Appendix: Marvel New Universe Imprint:
To celebrate Marvel's 25th anniversary, then Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter had hoped to create a new seperate comic universe, with a more realistic world, less fantastic heroes, with a month time passing between each issue, and utilizing top tallent. However, money and internal politics hampered it before it even started and it quickly became an in- house project and half of the first titles cancelled within the first year. The whole line finally folded within three years.

here's my very nice very good goncharov remake cast
(don't worry there's no harry styles contamination on this one. you are safe)
aaron paul as goncharov
steven yeun as andrey daddano
patina miller as katya goncharova
anya chalotra as sofia ambrosini
brian michael smith as valery michailov
dan domenech or jason mantzoukas as joseph "ice pick joe" morelli
kumail nanjiani as mario ambrosini
(and to be honest, i think aaron or steven could both play goncharov and andrey just as well as the other one could, but i think steven yeun would look better in an eyepatch)

In light of all the renewed interest about Martin Scorsese’s long-overlooked “Goncharov” (1973), has anyone noticed the element which repeats in his later and much better known film “Taxi Driver” (1976)?
It’s The Gun As Protagonist Accessory.
In “Goncharov” it’s right there on the poster, held by Robert de Niro: that’s a Thompson M1921 with 50-round drum magazine, the classic gangster gun, the Chicago Typewriter, the gun that made the Twenties roar.
This weapon has appeared in many gangster movies, most famously in the original “Scarface” (1932) where Tony Camonte (Paul Muni), encounters one for the first time when it’s used in a murder attempt against him and all but falls in love with the thing.
“When this gives orders, people listen!”
In “Taxi Driver” it’s an enormous revolver, a Smith & Wesson M29 similar to the one carried by Dirty Harry, though here made even more imposing with an 8” barrel (Harry’s was only 6”). Scorsese is making a visual comment about the way his anti-hero Travis Bickle (Robert de Niro again) compensates for perceived inadequacy.
I’m not making any observations about trigger discipline. Really. No. I’m not.
Anyway, if Bickle could be associated with the clock motif in “Goncharov” the clock in question would be a cuckoo, so playing around indoors with this hand-cannon is no more than might be expected.
“You talkin’ to me...?”
There’s even a piece on the soundtrack, accompanying the gun’s introduction, entitled “The .44 Magnum Is A Monster.” (YouTube link.)
Having said that, it’s worth noting that in the final confrontation – when Bickle proves himself a more than adequate hero by rescuing underage Iris (Jodie Foster) from her life of sex slavery – the huge revolver plays a less significant role than expected from the way it’s been set up. Bickle defeats his opponents with much smaller handguns and even cold steel in the form of a boot knife.
This hero has overcome his monster in more ways than one.
The Thompson plays a much more prominent role in “Scarface” than in “Goncharov”. Rather than a villain’s perverse secondary love interest, there it’s built up as a necessary adjunct of brutal power, which then fades into the background of relationships presented (this was released in 1973 after all) as improper if not actually warped.
“Ice-Pick Joe” Morelli’s (John Cazales) preference for a penetrating weapon rather than a gun (also favoured by real-life mobster Abe “Kid Twist Reles)...
... is a pointer (sorry) at aspects of his character which couldn’t yet be stated clearly on-screen. What remains obvious through Scorsese’s direction and the excellent performances of his actors is that human failings are more destructive than any mere weapon.
It’s a masterful inversion of Chekov’s Gun, the premise where “a gun shown hung on the wall (for which read “any plot element given extra emphasis”) must be fired (used) before the performance ends”.
I haven’t been able to find actual screenshots from the film so these are representative images, but I hope they’ll show how, by utilising "Goncharov”’s recurrent clock motif to segue from Ambrosini (Al Pacino) winding one of his cherished antique timepieces...
... to Lo Straniero (de Niro) winding the clockwork drive of his Thompson gun’s drum magazine (incidentally an action seldom seen in films)...
...Scorsese manipulates his audience into believing that the film will culminate in a classic head-to-head gunfight.
That’s how Brian de Palma, a much less subtle director, ends his 1983 “Scarface” remake, with Tony Montana (Al Pacino) inviting his enemies to “Say hello to my little friend!”, the grenade-launcher attached to his automatic rifle.
Though “Goncharov” does feature some firearms action (it’s a gangster film after all), Scorsese leaves most its guns on the wall as a distraction until his audience realises, as the movie’s climax approaches, that destructive violence can take place as quietly and irreversibly as the passage of time marked out by a ticking clock in a darkened room.

A list of fics where mortals get glimpses of the greek world and/or demigods. Last updated on 8/8/23. Enjoy!
This is War by Tibbitoo
Gen | 1.1k | Complete
Percy Jackson & Paul Blofis
Titan War, Violence, Angst
Because even though the movies get it all wrong, Paul Blofis knows. War is war, and seeing those demigods fighting for their lives, seeing the fallen on the ground, made him finally understand. This wasn't a dream, but a cruel reality where Good and Evil clashed in a bloody battle. This wasn't a book where Good always won. This was a real war. It was reality. His stepson's reality.

