Another series of coughs rips through Ellie's throat, nearly knocking her out of bed. She leans over the edge and heaves like she's about to let out everything she's eaten in the past twenty-four hours. It sounds like she has a rattle stuck in her chest; her breath is all wheezy and loud like an old engine, and it makes Joel's blood run cold. It's like her lungs are filled with fluid. If this is pneumonia, they are fucked. ---------- The morning Ellie is supposed to head out with Tommy, she gets sick.

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

I got deep into researching knife throwing for a very short scene in in search of some hope because I wanted Tommy and Ellie to bond over knives.

I also know nothing about pregnancy and babies so when I write Odesta I am constantly googling like “when do babies get teeth” or “babies talk full sentences when” and my google algorithm is probably permanently messed up from that.

I know A-phobes exist but I avoid them because I'm surprisingly not into reading people's hot takes about how unworthy I am. But damn. It's a good thing that homeless shelters don't value people based on their placement in the oppression Olympics the way that A-phobes do on Tumblr. If they're at a shelter they needed a bed. None of anyone's fucking business why.

The sad thing is, as true as it is that everyone deserves a bed, who gets into what shelters is honestly a really artificial and insane process and a lot of people get way less than that.

Like, from what I’ve absorbed in my time in front-line work my area has a definite hierarchy of emergency shelters for adults. At the bottom are shelters within walking distance of a soup kitchen where you have to line up every night before a certain time to get a bed, and that bed is a mat on the floor in a gymnasium full of people where you hope nobody robs you while you sleep. Above that you have domestic violence shelters that are cleaner, safer, and more stable--they admit you for a 21-day stay, give you a room with a door that locks, and let you store food in their fridge as well as providing cooked meals. In some rare cases, you might get funded to stay in a hotel room and given a stipend for food, with practically the total splendour of a person who isn’t reliant on somebody else for their housing needs.

In reality, there are a lot of people who are chronically homeless and used to emergency housing that makes them feel unsafe and unstable, who sometimes experience it as a bit of a bonus if, for once, the cause of their re-entry into homelessness isn’t a gang moving in next door or a landlord demanding late rent, but an abusive partner. Because that kind of violence counts “more” than just getting beaten up or thrown out on the street, so it qualifies them for more help.

Which is to say: The social support net needs more resources overall, and pretty much everyone needs more help than they’re currently getting. And arguments like “That person doesn’t deserve charity for a basic necessity of life as much as that other person” genuinely are fighting over crumbs while the people on top of society swallow the cake whole.

I’m honestly surprised he didn’t just explode with rage when Infinity War came out but after seeing Endgame I’m surprised he didn’t immediately shuck this mortal coil from sheer anger.

Okay, this is hard because, while I don't hate myself, I think I'm really average.

BUT! @wolfromate asked so wolfromate gets.

1. I'm loyal.

Hufflepuff all the way, man. I'm not blindly loyal. I don't support people who have become nasty because I've alway done it before. I'm loyal through adversity, boring times, trying times, when the relationship is hard and take more work than you want it to and it's no fun. Doesn't matter. You've got me. I'm here for you.

2. I'm a protector.

Not "I will watched over you" in a condescending manner. But "If you ever need help, no matter how scary the danger you're facing, I will jump in, teeth out." Men bothering drunk girls? Mean girls humiliating a non-toxic man? Karen harassing children? Homophobia? Ableism? Capitalist exploitation glorification? Doesn't matter if you're tall, stacked, scary looking, in number, my boss or rich. I will not stand for attack or injustice. We leave no one behind.

3. I'm a peacemaker.

Or I try. I try my best to be a good person, descalate agitate conversations or toxic gossips. I'm trying to see all sides. I'm trying not to say bad things about people who aren't there to defend themselves. I'm trying to get people to see other people point of view so they won't get into a fight, grudge, resentment and passive-aggressive emotional violence. Or, you know, actual violence. Kind of goes with quality number 2 but the rule shall always be "A good fight is one that didn't happen."

