HI KAT OMG thank you so much for asking about this it means a lot and I love talking about my blorbos

so the EmCU is my superhero universe, where in the busy and on-the-rise city of New Porthaven, USA, (Newhaven to its residents) two mysterious underground agencies go head-to-head in the shadows.

Lodestone wants to guide the world in their direction, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if it weren’t for all the atrocities and human rights violations. Polaris wants to stop Lodestone, and maybe save the world while they’re at it. While Lodestone worked on their desperate attempts to create superheroes, Polaris figured it would just be easier to get help from those that were already out there, and so they recruited the first superhero who could afford to have an identity that was an open secret: the conveniently wealthy billionaire Elise Nguyen, of NguyenTech. From there, the team grew, and the Revenant League (working name, please send suggestions 😭) was formed.

I can give you a rundown of all the superheroes I’ve got so far!

Antigone

- Name is Astrid Swarovski. Her power is electrokinesis, electricity manipulation. She can fry you from the inside out or the outside in, your choice.

Monarch

- Elise Nguyen. Her only superpower is being rich, kinda genius, and very resourceful. But mostly being rich.

The Black Swan

- Delilah Boudicca-Ayala. She was recruited by Lodestone at an early age and witnessed firsthand the horrors of their underage spy program. Eventually she got out and helped lead a mass defection, but not before becoming one of the deadliest women in the world.

Bloodstone

- Annalise Larkin. Her power is hemokinesis, meaning she can manipulate blood, which made her a prime target for Lodestone, who took her from her family and bled her dry with experiments. She has definitive control over neither her powers nor her sanity.

Prion

- Sadie Kline. Like Delilah, Sadie was recruited into Lodestone. She has no powers, but once she discovered Lodestone’s dark underbelly, with the help of two of her fellow “Birds” (the teenage spies Lodestone uses), she led the second mass defection from Lodestone.

Oriole

- Christina Cleary. A Bird as well, she was teamed up with Sadie in training and in the field. She’s tech savvy, which came in handy when Sadie started questioning Lodestone’s true motives.

Harpy

- Malia Armstrong. Another one of the Birds, she, Sadie, and Christina quickly became fast friends. Her powers are vocal, ranging from vocal mimicry to vocal-induced mind control and voice theft. She quickly realized that if Lodestone found out about her burgeoning skill set, she would be in grave danger, which led her to team up with Sadie and Christina in their defection to Polaris.

The Grim

- Patrick Kennard. He has supersenses that allow him to not only track bad guys down, but know their next move before they take it. They say it’s like fighting a dark mirror. His protectiveness over a specific area of the city populated almost exclusively by British Isles immigrant families and superstitious old Anglican grannies has earned him the nickname of the Grim, referring to the Church Grim of English folklore - an omen of death, but a fierce protector of the churchyard.

The Hail Mary

- Nere Madden, who has the ability to manipulate pain. One of the only survivors of a deadly disease that wiped out her entire town and family, raised in isolation under scientific study with only the other survivor of the disease for company. She eventually escaped, and has been hopping cities ever since, desperately trying to stay ahead of her pursuers. She only works with Polaris for the protection they provide.

The Warden Project

- alien abduction will fuck you up. Aliens experimenting on you, replacing your body parts with robotics just to see how long you’ll last, and turning you into a living weapon designed to take out anyone deemed a threat to the galaxy’s nosiest neighbors? That’ll fuck you up worse.

- The Warden: Halyna Hansen. She hasn’t had a good day in a long time. She was the only one that got away… or so she thinks.

- The Huntsman: Holden Taylor is not the friend Halyna remembers. Halyna’s escape made her the #1 target on the hitlist, and Holden’s had some… behavioral modifications to ensure he won’t hold back when it comes time to kill her.

- The Sentinel: Aleyla Tahir, who is honestly having a much better time than either of her two friends, seeing as how she’s not actively being brainwashed or being hunted down by an international assassin.

I’ve got like, 10 more characters under construction, but these are all the ones I really have enough info to talk about rn. Oh! I also forgot to say I try to match a lot of the characters’ origin stories to fairytales - Nere is Rapunzel, Sadie is Red Riding Hood, Halyna is Snow White (Elise might be too, oops), etc. If you’re curious pls keep asking about them it motivates me to work on them more!!!

Hanno anche una scopa ciascuno, in spalla, Chloe una Nimbus 3200 ricevuta l’anno scorso. Non corre, ma poco ci manca. In viso due strisce rosso sangue a decorare le guance.

S | I due stanno davanti e sono vestiti esattamente come il capitano della loro squadra, i Wigtown Wanderers, con quei pantaloncini rossi e una maglietta a maniche corte di un paio di taglie in più ma del medesimo colore, con il logo della squadra in alto a destra sul petto con tanto di numero e nome "Homley" scritto sulla schiena. Appoggiata sulla spalla destra c’è una Nimbus 3000 riconoscibile come una di quelle che la Squadra usava più di una ventina di anni fa, ma non per questo curata meno di quella che porta Chloe. Nella mano sinistra, invece, tiene stretto il suo peluche-accetta, dove è ben visibile l’autografo di Elizabeth Liece, battitrice della squadra. Sulla guancia sinistra ci sono due "WW" nere mentre sulla destra due strisce rosse.

C | «Sei thunder, sì! Se l’idea è stata tua.» annuisce mentre fa un passo verso di lei, aspettando che anche il fratello l’abbia affiancata prima di parlare nuovamente «Siamo qui per fare le foto! Per le figurine!»

A | «Thunder» la ripete per sicurezza, quella parola il sopracciglio destro sollevato verso l’alto ed in viso l’espressione dubbiosa di chi si sta chiedendo se sia un bene o un male.

S | «ogni tanto dice così» alzando gli occhi al cielo e facendo un mezzo sbuffo «stare tra i Tassorosso fa male»

C | «Significa che qualcosa è tanto figo!» spiega il termine dopo il commento del fratello «Lo usiamo in squadra a scuola.»

A | «Thunder, mi piace!» - «E tu di che casata saresti, invece?»

S | «Grifondoro, ovvio.» - «tu dove stavi, mh?»

Nessun’altra squadra! Solo i Wanderers!» - «E poi ci stiamo tutti e due in una figurina, al massimo!»

S | Il capo alzato verso la donna e quando va dicendo che non sa se ha ancora posto «Noi siamo i migliori però» prima di tutto «Liece mi ha pure firmato questa» e alza quel suo peluche in alto «visto?» ... viene naturale imitare un conato di vomito «COS?» schifatissimo «I cannoni schifo imbroglioni, magari» borbottando appena «Infatti.» e ora l’accetta va ad accennare alla Tassorosso, loro due ci stanno in una figurina «non puoi scegliere.»

A love letter to Ajax, Europe's most exciting team

In Engeland they are deeply impressed by the accomplishments of this young, talented Ajax team.

It resulted in a love letter to 'butterfly' Ajax - in The Telegraph, one of Britain's biggest newspapers - going viral.

Ajax is winning hearts.

"They are doing the impossible"

This is a love letter, a tribute to a team that has made me fall in love with football again and a club who have reminded us all that something pure remains unsullied in the beautiful game. 

You may not fully appreciate how special Ajax are, not yet. You will probably be unaware of the journey this famous Dutch club has been on, the thinking behind the process that has brought them to the brink of a Champions League final for the first time in 23 years.

Ajax are amazing and I do not use those words lightly. They play with freedom of expression, they play like a team born in Amsterdam, that most artistic and rebellious of cities where you are allowed to indulge; where hedonism is a way of life and your creativity is nurtured and encouraged. If ever a football team symbolised its home city, it is Ajax.

It is an incredible team, not just a joy to behold, but remarkable because this is simply not supposed to happen in the modern game.