“I think that’s Percy Jackson!” “Who?” Sarah rolled her eyes. “The kid who jumped off the St Louis arch years ago, and then there was all that weirdness,” she added, waving her hands for effect, “with a kidnapping or something.” “Oh, the one that’s a demigod?” “Yeah,” she said. She still wasn’t sure if she believed in gods or demigods, but it was hard to deny it at this point. Monsters and worse walked among them, and Sarah hated it. At first, she’d thought it was some strange publicity stunt for an upcoming show or movie—studios had done stranger things to draw crowds, after all—but she knew better now. Gods were real, and so were monsters. ... After the Second Giant War, the Mist falls. The results aren't what anyone expected.

Triton is a Good Sibling, Big Brother Percy, Slice of Life
Anna wasn't sure what to think of Percy Jackson, truth be told, having only met him twice. She adored her daughter in law Sally and her little granddaughter, but there was something about Percy that put her on edge. She had no idea what - he was a kind boy, eager to help with his baby sister when most teenagers would run for the hills and clearly adored his mother - but there was just something about him, something about his too-bright eyes that made her feel uneasy. ~~~ Or, Paul's parents are taking care of Estelle for a few days. When picking her up, they meet Percy again as well as his older brother (what was his name? Tri?). At this point, Anna just wants to know what the dad looks like to have kids that look like THIS. Especially when, several days later, they meet the stepmother as well.

“Just talk to him.” Cody blinked. He could do a lot of things, but approaching Percy Jackson and just talking to him was not one of those things. “We can’t just go and talk to him!” Aida yelped, shifting nervously in her seat. Cody agreed. Percy Jackson was nothing if not intimidating. He’d done so much for Camp Jupiter and walked with more gods than Cody could begin to fathom. There were even rumours that Jupiter (or, Cody supposed, Zeus) had offered him godhood when he’d only been sixteen. Everyone in New Rome knew he spent time in his father’s realm below the sea, and even the Praetors seemed to defer to him at times. No. Cody couldn’t just go up and talk to Percy Jackson. Not many in New Rome would dare. ——— Or, Percy’s part of a group project at NRU. His group mates aren’t exactly sure what to make of him. Or of his mysterious paramour.

"'Man, If I avoided everyone with a bone to pick with me, I'd be a hermit. But I haven't figured out what I'm supposed to have actually done this time?" He could only see half of Percy's face, and even that at a distance, but there was no mistaking the lazy smirk he was wearing, or the way his arms were casually folded across his chest. He wasn't scared of this guy, which didn't make a lick of sense, because just the guy's voice was scaring Giovanni. What could the rest of him look like? "Don't play stupid, kid, it ain't a good look for you. You know good and well what you did." A sudden thud shook the wood of the old dock, making it creak and sway and causing bits of plank to fall. When the dust cleared, Giovanni bit down hard on his tongue to stop himself from gasping, because now that he could see both people above him, he wasn't sure the person opposite Percy was, in fact, human. In which Giovanni learns that there is such a thing as knowing too much about the world around him...

Martha Blofis stared at her son in shock. “What do you mean,” she said slowly, “that you’re married?” Her son fidgeted nervously. First, he ran a hand through his peppered hair, and then his eyes flickered down and away. Then he lifted them again and smiled meekly at her. “Paul,” she said, “I need you to tell me what in gods name you were thinking.” “Her name is Sally Jackson?” Paul said, his voice lifting as he weren’t quite sure what the name of his wife was. AKA Paul tells his mother he hasn't seen in four years that he's married. Really, the only thing she can think about is what she's going to tell her book club.

"I…I can imagine that you, perhaps, might be one of them." For a moment, he just stared back at her, heart now thumping almost painfully fast as he tried to decide how to respond to that. She was right of course, but now that the moment he'd been waiting for had definitely arrived, was he really prepared to do this? "Are we talking about poetry?" He finally asked, mouth dry, as though he didn't already know the answer to his own question, "Or are we talking about…something else?" Or, a week in the life of Percy's senior year, featuring: a poetry project, a swim meet, prom, several identity crises, and maybe, just maybe, a long-overdue conversation with a certain sharp-eyed teacher.

