And we are done! ❤️
Part 1 here Part 2 here Part 3 here Part 4 here
Stella looked a lot like Kameron.
She was Kameron’s older sister, a pre-K teacher in Ventura. She was apologetic as she jogged into the ICU, looking hurried as she stepped into Tommy’s room. “Buck?” she said in lieu of a greeting, eyeing Buck and Bobby with a sheepish look.
“Yeah, hey.” Buck stood up, noticing how Daniel looked at Kameron with an adoring smile and his little arms out to reach her.
“Stelly!” Daniel cried happily, Stella looked relieved as she took Daniel from Buck’s hold. Not missing how Buck’s shoulders and smile dropped at Daniel hugged his aunt.
“Oh, there’s my little Danny boy!” Stella cooed, spinning Daniel a bit to get the boy to laugh. “Oh, my look at you. Look at all these boo boos!” Stella kissed his cast covered arm, “My Danny boy okay?”
“I’m okay!” Daniel declared, he patted his aunt’s face gently.
“He’s okay.” Buck added, rubbing his hands against his sides to ware off the jittery feeling that was building in him. “The doctors didn’t really tell me anything but the social worker did let me know that’s he’s going to be okay.”
Buck felt gutted, he took a deep breath out as he watched Daniel finally reunite with a family member.
Stella gave him a kind smile, “Thank you. I was so busy today with my class and just school duties that I didn’t even get a chance to even look at my phone and once I did, well.” She shook her head, “It’s pretty hard to speed down here from Ventura during rush hour, I’m just so glad that you were with him.”
“Hi there.”
Buck felt Bobby’s hand touch his shoulder briefly, brining him back down to earth. “Yeah-Uh, it’s not me you should be thanking. It’s Tommy.” Buck nodded over to where Tommy was watching them, clearly feeling awkward as he waved at Stella.
“You saved him?” Stella asked, walking closer to Tommy and causing Daniel to get excited that he was near his “Tummy” again.
Tommy gave a strained smile, “Part of the job.” He replied uneasy as he caught sight of Buck’s eye roll.
“Part of the job, but you still saved him, twice really.” Buck pointed out, touching Tommy’s ankle that wasn’t in a cast. “Daniel’s never going to forget about “Tummy” saving him.” He teased, chuckling as he caught Tommy’s mildly annoyed look.
“I bet.” Stella joked, hitching Daniel up further as the boy tried to grab ahold of Tommy again.
“Tummy!” Daniel squealed as he finally got ahold of Tommy’s arm.
“Hey,” Stella warned kindly, “Careful.” She stepped away from Tommy, causing Daniel to whine a bit as he tried to reach out for the man again.
Buck and Tommy shared a look as they tried to tell Stella it was okay, with Tommy explaining he knew that Daniel was just seeking comfort since they both survived the avalanche.
“Still, I just need him to be careful and I also don’t want him to get too attached, y’know?” Stella noted as though it was obvious.
Buck felt his heart shatter at that, his breath hitched as he saw the light in Tommy’s eyes fade as he too understood what Stella meant.
“Yeah,” Buck said slowly, his bones feeling heavier with guilt and something akin to jealously as he realized what was finally happening. “Maybe we should-uh, talk outside?”
Stella looked confused but agreed happily, Bobby though looked worried as he started to follow them out. “Hey, uh- why don’t you stay here with Tommy.”
Bobby paused, eyeing Stella and Amir who was back at the nurses’ station. Bobby turned back to Tommy, noting that Tommy was shaking his head ‘no’, sending Bobby a pleading look to go after Buck. “I’m sure Tommy wouldn’t-”
“Bobby,” Buck was resolute, “I’m good. Just, uh-give us a minute, okay?”
“So, where they able to tell you anything about Kameron and Connor?” Buck asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he mentally prepared himself to ask the questions that had been swirling in his mind since he found out about Daniel.
Buck slowly closed the door behind them, watching as Stella played with Daniel in her arms.