What makes them special, so unique, is that this Ajax team will not build a dynasty, they will not dominate. Ajax are like a butterfly, beautiful, bewitching, but already dying. Almost from the moment they spread their wings in Europe this season, long before they knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus in the knockout stage, they knew they were reaching the end of their time together.

They are a team to be cherished because these are already their final days. In the summer, this Ajax team will be broken up, their best players scattered around Europe’s biggest clubs, spread all over the continent depending on who offers the most money to entice them away.

And consider this too – Ajax have produced more players, developed in their academy for three or more years, currently playing in Europe's top divisions than any other club in the world. This is not new, what is different, is that for once they have been allowed to grow and develop together. For the time being at least.

Speak to anyone connected with Ajax they will tell you it is inevitable the team will be torn apart. There is sadness, but it is fleeting because this team has made people proud.

It is a team designed to play to win, to never take a backward step, a team which intends to dominate, not merely to survive, even though that is what the club has been forced to do.

Watch Ajax play and you will see and you will, I’m sure, fall in love. The youngest side to reach the knockout stage of this year’s Champions League has also been by far the best to watch. 

The style of football has been likened to playing in the middle of whirlwind, such is the speed and power of those in Ajax shirts, they come at you with such unrelenting ferocity.

They pass and move with a speed not seen for years. Players with good technical ability, able to play in a variety of positions. They are the embodiment of the Total Football values that Dutch football has always prided itself on. They deserve their place alongside all the great Ajax sides of yesteryear, but they have done it in an era when it was supposed to be impossible for them to compete.

Ajax have built this side from a mixture of homegrown talent and bargain buys. The most expensive players, Dusan Tadic, signed from Southampton for around £10m last summer and winger David Neres, signed for around the same amount from Sao Paulo two years ago, are a Premier League reject and a player who spent his first season in the development squad.

It is a team forged from the arrogance and swagger of youth, whether it is midfielder Frenkie de Jong – who has already signed for Barcelona for £75m and will leave in the summer – or centre back and captain, the 19-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, a target for every major club in Europe who scored the winning goal against Juventus, everywhere you look there is an Ajax youngster blossoming.

Ajax built this team from the bottom up. They did not poach the best players, they did not buy the established stars everyone wanted. They built a team with their own vision and hard work, mainly in their own academy. They constructed an awesome side because they believed in their ability to produce and nurture their own players

Ajax may be a famous old name, but they are paupers these days, a relic from a more egalitarian age when all the big clubs, from all the European leagues, could dream of conquering the continent.

Those days were supposed to be gone. We are now in the era of the Super Clubs, when oil-rich nation own football clubs and multi-billionaires jostle with each other for international prestige. We are, if you look across Europe, at a point where the same big teams win their domestic leagues year after year, in Germany, France, Scotland, Italy and beyond. Even in England, the richest club, Manchester City could win the quadruple.

Ajax had supposedly been left behind, but this is a club where supporters do not chant excitedly about one of their own wearing the red and white shirt, they expect it.

Ajax’s wage bill last season was less than Aston Villa, Cardiff, Middlesbrough and Wolves when they were in the Championship last season. It was also beneath Celtic’s – a club with an equally grand history and reputation. It has gone up a little this season, but it will still be lower than every Premier League team.

This time last year, Ajax feared the time had come for their best players to leave, but the club asked the likes of de Jong, de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek to give them another season. Only striker Justin Kluivert, son of Patrick, did not listen, leaving for Roma where he has struggled for first team football.

The rest stayed put, promising the club that had launched their careers, one more year. One more season to win the Dutch league, to win silverware together and surely all of us most now hope it is the biggest prize of all that is paraded through the streets of Amsterdam in June.

Ajax, champions of Europe, would be an even better fairytale than Leicester City winning the Premier League.

John Patrick McEnroe Jr nasce il 16 febbraio del 1959 a Wiesbaden, nell’ex Germania Ovest, in una base militare statunitense dove all’epoca il padre prestava servizio come ufficiale della Air Force Statunitense. Figlio di John Joseph McEnroe, che una volta tornato in patria diventa associato in uno degli studi legali più prestigiosi di New York, e di Katherine Tresham, ex infermiera figlia di un vice sceriffo di Long Island; è dalla madre che John ‘eredita’ il carattere, quella “visione del mondo” che tanto lo influenzerà durante le tappe più importanti della sua vita, sia dentro che fuori dal campo da tennis. “La personalità di mio padre è intrisa di umorismo irlandese, infatti non c’è niente che ami di più che ritrovarsi con gli amici e farsi due birre. Mia madre invece è sempre stata una donna molto timida, eccessivamente esigente, diffidente anche verso le persone più miti. Per lei non esistono sfumature: le cose sono bianche o nere. A differenza di mio padre, io non saprei ripetere una barzelletta nemmeno fosse una questione di vita o di morte, ma in compenso tutte le ‘spigolosità di mia madre si sono impresse dentro di me”.

John cresce a Douglaston, la tipica zona residenziale dell’area metropolitana di New York. Suo padre lo iscrive all’Accademia di Port Washington e inizia a giocare a tennis sotto alla guida di due maestri d’eccezione: Antonio Palafox, uno dei doppisti più forti negli anni 60’ ed Harry Hopman; l’uomo che aveva creato Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Lew Hoad e Roy Emerson. Proprio come il suo idolo, Rod Laver, il piccolo John usa la stessa impugnatura per ogni colpo: diritto, rovescio, servizio e volée. Non solo i suoi allenatori, anche un noto giornalista sportivo, tale George Lott, riconosce in lui le stigmate del campione, eppure a dodici anni il suo sogno è quello di diventare un giocatore professionista di basket. “Più le cose andavano bene, più diventava difficile anche solo pensare di abbandonare il tennis”; spiega con il senno di poi Mcenroe che ad appena sedici anni viene considerato uno dei migliori juniores degli Stati Uniti. A diciassette anni, quando ancora gli US Open si giocavano sulla terra verde, sfiora l’accesso al tabellone principale, o meglio, per alcuni minuti si qualifica proprio. Sul punteggio di 5-7 7-5 5-4, John va a servire per il match contro il numero 150 del mondo Zan Guerry ed un passante di rovescio sulla riga induce il giudice di sedia a proclamare: “game, set, match McEnroe”. Guerry però non va a stringergli la mano, rimane a fissare il segno, per interminabili minuti richiamando l’attenzione dell’arbitro che, controllato il segno, conferma la sua decisione. John McEnroe invece di uscire dal campo, si intestardisce: vuole che il suo avversario si riconosca sconfitto e gli stringa la mano. Messo al corrente del parapiglia interviene il giudice arbitro, Anita Shukov, che fa ripetere il punto. McEnroe perde le staffe ed il match: da quel giorno arbitri e avversari saranno suoi nemici giurati.

La stella di John McEnroe si staglia in tutto il suo splendore nell’estate del 1977. Partito con 500 $ sponsorizzati dalla USTA alla volta dell’Europa, vince il Roland Garros under 18 juniores e il doppio misto in coppia con Mary Carillo. A Wimbledon supera tre turni di qualificazioni e raggiunge le semifinali, prima di cedere a Jimmy Connors. “Prima del match mi avvicinai per salutarlo. Per me era già uno sforzo alzare la testa e guardarlo negli occhi ma lui non mi guardò nemmeno. Era come se si rifiutasse perfino di riconoscere che esistevo”. Diventato professionista nel giugno del 1978, il mancino americano non riesce a confermare la strepitosa performance di Wimbledon ma scrive il suo nome nell’albo d’oro del Master dove sconfigge in finale Arthur Ashe. Da quel momento McEnroe è inarrestabile: nel 1979 vince dieci tornei, tra cui Dallas dove sconfigge in finale Bjorn Borg e si afferma per la prima volta in un torneo del Grande Slam, agli US Open, dove si sbarazza di Jimmy Connors, in semifinale e, nel match decisivo, di Vitas Gerulaitis.

