Interaction with Industry Experts along with Training & Placement Officers from Gujrat’s top-most engineering colleges in Ahmedabad for Best Practices in Academia with a view to improve Campus Placements

 Inputs  taken from E+L were how to motivate, orient & train the students towards  core industry jobs by skill development programmes, industry internships,  invitation of resource persons, industry visit etc. The Managing Director  (MD) Mr. Sesadri Rajaram stressed on the need for students to be more  focused, quickly learn & able to adapt to current situations & have  flexible approach. His advice to our students was for any core industry job,  subject domain knowledge was of utmost importance while equally important was  the application part of that knowledge in solving engineering problems. The  full-day visit concluded on 24th April 2019 with the MD suggesting  students opting for core industry jobs should appear for GATE examination to  sharpen their technical skills.

 25th & 26th April 2019  were spent at SAL College of Engineering & Research & Silver Oak  College of Engineering & Technology, both top engineering colleges of  Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Meeting both Training & Placement Officers (TPO)  brought out common points. They briefed on the best practices which were  followed in their respective institutes for the purpose of student training  & placements. Both institutes stressed on industrial internships,  industrial visits, invitations to resource persons from industry for guest  lectures, update of latest / current industrial trends, technologies &  processes. Both TPOs also stressed on developing right level of soft skills  in written & oral form which were extremely important for the last round  (HR) of any interview.

I was welcomed by Mr. S. C. Joshi, Manager (HR) & Mr. S. Rajaram, Managing Director (MD) who after a brief introduction about company profile, guided me towards Electronics Engineering Division & the Testing & Assembly Section of the plant. In the Electronics Engineering Division, I came face-to-face with almost every aspect of what curriculum offered – right from electronic devices, components, PCBs to load cells, sensors, transducers, electrical AC & DC motors with their speed control techniques; it offered me a chance to actually bridge the gap between text-book level knowledge & practical applications. Here I was briefed about the use & applications of electronics engineering to their products & services. In the Testing & Assembly Section, I was shown the general assembly of industrial automation controllers & programmable logic controllers (PLC) with their applications. I was also shown the placement & calibration of various sensors & transducers for web guiding systems & web tension monitoring systems. The factory visited ended with a break for a delicious lunch sponsored by E+L.

 Taking out time from his busy schedule, the MD of E+L (India) Mr. S. Rajaram addressed me to advise students on the importance of personal & professional ethics, communication and code of conduct, discipline & teamwork for working in any industrial organization. He stressed on the importance of life-long learning whenever any person gets the chance to do so. His message to the future generation of engineers was clear – they should give in their best whenever they get a chance to do so. He mentioned that success doesn’t come as free lunch but one must work hard & be the best in whatever they do.