Stella pressed her lips together, “They’re in critical condition, doctors expect them to live thankfully, but they think that there’s still a chance that they both will need more surgeries. Connor got hit really bad and Kameron, she got pinned and the doctors think that she’s going to have the hardest time post-surgery with physical therapy and just healing in general.” She explained, her eyes getting glossy with every word. “I-I don’t know how Daniel survived that, but I’m also thankful that he did.” Stella ran her fingers through Daniel’s hair, kissing the little boy on his forehead. “I’m so happy my little baby nephew is okay.” She finally looked at Buck. “I’m sorry that Tommy got hurt though, is he your friend or teammate? I remember Connor and Kameron mentioning that you’re a firefighter.”
Buck gnawed on his lip a bit, he kept his answer to a half truth. “I am and he is.” Stella knew more about him than he did her, “Can I ask you something?”
Stella nodded. “Sure.”
“Did-Kameron and Connor, they-uh, they stopped really talking to me after Daniel was born. That was on purpose, wasn’t it?”
Stella’s eyes widened, Buck knew she was trying to figure out if she should lie or not. “I don’t know if I should say.”
Buck shrugged, leaning against the wall as he told her “I don’t mean to pressure you into answering or anything, but it’s just- Connor and I were friends and then he and I drifted and he came back into my life to ask about me donating sperm to him and Kameron and then the next minute I know, he’s gone again. I didn’t expect him and Kameron to be in my life everyday, but this time- it felt personal.” Buck explained, his voice rough with emotions as he looked at Daniel.
Stella nodded, lip jutting out as she looked nervously around for a moment. “They thought it would be better this way.” She admitted quietly, her eyes casted down. “I was the only one who knew about them asking you to be their donor, they felt weird about it and I know that Connor loves Daniel, but he didn’t want you hanging over his head as a reminder that he wasn’t really the dad.”
Buck nodded, flinching as he realized his worst fear came to fruition.
“Right.”
Stell looked at him with a pitiful look, “I-I don’t agree with it, Buck. I think what you did was very selfless and admirable, but I know how much pressure they were getting from the family. I don’t think they wanted that added drama of having to explain to them about you being the donor.”
Buck nodded, rubbing his face tiredly, trying to keep the voices of doubt quiet in his mind. He could feel his anxiety and fears bubbling up as he touched Daniel’s hand, those blue eyes just like his looking back at him with adoration.
“Uh,” Buck swallowed thickly, “One other thing…his name?”
Stella blinked owlishly at him, “What about it?”
“Where did it come from?”
Stella took a deep breath and then out, “He’s named after our brother, Daniel.”
Kameron did mention she had an older brother that passed while they were doing the paperwork during the donation process, but never mentioned the brother’s name outright.
“Yeah,” Buck felt disoriented now, they had an older brother named Daniel. “Kameron, I-I think she mentioned that.”
“He died in 2021, drunk driver accident. He was a doctor, a resident really, but he was hoping to be a pediatric oncologist. He loved kids, it was Kameron’s way of remembering him.”
Buck rubbed his stomach; he was hoping he didn’t look queasy but Stella’s question of “Are you okay? You look pale.” proved he wasn't doing a good job at hiding his discomfort.
Buck felt like had just swallowed bile, he tried not to cringe as his head pounded in that one spot between his eyes. “Yeah,” he breathed out uneasily. “I’m-I’ll be fine.” He didn’t sound sure to either himself or Stella, who gave him an uneasy once over.
The door to Tommy’s room opened, Bobby stepped out. “Everything okay?” he jutted his thumb behind him to where Tommy was, “Tommy and I were getting worried.”
They both gave Bobby a strained smile, their attempts to assuage Bobby’s worries felt half-hearted as they both went back into the room, with Bobby pulling Buck back.
He looked beyond worried as he asked, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Bobby.” Buck sniffed, avoiding Bobby’s glances as he tried to go back into the room.
“Care to tell your face that, what did Stella say?”
Buck shook his ‘no’, wiping away the tears as he urged Bobby to not push it.
“Hey!” Tommy smiled at him, clearly pretending that he didn’t notice that Buck was on his last rope, “I asked Stella if it was okay for us to take some pictures with Daniel, wanted to commemorate this save. What do you think?”
Buck knew what Tommy was trying to do.
And it made it that much harder not to fall in love with Tommy Kinard.