L’anno seguente John McEnroe, che aveva già osato infrangere il religioso silenzio del “All England Club” con le sue intemperanze, entra nella storia di Wimbledon grazie alla finale, leggendaria, che gioca contro Bjorn Borg. Lo svedese è in vantaggio di due set a uno quando durante il tie-break si vede annullare cinque match point prima che l’americano, al sesto tentativo, porti l’incontro al quinto set. “Quando vinsi il tie-break per 18-16 sentivo di aver vinto il match. Pensai che Borg si sarebbe demotivato. Ma la forza che lo animava era al di là della mia immaginazione”. Borg riesce a prevalere 8-6 al quinto vincendo il suo quinto Wimbledon consecutivo ma, poche settimane dopo, McEnroe difende il suo titolo US Open, sconfiggendo in finale proprio l’orso svedese per 7-6 6-1 6-7 5-7 6-4. “Quando a fine match ci stringemmo la mano vidi che era distrutto. Era come se per la prima volta si fosse veramente sentito sopraffatto da me”. La verità è che dopo quella sconfitta all’interno di quel meccanismo perfetto che anima Bjorn Borg avviene un cedimento, qualcosa si incrina, irrimediabilmente. Ma per attendere il passaggio di consegne definitivo bisogna attendere Wimbledon 1981.

Quando un giudice di linea chiama fuori un servizio che solleva uno sbuffo di gesso, John McEnroe urla verso il giudice di sedia, lo scozzese Edward James, l’accusa che sarà destinata a diventare il titolo della sua autobiografia ufficiale: “Man, you cannot be serious!”. E’ il primo turno della 95ª edizione del torneo di Wimbledon e “Super brat”, sempre durante il match disputato contro Tom Gullikson, arriva ad apostrofare la schiera arbitrale come “la feccia del mondo”. I tabloid inglesi si scatenano ed un giornale riporta il parere di uno psicologo che definisce lo statunitense un “isterico estroverso”. Si scatena pure McEnroe che usurpa il regno di Bjorn Borg prima superandolo in finale a Wimbledon, poi scalzandolo dal primo posto del ranking mondiale. Il trionfo agli US Open, ottenuto proprio sconfiggendo in finale un Borg talmente furioso da disertare la premiazione, consacra John McEnroe come migliore giocatore del mondo. E’ l’inizio del suo regno, è la fine della rivalità con Borg, perché da quel giorno lo svedese inizia a maturare la decisione di abbandonare il tennis.

Il 1982 è un anno complesso per McEnroe, pur rimanendo in vetta al ranking per la maggior parte della stagione deve vedersela con un Jimmy Connors versione lusso e l’ascesa di un nuovo rivale, Ivan Lendl. Se il secondo sigillo a Wimbledon ottenuto nel 1983 prevalendo in finale sul modesto Chris Lewis non è stata una delle sue vittorie più memorabili, l’anno seguente McEnroe non solo trionfa lasciando per strada un solo set durante l’arco del torneo, giunto all’ultimo atto, umilia l’odiato Jimmy Connors battendolo 6-1 6-1 6-2. Una vittoria che, paradossalmente, non riuscirà mai a fare da contrappeso alla delusione rimediata appena un mese prima, al Roland Garros quando cede il passo ad Ivan Lendl dopo essersi trovato in vantaggio di due set a zero. Si tratta di una ferita mai sanata, che John McEnroe definisce: “la peggiore della mia vita, una sconfitta devastante. Quando ci ripenso non riesco ancora a dormire. Persino adesso è un’impresa commentare gli incontri dell’Open di Francia. Quando arrivo a Parigi per un paio di giorni ho la nausea, perché sono lì e torno con il pensiero a quella partita. A ciò che buttai via quel giorno, a come la mia vita sarebbe stata diversa se avessi vinto”. Il 1984 di John McEnroe rimane comunque la sua stagione migliore: dopo Wimbledon vince il suo quarto US Open ed il suo terzo Master chiudendo l’annata con un bilancio di 82 vittorie e 3 sconfitte. Nel 1985 McEnroe raggiunge dieci finali in tornei ATP vincendone otto, ma negli Slam non riesce a trovare il suo tennis migliore. Agli Australian Open perde ai quarti di finale in cinque set da Slobodan Zivonjinovic, al Roland Garros si arrende in semifinale a Mats Wilander ed a Wimbledon viene sovrastato 6-2 6-2 6-4 da Kevin Curren. Gli Us Open rappresentano per il John McEnroe un’occasione di riscatto. “In finale contro Lendl andai in vantaggio 5-2, poi all‘improvviso, dopo il cambio campo mi alzai, raggiunsi la mia parte del campo e avvertii una strana sensazione. Era come se il mio corpo fosse rimasto a sedere. Mi ero spento”. Quel match rappresenta una svolta decisiva, sia per la carriera di John McEnroe che per quella di Ivan Lendl. Se nel 1981 le sconfitte che John McEnroe infligge a Borg prima a Wimbledon poi agli Us Open provocano nella mente dello svedese uno squarcio devastante; la rimonta di Ivan Lendl al Roland Garros nel 1984 e quel 7-6 6-3 6-4 scandito sempre dal ceco agli US Open 1985, fanno sentire il geniale mancino “tagliato fuori. Mi aveva scalzato dalla vetta, il numero uno era lui”.

Nel 1986 John McEnroe si prende una sorta di anno sabbatico, si sposa con l’attrice Tatum O’Neil, diventa padre, nel 1987 ritorna senza però mai essere veramente competitivo, vuoi perché la schiena gli fa spesso male, vuoi perché il tennis ha preso irrimediabilmente un’altra direzione e lui non è più disposto ad adeguarsi a quella nuova dimensione così fisica, ‘robotica’. “Non è stato solo il talento, è stata anche la mia determinazione a portarmi dove ero arrivato. Poi quella ferocia è svanita”. Nel 1989 raggiunge la semifinale a Wimbledon, dove perde contro Stefan Edberg, l’anno dopo è semifinalista agli Us Open e in questo caso a superarlo è il futuro Re degli anni 90’, Pete Sampras. L’ultimo acuto avviene a Wimbledon, nel 1992, quando si issa fino alla semifinale in singolare, e insieme a Michael Stich vince il torneo in doppio.

Settantasette titoli ATP tra cui sette prove del Grande Slam e tre Master. In doppio di successi ne ha totalizzati settantuno: dieci di essi sono Slam; nove nella categoria maschile ed uno nel misto. Addirittura sette sono i trionfi al Master, tutti consecutivi e tutti insieme a Peter Fleming, come del resto la maggior parte dei titoli di specialità. “Fin dall’infanzia con Peter Fleming si instaurò un legame molto forte. Siamo stati compagni di doppio per più di dieci anni, ci completavamo a vicenda”, ricorda John McEnroe nella sua biografia. Accadde però un episodio che “rovina tutto”. Dopo aver sconfitto Yannick Noah ed Henri Leconte nella finale di Coppa Davis nel 1982, un giornalista chiese a Fleming quale fosse la più grande coppia nella storia del doppio e lui rispose “John McEnroe e un tennista qualsiasi”. Forse Peter Fleming ha sempre avuto la sensazione di vivere nell’ombra del leggendario compagno, o forse come ammette John: “Non ho mai potuto sopportare di cedere il passo a qualcuno di cui ero amico e nonostante Peter non sia mai stato un giocatore di alta classifica, lui possedeva doti che io non avevo, come portare empaticamente il pubblico dalla sua parte”. Piccole gelosie, tanti dissapori e altrettante incomprensioni finirono con il separare quello che è stato probabilmente il doppio più forte di sempre.

