kickin this blog off with a writing assignment that i LOVED.. it’s super long tho
In a hurried manner came along a Baker.
Although only a humble bread maker,
Her creativity flow’d like a river;
But she only showed a sliver
Of oh, how dearly she so desired
To be a poet like whom she admired.
Her heart was filled with merit and good
With her tales being filled with knighthood.
When it was her turn to tell a story
She launched into a tale of glory.
“Excuse me if this gets too long,” she said,
“For I’m still fixing the details in my head.
But without any further unneeded talk
Let me begin whilst we continue to walk.
The Baker’s Tale
Over the sunset came a bumbling knight;
Within her heart, there wasn’t a lick of spite.
Her name was Marien, a former farmer.
She grabbed her sword and polished her armour
After she realized that her calling in life
Was to save the knowledge of food from strife.
Fighting to save all of the legacies
Of secret and treasured recipes.
With her dear trusted draft horse, Constantine,
She searched for special recipes of bloodlines; Barley bread, lemon cake, veal, mutton, fish,
As payment, she would accept any dish.
Her passion for knowledge sent her far and wide,
From mild situations from ones where she'd have died.
She desired most the King’s Patty-Melt
Which had a taste famed across the greenbelt.
This quest of hers sent her on the trail
Of a fight where other knights would grow pale;
In the solemn kingdom of Iveswardoon
A plague had been ravaging the land since June.
This horror was no less than a monster’s kin
That was lead by an enormous goblin.
Its name was Urgolaz, and it had five wives;
All of which had born six ugly lives.
This clan of monsters pillaged and robbed
All who they came across. They mobbed
And attacked the churches and ate the people —
The only safe place seemed to be the steeple —
Until at last our heroic roving knight
Sought to make this awful horror right.
With Constantine she leapt into battle
Thoroughly disrupting their butchery of cattle
And after two hours had slain them all.
An Ogre, Suzelheft, was disgusted at her gall
He had set the goblins upon the town
And had no intention of settling down
Anywhere else; thus, he called a great bear.
‘Go to Iveswardoon,’ he boomed, ‘and seek
That human, make her future look bleak.
Make sure that kingdom is fit for me!
Now go, do not tally! You have places to be.’
The bear, Borwag, was the fiercest in the land.
He was famed for the blade in his shoulder
And his maw, which was as big as a boulder
If you believed the stories about him.
He roared and came upon Marien in her sleep;
She was within a dream so deep
That she never heard the bear charging.
But old and restless Constantine did! Barging
Into the bear’s chest, he flung himself into
The fray, swinging this way and that. He threw
Borwag into a state of rage, and the bear rose up.
One swipe would have been enough to kill him,
But the horse grabbed his master’s blade
And down fell Borwag! Slain without any aid.
When Marien woke in the morn, she was awed.
‘Constantine, you noble steed,’ she guffawed,
‘I’m lucky to have you! I almost perished.
Come! I’d think his head would earn us a dish.’
So she buckled Borwag’s head to the saddle.
When word reached Suzelheft, he was addled.
‘Some useless minions I have!’ he groaned.
‘I’ll run out of monsters,’ the ogre moaned,
‘If I continue down this path. I’m rui- wait!
‘If a good trap, I can create,
‘I’ll capture a member of the royal family.
Then that foolish knight will come to me!’
Suzelheft snickered and laughed as he limped.
No more money on minions would be skimped
For this feat, he needed only two.
Narsh and Olgra, two Fae sisters, would do;
They were famed for their cruelty and vile,
Whipping men and calling it a harsh trial.
They skulked around the castle grounds until
Hammond, the Queen’s boy, came out in the morning chill.
With a shriek, the two grabbed him and ran.
Amidst the screams of the boy, out came Ann,
The royal nurse and she went running
To King Emeric and Queen Dona.
‘The Fae sisters have taken the boy,’ she wailed,
‘What will we do?’ Emeric sent a courier
To shout the news out. Marien caught wind of this,
And immediately knew it was amiss
So they raced down to the castle, and
Upon arrival, asked for the job via demand.
The Royalty agreed, and they sped off
Leaping over rivers and taking the cutoffs
Until at last, they reached the cave where
Poor Hammond lay in fear and prayer.
Equipping her blade of honed whalebone,
The knight leapt forth and slew Narsh, the young one,
But Olga saw her coming and dodged,
The swipe of her claws missed and was lodged
In a nearby tree; it was quick and painless.
Picking up the boy, whose coat was stainless,
They headed back to the town when someone approached.
The someone was Suzelheft, and he was mad,
And to find Marien, he was glad
Lifting a club, he roared and stomped
Towards the three, which served as a prompt
For old Constantine to rear and buck,
Which, in a stroke of the best kind of luck,
Hit the giant ogre straight in the chest.
Marien struck him right between the breast
And down he fell! Never to wake again.
When the King was told, he launched into a speech;
‘How can we repay you, I beseech?
Perhaps you want a prince, or riches and gold?
Wealth beyond measure, or land untold?’
Marien looked the King dead in the eye,
‘I need but one thing before I say ‘bye’
And that would be the recipe for your
Patty-Melt. It is my desire- not to be a boor.’
So Marien and Constantine, jolly
And dear, knew that it was not in vain, their folly.
For they walked along with the Patty-Melt
And oh, how good the knowledge felt!