-
Bobby had insisted he go along with Buck and Stell to Connor and Kameron’s room, Stella had opted to stay in their room and then book a hotel by the hospital till Connor’s mom came to town.
Despite Buck’s best efforts to offer his place to Stella and Daniel, Stella had insisted she could get a hotel since it made sense to be close by the hospital.
Even though Buck was sure he could possibly run into them again, his gut was telling him that this was goodbye for now. He forced himself to keep his emotions in check as he hugged Daniel goodbye, engraving how the boy looked and sounded into his memory.
“Can you say ‘Bye Buck’?” Stella cooed adoringly, waving goodbye to Buck and Bobby as Daniel wavered tiredly at them.
“Bye Buck.”
“Bye Daniel.”
‘I love you.’ He thought wistfully as he waved to the small boy, nodding at Stella with a sad smile as she gave him a wave goodbye herself.
Once they were on the other side of the floor again, Bobby pulled him into a hug.
“Felt like you could use this.” Bobby told him, Buck said nothing- only hugging him tighter as he finally broke down. Sobbing into Bobby’s shoulder and unleashing the guilt and pain he had felt for years about how his parents treated him, about not being able to save Daniel, about now losing this Daniel.
“Buck, you did the right thing.”
“It doesn’t feel like it.” Buck admitted, his chest tightening as he felt panic set in. His breathing felt labored as Bobby ushered him into a waiting room chair. “It feels like,” he seethed at the pain, “It just hurts, Bobby.” He cried.
“Look,” Bobby kneeled down in front of him, “I know you said you just think this was just some big coincidence but-”
Buck scoffed, shaking his head in frustration that Bobby would pick now to be religious, “Bobby, I-I don’t think I can handle you bringing up how this is some sort of message from God or something right now.” Buck pleaded, keeled over with his hand to his stomach.
Bobby rolled his eyes, “I don’t think it’s a message from God, I think it’s a message from Daniel.”
Buck frowned at that, “What-You think my dead brother did all this to say what? Screw you for not saving me or something?” he snapped, not meaning to sound so on edge but he was angry and hurt.
Bobby’s expression softened, “No.” he replied firmly, getting up to stand over Buck now, “I think he did all of this to say ‘I love you.” He sat down next to Buck, “I know you’re always going to feel guilty about Daniel, he wasn’t that much older that this Daniel when he died, right?”
Buck nodded ‘yes’ to that.
“Buck, you were baby when all of that happened to your brother, I’m sure your brother wouldn’t want you to carry that guilt, I’m sure he wouldn’t want you to feel like you’re responsible when you didn’t even know about him up until a few years ago.”
“It doesn’t feel like “I love you.”” Buck huffed, sniffing and wiping his nose with his sleeve.
Bobby sighed, “I think bringing Daniel into your life was more of a ‘Thank you.’ Bringing back Tommy? That was 'I love you'.”
-
“Hey, you okay?” Tommy asked, fully alert as Buck came back into the room, sans Bobby who had gone to get them dinner before visiting hours ended.
“You keep asking me that.” Buck fell back against the chair, bone tired as he tried to smile at Tommy with no luck.
“I know, but I’m worried about you.” Tommy confessed, “You didn’t seem okay when we were taking pictures with Daniel.” He noted as he looked over Buck, studying him almost. “Evan, what did Stella tell you?”
Buck braced himself, exhausted from crying. He knew he looked awful, he was sure his face was splotchy and his eyes were red and puffy from sobbing. “She uh,” he cleared his throat, wary that he already sounded pitiful to his own ears. “She uh told me that Kameron and Connor didn’t want to keep in touch with me anymore since they didn’t want to risk their family finding out about me being the donor for Daniel.”
Tommy frowned at that, swearing under his breath, “After what you did for them?” he asked incredulously.
“It’s okay, Tommy.”
“No! It’s not okay.” Tommy snapped, “You did a thing for them, this amazing selfless thing that I don’t think anyone could do for their friend, so called friends really, and they just what? Cut you off? Pretend that you don’t exist?” he spat angrily.
“I’m used to it.” Buck huffed, trying to smile, which only irked Tommy off more.
