would probably try to to impress you with her smartness and stuff 😭

Let’s say you were with Sasha and wartwood training, you didn’t know how to feel about Marcy as a what she did was messed up, but you end up coming to the conclusion on hearing her out, with the other girls there of course……

While you were doing this Marcy was being held captured ready for the core to be the new host for the body, what the core nor king Andries knew was that this was a girl with a certain strong obsession towards someone……

While the core isn’t obsessed as much as they try to stop it Marcy’s “love” for you ends up reaching Darcy who’s a smart manipulative psychopathic strategist……

Yeah

The first thing Darcy wants is for you to be found and be captured immediately

Sasha notices how different the bots are acting…..like they aren’t trying to attack her when they see her…..they seem to have eyes on you…..

Sasha thinks that King Andries is probably trying to capture you while she doesn’t know why she knows it has something to do with Marcy

I mean she’s kinda right

Anywayssss if Darcy does capture you your screwed, like very screwed

Your dealing with a smart obsessed mastermind who also happens to have the core hosting the mind therefore makes it Psychotic

Why don’t you just call “it” Darcy

With Darcy’s psychotic and obsessed personality it would be no lie Darcy would be forceful

“Heh! Oh “sweetie” you thought you could escape from me?! There will be no earth after we’re finished so why don’t you just be a cute thing and listen….”

I feel like King Andries would feel guilty and would always try to make it being captured by “Darcy” a little better by trying to tell Darcy letting you roam around the castle as it’s not like you can escape since the castle is in the air

Expect a very overbearing, forceful, clingy “girlfriend” i mean your practically hers at this point nobody could ever love you like she does!

Expect all those lovey dovey cheesy nicknames like “cupcake” “sweetie” yk the usual she’d say this while with the psychotic, most sinister look on her face it’d be kinda scary…..

Even when Anne does save the world and you four can all return safely not everyone is happy

Particularly a short blue haired girl

She still has to move, no matter how much she begs she wouldn’t care at that point she wasn’t losing you

Maybe she has to make a few lies to the new job application place you might say she couldn’t but she’s grown so much in Amphibia i think she’s sure she’s capable if it doesn’t work though logically she’ll maybe start with your parents then depends if there divorced or not, maybe convince them how cool the place is….and if none works

Overall Marcy i feel like would be a bit that obvious yandere although if you just look a little deeper you’ll realise how different she’d look…..

I feel like there’s more stuff she’d do but this is all i could come up with for now-

Wander fans are no doubt celebrating the show’s anniversary today on August 16th, the day The Picnic, the sneak peek episode (NOT THE FIRST EPISODE) premiered after Phineas and Ferb: Mission: Marvel.

Continuing my little story of Lord Hater’s attempt to change the highest higher ups’ minds, here’s what I put down…

(In the front yard of the Iger residence…)

COMMANDER PEEPERS: Sir, is this really—

(Lord Hater, still wearing his gloves and sneakers, is shown wearing blue jeans, a black shirt, and a light brown jacket. He’s also holding the mask resembling the head of Craig McCracken and a pair of glasses.)

LORD HATER: The best idea I ever had? You’d better believe it! Once I get Bob Iger to change his mind, it’ll be a cinch to get the bosses below him to follow suit. When that happens, they’ll get the real Craig on board after he’s done with his other cartoons and all the details pertaining to Season 3 will finally be revealed! Not only that, we’ll get to see what Star Forceps For The Pores actually look like!

COMMANDER PEEPERS: I still don’t know about this. What if he rejects all your requests? That book I read last year said that CEOs are the most unyielding people in the entertainment industry.

LORD HATER: Oh, quit your worrying, Peepers. If I can save the galaxy, I can save our show.

(As Hater makes his way to the entrance, he stretches the Craig McCracken mask over his head, and the only distinctive features shown are his green eyes, lightning bolts, and his lower teeth)

LORD HATER: (pulling off an impression of Craig McCracken) Hello, Mr. Iger, it is I, Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls, the Foster Home for Imaginary Friends, the Cosmic Kid, and Wander Over Yonder. You know, that one show about the orange hippie Muppet man I made for Disney in the early 2010s and left on a cliffhanger for seven years. I’m taking a little break from my work and I wanted to stop by for a hate-to-, er, heart-to-heart about my— Wander’s unfinished business. (normal voice) Okay, not bad for a practice run. Now for the real thing…

(Just as Hater’s about to ring the doorbell, a voice calls out to him)

BLOSSOM: Excuse us, Lord Hater, but what right do you have to impersonate our cartoonist?