Dopo il divorzio con Tatum O’Neil, l’ex ‘moccioso’ del tennis vive con la sua seconda moglie, Patty Smyth e con sei figli, tre avuti dal primo matrimonio, due dalla seconda consorte, e uno che Patty ha avuto dal precedente marito. A volte capita che torni ad essere ‘the genius’ e prenda la racchetta in mano per partecipare a qualche torneo senior o esibizione. Ora, ufficialmente, è però un commentatore sportivo per la BBC che si diletta a suonare la chitarra ben figurando quando viene invitato a salire sul palco durante concerti, trasmissioni o eventi benefici. Lui e la musica sono uniti da un legame di lunga data e forse non è un caso che Chrissie Hyde, la cantante dei Pretenders, abbia inserito in un suo noto brano, “Pack it up” la famosissima frase urlata da John McEnroe allo scandalizzato pubblico londinese: “You are the pits of the world!”; siete la feccia del mondo”. Era il 1981, ma John McEnroe immortale lo era già.

Fa un certo effetto leggere una considerazione riportata da John McEnroe nella sua biografia: “Quando raggiungi la vetta da giovanissimo poi una parte di te cerca costantemente di rivivere quelle emozioni travolgenti. Questo è il motivo per cui molti atleti finiscono male. Non riescono più a trovare quell’euforia assoluta ed avvertono un terribile vuoto. La mia vita al contrario, è piena di cose positive, lo è sempre di più, ma per quanto sia fantastica, a volte è difficile dimenticare quelle vittorie esaltanti. In quei momenti devo ricordare a me stesso che non avevo nessuno con cui condividerle. E ripenso a quanto fredda e solitaria fosse la vetta della montagna”.

Dice sul serio John McEnroe. Così come ‘dicono sul serio’ i reduci di quel mitico periodo, quello tra la fine degli anni 70 e il tramonto degli anni 80’, quando ripensano a quelle sfide crudeli, estenuanti, a quegli odi viscerali, esagerati, forse folli. Come possono i tennisti moderni, così ‘politicamente corretti’, regalare le scariche di adrenalina sperimentate con John McEnroe; con Bjorn Borg, lo svedese di ghiaccio; con Jimmy Connors, l’antipatico che come un invasato fomentava le folle; con Ivan Lendl, il profugo che ha osato usurpare il loro regno? E poi, via, via fino ad arrivare a Wilander, a Becker ad Edberg… Certo ora c’è Roger Federer, l’uomo dei record, Mr perfect; c’è Rafael Nadal, il Re della terra che ha superato persino Borg a Parigi; c’è Novak Djokovic, la macchina perfetta. Eppure… eppure se parliamo con i reduci di quegli anni magici, ci diranno che non è la stessa cosa.

Ho un ricordo appannato degli US Open 1992. Non tanto riguardo al torneo: ricordo la vittoria di Ivan Lendl al quinto set contro Boris Becker e la sua successiva sconfitta per 7-6 al quinto contro Stefan Edberg; che poi sarebbe prevalso in finale su Pete Sampras. Ho ben presente pure che John McEnroe perse contro Jim Courier, agli ottavi di finale. Il ricordo appannato riguarda una frase che disse Gianni Clerici. Ero una ragazzina, tifavo per Ivan Lendl e John McEnroe non è che mi stesse tanto simpatico. Ma Gianni Clerici disse qualcosa tipo “ho sempre saputo che il giorno in cui John McEnroe avrebbe giocato la sua ultima partita un pezzo del mio cuore si sarebbe spento per sempre”. Qualcosa di simile. Non so perché non riesco a ricordare precisamente cosa disse Clerici. Ricordo però che lo disse con un tono di voce che mi commosse. Il suo dolore era sincero. E il silenzio che seguì, fu qualcosa di talmente profondo da indurmi ad afferrare il telecomando e ad alzare il volume. Ma non era un problema dell’audio. Gianni Clerici rimase in silenzio e fu come se sopra New York fosse calato un vuoto incolmabile. Sono passati ventuno anni. John McEnroe oggi compie 54 anni. Quel vuoto incolmabile però, resiste ancora.

“So che giocare contro di me poteva essere un’esperienza frustrante, ma ero convinto che il mio modo di giocare fosse avvincente da guardare: credo che anche i miei avversari migliorassero il loro stile, quando erano alle prese con me. Essere un counter puncher richiede una mentalità diversa. Wilander e Borg, due maestri in quest’arte, erano sempre ad attendere la tua mossa successiva, ti aspettavano al varco come se dicessero lo so fare meglio di te.

Io preferivo prendere l’iniziativa: giocare d’anticipo, agire e vedere se gli avversari erano in grado di reagire ai miei attacchi. Li provocavo: secondo me è una strategia molto più interessante. O si vince o si perde. Non c’è bisogno di aggiungere che ho sempre preferito vincere.”

Il più creativo, talentuoso, egocentrico, irascibile tennista di tutti i tempi. Mancino, il genio del serve and volley, fascia rossa e capelli ricci, impossibile dimenticarne la classe, gli eccessi e la spettacolarità del gioco. McEnroe si impone grazie ai colpi imprevedibili, alla grinta, all’anticipo sulla palla, alla sensibilità del tocco – memorabili le smorzate e le rotazioni velenose –, al dritto piatto, allo slice mancino del servizio. La sua personalità e il suo gioco oscurano e intimoriscono gli avversari. McEnroe, soprannominato “The Genius”, sul campo perde spesso la pazienza, contesta le decisioni arbitrali, fa a pezzi le racchette, lancia insulti ai giudici di linea e di sedia, a spettatori a caso tra il pubblico, ai raccattapalle, a un ciuffo dell’erba di Wimbledon, a una nuvola passeggera mentre sta per battere il servizio, a sé stesso. La sua celebre frase “You cannot be serious” (“Non stai dicendo sul serio”) rivolta a un arbitro diventa il titolo della sua autobiografia. Conquista sette titoli del Grande Slam, quattro Us Open e tre Wimbledon, ed è il numero uno del mondo per quattro anni consecutivi, dal 1981 al 1984. Terminata la carriera, rimane nel mondo del tennis come commentatore degli incontri per Nbc e Cbs negli Usa e per la Bbc nel Regno Unito e come allenatore della squadra americana di Coppa Davis. Padre di sei bambini, appassionato di musica rock e amante dell’arte, ha aperto una prestigiosa galleria d’arte a New York nel quartiere di Soho.

John McEnroe non era tanto alto, eppure si può ragionevolmente affermare che sia stato il miglior giocatore di serve and volley di tutti i tempi; ma d’altronde, McEnroe era un’eccezione rispetto a tutti o quasi gli schemi di prevedibilità esistenti. Al suo apice (diciamo dal 1980 al 1984) è stato il più grande tennista di sempre – e il più dotato, il più bello, il più tormentato: un genio. Per me, guardare McEnroe che indossa una giacca blu in sintetico e fa quelle ignobili telecronache colorite, zeppe di luoghi comuni idioti, è come guardare Faulkner che fa uno spot pubblicitario per una catena di negozi di abbigliamento.

