Jackson went on to famously lead American riflemen during the War of 1812 to defend the young nation against insufferable trespasses and abuses by the United Kingdom that required Americans to fight to defend their country’s sovereignty and honor. By that time, he had fought in multiple duels to defend his wife’s honor and his own, including killing Charles Dickinson in a pistol duel on May 30, 1806, during which Jackson was also shot. Given Andrew Jackson's parents were Scottish-Irish immigrants and Jackson’s fiery character, the motto is certainly fitting for Old Hickory. The Latin motto "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" on the banner in the eagle's beak on the patchbox means "no one provokes me with impunity" and is most famously the motto of the Stuarts and the Kingdom of Scotland as well as the Order of the Thistle and multiple Scottish organizations. at the time, cost the government around $25 each. For some context, the Ellis-Jennings four-shot repeating rifles, arguably the most advanced firearms in use by the U.S. A $100 rifle would certainly have been a high end piece. Harrington of Poughkeepsie, under the sign of an eagle, offered double and single barrel guns for $4.25 to $75, fine rifles for $10 to $100, "smooth rifles" for $9, pistols, a variety of muskets for $4 to $8, and an assortment of accoutrements. It was published on the same page as the town's proclamation of support for Andrew Jackson in the election of 1832 and notes that A.A. Harrington of Poughkeepsie, New York, who ran the "Poughkeepsie Gun Factory" also later known as "Harrington's Gun Manufactory." While researching this rifle, I found his June 2, 1832, dated advertisement in the Poughkeepsie Journal. It is believed to have come from the shop of A. Harrington New York flintlock full-stock rifle. Once you add the connection to the famous and controversial 7 th President of the United States of America, you have a firearm that is truly in a class of its own. Harrington of New York inscribed "Old Hickory" and attributed as owned by President Andrew Jackson.Ī rifle attributed to President Andrew Jackson, Hero of New Orleans.Įven without the “OLD HICKORY” inscription on the cheekpiece and thus the attribution to President Andrew Jackson, this incredible rifle stands as a magnificent example of American fine arms from the "Age of Jackson" and would be near the top of my list for the muzzle loaders in this sale. In my Top 10 video for the upcoming premier auction this rifle came in at number 1: a beautiful, German silver mounted full-stock flintlock rifle from A. I could bury this one at the bottom of the list and build up to arguably the top muzzle loading firearm in the sale, but it is simply too cool not to address at the top. The printed catalog, online portfolio, and the website version are great places to view the full descriptions and vivid photographs for each of these lots in detail. Instead of trying to cover everything, I'll whet your appetite focusing on some of my favorite pieces from the sale. Better yet, come to Preview Day on September 9th and see them all in person in our dedicated Preview Hall. With such a wide selection, it’s impossible to write an article that does the selection justice, so please scroll through Rock Island Auction Company's online catalog to see the sheer number and variety of firearms available. The Pattern 1776 Rifle - the British Army’s First Service Rifle
Tumblr media
The Rifle and the Revolution remain indelibly linked, a story almost as old as the war itself. Patriot farmers and frontiersmen, so we are told, took up the cause of liberty and bested their British overlords thanks to the ingenious use of guerilla warfare and rifles, which the smoothbore weaponry of the Crown forces couldn’t hope to compete against.
This narrative overlooks two salient facts. The first is that only around half of the Whig militia forces during the war were actually armed with rifled weapons (and it’s likewise a mistake to imagine that all those riflemen carried the famed Kentucky long rifle). The other fact is that the British Army and its Loyalist allies also used rifles.
While not the war-defining weapon it has been made out to be, Crown forces certainly were aware of the presence of riflemen among the Whig forces and the deadly effect they could have during battle. In one of the war’s earliest battles, at Bunker Hill in 1775, the British officer corps suffered especially high casualties (in fact the idea that Whigs successfully sniped officers throughout the war is also tenuous - measures to make officers’ uniforms stand out less were taken after Bunker Hill, and there wasn’t a notably large number of officers killed or wounded compared to other conflicts for the rest of the Revolution. The casualties at Bunker Hill comprised of 1/8th of all officer casualties suffered during the course of the war). The new British commander in North America, William Howe, was a keen champion of light infantry tactics, and also understood the tactical advantages offered by small groups of marksmen utilising rifled weaponry.
