Song Review: Ringo Starr - “Time on My Hands”
After more than a half-century away, Ringo Starr is returning to country music.
“Time on My Hands” announces the Jan. 10, 2025, release of Look Up, Starr’s first full-length foray into the genre since 1970’s Beaucoups of Blues. And with T Bone Burnett behind the board and guest slots from Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Alison Krauss, Lucius and Larkin Poe, it has potential.
But the lead single, awash as it is in Nashville Sound strings and steel guitar designed to disguise a pop song, doesn’t bode well. And though Starr didn’t write it - Burnett, co-producer Daniel Tashian and Paul Kennerley did that - “Time on My Hands” is stifled by the simplistic lyrics that plague so much of the former Fab drummer’s music.
I used to have a true love/everything was fine/but now she’s found a new love/she’s no longer mine, Starr sings on the intro.
There are 10 more songs and nine of them have at least one the aforementioned guests on board, so the potential remains. That said, “Time on My Hands” is an inauspicious calling card.
Grade card: Ringo Starr - “Time on My Hands” - C-

THEORETICAL APPROACHES AND TREATMENT MODELS (listed alphabetically)
Practitioners who are unfamiliar with dissociative disorders or to working with DID may prefer to start with texts that are based on their core models or familiar ways of working. Survivors can also expect to come across and be offered a variety of theoretical approaches, summarised below, although none have the monopoly on healing. It is more important that professional help is trauma-informed and based on a collaborative and companionable approach to finding what is best for each individual’s journey.
Attachment-based Psychotherapy – focuses on relationships and bonds between people. It emphasises the developing child’s need to form a healthy emotional bond with at least one primary caregiver for positive social and emotional development.
Doing Psychotherapy: A Trauma and Attachment-Informed Approach, (2020) by Robin Shapiro
Nurturing Children: From Trauma to Growth Using Attachment Theory, Psychoanalysis and Neurobiology, (2019), by Graham Music (See description in Working With children & Adolescents)
Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing, (2010), & Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up, (2019) by Robert Muller
Working with the Developmental Trauma of Childhood Neglect, (2022), by Ruth Cohn
Cognitive & Behavioural – theories and therapies elaborate the interplay between mind, thought, behaviour and action, and demonstrate how they can provoke emotions and contribute towards the maintenance of problems or towards recovery.
Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation, (2013) edited by Fiona Kennedy, Helen Kennerley & David Pearson
DBT Skills Training Handouts and Worksheets, Second Edition, (2014) by Marsha Linehan
Reinventing Your Life, (Schema Therapy-updated 2019) by Jeffrey Young & Janet Klosko
The Compassionate-Mind Guide to Recovering from Trauma and PTSD: Using Compassion-Focused Therapy to Overcome Flashbacks, Shame, Guilt, and Fear, (2013), by Deborah Lee & Sophie James
Trauma-Focused ACT: A Practitioner’s Guide to Working with Mind, Body, and Emotion Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, (2021), by Russ Harris
Creative Therapies – use arts-based models and interventions, including music, drama, movement, art or play, with support from a trained professional. Individuals of all ages may find them helpful because they address issues and support expression without the need to talk or focus on the physical self.
A Therapeutic Treasure Box for Working with Children and Adolescents with Developmental Trauma, (2017), by Karen Treisman
Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy, (2020), by Cathy Malchiodi
Integrative Therapy – affirms and blends different models of therapy with consideration given to what works and why.
Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders, (2009), by Paul Dell & John O’Neil (Eds)
Mindsight: Transform Your Brain with the New Science of Kindness, (2011) by Daniel Siegel
Neurobiology and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation: Towards an Embodied Self, (2008) by Ulrich Lanius, Sandra Paulsen & Frank Corrigan
Working with Voices and Dissociative Parts – A Trauma-informed approach, (2019) by Dolores Mosquera. (See description in Treatment Books)
Internal Family Systems Therapy – elaborates the relationships between parts of self or psyche and demonstrates how separation or division between parts can cause suffering.
Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual: Trauma-Informed Treatment for Anxiety, Depression, PTSD & Substance Abuse, (2017) by Frank Anderson, Richard Schwartz & Martha Sweezy
Internal Family Systems Therapy, 2nd Edition, (2019) by Richard Schwarz & Martha Sweezy
Mindfulness – a meditative practice that reconnects individuals to the present moment; purposefully drawing attention and focus to moment-by-moment, internal and/or external awareness.
Dissociation, Mindfulness, and Creative Meditations: Trauma-Informed Practices to Facilitate Growth, (2017), by Christine Forner
Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Safe and Transformative Healing, (2018), by David Treleaven & Willoughby Britton
Polyvagal Theory – explains the importance and value of interpersonal neurobiology in recovery from trauma, and the effect of trauma on the body and the brain. The Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological Foundations of Emotions, Attachment, Communication, and Self-Regulation, (2011) by Stephen Porges The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy, (2018) by Deb Dana
Psychoanalytic – theories and therapies that aim to treat mental disorders and distress by investigating the interaction of conscious and unconscious mind.
The Dissociative Mind in Psychoanalysis: Understanding and Working with Trauma, (2016), by Elizabeth Howell & Sheldon Itzkowitz
Trauma, Dissociation and Multiplicity: Working on Identity and Selves, (2010) edited by Valerie Sinason
Psychodynamic – based on the theories and principles of psychoanalysis, but with an increased emphasis on an individual’s relationship with their external world; seeks to understand conscious and unconscious processes that influence emotions, thoughts and behaviour patterns.
Easy Ego State Interventions: Strategies for Working with Parts, (2016) by Robin Shapiro
Somatic (Body-Oriented) Resources – recognise that trauma and its effects are stored within the body, and cause dysregulation and restriction to movement and/or emotion.
EMDR Eye Movement, Desensitisation & Reprocessing – a psychotherapeutic approach that uses visual, auditory or tactile stimuli bilaterally, (from side-to-side of the body), in a rhythmical pattern, to enable reprocessing of memory and its effects. Care needs to be exercised with RAMCOA survivors, since similar techniques have been used in some survivors’ abuse, and EMDR may prove triggering or breach the therapeutic relationship.
EMDR and Dissociation: The Progressive Approach, (2012) by Anabel Gonzalez & Dolores Mosquera
EMDR Toolbox: Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation, 2nd Edn, (2018), by James Knipe
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy – an evolving “body-oriented talking therapy”, helps individuals stabilise, discharge and resolve physiological symptoms of trauma and adverse experiences.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment, (2015) by Pat Ogden & Janina Fisher
Trauma and the Body, (2006) by Pat Ogden, Kekuni Minton & Clare Pain
Additionally: The Body Remembers Volume 2, (2017) by Babette Rothschild 8 Keys to Safe Trauma Recovery, (2010) by Babette Rothschild
Somatic Experiencing – focuses on the body and perceived body sensations, to express and relieve mental and physical traumatic stress-related conditions.
In an Unspoken Voice, (2010) by Peter Levine
Waking the Tiger, (1997) by Peter Levine

It’s time to explore the final Hammer Horror film of the 1970s, To the Devil… a Daughter (1976). [Note: The mystery comedy film The Lady Vanishes (1979) would drop and… vanish… in 1979.] To the Devil… a Daughter has the reputation of putting the final nail into Hammer’s filmmaking coffin. The quality and success of Hammer productions spiraled throughout the decade as the landscape of horror films changed – especially after The Exorcist (1973). Surprisingly, the film is much better than how the Grue Crew remembers it and how its reputation proceeds it. That is, up until its abrupt and head-scratching ending and that strange devil puppet. If you know, you know. Check out what the Grue Crew thinks of the film directed by Peter Sykes and featuring Christopher Lee, Richard Widmark, and Nastassja Kinski.
At the time of this writing, To the Devil… a Daughter is available to stream from Peacock and PlutoTV as well as various PPV from Amazon and Fandango At Home. To the Devil… a Daughter is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from SCREAM Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973), an ABC Movie of the Week starring Kim Darby, Jim Hutton, William Demarest, and Barbara Anderson. Grue Believer Lone Wolf suggested this flick. Woot!