In merito al genio di McEnroe sono confortato dall’opinione di Gilles Deleuze, il quale una volta si esercitò nell’ekphrasis di un suo tipico gesto: “Una specie di aristocratico metà egiziano metà russo… ha inventato un colpo che consiste nel deporre la palla, una cosa curiosa, non la colpisce nemmeno, la depone”. Ecco, al di là degli aspetti squisitamente tecnici (il servizio a catapulta, tutto in torsione; la risposta in chip and charge; il metodico, ma ogni volta diverso, serve and volley), è in questa gestualità rituale che consiste il suo genio. Delicato ma micidiale, virtuosistico ma infallibile. Genio non è sregolatezza: al contrario è fondare nuove regole. Di geni autentici il tennis ne ha conosciuti uno a decennio. McEnroe è gli anni Ottanta, Pete Sampras i Novanta, Roger Federer il decennio presente. Se in Mac si incarnanp gli anni Ottanta, suo bacino di coltura sono però i Settanta (esordì nel climaterico ’77, quando a Wimbledon arrivò in semifinale partendo – mai accaduto prima – dalle qualificazioni). Infatti McEnroe fu sì aristocratico, come vuole il filosofo; ma, anche, genuinamente punk. Non perché strimpellasse ogni tanto la Stratocaster, o perché la sua icona riccioluta mettesse a rumore l’All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Ma per l’unione di talento impareggiabile e altrettanto sovrana maleducazione. Un’interpretazione buonista vuole che la proverbiale scorrettezza di McEnroe fosse preterintenzionale: che la sua rabbia folle, ai limiti dell’epilessia, fosse dovuta al fatto che non potesse ammettere limiti alla propria infallibilità. No: bisogna avere l’onestà di ammettere che McEnroe fosse insieme sublime e scorretto, angelo e demonio. Non si contano gli incontri nei quali un avversario in vantaggio, scosso da un Vietnam di recriminazioni, abbia finito per arrendersi indecorosamente a Mac.

Ep 6 Hur ska jag träna mig själv?

“I encourage those that I’m training to consider training the way a professional athlete would. The professional athlete does not focus on the outcome.  Outcome based training is an anachronism.  The pro athlete uses performance based training.

We are consumed by outcomes; how many, how much,  how fast? vs. ‘how well?’

When we are consumed by the outcome it will sabotage our ability to perform.

Slow down and perform the perfect repetition.  Be introspective. Self coach and self critique.  The probability of achieving the outcome you desire will increase once you let go of the need to have it.

If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.”

Välkommen till Verkanpodden, din siktbild i etern, rakt från min hjärna till dina öronhål.

Den inledande monologen levererades av Patrick McNamara, en pensionerad sergeant major från SFOD-DELTA, mer känt som deltaforce. Jag kommer att lägga diverse länkar till material med honom i podden beskrivning och jag rekommenderar varmt att titta närmare på några av hans budskap, men jag tyckte att just det där stycket var en passande brygga in i veckans ämne, nämligen att träna sig själv.

Jag ska vara tydlig dock och leverera slutklämmen först:

Ingen bryr sig om dina ursäkter och undanflykter. Om ditt jobb på något sätt går ut på att bära skjutvapen eller lära andra att använda skjutvapen så är det ditt ansvar att vara så dödlig som du rimligtvis kan med ditt vapen och för att nå dit behöver du regelbundet träna med det. Ingen bryr sig om du är motiverad eller inte, du måste drivas av disciplin innan du drivs av motivation.

Vi måste börja med att prata om mindset, kultur och förväntningar.

Om vi börjar bakifrån med förväntningar så förväntas en yrkesofficer inte bara att kunna skjuta utan att även kunna lära andra hur man skjuter. Detta är inte bara felaktigt utan direkt skadligt för yrkeskårens förmåga med eldhandvapen, anledningen till det är att befäl som egentligen inte är kvalificerade hamnar på skjutbanan med uppgiften att lära rekryter att skjuta. Vi har alla ett ansvar att avveckla den här förväntningen genom att helt enkelt anmäla till den som ställer uppgiften att det inte är rimligt och att du behöver antingen ett erfaret biträde eller resurser till att öva upp din egen förmåga.

Vi måste också tillsammans skapa en kultur där det inte bara är normalt utan att det till och med förväntas att vi med jämna intervall ska vara nere på skjutbanorna för att träna oss själva. Vi är generellt sett ganska duktiga på att försöka få till fysisk träning på arbetstid och att ta ut i alla fall en del av de tre timmar i veckan som vi förväntas träna, vilket leder oss in på mindset - du behöver se träning med ditt skjutvapen som något som är precis lika viktigt som att ta den där löpturen eller det där gympasset.

Om en medarbetare inte har ett träningsmindset och kulturen på arbetsplatsen aldrig bäddar för att träna på arbetstid så kan jag inte heller förvänta mig att medarbetaren ska klara sitt fälttest. Precis samma tänk kan appliceras på träning med våra skjutvapen.

Precis som i styrketräning eller konditionsträning så underlättar motivation men där motivationen tryter måste disciplinen ta vid - Det är inte alltid roligt att sticka ut på elljusspåret men den disciplinerade gör det ändå. Det är inte alltid roligt att stå i källaren och torrdra med pistolen eller nöta omladdning med automatkarbinen eller gå fram och och tillbaka för att klistra tavlan men vill man öka sin personliga färdighet eller sänka sin miltid så måste man vara beredd att göra saker fast att det inte alltid är roligt.

Men hur ska jag gå till väga? Hur ska jag träna?

Vi börjar med att titta på hur jag kan tänka kring målsättningar och sedan dela in dem i tre kategorier med ord lånade från engelskan:

Outcome, performance och process.

I översättning kan vi kalla dem slutmål, prestationsmål och processmål där prestationsmålsättningen är där du bör fokusera huvuddelen av din energi.

Jag har svårt att hitta lämpliga svenska termer, men slutmålet eller Outcome kan vara tex att bli bäst i befälslaget eller plutonen på kompetensprovet. Det är inte ett orimligt mål i sig men problemet med att ha det som enda målsättning är att du inte kan påverka hur dina konkurrenter skjuter. Så ett klokare sätt att lägga upp slutmålet är att formulera det som ”på kompetensprovet ska jag prestera träffkvoten 2,0” och om det räcker till att bli bäst så är det bra, räcker det inte så har du i alla fall mött din egen målsättning.

Prestationsmålsättningarna eller dina performance goals fungerar som ett slags delmål där du tränar de komponenter som behöver sättas ihop till en helhet för att nå slutmålet, det kan vara till exempel att korta ned tiden från startsignal till första träff i liggande, att göra omladdningen smartare eller att inte tappa några poäng.

Processmålsättningarna blir då vad du måste göra för att faktiskt nå dina prestationsmålsättningar, tex torrträna två gånger i veckan, genomföra ett skjutpass varannan vecka där du själv får träna och så vidare.

Identifiera vart du vill nå, det vill säga vad ditt tänkta slutmål är, bryt sedan ner det till delmål i form av prestationsmål och processmål.

För att träna just skjutteknik så brukar två saker vara gränssättande:

Tillgänglig tid och tillgång till skjutbanor.

Tillgänglig tid handlar till stor del om hur du själv prioriterar och som ett sidospår angående mindes där - prova att sluta säga ”jag har inte tid” utan säg istället ”det är inte en prioritet”. Med det sagt så tar ett skjutpass helt enkelt längre tid än att gå ner på gymmet eller dra ut i löpspåret. Ammunition ska hämtas, vapen ska låsas ut, mål ska dukas et cetera vilket gör att en timmes effektiv skjuttid snabbt kan kosta 2-3 timmar i för- och efterberedelser.. och det förutsätter att det ens finns utrymme på skjutbanorna för egen träning.

Som tur är så går det alldeles utmärkt att avsevärt öka sin egen förmåga utan att avlossa ett enda skott genom att helt enkelt torrträna.

Torrträning kan göras hur enkelt eller hur komplicerat som helst, men i all enkelhet går det ut på att träna sin förmåga att så snart som möjligt få tillräcklig siktbild och att göra en tillräckligt bra avfyring och den utrustning du behöver är ditt vapen, någon typ av mål och en skjuttimer.

Ett enkelt exempel skulle tex vara att ta plats i lämpligt utrymme och på en lämplig vägg sätta upp någon slags mål. Det kan vara en liten postit-lapp, tejpbit eller om man känner sig lite fancy en bild på en helfigur som man skriver ut i reducerad skala.

