he’s in dire need of a distraction seeing how this evening has turned out to be everything but what he has anticipated. the mere idea of a pool of invited journalists writing up news articles in their heads as the serum was presented to the world is enough to put zayid off the desire to step into his office for the next fifteen weeks—he can’t even imagine the sheer level of chaos that the marketing department must be currently suffering from.

in the silence that pervades the garden, a hushed noise captures his attention. zayid tears his pensive gaze away from the water show presented by the fountains, only to come face to face with an all too familiar face. “crowd got to you?” he questions idly with a hand thrown over his shoulder, thumb pointing into the direction of the gala while a wry grin traces his features. “i’m better company anyway.”

the atmosphere is still uncomfortable, to say the least. not that he’d expected their run-in at the bathroom to reach any sensible conclusion, of course; their friendship, like many other things he’s ruined in the past, has been fractured to a point where he does not even know how to start mending it. but it doesn’t change the fact that he still wants only the best for jax. 

it’s why they’re sitting in his apartment together now, two cups of coffee between them and a half-finished weapon on the desk. 

“here. see how it feels in your hand.” isaac insists, holding it up for his not-quite friend. “there should be a switch there under your index finger and it should create something like a — call it a temporary electric field of sorts. that’s what i’m trying to go for right now, anyway.”

he’d been prepared for this, and he’d told himself that this was just a part of his job - to show up, smile, talk about how great it is to work at kronos and applaud after whatever speech robert buchanan gives. but it is, he will admit, exhausting to be reminded that this is still an uphill battle, and one he has to endure alone. 

which is more or less why he finds himself in the overly fancy black-and-gold bathroom, splashing water on his face to sober up. ( the tequila shot, he will admit, was overkill. ) and with so many faces from his past coming to haunt him today, what was another one? even the footsteps sound familiar - and when he actually lifts his head up to come face to face with jax, he greets the other with a small laugh.

“you’re still around. that’s good.” he says, grabbing a new hand towel from the basket nearby. “and don’t worry. i was just heading out. this -- god-awful vanilla scented bathroom is all yours.”