BUBBLES: That’s not a very nice thing to do, unless it’s Halloween, which it isn’t!

BUTTERCUP: Yeah, and you know what happened to those three chumps when they dressed like us and framed us?

LORD HATER: Uh…

(cut back to Peepers as the PPG proceed to beat up Hater offscreen)

LORD HATER: HEY! OH! OOH! WHAT’S THE-! BIG I-! -DEA?-!

COMMANDER PEEPERS: (stunned) I did not see that coming. (sees SFEF, still covered in sheets, the one under the purple sheet holding a radio system resembling the PPG telephone) Star Force Enforcement Force? This was all your doing, wasn’t it?

(Let’s call her OFFICER TERROGATOR): The Mayor of Townsville isn’t the only one with access to Cartoon Network’s famous crimefighters. After all, both our shows were created by the same cartoonist.

(Let’s call him OFFICER CARCERATOR): We knew what Hater was up to, so we had to take action and give the Powerpuff Girls the intel. We were lucky they were already released from the CN vault for their revival.

(Let’s call him CHIEF MANIPULATOR): It is not up to him or Mr. McCracken to change the bosses’ minds, it is up to the fans. Persistence and politely penned protests are paramount for persuasion. (poking Peepers’s chest) As for you, little eyeball man, you had best keep this a secret or, Grop forbid, we will tell Disney to keep playing reruns of Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and every other overrated show for 10 more years at the expense of our show gaining more recognition and a proper conclusion.

COMMANDER PEEPERS: Y-y-y-yes, sir. If that doesn’t make you the threat worse than Dominator, I don’t know what does.

LORD HATER (offscreen): Hey, watch it! That’s my prosthetic arm!

Yes, folks, since there’s a vault for storing DTVA shows, there’s also a vault for storing Cartoon Network Studios’ shows. And yes, I intended to have Catherine Cavadini, Tara Strong, and E.G. Daily be the voices of the PPGs. Also, I wouldn’t worry about Hater - there were times when he was mercilessly pummeled and he got back up again (see The Buddies). This is a reminder to Wander fans that we must let Craig finish whatever he’s doing before Disney gives him permission to give WOY closure. Until then, keep reminding Disney of the show’s unfinished business.

Anyhow, happy 10th anniversary (to the sneak peek of an episode that comes third in proper order)!

This show really goes hard on the whole “set something up early in the episode and then payoff later”.

rubs my hands together. marcy facetiming anne and sasha to show them their new room post amphibia. 500+ go

The telltale intro to a popular donghua rings its beginning notes on Anne’s nightstand, and she lunges for the phone with an easy, practiced motion.

“Marbles!” she’s yelling, not even one second after picking up the call. “Hi! How are you doing? Are you settling in? How’s the new room? Is the traffic less intense over there?”

“Anna Banana!” Marcy’s shouting back, giggling. “Slow down! Sash isn’t even on the call yet! I’ll tell you guys everything, I promise, but you gotta relax!”

“You haven’t called in sooo long, Mar-Mar, ‘course I’m not gonna relax!” Anne retorts, sticking out her tongue at the camera. “Plus, you know Sasha likes hearing your ringtone music as much as he pretends not to know where it’s from, so he’s probably just letting it ring. I caught him watching an episode yesterday at lunch and he practically leaped off of the picnic bench to hide the evidence.”

Marcy giggles again and props their phone up on their desk so that their friends will have a better view of their room. “I just called you two last Friday, Annie. And it’s a good show, I don’t know what he’s so afraid of.”

Before Anne can reply, a noise sounds from both of their screens, and the split screen splits once more to fit Sasha into the frame. His face is lightly sweated out from his fencing class, but he’s smiling, making a kissy face at the camera.