Ställ dig i grundställning, sätt timern till ”random” och starta den. På startsignalen går du upp i anläggning och så snart du tycker att du har tillräckligt bra siktbild för att få en träff i målytan du satt upp så trycker du av.

För att utveckla detta ytterligare och faktiskt börja mäta om du blir bättre så börjar du använda partider, dvs att timern ställs in för att ge ett startpip och ett slutpip. För den här övningen så kanske en rimligt partid att starta med är 2 sekunder, när du känner att du konsekvent är innanför den partiden så sänker du till 1,8 sekunder. När du konsekvent är innanför den partiden så sänker du igen och så vidare.

Härifrån är det nästan bara fantasin som sätter gränserna, till exempel att sätta upp flera mål i olika storlekar för att öva båda målväxling och att variera hur fin siktbild och hur fin avfyring som behövs.

Vill man verkligen fördjupa sig så har tvsssm på instagram satt ihop en torrtränings-ÖFT man kan kika i, jag lägger en länk i beskrivningen.

När du sedan väl får möjlighet att skjuta skarpt, se till att faktiskt träna och inte bara skjuta. Om du tex i torrträningen har tränat ner dig till 1,5 sekunder så gör samma sak skarpt för att verifiera att du faktiskt är så snabb även på skjutbanan och gå igenom de prestationsmål du satt upp för dig själv. Ha en plan och följ planen! Titta alltid efter sätt att bli bättre, låt en kamrat filma dig i slow motion och analysera dina genomföranden för att hitta svaga punkter, lägg till dessa punkter i dina prestationsmål och fokusera på dem under nästa torrträningspass.

I övrigt handlar det om att ta alla tillfällen som finns till träning. Står du på skjutbanan som instruktör eller som biträde - ha alltid ditt vapen med dig och på dig. Skjuter truppen i stridsutrustning så är det rimligt att även du har din stridsutrustning på dig och visa så mycket du bara kan! Det är gratis träning och god instruktörssed och även om du inte nailar varje genomförande så kommer du kunna äga dina misstag och använda dem som lärdomar till truppen.

Vill du verkligen ta det till nästa nivå och bli riktigt äckligt jedi-duktig på att skjuta så finns det bara ett sätt - du behöver egna vapen och du behöver tävla. Du behöver komma ur den komfortabla bubblan där du kanske är bäst på plutonen och istället mäta dig mot de som är bättre och det görs bäst på tävlingsarenan. Det här är precis som vilket idrott som helst - den som överlägset vinner garnisonsmästerskapen i terränglöpning tränar troligtvis mer än de tre timmar i veckan som myndigheten betalar för och har du intresset, viljan och drivet att verkligen bli bra så behöver du skjuta även på fritiden. Den rimligaste skytteformen att engagera sig i är dynamiskt skytte eller IPSC som det heter, men att tävla förtjänar ett helt eget avsnitt.

Det här blev ett ovanligt långt samtal men det är ett ganska stort ämne och förhoppningsvis har jag gett dig något att fundera på kring träning.

Okokokokok. So there’s a character I’ve been working on, his name is Wesley (Wes for short), and, since I try to base my characters’ backstories on fairy tales, he’s a bit of a Rumplestiltskin fellow. I have another character in the early stages of development that he manipulates like Rumplestiltskin does the miller’s daughter in the fairy tale, but she’s smarter than he realizes and eventually bests him. Unfortunately for her, that only intrigues him more… that definitely checks off enemies to lovers. They’re very new to the EmCU but I already love them and can tell they’ll be QUITE a team. Powerful egos are definitely at play here, and Polaris has to balance them all and get them to work as a team.

L'episodio è stato denunciato giorni fa dalla Licra (la Ligue internationale contre le racisme et l'antisémitisme, per una volta impegnata in una buona causa), che ha rilanciato il documento diffuso dall'account Twitter, ora soppresso, Globule Noir.

Si tratta di un elenco, con tanto di nomi, cognomi e indirizzi, delle dottoresse nere della regione dell'Île-de-France. Sempre la Licra, che ha parlato di «follia identitaria», ha diffuso un altro tweet di Globule Noir in su un annuncio per la ricerca di un'infermiera a domicilio «razzizzata» (racisée), parola che nella neolingua sta a indicare una persona non bianca. Certo, si tratta pur sempre dell'iniziativa di un anonimo account Twitter, ma la cosa è inquietante perché riguarda un fenomeno più generale, quello che in Francia chiamano del «comunitarismo», cioè della tendenza a scomporre la società in tante enclavi etno-religiose portatrici di specifiche esigenze.

Di più: qui si tratta della versione «separatista» del comunitarismo, ovvero di quella visione per cui i neri devono stare solo con i neri, i gialli solo con i gialli, i bianchi... no, loro non possono farlo, pena l'accusa di razzismo. Fatto sta che a partire dall'iniziativa di Globule Noir è nato un vivace dibattito sull'argomento, che ha coinvolto le massime autorità sanitarie. A cominciare dal ministro della Salute, Olivier Véran, che in una nota si è detto «scioccato».

L'Ordine dei medici ha spiegato che tali liste «sono contrarie alla non discriminazione sancita dall'articolo 7 del codice deontologico, ai valori fondamentali dell'umanismo medico e alle fondamenta della Repubblica e dei suoi valori laici». Patrick Chamboredon, presidente dell'Ordine nazionale degli infermieri, rilancia: «Tutto ciò non corrisponde al codice della sanità pubblica e all'etica e alla deontologia dei professionisti della salute». Tanta fermezza, però, non appare unanime.

Il Sindacato dei giovani medici generalisti, per bocca del suo presidente Benoît Blaes, ha criticato «le reazioni difensive e reazionarie del corpo medico. Quello che è scandaloso è che ci sia del razzismo nella sanità e che esso persista». Negli stessi giorni in cui scoppiava la polemica, pur senza farvi esplicito riferimento, la medesima sigla sindacale faceva uscire un comunicato in cui spiegava, ricerche alla mano, che «l'impatto del razzismo sulla sanità non è oggetto di dibattito, è una realtà scientifica documentata». Anche fra i media progressisti è scattata la gara a chi giustificava le liste razziali nei modi più creativi.

France info ha intervistato Myriam, la donna che avrebbe per prima redatto la lista poi rilanciata da Globule Noir. Un elenco, spiega, pensato all'inizio solo per se stessa: «Volevo una dottoressa donna e in più una donna che mi somigliasse, cioè una nera, per sentirmi più a mio agio». Da qui la lista che, spiega Myriam, «non è fatta per dividere le persone» ma solo «per dare loro una scelta».

France culture, invece, ha intervistato dei pazienti in forma anonima che hanno raccontato le loro disavventure mediche: Justine ha avuto per esempio un'esperienza «lesbofoba», mentre Elena, che fa la sex worker, lamenta di essere costretta a nascondere «l'80% della mia vita ai medici per non subire il loro giudizio» ed Erwan ha cercato invano uno psichiatra «razzizzato» e benevolo verso le persone trans.

Cosa c'entri il fatto di aver incontrato un medico cafone con il colore della sua pelle non è chiaro. Ma resta soprattutto un dubbio: perché l'argomento «mi sento più a mio agio con le persone come me» ha legittimità solo se pronunciato da chi ha la pelle scura?

Yoga Journal: You were running a successful PR business when you started OMNoire. What made you want to be a yoga teacher and retreat leader? Christina Rice: I attended yoga teacher training because I wanted to go deeper into my practice. I actually wasn’t sure if I wanted to teach, because I was afraid of public speaking! But by the third week, I thought, I’m going to teach. There were very few people of color in my classes, and once I started teaching, a lot of black women would reach out to ask for my class schedule. Women of color felt more comfortable being taught by a woman of color. That’s where the idea of OMNoire came from.

