“The Party” is a tragicomedy written by Sally Potter, set in an uptown London townhouse where Kristen Scott Thomas’s character Janet receives phone calls in congratulations on her promotion. The film opens with an unforgettable shot of Janet holding a gun at the camera and then moves back through time to show us how the events to come unfolded. As the party she is hosting takes off and guests begin to arrive the scene is set and the storylines begin to mingle shooting sharp darts of social, existential and political questions at viewers.

Filmed over the fortnight in which the Brexit referendum took place, Potter stresses that “I wanted to work with the healing power of laughter as, let’s say, a shortcut through the really tragic elements”.

A truly epic cast of Patrica Clarkson, Bruno Ganz, Cillian Murphy, Cherry Jones, Emily Mortimer make for the perfect ingredients to take this film to grandmaster levels. And if you are still unsure, think Woody Allen films when Woody Allen was in his heyday, but without having to be torn about liking films by someone who was creepy enough to get married to his adopted daughter. That’s right, “The Party” is the best of all worlds and just a true gem to come out of an otherwise occasionally questionable 2017.

Sharp Objects (2018)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Can you believe that I’ve never seen or read gone girl? It was one of those novels and films that everyone talks about that for whatever reason just slipped my attention. I was paying close attention to Sharp objects however, as I found the novel dark with engrossing characters and was excited to see it all played out on screen. 

When it comes to film or television adaptations to novels the question becomes does it translate? Do these actors portray the characters the way I imagined them while reading, and does the story work in a visual medium? Sharp objects is a small, but tight 8 episodes that while slow paced is almost completely character driven. 

Reporter Camille Preaker, heads back to the small town she grew up in to investigate unsolved crimes. This also leads Camille to reconnecting with her estranged family where nothing is quite as it seems. 

Amy Adams takes on the role of Camille, she’s an actress that I’ve always found compelling but she is often in films that aren’t amazing even if she is good in them. After two episodes of sharp objects it was apparent to me that Adams is finally getting her chance to shine here, and shine she does. Adams is deeply troubled and a deeply complicated character that goes through a whole range of emotions and she is really compelling to watch. Patrica Clarkson plays her mother Adora, this seemingly perfect socialite who has some dark secrets. Clarkson is pretty impressive in how she manages to get under your skin, particularly towards the conclusion while always retaining that facade. The remaining cast is strong but I want to mention Elizabeth Perkins who has a small role, but isn’t it great seeing Perkins on screen? She doesn’t do enough, but this is really Adam’s show, she’s so good here.

Sharp objects is grim, depressing and one of those slow burners, but it’s never boring or dull. Having the focus on the characters makes what transpires almost unbearable, but my god you can’t look away. This adaptation is fairly loyal to the book and I think it was a wise decision to turn it into a miniseries rather the trying to tell this story in 2 hours. Without spoiling anything I’ll say that it builds to a shocking finale, the writing, direction and most importantly, performances are near perfect! And that’s the “tooth” ... get it?
