Nagpur: Three people, including two minors, were arrested on Sunday morning for torturing a monkey to death in Kurha village, about 25km away from Risod town in Washim district. The crime came to light after disturbing videos surfaced on social media. In one of the footages, one of the accused is seen beating the animal with a stick. With each hit, the monkey writhes and screams in pain, while the tormentor shouts at it to remain quiet. In another video, he is seen thrashing the severely injured animal — tied upside down on a tree branch — with abelt and a shoe. The videos were reportedly circulated two days ago by a local reporter, prompting forest officials to trace the accused, who were absconding until Saturday. With the help of cops, foresters finally managed to track them down and the three were arrested. During questioning, the main accused Pawan Bangar — who was seen in the video — reportedly confessed to have killed the monkey because it had entered his farm. “Upon spotting the animal at his farm, Bangar got infuriated and thrashed it severely. When it was unable to move, he hung it upside down on a tree and continued beating it, till the animal died,” said Ashok Wayal, assistant conservator of forests, Washim. On Monday, Bangar was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Risod, which sent him on forest custody remand till December 22. The two minors were produced before the president of Bal Nyay Mandal and a decision on them was yet to be taken till last reports came in. “The action was taken under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972,” said Wayal. The brutality has enraged animal activists, who have demanded strict action against the accused.
