Here are seven great things we wrote about this week:

A rare thing happened with the Nobel Prizes for physics and chemistry: Women won them.

In certain Nobel Prize categories, men have been much, much more likely to win.

This week, at least two women broke that pattern. Donna Strickland, an associate professor of physics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, was the third woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 117 years. “It was just a fun thing to do, and so I enjoyed putting many hours into it,” Dr. Strickland said of her work with short-pulse lasers more than 30 years ago.

Frances H. Arnold, a professor of chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology, was the fifth woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for her work with the directed evolution of enzymes.

Professor Arnold said she was “absolutely thrilled.” Read more »

The wedding of two survivors helped reclaim a painful day in Las Vegas.

Exactly one year after Regina Harris and her fiancé, Billy Bob Mason, fled the concert where a gunman opened fire, they were getting married at a memorial for the victims, surrounded by other survivors.

At her wedding, Ms. Harris, to go with her dress, wore a pair of socks that read “bad ass.” Mr. Mason wore a purple vest and a black cowboy hat.

Hundreds of other survivors had come back for the memorial, where Sheriff Joe Lombardo of Clark County told them, “We’ve learned that we are not defined by our fears, but by our will to overcome them.” Read more »

Jellyfish may provide the ocean with food in tough times.

Jellyfish were once dismissed as a food source — after all, a cup of jellyfish yields just five calories, one-third the amount in a cup of celery — but scientists are discovering they may have an important place on the ocean menu.

Using new techniques to see what a predator consumes, researchers discovered that eels, albatrosses, penguins and others may consume jellyfish frequently.

Jellyfish are less vulnerable to population crashes than fish. That means other animals may survive lean times by eating them.

“That might bring stability to a food web,” said Jonathan D.R. Houghton, one of the marine biologists who worked on the study. “They could provide a buffer for the system.” Read more »

A 6-year-old spoke clearly for the first time.

Mason Motz, 6, had been unable to speak clearly, something his parents thought was the result of a brain aneurysm he had as a baby.

That changed when Dr. Amy Luedemann-Lazar, a pediatric dentist, was performing unrelated dental work and realized that Mason might be tongue-tied, a condition formally called ankyloglossia. She asked if she could untie his tongue with a laser. Mason’s parents agreed; the procedure took 10 seconds. They went home.

Meredith Motz, his mother, later heard him say: “I’m hungry. I’m thirsty. Can we watch a movie?”

“We’re sitting here thinking, ‘Did he just say that?’ ” Ms. Motz said.

Now, Mason is speaking at the level of a 4-year-old. He is expected to catch up with his peers by the time he is 13, his mother said. Read more »

A history-making astronaut was also a normal dad.

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. But to one boy who had to miss a Little League all-star game to watch his spaceship take off in 1969, he was just Dad (and the boy was a little bit peeved).

Rick Armstrong, the son, is now 61. He and his brother Mark, 55, are revisiting the legacy of their father before an auction of thousands of his belongings.

Even though astronauts were national celebrities in the 1960s, Rick recalled his life as “just normal growing up in the suburbs. It did not seem particularly extraordinary or anything.” Read more »

Two strangers helped a Navy veteran pay for his funeral.

When Willie Davis received a terminal cancer diagnosis, he decided he didn’t want his family to take on his funeral costs, and so he sold off his possessions to pay for it himself.

David Dunkleberger, 27, and Ed Sheets, 27, stopped by his yard sale in Western Pennsylvania to browse. Once Mr. Davis told them what was saving for, they couldn’t stop thinking about it. “The fact that he didn’t want to be a burden to anybody else — I just found that incredible,” Mr. Sheets said.

They set up a fund-raising account, which, after picking up steam in local news reports, exceeded $58,000. Mr. Davis said he plans to put the money not used for funeral costs toward starting a foundation to help other veterans. Read more »

Alaska Native women are reviving a tattooing tradition.

Grete Chythlook dreamed of the tattoo before she had ever seen one: a few lines from the bottom lip to the chin. When a friend asked her to accompany her to a tattooing session, and the design matched her vision, she sensed that something special was happening.

Line tattoos, traditionally inscribed on women by women to commemorate milestones, speak to a practice that dates back at least 10,000 years. The custom suffered during colonization, but Alaska Native women are bringing it back.

“This is something our people had done for thousands of years, and then all of a sudden, it’s just gone,” said Ms. Chythlook, who is Gwich’in. She considers her dreams of the tattoos “an ancestral memory, something telling me that this is where I was meant to be.” Read more »
