In the Uldum Sun
Tumblr media
June was sitting in the hammock on the porch, watching Matin playing outside with Ham - tossing cubes of basilisk steak into the air for the very large scarab to catch. His hair was already growing out again, but she and Sif were doing their best to keep it as controlled as possible. The time he’d been spending in the heat had started making it curl slightly.
The Botanist, meanwhile, had gained quite the tan, her normally pale skin finally getting used to the exposure to the Uldum sun. Her platinum blonde hair was very long now, down to her waist, with a wind-blown look thanks to her outdoor runs that she regularly took.
Light jade eyes shifted about gently, taking in the expansive desert, the boy and his scarab, the buildings of Ramkahen and its inhabitants milling about. It wasn’t until Sif’s voice broke her out of her reverie that she blinked:
“Mail for you, Miss Juniper.” At the moniker, June’s nose wrinkled a little and she offered the woman a small smile.
“You know, you don’t have to be so formal. June is fine. Or Lark. Or even Rose,” she chuckled as she took the envelope from the Ulduni woman, “but please… please don’t call me Miss.” Sif’s return grin was a bit mischievous.
“Remind you of someone you don’t like?”
Platinum locks swayed as June shook her head, “Reminds me of a time I’d rather forget.” she replied. Sif gave a nod in return.
“Fair enough. Is that from Adinah?”
June’s gaze shifted from the woman to the envelope in her hands. She felt of it gently, curious as to the heavy object within. Her expression turned to a more somber one as she examined the writing on it and an exhale left her nose in a rush. Quai’s handwriting. She’d recognize it anywhere. As she shook her head to Sif, she flipped the envelope and broke the seal; a key fell into her hand. She held it tightly, smoothing the paper and reading its contents:
June,
I hope this finds you well. The included key is to a storage facility in Stormwind, where you will find your possessions from the Wetlands base, the Boralus house, the Stormwind base, and the boat. If I’ve forgotten anything, please write me care of Andrew Mason, general delivery, Stormwind. I won’t be around for a while.
Should you wish to harvest anything growing at the Wetlands property, the land is no longer warded, so you should have no issues accessing your garden. Gwen wishes for me to let you know that her house in the Wetlands is open to you as well, as a fellow herbalist. It is located north of Greenwarden’s Grove— look for the only Oak in the area, and a low, stone wall. There are bay laurels around the perimeter of the property.
On a more personal note, it was truly a genuine pleasure to have you as part of our team. You grew so much over the past few years, and I am— and will always be— proud of the work you’ve done. I only wish it had not ended as suddenly as it did. Please write if you have questions, or simply for the sake of conversation. I will respond when I am able.
Additionally, you will be receiving a small stipend for the next ten years from the military. It will be deposited into your account on the first of every month. It isn’t much, but it’s what I was able to bargain for upon my release.
I do not have a contact for Malodar, so I have included a few things of his along with yours. I would be grateful if you could let him know, should you see him again in your travels.
Your friend,
Quai
June sighed again. At least she knew now that Quai was out of Stormwind’s Stockades. She flipped the envelope back over. It was date-stamped nearly two weeks ago when it was mailed out. That honestly didn’t surprise her. The only ones who knew where she’d gone after Arathi were Ky and Alanna. The Post had likely had to hunt down where to send it. Pale eyes looked back up to Sif.
“Do the city’s mages still have portal stones for Stormwind?” Sif gave a nod.
“I’m certain they do. Will you be going today, or do you need to plan?”
Tumblr media
A soft inhale sounded from June as her gaze moved back to Matin. She had told Ky she’d stay and keep an eye on him while she was gone on her mission. Instantly her thoughts were tinged with worry. But Ky was far more resilient than her. She was certain she was fine. Sif’s hand moved to rub June’s arm softly.
“Don’t worry so much - you of all people know she’s been through worse than dealing with a group like the Venture Company.”
June nodded and sighed, looking back to Sif, “I won’t go to the city just yet - I’ll wait for Ky to get back home.”
As Sif nodded and walked back toward the city’s center, June watched Matin patting Ham’s head. A number of things were on her mind, but for now she had to see to lunch for herself and Matin.