YJ: That was at the start of 2016. How did you get OMNoire up and running—and gain such popularity—in such a short amount of time? CR: The lack of representation for people of color in the yoga and wellness space means we are really hungry for it. That’s where OMNoire’s success and growth have come from. I started it as a simple social media page to highlight women of color practicing wellness in different cities. I came up with the name, started the Instagram account, and attracted a lot of followers right out of the gate. In November 2016, someone approached me about leading a wellness retreat, which I officially announced in March of the following year—and OMNoire as we know it was born.

YJ: What dream destination did you choose for your first retreat? CR: Grenada, and it was our largest retreat to date! More than 50 women attended from all over the world—the UK, US, Canada, and Nigeria.

YJ: Why Grenada? CR: I took my first solo trip there in September 2015, three weeks before I started my 10-week yoga teacher training. There’s an amazing underwater sculpture park there. You can snorkel it, but I wanted to get over my fear of open bodies of water. So while I was there, I took my first scuba diving lesson. Many of our fears are rooted in physical actions or things: heights, swimming, standing or speaking in front of large crowds. If we conquer those types of fears through adventure—hiking up mountains, scuba diving, etc.—we can conquer anything.

When I did my first dive, in an extremely deep part of the ocean, I was terrified. I panicked at around 10 feet and shot back up to the surface. I took out my regulator—which you’re not supposed to do—and accidentally took in some water. So there I am, basically choking, trying to catch my breath, and I used my practice. I paused, taking deep breaths and quietly speaking confidence in myself, until I was ready to try again. That day I ended up doing two successful dives for a total of 89 minutes under water. Thanks to my yoga and meditation practice, I’ve continued to grow and stretch over the years. I’ve found my happy place internally—both under water and above ground.

For this, Grenada will always carry a special place in my heart, and it was an easy choice to host our first retreat there. Two years after my first dive—four days before the ladies arrived for the very first OMNoire retreat— I received my scuba certification with the same Grenada-based dive team I took my first dive with.

YJ: Back in January, we kicked off a conversation about new leadership in yoga. Since then, conquering fears has come up quite a bit. Do you consider yourself a leader in the evolving yoga space? CR: It wasn’t until recently that someone told me I was a leader and I thought, Oh—I guess I am! Since then, I’ve embraced that title and responsibility. At OMNoire, we’re clear and direct with our messaging: You don’t have to fit in a certain box. Our work with the women in our community is helping them discover their own wellness journey, and to own it, and to be leaders themselves.

I consider it one of my biggest responsibilities to be transparent about my own journey. Anyone who follows me on social knows that I’m very transparent—about wins, losses, struggles, fears, and surviving a toxic relationship that brought me to yoga and OMNoire. It’s a leader’s responsibility to allow people in their particular community to understand that they don’t have to be perfect.

Funkmaster Flex Vs. DJ Clue is the DJ Battle the Culture Needs

Hot 97 or Power 105.1? Which seminal hip-hop/R&B New York radio station you pledge allegiance to is bound to provoke heated debates.

DJ Funkmaster Flex and DJ Clue—the de-facto voices of Hot 97 and Power 105.1 FM respectively—have recently turned up the heat on their long-standing feud over who is the number one DJ in New York, period. But this time, the fight is not just for radio supremacy. On March 8th, Bronx-bred super-producer Swizz Beatz stoked the flames for a DJ battle between Flex and Clue to settle their longstanding rivalry for once and for all.

Funkmaster Flex and DJ Clue have been rivals on the radio, on the mixtape circuit, and in nightclubs. They both are icons for DJ culture, which is why Hot 97 and Power 105.1 have elevated them as their primetime DJ talent. Their rivalry has escalated over the years, and the battle proposed by Swizz could finally be their tipping point. Whether or not Flex and Clue actually decide to go into combat, it is no doubt as important as previous face-offs between Nas vs. Jay Z, Kanye West vs. 50 Cent, or Kendrick vs. Drake. Flex and Clue have their own strengths and weaknesses as hip-hop DJs, and since there aren't any set terms for this type of DJ battle—opponents are judged on everything from their technical skills to their showmanship appeal—it's impossible to predict who would win. Still, it's a given that DJs are competitive, and a battle could raise the bar for the art of DJing.

On that night in March, while at a private dinner inside of what looks like a fancy car dealership, Swizz put Clue on the spot in an Instagram video, pressuring him to battle Flex and "earn that crown back." Also present were rapper Fabolous, A&R/photographer Lenny Santiago, and singer/producer Ryan Leslie, who stirred the pot by laughing at Swizz's comments. "Flex is gonna try to finish you," said Swizz. Cue Flex writing in the comments section: "He don't want none of me on that Fucking set BRUH!" Warning shots fired?

Since then, Flex and Swizz have repeatedly tried to bait Clue, both posting Instagram clips of Flex scratching the "earn that crown back" taunt over the instrumental to Biggie's "Who Shot Ya?", as if to suggest that he's scared. Yet Clue, the self-proclaimed "Michael Jordan of Mixtapes," maintained a zen master's poise; he assured fans on Instagram last month that he has exclusives that can outshine Flex's turntable skills. (Flex, Swizz, and Clue did not return THUMP's multiple requests for comment.)

A week before Swizz put Clue on the spot, Swizzy had engaged in a high-profile beat battle against Just Blaze at an undisclosed location in NYC, and arguably won by playing an unreleased Jay Z, Jadakiss, Nas, DMX collaboration in a "drop the mic" moment. Meanwhile, apparently Pharrell and Timbaland are talking about going at it in their own beat battle.

For his match with Clue, Flex has suggested playing exclusive for exclusive, DJ skills for DJ skills. Both artists have an impressive discography of songs, mixtapes, and studio albums spanning generations of hip-hop and R&B. Clue has a nice rep merging gritty rappers with beloved pop stars; he produced Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (Remix) featuring Jadakiss and Styles P. Flex has a slight edge with reggae and dancehall collaborations, so the idea of Flex playing dub plates roasting Clue are probable.

According to a recent post on a fan's Instagram, Clue has denounced back-spinning songs as irrelevant to this brewing battle. Yet, there is no denying that two turntables and a mixer are the tools of the trade, and rewinding a record manually or scratching samples lies at the core of hip-hop. Taking two songs and looping the instrumental break to hype up the party is the great invention by hip-hop's founding fathers Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa, who built the foundation for club DJs.

When radio DJs go at it, they are empowered by the almighty microphone to strike down with furious anger from the mountaintops.

Finalists in the Disco Mix Club (DMC) World Championship are given six minutes to showcase their talent, no sound effects. Clue and Flex both use a bomb—a seven-second explosion sample that sounds like the ground is erupting from under you—as their signature drop. Flex introduced the atomic bomb first, and in the beginning, reserved as a signpost that he was going to break a major rap record live on Hot 97—Nas "Hate Me Now" or Fat Joe "My Lifestyle" for example. The impact of the bomb is now oversaturated from Flex using it as a point of emphasis during his on-air rants, and Clue co-opting it. Clue's current arsenal of drops ranges from a sample of his signature laugh to his catchphrase "Do Remember." When he shouts his alias "ClueManatti," it rings through like a rapid fire of syllables, long before "G-G-G-Unit" was on the tip of the rap world's tongue.

Then there is the question of showmanship—the scratching, beat-juggling technical DJ skills that defines the DJ's pedigree. When Flex scratches, his style is recognizable—he masterfully rubs the records, yet he doesn't lean heavily on the crossfader to cut smaller pieces of the song. He hits with power instead of precision. On the other hand, Clue's scratching and mixing are questionable, and he rarely does it.