“Hey nerds!” he greets, blowing kisses. Both of them blow some back. “Talking about me?”

“Oh yeah, just you and your hidden adoration for the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation franchise,” Anne teases, watching his face flush red.

“Well,” he sputters, “You’d like it too if you watched! Marce has great recommendations!”

“It’s on my watchlist,” Anne grins. “And they really do.”

“Aw, you guys,” Marcy swoons, placing a hand over their heart. “You’re too sweet to me! If you’re all free next week, what would you say to having a little watch party after our finals?”

“We’d love that,” Anne nods vehemently, and Sasha joins her in agreement.

“Marcy, you got me hooked on this franchise, I’m serious,” he says. “Literally what did they put in these characters? The soundtrack? The plot? The love story between the main leads? Oh my frog.”  

“Right?! I could write essays on— Hey, you guys are distracting me!” Marcy whines. “We’ve got a room tour on the agenda today, remember? You’re the ones who wanted to see it!”

Sasha sits up on his bed, placing his phone on his pillow and clapping his hands in enthusiasm. “Ooh, yeah! Show us, Mar-Mar! Please tell me you kept the duckling plush me and Anne got you for your 10th birthday, Mr. Quack is a childhood cornerstone.”

“He really put a dent in our shared allowances,” Anne snorts. “Totally worth it, though.”

“Who do you guys think I am?” Marcy says, swiveling the camera around so they can see the other side now. Smack in the middle of their green and ivory sheets and assortment of other stuffed animals sits Mr. Quack, far less fluffy than he used to be, but well-loved all the same. “Sometimes I think he takes up more space on this bed than I do.”

“And so the king reigns!” Sasha crows, setting the three of them off into another bout of laughter. “Long live Mr. Quack and his legacy!”

Marcy gasps, then: “Oh my frog, speaking of legacies—”

They turn the camera quickly to the other corner of their room, showing off the somehow perfectly organized mess on their desk, with multicoloured pens and open sketchbooks, as well as a drawing tablet hooked up to their computer. Tucked safely in the corner is a little model of Newtopia, with two statues propped outside.

“No way,” Anne gapes, squinting at the screen to get a better look. “You made mini models of Lady Olivia and General Yunan? They’re so tiny! How?!”

“Mars has the talent for it,” Sasha chimes in, also awestruck by the attention to detail. Everything is carved neatly into the clay, and both statuettes are adorned with matching necklaces, which Marcy had explained to them previously were their version of human wedding rings.

“Yeah,” Marcy smiles shyly, blushing. “I just wanted to honour them, y’know? They were so kind to me in Amphibia, and I didn’t really get to spend as much time with them as I wanted to, so I thought why not dedicate something to them here?”

“They’d love it,” Anne says. “They loved you, Marbles.”

“And so do we,” Sasha adds warmly. Suddenly, his eyes go wide, noticing something else in their room, and Anne shifts her attention to look too. “Hold up, is that your redecorated fandom merchandise shelf?”

Marcy grins, bouncing on their heels in excitement. “Oh, you two have a big storm coming.”

It feels like it’s been forever since they’ve been inside Marcy’s room. 

Strangely enough, nothing has really changed, much like how Anne’s room was left as it was ever since she disappeared. The same sense of organized chaos, chess trophies and science books and countless amounts of papers and notebooks still lie everywhere. Her essence is held in this space, securing her memory even if she’s not there.

Fortunately, this time around, she actually is. 

Anne and Sasha stand by the doorway as their friend takes everything in. She’s unusually silent, walking slowly across the hardwood floor. Her gait is still a little unsteady.

“Man... I’ve kinda missed this...” she whispers, one hand brushing over the frame of her bed, and when she turns around and realizes that the other two haven’t followed her in, she laughs. “C’mon guys! Come on in, no need to just stand there like that.” 

Anne and Sasha step in cautiously. The sense of nostalgia that carpets this place seems off-putting. 

However, with just a few quick sentences, they’re thrown into the loop again. Pieces fall into place, and soon, they’re all sitting on the floor and chatting. Marcy has a plush Sasha gave to her for her birthday years ago in her hands, and Sasha is leaning forward with interest as Marcy rambles about whatever topic suits her fancy. 