"Paul, you can't seriously think me dying of frostbite or exposure on the way to see the Statue of Liberty for the eighty-millionth time is a good death, right? Like, I could do so much better." Paul shrugged, eyes dancing. "I'm not the expert on death in this family, Perce. But I do imagine it's probably more heroic than dying of boredom in US Government class?"' Tension Tuesday
Just what the title implies. Share a snippet/scene from a wip or completed fic that shows tension.
Honestly I was just looking for an excuse to share something from this wip that has overtaken my life. Any and everyone is welcome to join. Make sure to tag me so I can see!
Owen doesn’t let his sense of relief show on his face when he sees the gurney being rolled out the prison doors. It’s short lived, however, when he realizes Pearce is the only one coming out.
“Where are the others?” Owen demands as Pearce and his partner are loading the gurney into the back of their ambulance.
“Not too far behind.” Pearce doesn’t even spare him a glance, just continues to bag the patient. The IC and the Warden join him as the gurney is lifted by the hydraulics system.
Owen wants to make a snarky comment about Pearce leaving people behind, but he’s interrupted by the Warden.
“Why is he in prisoner clothing?” he asks the accompanying guard.
“What do you mean? Because he’s a prisoner.”
“No, that’s one of my guards, Joseph Morelli.”
Before anyone has time to comprehend what the Warden is telling them he’s on his radio and instructing his officers. “Lock it down. There’s an inmate unaccounted for.” He clicks off his radio and points to the guard. “Take him into custody,” he orders.
The red lights on top of the barbed wire walls spin and flash with the air sirens filling the parking lot with their screeching blasts. It’s almost too loud for Owen to think as he watches guards run along the wall from tower to tower, rifles in hand. SWAT members are re-velcroing their vests and slinging their weapons over their shoulders as they prepare for instruction.
Tommy comes to stand beside him, her hand on his shoulder. He barely feels it, eyes locked on the door Pearce just came through. TK, Paul, and Judd are somewhere trapped inside. And he’s the one that sent them all in.
No pressure tagging under the cut.

Greylock Tapes: They Feed on Fear
Spoiler warning for Greylock Tapes.
Another recurring theme I've observed in Greylock Tapes is fear. For many characters, fear is a natural reaction to the story's events, a supernatural side effect of contact with eldritch forces, and a vital element of thoughtform congitogenesis. I theorize that the supernatural entitles of Greylock Tapes feed on fear and need it to make more of their kind, and induce fear in human targets for this reason.
First, fear appears to be an essential ingredient for the creation of thoughtforms. In Tape 010, Tiffany's therapist plays music and evokes imagery during her hypnosis session that seems intended to induce fear. When Tiffany stands before the Black Door and admits that she's afraid, the therapist dismisses her fear instead of soothing it, saying, "It doesn't matter if your scared." It is strongly implied that the Tall Man manifests soon after. In Tape 012, the "Waking Your Subconscious" module states repeatedly that fear and vulnerability are "essential components" of cognitogenesis. Are thoughtforms servants of the evil consciousness inhabiting Mount Greylock, and if so, are frightened humans a necessary part of their life cycle?
Second, fear is a side effect of close proximity to supernatural entities. In Tape 006, Paul Morelli slowly descends into fearful madness the longer he remains at the excavation site. In Tape 008, Arnold Rivers was seized with fear during and after his foray into the tunnels beneath Mount Greylock. The evil consciousness inhabiting Mount Greylock seems to trigger terror in humans that come within range of its power.
Third, the horrific events of the series seem to be intended to induce fear on a mass scale. The dozens of home invasions documented in Tape 004 would have created mass panic across Berkshire County, as would have the News 13 hijacking and the murder of a popular news anchor in Tape 007 and 008. The mutations and mental degeneration of the miners in Tape 008 would have terrified anyone who beheld them. The supernatural entities behind the series' mayhem excel at igniting fear, and may be doing so on a grand scale intentionally. Do they feed on fear? Does the supernatural consciousness inside Mount Greylock grow stronger when nearby humans are terrified?
Fear is not only the essence of any horror work, but an in-universe constant in Greylock Tapes. This is not by accident, I theorize. Something otherworldly needs human fear, and is going to great lengths to awaken it in the inhabitants of western Massachusetts.

“Case Study”, by Alex Ross and Paul Dini, with Letters by Jack Morelli. From Batman: Black and White.
I did not like or appreciate the Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix. He deserved his Oscar, and my praise for that film stops there. Heath Ledger’s performance was the most on-the-nose realistic. Jack Nicholson’s gleeful psychotic felt closer for me. Mark Hamill is the voice I hear when I read Joker.
He’s not sympathetic. You should not try to empathize. And Harley does not love him. It’s a sick, codependent and abusive relationship. Stop cosplaying it. A lot of cosplay enthusiasts are women. STOP playing Harley and Joker, it’s a sad, fucked up situation. He abuses and manipulates her. When I see you ladies at conventions, it makes me feel like you’re either dressing up for attention, or you’re just straight up damaged goods. Joker doesn’t love Harley. It’s abusive. Cosplaying them as a couple perpetuates an awful message. Stop doing it.
He is a sadistic psychopath that hates Batman because of the positive attention that Batman gets. That’s it. He’s not a sad, misunderstood comedian. He’s a sadistic piece of garbage.
And Alex painted him correctly. He’s not skinny, sunken eyed drug addict. He’s a prize fighter in a gaudy suit. A clown prince; a natural counterpoint to a grim knight.
