In order to describe the boundaries of the world under discussion I need to show you through maps. So I want to begin by explaining the three maps above. (not mine, the latter two are from the games themselves while the first one is taken off google and is a fan-made map of the entire Fallout world).

As the Fallout franchise, like the Lord of the Rings one, has a lot of lore not included within the games considering other locations, a few people have attempted to map this. By far the best one is the one above. The Fallout world is limited to the US for one simple reason, or this is my theory at least: only in the US would there be enough weapons left behind after the apocalypse to make this game work (as one of its pillars is combat).

I will say more about the major factions and which areas they control later. Right now, the important thing to note is the major markers that determine where the game maps shown above are located. If you look at the boundary between the red and the white areas you will find New Vegas. This is where Fallout New Vegas is centered. If you look to the east coast at the green area, you will see “Citadel” and “Raven Rock”. This is where Fallout 3 is set, in and around the ruins of Washington D.C. NOTE: This description does not include expansion packs (which will be discussed in a second).

As we can see in the second map, which is the Fallout 3 game map, there is an area with a lot of streets near the bottom right corner. These are the ruins of Washington DC on either side of the Potomac River. The player starts near the middle of the map in Vault 101 (Vaults were discussed in my first post). From there the entire area is accessible. A few key point to note because they are interesting is Rivet City (bottom right corner) which is actually a beached aircraft carrier, The Republic of Dave, where one deranged man and his family established a country on a 50 sq. yard plot of land, Raven Rock, where the main antagonist, “President Edens” is based with his army “the Enclave”, which is one of the factions the US military splintered into after the war, Megaton, a city that you get to blow up by triggering an unexploded atomic bomb should you choose to do so, and finally, the Temple of the Union, where the head of Lincoln from the Lincoln Memorial was found by a group of slaves (slavery is a thing in these games) and who have banded together as a militia force. I have included these descriptions to illustrate the variability of locations within the game. Most of this map is flat, with a few hills and canyons, and of course the river flowing through the middle. The area is called the Capital Wasteland for a reason, it’s a waste full of dust where radiation replaced vegetation. When all is said and done, it is a wonderful destination with fun for the whole family.

Finally I would like to draw your attention to the third map, one of the Fallout New Vegas game world. Near the top, where all the streets are, is the city of New Vegas, one that remained nearly untouched by the nuclear holocaust because the richest man in the city installed massive anti-air guns on the top of his hotel. In this game the player starts in Goodsprings (left side, half-way up) where he is dug up by a robot after being shot in the head by one of the comic relief villains of the game. He is then patched together by the local doctor and set on his merry way. You will see that there are two highways that lead north to south, that is because the one that is immediately accessible is populated by enemies that you can’t defeat at a low level. You have to go all the way down and then back up along the second highway on the map. Once again, the entire area is accessible right of the bat. A few key areas of interest are “The Strip”, which is the center of the city of New Vegas and is lined with casinos, Camp McCarran, the main base of the New California Republic (the only democracy in the world), Hoover Dam, where the final battle occurs, Searchlight, a town where a bomb exploded and irradiated everything, leaving a ghostly haze above the town, the Fort, a massive underground complex that the slaver forces of Caesar’s Legion built their base on top of (unknowingly), Jacobstown, a community up in the mountains populated by friendly super mutants (think slightly smarter Hulks), and my favorite, Nellis Airforce Base (up north) where a band of half-lunatics found a stockpile of rockets and a rocket launcher and are firing at anyone that tries to approach them (they turn out to be pretty nice in the end though).

The various add on locations for both games are also on the world map (mostly clustered around the central locations). As they will also be a part of the analysis, I feel I should list them. I hope to dedicate a post to them later as (especially for New Vegas) they are frequently even better than the core game. The format is “Location on map (Expansion Pack Name)”:

Fallout 3: The Pitt (The Pitt), Adams Air Force Base (Broken Steel), Point Lookout (Point Lookout), NOTE: Mothership Zeta (Mothership Zeta) and Anchorage (Operation Anchorage) are not on the map.

Fallout New Vegas: Zion Canyon (Honest Hearts), Hopeville (Lonesome Road), NOTE: Big MT (Old World Blues) and Sierra Madre Resort (Dead Money) are not on the map but are located in the Mojave Dessert near New Vegas.

Sorry for the long post. Hopefully this will provide everyone with a solid idea of what the world is like and I hope that my introducing some locations within the game maps serves to bring you closer to what is actually going on here.