Meanwhile, Anne leans back against Marcy's dresser, and hears a small crunch. 

Sasha and Marcy are too engrossed in their conversation to notice Anne turning around. There, sticking out of one of the drawers, is a small pink piece of paper. It’s not unusual for Marcy to put things in strange places, but it feels oddly out of place. Marcy doesn’t usually bother with fancy letter paper. Maybe it’s something from school. 

Anne takes it, and opens it up. 

Dear Anne and Sasha

I know this is kind of ridiculous but

Anne, Sasha, would you like

It’s nearly unreadable with all the scribbled out lines and creases. Marcy wrote this in pen, in cursive- and Anne squints at the paper, trying her best to comprehend her words among the failed attempts. 

There, in a tiny corner of the paper:

Anne, Sasha, will you go to prom with me? 

It feels like the breath has been taken out from Anne’s lungs. She can’t do anything but stare at those words- and then the little else she could read underneath the mess starts to make sense. The realization hits her like a truck- Marcy was- Marcy was going to ask them out. Before Amphibia. 

Anne looks up from the paper at the aforementioned girl- still lost in her own little world, Sasha hanging onto her every word. Her eyes sparkle in the sunlight filtering through the window. The entire time- the entire time they had been in Amphibia, Marcy had had a crush on both of them. How did Anne not notice earlier? How did she not realize?

“Marcy?” She asks quietly, clutching the paper firmly in her hands. 

Marcy snaps out of her trance and looks to her. Years go by in an instant- for a second, Anne can see the person Marcy used to be, hiding in a grey hoodie, clumsy and dangerously spacey. It would have occurred to her that the glances and clinginess could have meant something else. 

And then she blinks, and the present Marcy, with hair that falls to her chin and circular scars etched into her arms, is staring at her- or rather, staring at the piece of paper in her hands. 

“Did you... did you want to go with us? To prom, I mean,” Anne asks, barely a whisper. “Back then.” 

Sasha gasps. “Wait- what?!” 

She reaches for the paper and Anne puts it inbetween the three of them instead, where everyone can see it, and watches Marcy.

She looks... scared. Her eyes flit between the paper, and anywhere else other than Anne and Sasha at a rapid pace. 

“I...” She laughs nervously, and runs a hand through her hair. It’s concerning how uneasy she looks. Anne and Sasha reach out to her at the same time, and instead of letting them assure her, she grabs the paper, crumbles it up, and throws it across the room.

Anne watches it fly over their heads. Evidently, there are still some truths Marcy wants to run away from. Sasha gets up and retrieves it anyhow. 

“Marcy, holy frog,” Sasha breathes as she reads the paper. Her face is split into a huge grin- not convining, or manipulative, just happy. “You should have told us!”

Marcy stares at her for a second, taking in her expression with such a disbelieving vulnerability that Anne gets the urge to suddenly wrap her in an embrace. 

“I... I was going to. That’s obvious- there are probably more attempts at writing a script around here, that I crumbled up and hid out of frustration. I really was planning to, but I got nervous- I thought that if I did ask you out, and you said no, you wouldn’t want to be friends with me anymore. And I couldn’t afford losing you guys because of my stupid feelings so-” 

“Hey, hey, hey, your feelings aren’t stupid,” Anne insists. She opens her arms for a hug as Sasha sits down next to Marcy and smooths the paper out on the floor once agin. “Come here.” 

Marcy accepts the hug with some hesitancy, but eventually sinks into Anne’s embrace and goes practically limp in her grasp. Sasha leans over to wrap herself around Marcy from behind, essentially encasing her in a best-friends-with-romantic-tension sandwich. 

Marcy’s breaths are slow and steady. It’s calming, to know that she’s alive. 

“...Do you guys...” she pauses, voice barely above a whisper. Her next words, she mumbles into Anne’s shoulder. “Would you guys have gone with me? If I actually had asked you.” 

“Are you asking what I think you’re asking?” Sasha teases. 

Anne’s own answer comes out without much thought. She doesn’t have to reflect on sunshine-encased memories and the heat gathered in her cheeks to know. 

