The next morning was a train wreck. I was rushing around to get water and food for the girls while they moaned and groaned about their hangovers.
“I know a good way to wake up without a hangover,” I tell them, joyfully eating my pancakes while watching them struggle through toast.
Jade perks up. “You? Really? Tell us,”
I lean in, and so do they, eager to hear my secret. “Don’t drink so much,” I whisper.
In synchrony, they roll their eyes, which makes me cackle.
“Well,” Anna says. “Not all of us can be as appealing to guys when we’re sober.” Her eyebrow raises, and I blush. I didn’t really expect her to remember Calum, and I am certainly trying to get on the wave of forgetting him as well.
“You’re both perfectly appealing to guys when you’re sober. Look at you, you’re beautiful and smart and spontaneous, what’s not to like?” Although I was genuine in my argument, I admit I’m only trying to get their minds off of Calum.
“Stop changing the subject, y/n, and tell us everything.”
I place my mug on the table, cupping it with my hands and watching the steam rise. Whatever Calum and I were feeling, I probably am overdramatizing in my head. So we walked around for a little and he pretended to be my boyfriend to save me from a slimy guy. And what? A lot of decent guys would do that. Just because he wanted to see me again, doesn’t mean he felt that connection I did.
“There’s nothing to tell.” is the response I settle for, and usually Anna and Jade wouldn’t be cool with that, but something keeps them quiet.
We’re silent for the rest of breakfast, but when we’re throwing our things away, Anna starts talking. “So tonight,”
“Don’t even finish that sentence.” I hold up a hand, only half joking. “No more partying for me.”
“It’s not a party, smart-ass.” She says, playfully swatting my hand away. “It’s a concert. A friend of mine got tickets, 3 front row tickets, and couldn’t go, so I bought them off of her. It’d be a waste if we didn’t go.”
“What kind of concert?” Jade asks, grabbing her coffee before we leave the cafe and head back to my dorm.
“I’m not sure. Pop, or rock, something pretty mainstream. I figure it’s a fair marriage between our scene and y/n’s, so why not?”
“No drinking?” I ask, still a little shaken up from yesterday’s encounter with beer.
“No drinking.” Anna answers.
“Sure.” There’s no better way to get your mind off of something than a concert, I guess. And if I get in my social life time this weekend, maybe they’ll leave me alone next weekend.
Anna and Jade spend the majority of the day sleeping off their hangovers while I watch Friends. They wake up about an hour and a half before we should get ready, and take turns showering while I clean my room. I showered this morning after we got back from breakfast, so I use the time to do something with my hair. I loosely braid it in the back, using a few sparkly red clips to clip back the shorter layers that didn’t make the braid. There was an outfit I was dying to wear, and I couldn’t think of a reason not to take advantage of this night out to wear it. Anna and Jade join me and we do our makeup, all 3 of us together. We blast some music while Jade explains her latest boy project. My face is almost done-- I’d applied a tinted moisturizer, a creamy blush, a tinted eyebrow gel-- and I’m applying my eyeliner and mascara when Anna announces she’s hungry.
She goes to see what food places are near the show, and I finish up my makeup, applying a red gloss to my lips.
Anna and Jade leave to go to their shared dorm so they can pick out their own clothing, and as much as I don’t want to admit it, I’m happy for the peace and quiet. I love them, but they talk quite a bit. I turn off the music, putting my phone in the charger and moving over to my closet. After pulling on a pair of high-waisted, frayed black shorts and a slightly darker black short sleeved shirt that I tuck into the shirts, I decide on a chunky, shiny, red leather belt and black Docs with red laces.
I’m no fashion queen, nor am I some grunge goddess, but I’m certainly proud of this outfit. My best feature is my legs and the boots with the shorts make them look even more amazing. Just saying.
I grab my bag, put in everything, and go find the girls. They’re ready, so we get in the car, Anna in the driver’s seat.
“That BELT!” Anna whoops, and I smile proudly.
“You guys look great too!” I say, returning the compliment. Anna turns up the music, but Jade, still recovering from her hangover, shuts it off.
I ask them to drop me off at the concert before they eat since I already got food. Not many people are there, so it’s easy to get in and take my spot. After spending some time wandering around and looking at merch, I return to my place, finding Anna and JAde there as well.
“You look much better,” I say to Jade.
“Wow, thanks! Did I not look good before?”
“Whatever, you know what I mean,” There’s a shit eating grin on her face, and I laugh, swatting her playfully. The concert is starting, which means we can hardly hear each other over the screams from the crowd and the strumming coming from the background. The band walks out one by one. the fans screaming their names as they walk out. They’re young, attractive, and I’m having a fun time watching them until my system receives a large shock when I see a familiar body and face come into view.
“Oh. My. God.”
The words that leave Jade’s mouth basically sum up everything I’m feeling, and my heart quickens.
“Maybe we should go?” Anna says, placing a hand on my lower back. But as soon as she does, Calum and I lock eyes, and the shock I am experiencing is mirrored in his face.
“No, we might as well stay, but we have to leave as soon as it’s over.”
Jade gives me a sympathetic smile, and I shrug off their concern. It’s not a big deal. So he’s some guy I met at a party, and what? That’s it.
And they play good music! One or two of the songs, I’ve heard on the radio, and before I know it I forget he’s up there and join in dancing with my two best friends in the whole world.
But when the last song dies, my heart sinks into my stomach. We try getting out quickly, but as we’re trapped in the front it isn’t easy. So it’s only natural that, on my way near the backstage to find a bathroom to hide in, I run into Calum.
“Hey, Calum.” I say, defeated.
“Hello, Cinderella.”
I give him a confused look.
“No number, no information past your first name, and running away in the night. Granted, it’s a much more modern version considering you left to catch an Uber to put your drunk friends into, but the similarity is striking, don’t you think?”
I don’t answer, looking to the side instead. I’m too scared to look him right in the eye and feel that zap again.
“Y/n. Just tell me you felt it too.”
My eyes immediately lock with his searching ones, confused. I thought it was on my end only, but I feel it again, this time a little calmer.
“Feel what?” I say, testing him.
“That.” He says back.
My heart jumps a little, and I sigh, not knowing what to do. I want to pursue this, but I don’t know how to get rid of the fear.
“This isn’t easy for me, you know.” I say. “And I don’t know you at all.”
“Well help me help you know me.”
We stand there and look at each other for a minute, and I look back at everything I’ve gone through, the heartbreak I’ve endured, and I realize that if I don’t take this chance I’ll regret it forever.
“Will you call me?” I ask, hesitantly. He hands me his phone, and I type in my number and name. I even put in my last name, to show him I’m not messing with him.
When I hand it back, my hands are shaking, and we hold the phone between us for a beat too long, our fingers touching.
“I have to go.” I say, and he nods.
I have to go, but this time I’ll be back.