To that end the British government produced its answer to the Whig sniper, in the creation of the British Army’s 1776 pattern rifle. German-made rifles had been used by British soldiers previously, during the Seven Years War, but only in a few cases - the weapons had never been issued as considered government policy.
One thousand copies of the 1776 Pattern were ordered, 800 from British gunsmiths and 200 from Hanoverian ones. Four British companies produced the weapon - William Grice, Mathias Barker & John Whately, Benjamin Willetts and Galton & Sons. The weapon’s design, originally Hanoverian, was based on the typical German military rifles produced during the period and used by German auxiliaries such as the Hessian jaegers fighting alongside the British.
Tumblr media
The weapons were shipped to troops in America, where they were dispensed across Crown Forces - five were issued to each Light Dragoon troop and each company of British Army light infantry regulars, as well as Loyalist regiments like the Queen’s Rangers, who possessed an entire, dedicated rifle company.
The weapon itself was a well-thought-out design created to cover many types of mission both mounted and on foot on a faraway frontier. In order to facilitate ease of maintenance, the barrel was fitted with a break-off breech and secured to the stock by three captured slides or keys. Thus, the barrel could be easily fieldstripped out of the wood for cleaning and the slides stayed in the stock without chance of loss (a feature usually found only on fine sporting rifles). The British normally used boiling water to clean the black powder fouling and being able to remove the barrel meant the wood wouldn’t get soaked as well.
The captive rammer operated on swivels held in place by a spring to prevent the rammer from flying out of place—an important feature to mounted units. The rammer itself was held in the swivels by a threaded brass nut. Removing this brass nut allowed the rammer to double as a cleaning rod with appropriate tools threaded on. A pair of pins on either side of the barrel stopped the rammer above the bore’s centerline.
One economy measure on British-made P1776’s was leaving off a patchbox, either to hold down cost or because the Army didn’t appreciate its value. The Rangers apparently carried ammunition in their haversacks. The P1776 was not equipped for a bayonet, and infantry were supposed to be issued short swords as a secondary weapon.
On the practical side, the barrel was rifled for use of the standard carbine ball with a patch. The muzzle of the iron barrel was slightly swaged so a patched ball could be seated flush in the barrel without using a short starter. Today this is called “coning the muzzle” and is done with a reamer or a hone. A secondary benefit was this allowed the use of the standard carbine paper cartridges in an emergency. Otherwise, riflemen loaded a patched roundball.
Tumblr media
Many riflemen stitched the patches to the balls for faster loading in a fight. Author DeWitt Bailey notes, “…what is not stated in the records is that much latitude was left to the individual riflemen and their officers as to how and with what their rifles were loaded.”
The issue powder horn did not have a measure. Since German riflemen were expected to work up an accurate load for their individual pieces, it is believed British riflemen were expected to do the same. British riflemen were also issued the much higher quality “super fine, double strength” powder of the same type as their Jäger counterparts rather than musket powder. The rifle had a 3-leaf backsight and a brass blade foresight dovetailed into the barrel.
Tumblr media
The rifles saw heavy service across North America. John Graves Simcoe, commander of the Queen’s Rangers, describes the exploits of one unit during the retreat from Elizabethtown;
‘The riflemen of the Queen’s Rangers, now commanded by Serjeant M’Pherson, were eminently distinguished on this retreat. The enemy’s militia, who followed the army, were kept by them at such a distance, that very few shot reached the battalion; and they concealed themselves so admirably that none of them were wounded, whilst they scarcely returned a shot in vain.’
Today only nine original P1776s remain. Britain, mindful of the weapon’s effectiveness, would expand its use of rifles during the Napoleonic Wars, with the advent of dedicated rifle regiments (including the 60th “Royal American” regiment) and the creation of a new pattern, the now-famous Baker Rifle.