3. I'm kind?

Or people say I am. Thoughtful, I think. But I have strangers leaving me notes to thank me for my kindness before on more than half a dozens separate occasions so I will take their words for it. It always nearly bring me to tears, this emotional human contact. This togetherness we experience when we help someone go through adversity... I've got no words for it. I kept all the notes. And my parents texts about how proud they are for having such a kind girl.

4. I'm determined.

No matter how tall the gate or how heavy the scroll, if I've decided I'm gonna do something, I will. It may take me years. It may make cry in the toilet during the day, sob at night in my pillow from exhaustion. It may seems impossible. But if I've decide to do it, it's not over until the end bell rings. And sometimes, not even then.

5. I'm aware of how much further I've got to go.

I hate the overachiever who are always trying to make you feel bad about "why aren't you trying to be the 'best you' that you can be?" while being smugly satisfied that they are because they work all the time for promotion/eat vegetables and grains while working out 4 hours a day everydays/go to all the events, all the rallies, have a million friends on a million of pictures.

I'm not the best me. I'm not perfect. It's not making me cries at night in dejection. But I don't not care either. I forgot sometimes. But most of days, most of the day, I'm trying to be a good person. To not jump at people's throats because I'm in a bad mood. To not explose in anger when someone say or do something I think is fundamentally wrong. I tries to always remember I'm not the smartest one around. I don't know everything. I'm privileged just because of how I was born and raised, so my point of view is a very specific product of those circumstances. My culture is not always the right one. Neither is my point of view. There are tonnes of things I don't know. There are tonnes of people smarter than I am. I don't always know the background of a fight or what's going in someone's life, in their past. I try to always remember: do not make yourself smaller than you are. Do not step on any podium. There are always more to learn. Kinder way to be. More intelligent way to be. Wiser way to be. And do.

I think what helps support what you both mention is the type of places Solo stole from.

As far we know, Solo didn’t steal from public museums.

So I think the places Solo stole from says something about his choice in targets:

A bank for the “elite” in Florence, Italy

A stately home in Yorkshire, England

A lockbox (presumably in Germany)

Each of these locations requires research to know that there are even specific treasures within them. Which makes me wonder where he got his information. Perhaps as he was living in European high society, and as he attended galas, he met potential marks, saw their art collections, their jewelry, etc., and knew exactly who he was going to steal from. Or perhaps he met poor individuals who lost everything, perhaps they were lowly staff for those galas and they saw their heritage on the wall of some rich individual’s mansion. And these poor individuals really wanted that part of their heritage back but had no way of doing so, but Solo caught word of it. Even the Monuments Men had limitation in what art they could get back, but a thief? A thief doesn’t have to play by the rules. So remembering the other side to his duality, remembering what his signet ring represented, how he came from a lowly janitor, and how he witnessed individuals culture was being taken away from them by wealthy and pompous individuals, that he was going to do something about it. Taking a page from my favorite TV show Leverage, maybe he stole the art back for them. Could he have used the blackmarket to get the art back to the rightful owners without the previous possessors of the art knowing/tracing it back? I don’t know—that would be interesting—but I don’t know enough about the black market to say that’s how it works.

Either way, in the eyes of the law, he was stealing. And he was still moving items and making a profit through the blackmarket, so task forces are going to be put together to stop him. But the idea that he stole from the rich to give back to the poor appeals to me, and makes sense because of his signet ring. Yes, he has a signet ring because it’s what people of class wear, but it possess the face of Janus, which the word janitor is derived. Is it ironic that someone of “class” like Solo, would steal to give back to the lowly, the poor, the disadvantaged, the janitors even, of the world?

Perhaps that’s why his lover betrayed him? He was becoming too Robin Hood-esque for her liking? It’s hard to say, but I like the headcanon and I love Solo.