“Evan, you shouldn’t be! You’re too…kind for this! For them!” Tommy was getting redder with every word, Buck was half worried about his heart monitor going off. “Where the hell do they come off to just come in and out of your life like that.”
Buck shrugged, “People leave. You left.”
That sucked all the anger out of Tommy, “I-I did leave, didn’t I?” he asked, his bravado gone and replaced with something akin to fear.
Buck replied with a soft “Hmm.”
Tommy said nothing for a while, “You’re too good for most people, you’re too good for me.”
“I think I’m too much for most people.” Buck corrected, sounding morose as he stared down at the floor.
“Evan, you can’t believe that, can you?”
Buck shrugged, “I-I don’t get the people that stay. That-that like me. I know I have Bobby and Hen and Chim and Eddie and Maddie, but-they’re-they’re not mine. They have their own lives and family to go home to. I don’t.” he let out a depressing laugh, “You know after you broke up with me, I realized how lonely I really was? You and I were always together, even when we where on shift we would text and then suddenly- I didn’t have you anymore.” He rubbed his jaw, “Everyone kept telling me to move on and that I should just put myself out there, but it’s easy for them to say that when they have someone. I had you.” Buck said miserably, wiping away tears again. “I just wanted you.”
Tommy sniffed, his eyes welling up, “I wanted you too.” He confessed softly, “You don’t know how many times I thought I about going back to your apartment that night or calling you after. I don’t even remember what I did after that night, I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought ‘he’s going to meet the right person and I can’t get in the way of that.’”
Buck flinched, “You said that you were my first, not my last. Why do you think that?”
“Because I’m not the guy that gets picked, Evan. I’m not the guy people choose.” Buck had never seen Tommy so broken and vulnerable before, he looked and sounded so small as he continued, “I could never get anyone to stay and the people that did, they didn’t like the real me. They just could tolerate me till something better would come along, be it my family or exes or friends, or father figures. I wanted to keep you Evan, but you would find someone better. You deserve someone better.”
Buck leaned forward, pulling the chair closer to Tommy’s bed, “Do I get a say here?” he asked, he was getting fed up with his friends telling him the opposite of what he wanted to hear. To hear Tommy make the decision to break up for Buck’s sake was just making Buck’s headache hurt worse. “You keep thinking that you’re doing something noble here and all you’re doing is just breaking my heart, Tommy.”
“Evan-”
“No, you think you deserve to not be happy or not be in love or something, I know you felt like you were the bad guy and that you lied and hurt others to protect yourself and I know you felt like you were never enough- but this, whatever this is, it doesn’t make up or protect you. You’re just punishing yourself and me with this. I-I think I’m too much and you think you’re not enough.” He grabbed ahold of Tommy’s hand, his voice finally breaking when he saw Tommy’s lower lip tremble and tears start to fall, “I think you’re enough. I know you are.”
He watched Tommy swallow, “And you’ve never been too much, to hell with anyone who has ever told you that.”
Buck licked his lips, feeling the dry and cracked skin there as Tommy’s eyes followed his tongue. “I-I know. Can-Tommy, can we try again?”
“Evan-”
“Tommy, I’m dying without you.” Buck pleaded, pressing Tommy’s hand to his cheek and kissing the skin on his wrist, “I-I know we have a lot to learn about each other still, but I’m willing to learn and wait. I think you’re worth that.”
“So are you.” Tommy sniffed, “I don’t want to mess this up, I-I can’t lose you or us. But I’m scared, you’re the first man I’ve ever seen a future with.”
Buck felt a sense of relief wash over him as he felt Tommy’s hand press against his cheek, Tommy’s thumb brushing away his tears.
“I don’t know if can even believe I’m worth staying for.” Tommy confessed quietly. “I don’t know how to believe that I’m worth it.”
Buck pressed his nose against Tommy’s, not caring if his tears fell against Tommy’s face. “I’ll teach you.”
The pressure behind Buck’s eyes finally went away when Tommy kissed him.
-
Four months later…
Tommy groaned as he finally made it to their couch. “Screw physical therapy.” He groused, ignoring how Buck was smiling at him.