Since former Mississippi State coworker Joe Judge landed the Giants‘ HC job, Freddie Kitchens has been linked to a staff position. A report circulated Tuesday indicating Judge will hire Kitchens for an unspecified role (Twitter link via AL.com), but ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan tweets nothing is finalized between the Giants and the former Browns coach. The Giants have hired a quarterbacks coach, Jerry Schuplinski, but certainly could add the longtime offensive assistant in another capacity. Here is the latest from the coaching carousel: * Before deciding to reunite with Scott Turner, Ron Rivera interviewed 2019 Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell for the job, J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Washington notes. Rivera was interested in former Giants HC Pat Shurmur for OC, but he declined the interview and opted for the Broncos’ play-calling job. O’Connell landed on his feet as well, becoming the Rams’ offensive coordinator. * While the Kitchens hire is not yet certain, veteran secondary coach Jerome Henderson will be joining Judge’s Giants staff, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM Radio tweets. Most recently the Falcons’ DBs coach/defensive passing-game coordinator, the 50-year-old Henderson has also coached the Jets’, Browns’ and Cowboys’ secondaries dating back to 2008. Henderson was a 1991 first-round pick who played eight NFL seasons. * The Giants will also add Jody Wright to their staff, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman (Twitter link). Wright worked with Judge at Mississippi State in the 2000s and was most recently an offensive assistant with the Browns under Kitchens in 2019. Wright also spent time at Alabama during the 2010s and was an assistant head coach at UAB prior to relocating to Cleveland. * On the subject of the Browns, they are not retaining several Kitchens staffers. Most notably, Kevin Stefanski will not bring back quarterbacks coach Ryan Lindley, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Lindley, tight ends coach John Lilly, assistant defensive line coach John Parella and quality control staffersDeuce Schwartz, Tyler Tettleton and Alonso Escalante will not be back. Lindley, 30, served as Browns running backs coach after Kitchens was promoted to OC midway through the 2018 season, and the former quarterback held Cleveland’s QBs coach job this past season. * The Cardinals hired another recent Browns staffer, bringing in offensive assistant Jim Dray, Yates adds. A former Cardinals seventh-round pick in 2010 as a tight end, Dray played eight seasons — mostly in Arizona and Cleveland — and wound up with the Browns in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach. * Recently notified he was out in Cleveland, James Campen may have an opportunity with Carolina. The Panthers are interested in the former Browns offensive line coach, David Newton of ESPN.com tweets. Campen was Mike McCarthy‘s offensive line coach from 2007-18 and spent 15 years as a Green Bay assistant prior to his Cleveland move last year. The Browns hired Bill Callahan to replace him on Monday. #JimDray #WashingtonRedskins #TylerTettleton

Osprey cast a long gaze toward the medical tent. Her fingers brushed against her leg-holster, and caressed the cold butt of her sidearm. A long stream of white smoke escaped her lips and melted into the evening’s fog. She dropped the cigarette she had been smoking into the shallow puddle at her feet; it extinguished with a sharp hiss. Her lip curled.
“You ready?” Wren asked.
Osprey turned. Her tattered, grey sweater scratched at her arms. Wren strode toward her, buckles clinking as she secured her leather armor. Her face was grim, though determined. Osprey knew that face, she appreciated it.
“Yeah,” said Osprey. She pushed herself away from the boulder on which she had been leaning, and spit into the puddle at her feet. “Geared up?”
Wren smacked her field pack. The canteen hanging from it swayed. Wren’s bootflask caught Osprey’s eye as it glinted in the soft light of the fog shrouded sun. She flicked her chin toward it: “Is that…?”
Wren nodded, a slight and subtle movement. “It’s always been with me… he’s… always been with me. Since day one.”
Osprey grunted. She pulled the sweater over her head and bent over to open her rucksack. She stowed the sweater, secured the worn pack, and slung it over her shoulder. When she stood, she adjusted her green leather tunic. Osprey gestured toward her DMR. “You mind?”
Wren snatched the rifle from its spot next to a rustic chair. She handed it over to Osprey:
“Ammo?”
“Yeah,” said Osprey, “this clip and five spares. Three total for my sidearm. Flares… you know… You?”
Wren pat the dagger hafts strapped to her hips. “Let’s go,” she said; her form began to fade into the shadows. “I’ll cover flank.”
“Copy that,” said Osprey. She started toward the road.
Lark watched from inside the medical tent as the two women left camp. Her heart sank into her stomach. She stripped off a pair of bloodied white mooncloth gloves, and tossed them into a bucket of soiled fabrics. Just more pieces to wash, she thought.
“The sloop’s not that far,” Sparrow told Lark, her soft voice muffled by a black surgical mask. “Blackbird, she’ll get here soon. And those two? They can handle themselves.”
“Yeah…” said Lark. She turned, watching as Sparrow redressed one of the burns on Kestrel’s arm. “…they better hurry.”