“Of course. Why wouldn’t I?” 

She presses a small kiss to Marcy’s forehead. Marcy snaps up to look at her with wide, disbelieving eyes, and Anne breaks into a smile. Meanwhile, Sasha laughs and nods a yes into Marcy’s shoulder. 

Marcy finally lets herself hug back.

What program and brushes do you use when making your art?

@ravki hi! part of this is in my FAQ but i’ll say it again anyways LOL: I use photoshop CC and have used photoshop for pretty much....my whole art career. I’ve dabbled in clip and paint tool sai in the past but photoshop is my true wife, we eloped away from her awful father adobe many years ago and are very happy together. 

as for brushes... I should prob put this info in my FAQ too lol,... my default brush set is actually free to download here! Tho I will say I also use steve ahn’s storyboarding brush sometimes and lately i’ve been using shiyoon kim’s brushes A TON. Shiyoon’s cost a couple bucks but they’re super worth it imo

How do you choose colors?

This is kind of a difficult one to describe from scratch but hmm.... I’ll put it this way. Generally when I go into coloring or painting something I already have some colors in mind. Like for a certain piece I know I want a bright green, or a magenta, or a dark blue in certain areas. A lot of the time I know a mood I want. So I’ll start with that core color tone and build around it. I’ll use an example from a recent piece

So you can see here that the first color I accessed was that bright cyan. So I start with that bright cyan and then bring in its “friends” in the form of analogous colors (shown below on the far left)

greens greys etc. THEN I know I want the characters to stand out against all the blue so I start laying down warm contrasting colors for them (middle group). the mat under them is orange, skin tones are warm, ryans flannel is red etc. then to get them to work together I work more cool colors into the shadows and slightly warmer (not too warm because its a cool img overall so in this case, greener LOL) colors into highlights. 

hope that makes sense? for me choosing colors is a lot about story and composition. If you know what you want to say, the mood you want to create, where you want to go, the path to get there becomes a lot clearer imo.

Have you ever considered making an art book?

I have! But I don’t think I currently have enough...original illustrations for one LOL? Not that an art book has to be all original work but if I were putting fanart in an art book...at that point I’d just make a fanzine. I’m making more original work lately though so maybe this year....? Who knows. For now, I do have a sketchbook up on gumroad. Hoping to do one of those next year too.

Any tips for keeping background drawings from getting super stiff, especially since things like interiors have a lot of straight lines?

This is a really interesting ask. Really great question that I don’t think gets asked enough - forgive me if I get a bit art school here but I drew up some examples.

First I think we have to investigate the assumption that straight lines make things stiff. That seems true on an instinctual level and certainly proves to be true very often But I don’t think its actually the straight lines themselves but the sort of arrangements and compositions they tend to dictate. Take this for instance.

pretty big difference, right? there’s a couple things that make a composition feel stiff and one of the most significant is lines that are perpendicular and parallel to the frame. it feels locked in and solid, like bricks. but the moment you shift these angles even a little the composition instantly becomes more dynamic because our innate senses of weight, gravity, and directionality can sense movement.

But it’s not just diagonals let’s take this one step further

when lines meet and terminate together those tangents can flatten and lock space so the best way to solve this is with overlap and complete intersection, forms continuing past or behind each other feel more layered and less like a flat mosaic... again, even in the simplest line drawings. So how do we apply this to a background?

ok I drew this really fast so its potentially not the best example but I think the idea is there. This space isn’t even particularly deep, it’s basically a room, a doorway, and a hallway behind it, and we’re not seeing that much of any of those things LOL. but when you draw an environmental object like a doorway in a way that lines up with the perpendicular and parallel lines of the canvas you’re automatically flattening it and making it look rigid.

and when you create tangents with objects and characters you flatten the space around them and make it difficult to tell what is actually in front or behind or if they’re on the same plane.

GOD I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE. Anyways. avoid those things and you’ll instantly have less stiff bgs no matter what kind of bg you’re depicting.