“Hey, you did great today.” Buck reminded him gently, giving his boyfriend a chaste kiss as he took the crutches from Tommy and laid them against their side table. “How about lunch?”
“And a nap.”
Buck rubbed Tommy’s stomach, earning him a small smile from the older man who pulled him for another kiss.
They went slow this time, but in the end they still spent every free moment together. Their conversations were deep and meaningful, exploring things together and with a therapist.
Three months later, they agreed to move in together.
They both had their friends in their ears about concerns about moving in together, but both men chose to ignore their loved one’s concerns. This was something that Tommy and Buck had talked about and agreed on. It wasn’t a rash thought that just plopped out between them, they wanted this. They missed each other when they apart and they each could admit that they wanted this - they wanted a forever with each other. They agreed that moving in together made sense and it made even more sense for Buck to move into Tommy’s place.
The first thing they put up together?
The picture of them and Daniel in the hospital, framed and hanging in the wall in their living room.
In the end it was a ‘thank you’ and ‘I love you’ from Daniel Buckley after all.

What do you think about RFK Jr possibly making Aaron Rodgers his VP?
It just amazes me that RFK Jr. thinks that his best options for running mates are two of the only public figures in America who might be considered even more goofy conspiracy theorists than he is -- Aaron Rodgers and Jesse Ventura.
Aaron Rodgers is so thin-skinned and whiny that he can't even do Pat McAfee's podcast regularly without bitching about what somebody said about him. Imagine someone like that running for office? Oh wait...we've been dealing with that since 2015 and this country actually elected that guy President in 2016.
I don't think Rodgers will be the choice. If he was, he'd basically have to quit the NFL and I think he still wants to play. He's 40 years old and missed all of last season with an injury, so he couldn't take another season off just to lose a race as running mate to a fellow conspiracy theorist on a third-party ticket.
If I had to bet, I think RFK Jr. is just trying to throw people off the scent and he's going to pick Tulsi Gabbard. Honestly, Ventura would probably be his best bet -- he's a former Governor who is almost certainly the most successful third-party candidate in American history. And Ventura would be much better on the campaign trail than Rodgers or Gabbard (or RFK Jr., really). But any of those tickets might as well call themselves the Wack Pack party.
Has anybody mentioned yet that this 2024 election cycle is going to be a fucking drag? Calling this country's political scene a "shitshow" is unfair to both shit and shows. Whomever this third-party ticket's nominees are should show up at their campaign rallies in a clown car.

Notorious by Kafu, translation
youtube
This is the character song for Aki from Maimaimaigoen.
Not enough, I haven't been praised nearly enough yet. It's the glitziest acclaim that's tutti frutti, after all. Every single day's a holiday, lady, lady. We're all safe and sound tonight. Good night to you: Notorious.
Eat and sleep, achieve and sleep. Eat and sleep, achieve and sleep. Inside the pockets of a genius are the fingers of God, after all. Envy, envy, I envy human beings. Pat this head of mine that's living from hand to mouth. The stampede dance goes rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat. Sleeping in poverty, I am detached, detached. Notorious.
Take it up. Put up the most ostentatious decoration. Make it into a cheap gilded skin. The arrival of dizziness still never-before-seen, Both aptitude and how I'm viewed: Take it up. Take it up. Everyone take it along. This scrawny girl's notorious.
Eat and sleep, achieve and sleep. Eat and sleep, achieve and sleep.
3, 2, no. 1 is what I wanna be, wanna be, wanna be regarded. Splendid, splendid, human beings are splendid. I lost my book only to find the bookmark. Why is that, Lady Luck? Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat. All they do is suck up*. Just how boring is that? Notorious.
La-la-laughing at me, they are laughing at me. Somebody is la-la-la-la-laughing at me.
*The original Japanese had a pun here, using "Oh, Ventura" (Latin for fortune) and obenchura (Japanese for sycophantery), which are pronounced the same in Japanese. I did my best to convey the wordplay into English rather than using the literal words of the original.

ACE VENTURA X READER — epilogue
warnings: none! :) happy ending <3
"dr. ventura!" a voice called, turning down the hallway. your office was situated near the front of the building so that your colleagues could reach it easily.
you smiled, looking up from your files on the various pet patients of your clinic to meet the person behind the voice.