Clue is from Queens, Flex is from The Bronx; their battle is like the DJ version of Coke vs. Pepsi, Mets vs. Yankees, or MC Shan vs. KRS-One. But Clue and Flex's feud actually most vividly recalls the one between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, and the gloves have been off long before Swizz became the quasi-Don King. Ali and Frazier were friends before they became bitter rivals, just like how the DJs were on somewhat respectful terms in the 90s, when Clue hosted his own weekly show, "The Monday Night Mixtape" on Hot 97, where both he and Flex worked at the time. Clue even shouted out Flex, plus a handful of Hot 97 staff, on his "Winter War Mixtape" in '95. (Clue left Hot 97 in 2006.)

Five years ago, Funkmaster Flex aired out Clue, sending shots at the Power 105.1 DJ over who rules the NYC airwaves after Flex scooped him on the Nicki Minaj, Cam'Ron & 2 Chainz collab, "Beez In the Trap." "I see this guy talking tough last night… by the way, the Mets they win sometimes too; two weeks out of 52," said Flex live on the radio. He never calls out Clue by name, but it's obvious who he is referring to. A few days later, Clue tweeted and responded with a few scathing insults for Flex on air, calling him a hoe and a clown, and a "number 2 … worrying about what I'm doing." He also claimed Flex plays parties for free—a knock on a DJ who is synonymous with the dynasty of hip-hop nightlife in the 90s.

Besides Clue and Flex going at it, there is no lack of shots at Flex thrown from Charlamange Tha God, or Peter Rosenberg at The Breakfast Club—no one is safe, anybody gets it. But when radio DJs go at it, they are empowered by the almighty microphone to strike down with great vengeance and furious anger from the mountaintops.

A rivalry of a similar scale happened in the early 80s when the late-great Frankie Crocker, program director for WBLS—the first Black-owned New York radio station—was up against Barry Mayo, the general manager for WRKS 98.7 KISS FM. Crocker introduced hip-hop music onto the airwaves on a station known for black adult contemporary R&B music, and hired the late DJ Mr. Magic from WHBI to play on BLS. Not to be outdone, Mayo, hired DJ Red Alert and Chuck Chillout to challenge KISS FM. (Fun fact: Flex used to carry Chuck's records back in the day.)

So, can anyone be friends? Former Hot 97 host-turned-Power 105.1 host DJ Envy told Vlad TV in 2012 about the beef between the stations: "There is no talking to your enemy, no shaking hands with your enemy, or DJing a party with your enemy." Despite the entrenched animosity between Flex and Clue, it is competition at the end of the day, akin to a reality TV drama on your car stereo.

But after all the talk, where is the action? It's been over one month since Clue was called out by Swizz on Instagram, but a date still hasn't been set for this brewing showdown—or any of the other dream battles by Swizz. The main display of DJ talent we've seen Flex associated with is Turntable Tuesday—a weekly showcase on Hot 97 in which Flex invites guest DJs like Rob Swift, Scram Jones, and most recently, Just Blaze, to get busy on the 1s and 2s. During the show, Flex stands by on camera, smiling at the artful display of turntablism (real DJing).

As great as all the guests are, they are the undercard. Flex vs. Clue is the main event we're waiting for. A bridge between the two DJs could help end the rift between them, despite what DJ Envy said about how there is no crossing of lines between the station's personalities. But just like an actual bridge, it is a massive undertaking, and like most construction in New York, you can't hold your breath on a quick completion.

Five Ghanaians you must watch in 2020/21

Whilst most of the games will be played behind closed doors, that does mean access to televised and streamed events should be easier than ever before. With that in mind, we've picked out five Ghanaians you must watch in 2020/21. Number 5. Patrick Twumasi Twumasi has been somewhat of a journeyman since leaving RB Ghana back in 2012 with his career taking him to five different countries already. The latest spell was a loan move at Turkish Super Lig club Gaziantep where he joined fellow Ghanaians Chibsah Raman and Tetteh Abdul-Aziz. Even though it’s not a very mainstream league, Twumasi had quite the impact there too with an impressive goal involvement every 141 minutes, which was made up of six goals and five assists across 26 appearances. It means he was their second most influential attacking talent behind Nigerian striker Kayode Olarenwaju. Meanwhile, back in Spain, his parent club - Alaves - narrowly escaped relegation with one of the league’s most toothless attacks. Transfer rumours over a move to Bundesliga 2 outfit Hannover 96 have been circulating. A move there wouldn't be disastrous with the club expected to compete for promotion to the top tier but Alaves could surely do a lot worse.   Number 4. Kwadwo Asamoah 31-year-old Asamoah has endured a tough year with Inter. The team have impressed under the tutelage of Antonio Conte but winger come wing back Asamoah has only managed 11 appearances. He still has 12 months to run on his contract that was penned back in 2018 when he moved from Juventus but everything points to him moving on this window. That's exactly why he's one of our five Ghanaians you must watch in 2020/21. Last season, Asamoah made 42 appearances with most of them starts. He boasted a passing accuracy of 89% in Serie A with 32 of them defined as key passes i.e. those that create a scoring opportunity. On top of that he completed 62% of his attempted dribbles. I guess what I'm getting at is that he's far from past it with his style simply not what Conte is after. Thankfully, it looks like there will be takers for his signature. A move to Marseille has been muted along with interest from Serie B Champions Benevento. Let's look forward to Asamoah impressing us some more in the twilight of his career. Number 3. Mohammed Kudus 20-year-old Kudus has earned himself a move to a more prominent European club this season having transferred from Danish outfit Nordsjaelland to Dutch giants Ajax for a fee of £8m. It's early days but he's impressed in pre-season fixtures. Given the club have lost Hakim Ziyech already with David Neres tipped to follow there will be room for a creative influence. Kudus managed a goal involvement every 167 minutes last season with 11 goals and a solitary assist from 22 starts and three sub appearances so it's extremely plausible that coach Erik ten Hag picks him in his first team squad from the off. The attacking midfielder was rumoured to have been interesting Everton but a step to the Eredivise feels like a better move for his long term development and, if he excels at the Johan Cruyff Arena then a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues will come in time. Number 2. Mohammed Salisu Salisu serves as an example to everyone. His first taste of football was with Kusami Barcelona Babies side before moving on to join the African Talent Academy. It was there where he was spotted and jumped to Europe with Real Valladolid. On his arrival in Spain, he was only 18-years-old and had to make do with youth and reserve football for a while before making his first senior appearances in last year’s Copa Del Rey - Spain's domestic cup competition. 180 minutes across the two-legged tie with Getafe proved his only game time but 2019/20 was very different. Salisu started the season at centre back and remained a near constant in the team that finished 13th. He impressed at the heart of defence winning 61% of headers and 76% of tackles. It earned him attention from bigger clubs. Manchester United were linked but it was another Premier League team that landed his signature. He'll be pulling on the red and white stripes of Southampton in the new season. He'll be a huge success too. Number 1. Thomas Partey First things first, who knows where Partey will be playing his football in a few weeks time? Not me. I also happen to know, he'll be oozing quality wherever he ends up. The machine-like midfielder is currently under contract with Atletico Madrid but Arsenal are known to rank Partey as their number one transfer target. Presently, a fee hasn't been agreed and the managerial changes at Juventus has seen Andrea Pirlo linked with the 26 cap powerhouse - it's not yet clear how serious that interest is. One person who hopes he stays with Atletico is CK Akonnor. The reason? Champions League football and an almost guaranteed starting position. Partey made 46 appearances for Diego Simeone's men last year netting four goals and grabbing a solitary assist. It's not his final third contribution that makes him a top player though with his engine, tenacity and general reading of the game his real qualities. You can see why the Gunners want him and why they are favorites to sign him on all the best apps for betting. He ticks every box of what they've been missing in their midfield since the likes of Patrick Viera and Gilberto Silva. He's good enough to transform that team. Please let us see it happen.