The National Theatre revival is the first fully staged major London production of Follies to present the original Broadway version of the show. Sondheim and Goldman revised large parts of the show’s script and score for its 1987 London premiere, toning down the underlying bleakness of the Broadway original, and offering a more hopeful finale for its central characters. Director Dominic Cooke revisited early drafts of Goldman’s script, restoring original dialogue and moments that have not been seen in the production since its 1971 Broadway run. Staged over a four-day shoot in a rented Union City, NJ theater, the production starred Tony Award®-winning actor Shuler Hensley (Oklahoma) as The Creature and featured Broadway veterans Ivan Rutherford (Les Miserables) as Victor Frankenstein and Rita Harvey (Phantom of the Opera) as Elizabeth. The production was a hybrid of a film and a live show. Shot cinematically out-of-sequence with multiple cameras and without an audience, the show was nonetheless filmed on a single stage with traditional theatrical lighting. The final product was published on DVD in 2002, but only screened privately for potential backers of future productions. - wikipedia Freaky Friday - First National Tour - May 2, 2017 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Heidi Blickenstaff (Katherine Blake), Emma Hunton (Ellie Blake), David Jennings (Mike Harper), Chris Ramirez (Adam), Jake Heston Miller (Fletcher Blake), Jessie Hooker-Bailey (Savannah), Jeannette Bayardelle (Journalist/Ms. Meyers/Officer Sitz/Ensemble) NOTES: Excellent HD capture of the new musical on tour, based on the Disney film. The Final Haul from The Rib Brothers: Tuesday, 12 April, 2022:
White Mansions: A Tale From The American Civil War 1861-1865 Various Artists (A&M) (released in 1978)
Paul Kennerley is a British songwriter who fell hard for country music after hearing Waylon Jennings. He quit his job in advertising and decided to write country songs. You may never have heard of Kennerley or this album, but you’ve undoubtedly heard his work. He’s written for everyone from Waylon to Emmylou Harris (whom he even married). One of Emmylou’s best songs, Born To Run, was penned by Kennerley. Numerous people have covered his songs from the Waco Brothers to Linda Ronstadt from Trisha Yearwood to Harry Dean Stanton, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Jason and The Scorchers. And to he’s even recorded a rockabilly EP (Misery With A Beat) that more than one person believes to be a lost classic (and it is harder than heck to find). His story is rather remarkable considering how one day he knew nothing about country music to the next day he is a genuine authentic country songwriter who gets endless accolades from those in the know.
He’s produced and written two concept albums, White Mansions and 1979′s The Legend of Jesse James and he always courts big names because everyone wants to be associated with Kennerley. When I spotted this album under the compilations in the rock section I was surprised, but I snapped it up. Despite that uncompromising cut out mark on the cover (it resembles a buckshot from a civil war gun) I wanted this album. It’s an elaborate piece of packaging. Check out the gatefold below. The first photo is the gatefold containing the thick booklet that comes with it. You will see it in the die-cut gatefold. The second photo of the gatefold removes the booklet from the sleeve.
Next up you will find the cover of the booklet and then the follow up picture reveals the back of that 28 page booklet.
There are a variety of people performing as characters on this album. They include Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessi Coulter, John Dillon and Steve Cash (both of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils at the time) with such musicians as Bernie Leadon (late of The Eagles) and Eric Clapton providing the music (among a variety of others). Glyn Johns of all people serves as the producer on the project. Below you can see both sides of the inner sleeve.
Lastly, the labels for Side 1 and Side 2.
Contrary to popular belief (on the Hoffman Forum) Levon Helm is not on the album.

30 April 2020: "That’s the Truth” b/w “Joshua Gone Barbados,” Johnny Cash. (Columbia, 1983)
When I bought the Bill Withers 45 in my previous post on Discogs, the seller had a deal where you could get something like five additional 45s with no extra shipping cost. All of his stuff was just a dollar or two, and I looked through everything he had. This was just a silly impulse purchase, representing that part of my brain that thought, thirty years ago, that one day I’d have a jukebox in my home and would need plenty of my favorites to fill it. I don’t have a jukebox and doubt I ever will, but should the day come “That’s the Truth” will get a spot on it. I’d amassed a lot of Johnny Cash records before the 63-disc box The Complete Columbia Album Collection came out in 2012, but there were plenty of albums I hadn’t heard before and 1983′s Johnny 99 was one of them. This 45 spotlights my favorite track from that record, written by the underrated British-expat-in-Nashville Paul Kennerley, and I’d probably include it on a list of my favorite Cash tunes overall. There’s no picture sleeve, so you just see the two labels above.