"what is it, morgan?" you asked, getting up from your seat. the girl- no, you shouldn't call her a girl anymore. she was a young woman now, after all. she shuffled slightly, smiling awkwardly.
"um, there are no more patients for the day. do you need help with anything?" she asked. you laughed, patting her on the back gently. "not at all! go on, you've worked hard today! you can go home for the day."
morgan and her parents were eventually reunited, but things didn't stay stable. their daughter was changed beyond repair- the girl who used to be a bubbly cheerleader was now a quiet 'freak' who refused to make eye contact with anybody. you wanted to keep looking out for her, of course. you and ace tried your best to support her when her parents couldn't, and the two of you let her move in with you temporarily once she turned eighteen. you offered her a job at your clinic until she could find what she wanted to do. she went to therapy weekly, and used one of ace's dogs as a therapy dog.
morgan nodded, smiling slightly. "y-yes, of course! thank you, y/n." she turned away quickly to go start your shared car. wasn't it a wonder that after all of her psychological damage, she could still relearn how to drive?
you locked up your office for the night, making your way to the receptionist desk. laikyn and janice both sat there, taking care of files and records. you smiled at the women, waving.
"g'night, ladies!" you chirped, and they both returned the sentiment.
fieldpool & co. was shut down not long after arthur's death and milton's arrest. plenty of the employees were able to get right back on their feet- after all, they had reputable, desirable positions.
however, the two remaining secretaries of fieldpool & co. could easily be found elsewhere for companies hiring. so, when you opened your own clinic, you knew you needed to hire them. janice had been nothing but kind, and while you and laikyn had gotten off to a rocky start, she was one of the key elements leading to milton's arrest.
you set the nightly alarm and made your way to the car. morgan was sitting in the passenger seat, meaning she wanted you to drive. after long work days, sometimes she didn't want to speak; you had learned to pick up on her nonverbal cues, however.
you drove to the house you and ace now resided in (along with morgan), ready to laze around after working all day. you were sure ace was already in bed waiting for you.
you and morgan were greeted with countless animals as she went off to her room and you went upstairs.
there, you found ace in your shared bed cuddled up with snuffy and callie. snuffy was an old woman now, and therefore more crabby than before. however, she was never opposed to letting her 'parents' snuggle with her.
you quietly did your nightly routine, slipping into pajamas. as you snuck into bed, ace groaned.
"what took ya so long, babe?" he muttered gruffly. his voice still brought butterflies to your stomach. you laughed, cupping his face as you pressed a kiss to his forehead.
"just work, as always. and anyways, don't you have a raccoon to go save tomorrow or something?" you remarked snidely, still trying to keep up the playful atmosphere despite how badly you'd miss him.
he groaned again, squeezing your hand. "yes, but that's easy work for me, doll! what you really need to worry about is me not getting a good nights rest because i don't have you by my side!"
you couldn't help but giggle at your husband's pout. "i need to work to make money, ace. besides, whose name is on the deed?" you teased. he suddenly growled, enveloping you in his embrace. you shrieked out of surprise, still returning the hug.
he held you tightly, kissing the top of your head. "trust me, y/n. i know how important your job is. you know that nobody's more proud of you than i am!" you smirked.
"of course, of course. now please, get some rest, darling," you cooed. ace held you even tighter. he noticed your staring and smirked.
"you like what you see?" he teased, reminiscing your first encounter. you groaned, pulling him closer.
"you're lucky i love you, ventura."

Santa Monica is cool and stuff, but have you ever gone to the beaches in Ventura? Zen AF.
Here's some beach fluff.
Buck and Tommy were all too thrilled to be up at 7 am on their day off.
Only because they had plans for today.
Amazing and, hopefully, fun plans.
"You guys are amazing to agree to watch them." Hen told them sincerely as she and Maddie watched as Mara and Jee excitedly hugged Tommy and Buck.
"Yeah, we can't thank you enough." Maddie added, hands over her heart as she watched Tommy pick up Jee.
