I am convinced that the more I reread the trilogy, the more down bad Katniss just seems. Like, look at this

Her mother literally just said "someone they love", talking about Gale, and despite that whole paragraph of her thoughts regarding her feeling for Gale, what she actually says in reply is "Where's Peeta". Making subconscious connections about love there, Katniss?

"You've seen how people are, when someone they love is in pain" (Gale literally injured on the table)

"Where's Peeta?"

And this is immediately after

"There's a long pause."

Like girl, hang up, tf?! You just listening to him breathe? Lol.

i think one of the reasons catching fire in particular is so superior to the mockingjays has to do with visual appeal. (and for some reason oscar winner jlaw having the most monotone expressions despite katniss' emotional inner monologue...) i get that it's supposed to represent war and tragedy, but use the colors on the squad themselves and in 13! it makes no sense for the capitol to be devoid of color!! the books point out specifically glittering buildings and pink and orange streets!!!

i love thg so much but there's a reason 99% of people have the same ranking for the movies despite mockingjay not being that bad of a film at all.

(and why tbsosas is gonna cement itself above mockingjay for most ppl)

She was so unserious sometimes, I swear. And she was so DOWN BAD for Peeta.

People don’t realize the hunger games franchise is actually funny. Like the movies make it all serious but in the books there’s literally a scene where a guy is giving another guy cpr and Katniss thought they were kissing and was literally like “weird timing but live your truth ig”

anyway its so bittersweet when someone creates a character thats so fascinating and flawed ... like i dont read much y/a because im a grown woman but at least when i WAS reading y/a..... NO ONE did it like katniss. none of the other y/a girlies even understood what she was doing well enough to TRY to do it. katniss was grimy and and rude and rough-edged but still so much a teenage girl that is so overly sensitive but the only way she understands how to express her anguish is to be angry and push people away or throw herself into danger. shes just so special. and peeta is like the useless girl in an anime thats always being rescued and loves to cook. THATS feminism.

Peeta's hijacking removed much of the idealism Peeta had but in a good way. He liked her since he was FIVE. The glasses were tinted AS FUCK. To Peeta's credit, he was very much mature about it, especially when he approached Katniss in CF saying he understood that the "romance act" was to save them. He loved openly but never forced her to reciprocate. But you can't help bringing your idealism into puberty just like how you take your traumas with you as you age. It's extreme but the hijacking gave him a different point of view on who Katniss is and what is real and what is not. Especially when their whole romance was confsuinto him to begin with.

At the same time, Katniss also learned how deep Peeta's love for her was, especially when it was "gone". She didn't handle it with too much grace but she felt that absence HARD. It was also beneficial for Katniss because maybe she felt like she owed him too much and that's where her feelings are stemming from.

The hijacking forced them to reassess their dynamic. The growing together was a redo of their relationship in their own terms.

Peeta still loves her just as purely and passionately as before. Even better, he got to do it in private, in peace. (And with lots of capitol grade therapy haha)

i really resent this idea of "i'm so sad that peeta will never love her how he used to!!!" i see flying around on tiktok/social media a lot

peeta's love for katniss never went away. it was always there but the hijacking had overtaken it. post-war, post-healing from his hijacking, peeta loves katniss just as much as he did before, if not more. it's a more adult love, a more committed love. to love someone, to see their best and their worst, to allow them to see your best and your worst, to go through significant changes and loss and terror and still choose each other every time? that is quite possibly the strongest form of love.

we know peeta comes back to himself, throughout the latter half of mockingjay. he fights hard to get himself back. his charm and kindness to others, the lamb stew he offers her, the moments he remembers, saving her from the mutts underground, trying to help when she's on fire, not allowing her to take the nightlock, planting primrose to help her the same way he gave her that bread all those years ago. that's all katniss's peeta.

of course he has moments, because like johanna said, they've all gone through the most awful of circumstances and changed, but by the end of mockinjay he's fully back, with all his love. there's no way katniss has children with him if there's any chance of danger, she wouldn't do that - so we know for sure that her peeta is there right beside her when she's ready. he finds his way back to her, and equally katniss finds her way back to him. they grow back together.