45 purchases like this are even more extraneous for me now than they ever were. Sometime in the mid-’90s my Dad built two 45-storage tables for my brother. They’ve got bins so you can flip through the records that they hold. They’re the kind of furniture you’d see in a record store. These heavy-duty items are still in the family. Sometime around 1997, I think it was, one of these tables was transferred to my house. It traveled with me, earning a place of pride in the music rooms of seven different apartments in two states. I long ago reached the point where it would no longer hold all my 45s, and my album storage hit a crisis point during the past two or three years. I desperately needed new shelving for albums; hundreds upon hundreds, maybe over a thousand, are just propped up against my existing album shelves. The 45 table has a bottom shelf on which nearly 300 albums can live, but this wasn’t close to enough storage room. But my space is limited and I had to choose: I could either keep the 45 table, or I could remove it and get new album shelving. On March 19 of 2020, I finally bought the album shelves I’d wanted for so long. The trick of it, though, was I had to remove the 45 table before I built the album shelf. The plan was for me to rent a van and drive it down to its original home, my brother’s house. We didn’t want to get rid of it, and he has scads of room. But then COVID happened, and a trip like that was out of the question. I couldn’t keep the giant 45 table in my dining room until COVID ended (or at least my girlfriend wouldn’t want me to), so I went another year with the stacks of albums on my floor growing and growing. My music room is also my office, and I work from home now, and it all felt very claustrophobic at times.
Once vaccines started happening and it became less deadly to have short, masked visits with trustworthy family members, my brother surprised me by saying he and his wife would rent a van and drive up and get the table. I considered it a pleasure to pay for the van in exchange for this enormous errand, and two Fridays ago they came and the table is no longer here. The thousand albums are now propped up in the living room waiting for me to build and install the new shelf. For now, though, I’ve just been enjoying the seemingly vast open space in my music room. This must be what it’s like for people who live in real houses and not city apartments. The shelf-building will be an all-day affair, and I’m gearing myself up for the task, possibly next weekend.
As for my 45s, at the same time I bought the new shelves I bought storage boxes custom-made for 45s. They will go on top of the new shelf.
Here’s the table, and then my cat exploring the post-removal vacancy. I’ll miss that table. There’s nothing like browsing your own 45s like you’re in a record store. More than that, though, it’s an object I adore; my father built it, and it feels like part of my being.

Illawarra Squads Named For Country Week
It will be a big weekend in Tamworth over the Long Weekend for the NSW Country Championships. The Illawarriors Senior and Womens Squads will be there to defend their Country Titles won in 2018. The Under 19 Colts will also be there competing for the outright Colts Championship after many years languishing in 2nd tier competition.
The Senior Illawarriors will probably go into the weekend considered favorites for the title with Newcastle Hunter choosing not to attend this year’s tournament. The Illawarriors will be shooting for our fourth title in five years. First up we play Central Coast on Saturday at 3.50PM for a place in the Caldwell Cup Final to be played on Sunday at the impressive Scully Park complex at West Tamworth.
The Ladies have two pool games to play on Saturday against Central North (9.40AM) and Central West (2.30PM) with the winner of the pool progressing through to the Womens Final on Sunday (10.50AM). The Lady Illawarriors are rated number one in their Pool and favored to win through to meet either Hunter, Mid North Coast or Central Coast in the Finals matches.
The Colts are in for a long day on Saturday with an early 8.00AM start against Mid North Coast. The other sides in the Colts Pool are the strong Newcastle/Hunter (12.20PM) and Central West (2.30PM). It’s a tough Pool for the young guys but this group has talent across the squad and will do the Illawarra proud.
You can get all the details as they occur on the IDRU Facebook page and a full report from the Rogue on the Website at the end of each days play.
The Senior and Colts Squads have been finalized with the Womens to be completed by Wednesday.