"Thank us for watching our favorite nieces? Please. " Tommy playfully scoffed. "This has been the one thing we've been looking forward to all week." Tommy admitted, patting Jees back in comfort as the little girl rested her head onto Tommy's shoulder.
Buck looked at his sister who was trying to not coo at the sight. He was fighting the same issue, watching his neice and his boyfriend snuggle was making his heart skip beats.
"Tommy's right," Buck added, smiling softly at Jee and Mara, who was holding onto Buck's arm and dozing off since it was still so early for them both. "We’ve been excited to babysit the girls, we've got everything we need." He pointed towards his sister, "including snacks!"
Both women rolled their eyes at him, but Buck shrugged it off. "What about Denny? He really didn't want to come?"
Hen gave them an apologetic smile, "As much as he actually did want to come along, his school is taking part in a robotics competition and Denny wanted to go since apparently robot fighting is rumored to be expected." Hen explained, rolling her eyes at Buck's excited look.
"Robot fighting versus beach day. Totally get it." He joked.
"Karen and Chim should be able to get the girls by tomorrow morning, that still works?"
Tommy gave them a thumbs up, while Buck nodded with an excited grin. "Works perfectly."
Maddie and Hen gave both men a "Thank you" before kissing both girls goodbye, reminding them to be nice to their uncles before leaving.
"Okay!" Buck clapped his hands together excited, "Who's up for some strawberry Frenchtoast before we hit the road?"
"Me!"
"Meeeeeee!"Jee popping right awake had Tommy laughing as he followed Buck and Mara into the kitchen.
After breakfast, the four of them got into Buck's jeep and started the drive up north.
Fortunately, driving up from Tommy's house is easier since they avoided all the traffic coming into LA.
The first spot was a small beach by Harbor Village, Tommy and Buck were able to set up a spot close to the water with Mara and Jee's help.
(Jee, ever the little helper, got upset that she couldn't carry the beach chairs to show she was just as strong as her uncle Buck and uncle Tommy)
Buck helped Mara get her swim cap on as Tommy laid out a blanket and got the toys they had bought for the girls specifically. Both men were also adamant about sun block for both girls, spraying a liberal amount on both their nieces (and themselves).
Both men took turns sitting on the beach and watching over their things as they took the girls out into the water. With Buck getting each girl to paddle board with him and Tommy showing them how to surf. Both girls ended up playing in the water for a long while, squealing happily as the water splashed around them. They made sand castles, played around with a volley ball, and took lot of pictures to send to Karen, Hen, Chimney, and Maddie.
Before long it was nearing one and all of the snacks were gone. "Who's up for some burgers?" Tommy asked the crew as he and Buck helped the girls into some shorts and hoodies. They had managed to get their stuff back into the jeep (and collected half of the beaches sand too).
"Me!" "Me, I'm really hungry!"
Buck picked up Jee and pointed towards the small gathering of restaurants that were walking distance. "Theres a old school burger shop that has milkshakes." He told them in a sing a long voice. "Does that work?"
Mara nodded excitedly at that, "Yes! Can I have a strawberry milkshake?" She asked politely.
Tommy felt his heart lurch out, he had seen how comfortable Mara was getting with not only the team but with them specifically. She had taken a while to open up to Buck and himself, understandably, but now? He would refuse to admit to anyone but Buck about how it almost had him tearing up at how Mara felt safe and comfortable with them now.
"Of course you can, Mara." He told her gently, holding out his hand for her to take, leading them towards the restaurant.
After lunch they headed over to main street, letting the girls burn their energy off as they walked down the street and into shops that interested them.
(Did Tommy and Buck buy each girl a new coloring set, stickers, and their own individual ukulele? Yep!)
They drove further up till they made it to Santa Barbara. The girls loved the water, again asking both men to take them paddle boarding and surfing.
Buck felt more relaxed as ever as he watched Tommy play with the girls, laughing as the girls tried to tackle Tommy into the water.
Buck felt his heart skip a beat again, he rubbed his chest. He could feel his eyes sting as he thought about Tommy and him having kids, giving Mara, Denny, Jee, and Christopher a few new cousins to play with.