I wanna mention however that this isn’t to say a stiff bg with flat space doesn’t have its purposes.

sometimes you want to create parallels and tangents. it can make characters feel closed in, trapped, regimented, part of a routine, etc. it’s also great for making a composition look ornamental (especially combined with symmetry).

directors like wes anderson can even use these compositional elements to make images feel uncanny or harrowing! its very versatile. I think the important thing is to just be aware of when you are making something rigid and when that’s the last thing you want to do. conscious choices.

Can you speak Tagalog?

@lemuelzero101​ I can! BUT NOT VERY WELL LOL ;;; both my parents are from Visayas! but they met and had me in the states lol so I’m pretty American born and raised. We go back to visit family on occasion but not regularly. My tagalog is mostly absorbed from listening to relatives at parties lol and my parents speak bisaya at home so I’m marginally better at that. Sorry to any filipinos out there hoping I’d be better educated, I’m like a little baby...

I do love meeting and talking to other filipinos online though, I grew up in an area that was relatively diverse but the asian population was small and the filipino population basically non-existent. I was like one of maybe 2 filipino kids in my highschool of 2000.

Apart from infinity train what shows are you watching now? Have you seen jujitsu kaisen?

Man this is gonna sound so boring but I haven’t watched a lot of tv lately.  It’s not really part of my daily routine. Let’s see... I was sort of watching Amphibia, Craig of the Creek, and the new Digimon Adventure 2020 but I keep falling off watching those for one reason or another. Also there’s a lot of episodes, it doesn’t feel like something I can just binge and be done with.

The last thing I binged was Succession. I want that show and Euphoria back so bad, when I’m done forcing all my friends to watch Infinity Train im cancelling my HBO subscription until Succession and Euphoria return so they know exactly what I’m on their list for LOL. 

I have not watched jujitsu kaisen but I’ve kept up with some of the sakuga news (I keep up with anime industry news and production info like x5 the amt i keep up with actual anime) for it and their compositing/editing looks dope. I’ve read the manga actually LOL or at least part of the beginning. I wasn’t super keen on the whole finger eating thing. Also to be honest I kinda feel like its the new Bleach and I never particularly cared about Bleach. Characters look nice enough tho. I wholeheartedly support jjk fans.

-In the first episode while they’re fighting the big mantis when Anne yells “do something!” Her eyes flare blue. I feel like that’s gonna come up later

I’m aware that I still have plenty of shows to watch after Amphibia. I still have The Owl House to watch as well as the upcoming episodes of Big City Greens and The Ghost and Molly McGee next month. Episodes of Bob’s Burgers and The Great North to watch. Even shows that aren’t Disney like Craig Of The Creek and many others. I can still revisit Amphibia. Still I can’t help but feel my heart strings tugged with how it ended. I didn’t even get that hung up on Regular Show and a main character actually died and stayed that way. We saw Anne die! We saw her body turn into leaves. Not to mention the whole existential question of Anne’s clone? I mean what if she wasn’t the one to die but her clone and we saw Anne’s clone die and not really her. Is she gonna bring this up to her friends and family? I mean Anne becoming a multiverse goddess once she dies of old age is not something to take lightly. Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy would freak out that their daughter actually died and came back to life. Though from the way she worded it Anne probably remembers the whole ordeal as some surreal dream. Won’t she be in for a huge surprise. While Anne giving Sprig her phone is heartwarming I can’t help but wonder if she had the chance to upload everything to the cloud and how her parents need to buy her a new phone. Also did they actually forget about Terri’s machine? I know the machine wasn’t powerful enough for a back and forth but at least it’s a way to contact Amphibia. Didn’t they at least consider becoming pen pals? I guess 10 years is a decent amount of timeskip. I wanted to see the Calamity Trio settle down and have kids but since they were in their early 20s it might be too soon for them. At least it allows for open interpretation. Sprig and Ivy settling off for that new continent that’s still uncharted territory is something I would see. I’m guessing the Core Moon’s destruction was responsible for it appearing. The only shame I could think of is Anne and Sprig not seeing the Mossman together and realizing she was right. I’m glad to have watched it from the very start. I have been with this show since the announcement and I’m glad to have stuck with it. The ending was beautiful and satisfactory. I just hope the same can be said for The Owl House.