There are so many Everlark moment but there was just something about Katniss stroking Peeta's head in the capitol mission in Mockingjay...

His head by her feet. Her feeding him in the middle of the night, holding on to the lid so he doesn't hurt himself. Asking about the time he was tortured, assuring him she is still trying to protect him. Moving the hair out of his forehead which is probably a relief because his wrists are bloody in the handcuffs. How he froze but didn't withdraw and she kept going. And how he finally fell asleep because he felt safe enough around her.

Chills.

The ship names for the love triangle in THG are sooooo appropriate because you have:

G@leniss which is like, this ship is just about Gale. Katniss's desires, personality, values, characterization, etc. have to be cut out and/or minimized to give Gale his fantasy.

Everth0rne because this ship is forever and ever a thorn for everyone involved.

Then there's Everlark, which is poetic and beautiful, invoking a mythical bird of fate.

And Peeniss. Because Peeta is the only dick Katniss wants.

so happy to hear you also hate the romance in that book it Always felt so incredibly slimy even when i read it as a kid. i can understand the necessary appeal of romance in YA but i always felt like katniss' character was held back by her interactions with bread boy, she's a much more interesting study when put against other characters (her relationship with her family is... man. you also see her interact with other winners later on so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it).

that being said, I seriously haven't read these books in ages lol. any character/interaction/scene that stuck out to you? usually at this point people ask about rue, but I'm all ears for anything and everything.

for as much as I'm a #peeniss hater, this line was one of the best lines in the book for me:

the rest of the story did not successfully sell me on this being a worthy romance. but this line right here? that hits. it makes perfect sense why she would commit double suicide with him, even if I don't believe it when the story says she loves him. regardless of what their relationship is, he is a person she knows. and it would be horrifying if she had to live the rest of her life knowing that the only reason she stayed alive is because he died for her and she couldn't stop him. it doesn't matter who she is, or whether she even likes him. he is a kid she knows from her hometown and if they both live, they are going to have to deal with survivor's guilt forever. she doesn't want him to deal with that pain either.

the survivor's guilt would mean one of them would always be stuck in this moment. better to die and bring that moment to a close rather than let it stay an open wound for the rest of their lives, whichever one lives.

In a way, Gale's right. She picked someone she cannot survive without. And while Katniss viewed it as: which of them will sustain me, I think Gale got the bigger picture and knew it won't be him. Katniss has survived many times over without him.

Katniss appreciated Gale's partnership when it comes to efficiency and convenience. She was fine without him, but she recognized that he improved the hunting experience, both in collaboration and company. However, Katniss never expressed need regarding Gale, but she's equated survival with Peeta, many times over in several different ways. The bread, the dandelion, the hope, the nights at the train, the new hunger at the beach, not having the will to live when they were separated, suicide mission to the capitol when she thought he is gone, not taking her life in 12 because she was waiting for him.

She needs him because with him, she sees beyond survival. There is hope, there is beauty, there is life.

So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real."

Not to hijack your post with Everlark but she describes Peeta well and often. His blonde hair, his curls, his eyelashes, his eyes, his arms. More than just descriptions of him, Katniss also talks about how he makes her feel.

She talks about Peeta painting and how his hands move and how she is fascinated by them. She talks about his strong arms and how they made her feel safe for time since her father died.

But I'm glad you pointed out her obsession with food because she so often linked hunger with Peeta. Whether she's remembering how he saved her with the bread, or how kissing him made her feel a new type of hunger, or how he gave Peeta the rest of the food that she couldn't finish in the Capitol bc she doesn't want to waste it, or when Peeta remembered her favorite food was lamb stew.

Can't separate food from the boy with the bread.

Again rereading hunger games, Katniss is literally such a disaster as a narrator when you consider what she ‘catches on to’ and what she completely misses (and who can blame her) but I also realized - Katniss spends more time describing different types of food, particularly Capitol food, in intense detail, than she does either Gale or Peeta. Like ‘Peeta has blonde hair’ I can’t even remember her telling us his eye color, she does talk a bit about Gale’s lips but it pales in comparison to the detail she puts in to describe different food dishes, which, understandable and I love her for it.