He hadn’t spoken to Tommy much about them having kids, but he knew Tommy wanted kids. He knew how much Tommy adored all the kids from the 118 and his own nephew and niece (Buck had met Theo, age 3, and Harley, age 6 via zoom and saw how much they meant to Tommy).
It was something they both wanted, Buck was only a little bit doubtful about it being something that Tommy wanted with him.
After enjoying tacos for dinner, the group made their way to the ice cream parlor, Buck knowing how crowded the town got crowded in the evening opted to hold a table in the courtyard for them. He took Jee with him and left Mara and Tommy to order their ice cream.
Ten minutes later, a very smiley Mara and a red faced Tommy came towards them, each carrying a cup of ice-cream in their hands.
"Hey uncle Buck, guess what!"
"What?" Buck quickly gave Jees ice-cream to her since his little niece was making grabby hands towards the dessert and looking annoyed.
"The cashier at the ice-cream shop thought you and uncle Tommy were my dads. It was cute, they told uncle Tommy that we're a cute family."
That explained Tommy's red face.
"That was sweet of them." Buck smiled, he looked up at Tommy again, giving his boyfriend a hopeful smile as the four sat to eat their dessert.
By the time they got back to Tommy's place, it was late and both girls were passed out asleep.
"You think about one day doing this with our own kids?" Tommy asked, almost hesitantly as he carried a sleepy Mara while Buck carried Jee into the house.
Buck was sure this time that his heart melted at that, he took a moment to catch his voice. "Every day." He answered softly.
Morning came way too fast for everyone in the house, Tommy and Buck were still dealing with two very tired girls.
"I can drink a little coffee, can't I uncle Tommy?" Mara asked, eyeing the steaming cup that Buck had placed for Tommy and himself.
"Nooo." Tommy stressed, moving the cup away from Mara. "You get some non caffeine drinks, I've got juice, milk, chocolate milk, or I can make you smoothie."
Mara pouted at that but answered "Smoothie please."
"You too Jee?"
Jee shook her head no, "I want juice please!"
They were in the middle of eating when the doorbell rang, "I know who that is." Tommy got up, "Take your time eating, I'm sure Chim and Karen could use some breakfast."
"Is that why we cooked enough to feed an army?" Buck joked. He smiled at the two girls before noticing their downtrodden expressions. "You two okay? What's up?"
"Do we have to go?" Mara asked, "Can't we stay one more day?"
"Pleeeease!" Jee added, "I want to have more fun."
Buck pressed his lips together momentarily, one to keep from smiling so hard and two, to keep from crying at how much his nieces adored them.
"You guys are always welcome here, yknow that." He reminded them, "What if I talk to your parents about having an uncles' day once a week? That way you guys can spend some time with us?"
Jee clapper her hands together and Mara nodded, all smiles as Chim and Karen came into the kitchen.
"Hey mom, uncle Buck said we could do a uncles day every week!" Mara said excitedly, running up to Karen and the Chimney for a hug hello.
"Did he now?" Karen looked almost smug at that, she knew how much of a softie Buck was. "I think that's a wonderful idea, right Chim?"
Chim picked up Jee, tickling her side, "Hey, if Buck and Tommy are up for it, you won't find me complaining."
After breakfast, Tommy and Buck hugged the girls goodbye while grappling with Karen and Chim bemoaning for buying them a jeep full of toys and books ("You try telling Mara and Jee no after they tell you that you're their favorite uncle!" Tommy complained after receiving the glare from Chim when he saw the ukulele).
The house became all too quiet too quickly. Tommy took Buck's hand and led him toward the living room, pulling the man onto the couch for cuddles.
"So, still want kids then?" Buck asked, rubbing his hand up and down Tommy's arm.
"With you? Of course I do."
Buck felt himself melt into Tommy's hold finally, content and safe about their future.
"I do have a question for you though, a pretty important one." Tommy admitted after a beat of silence.
He sounded serious and anxious enough for Buck to sit up and turn to look at him.
"O-okay." Buck stammered, his nerves fraying as he watched Tommy carefully for any signs of what the queation could entail. "What's the question?"
Tommy let out a happy and content sigh, taking a hold of Buck's hands, and then got down on one knee...
