Plum Jam

Sam hadn't meant to bump into the man when he was at the grocery store.

Honestly, Sam's entire day had been a bit of a mess.

Sam had talked to Steve about Riley earlier that day. And it wasn't that Sam didn't like thinking about Riley. Sam loved to remember the ridiculous dad jokes Riley loved to tell; he loved how Riley would find a way to tangle himself in Sam's personal space whenever he had the opportunity; Sam loved how Riley's arm always rested on his chest when they slept like a comforting weight.

But thinking back to that moment.

Back to the fall.

Sam always forgot how much pain that dredged up in him. How it could feel as if that guilt and heartbreak were fresh again, like a reopened wound.

Sam had asked to go home early when he realized how unfocused he was at the VA after that. He had gone home and realized he had no food, and without really thinking about how he could have just ordered in, decided to go to the grocery store.

And now, Sam was bumping into random strangers.

"Sorry," said Sam, frazzled as he noticed and picked up the plum jam on the ground that had thankfully not broken during the fall, "I'm all over the place. Here."

Sam extended the plum jam to the man.

The man wore mostly leather, with a baseball cap on greasy, long hair that needed a brush and a mask Sam assumed had to be heavy duty - maybe the man had a cold?

The man didn't look down at the jam.

No.

He stared at Sam with piercing blue eyes that pinned Sam where he stood. He stared at Sam as if Sam were the first person he had seen after a long coma. He started at Sam as if Sam had just moved mountains, had just performed a miracle.

He stared at Sam like Sam was the hottest man he'd ever seen in his life.

Sam's face heated at that thought, because, no, not everyone Sam bumped into at the grocery store thought Sam was hot. Sam wasn't going to feed into that idea.

"I'll... put it back on the shelf," said Sam, about to place the jam back before the man's hand instantly reached for the jam.

His hand wrapped around both Sam's fingers and the jam.

"Bucky!" blurted the man, still holding the jar of jam with Sam.

It felt like they were holding hands.

Sam couldn't find it in himself to let go.

"My name is Bucky," said the man as if he was only certain of that fact at this very moment.

Sam couldn't help but answer back, "I'm Sam."

Bucky didn't look down at the jam. He kept looking into Sam's eyes. Sam couldn't keep holding onto the jam with this man, could he?

"You like plums?" asked Sam, which sounded awkward when he was saying it.

"Do I - " Bucky started before turning his gaze to the jar, "... I guess I do."

Weird way to answer that.

"My Ma, when she was very young, used to go to this one stand in Constanța that had these fresh plums," continued Bucky, his voice soft, "She would look everywhere for plums that reminded her of home. When she found some we could afford, she would scrounge up whatever supplies we had at home and try to make găluște cu prune - plum dumplings. She could never make them as well as her bunica, but I always loved them."

Sam couldn't see the smile, but he could feel it. This man reminded of home and family by something so small.

"We had this pecan tree in the back of our house - we still do, my sister owns our family home now," Sam explained, "And my mama would have us help her pick pecans and make pralines. It was usually during a Saturday afternoon and our entire house would smell like pralines for days. She talked about how her own mama had taught her, and her mama's daddy had taught her. And when I miss her, sometimes I'll buy a thing of pecans and try to make pralines."

"You're beautiful," Bucky said, stumbling before correcting himself, "That's beautiful. That's."

Sam really needed to stop basically holding hands with this man.

Bucky was wearing these gloves, these fingerless gloves. Sam wasn't sure if he had ever seen fingerless leather gloves before, but here they were, on this man.

There was a distinct contrast between the gloves and Bucky's fingers.

The gloves were smooth; a soft, thick black leather that felt almost comforting.

Bucky's fingers were calloused to hell and back. They rubbed on Sam like a strangely addictive sandpaper. They radiated heat; they were almost scorching to the touch without the leather. But it was a nice heat; the type you nestled in after a long, tiring day at work.

Sam wanted to crawl into that heat and close his eyes.

Fuck.

Why was Sam still holding onto this jar?

"I'm not even sure why I'm in this aisle," Sam confessed, "I meant to just get myself a roast chicken."

Which sounded sad. It was a little sad. But hey, a man can live alone and eat pre-cooked chicken if he wanted to.

"They roast the chicken for you?" asked Bucky, as if he had never been to a grocery store in his life.

"Yeah. They do," said Sam, still holding the jam with Bucky, "I usually shred it up, put it on some rice with some veggies I cook with the rice. Shishito peppers and onions and garlic. Pretty simple easy meal."

"Sounds delicious," said Bucky, still gazing into Sam's eyes as if they were the only things for miles.

"It can be," said Sam as he finally, finally, let go of the jam, "I should probably get that chicken for it. Hope you like the plum jam."

"Yeah," said Bucky as he straightened his back and cleared his throat, "Yeah. Thank you for the jam."

Sam walked away from Bucky. He could still feel Bucky's gaze on him as he left the aisle.

Six | March 31st | Theme: Sam Wilson | Prompt: Partners/Missing Scenes | Words: 350 | Canon compliant | Not Rated | No Warnings | Gen, Sam and Steve friendship, a tiny teaspoon of Sam and Riley emotions that you can interpret however your heart desires.

The enormity doesn't fully sink until Sam's settled in a chair beside a hospital bed — until he's got a chance to catch his breath while he's sitting with Steve.

Everything's happened so damn fast over the past couple days,  but sitting in the strange silence of a hospital room, the weight of it all starts to hits Sam. 

Last week, his life was pretty ordinary. Or, the ordinary it's been on the other side of serving, anyway. On the other side of — the other side of coming home —  after Riley. 

 The ordinary it's been here in DC. The ordinary Sam had gotten awfully used to.

Last week. 

Today, he's sitting in an uncomfortable hospital chair beside Steve Rogers' beside. 

He's sitting here after working with Steve — and Natasha Romanoff — helping them stop a secret Nazi organization's plan for control that would've involved killing millions of people.

Sam can't say he'd have ever imagined that being something he could say about his life. 

But, then, this week's been filled with surprises.

Starting with Steve and those laps.

 Or, no, maybe the surprises started with Steve and the first conversation —  when he'd become a real person —  not a living legend.

Steve actually showing up at the VA was definitely a surprise. 

And, well,  surprise in an understatement if Sam's describing that knock at his door. 

And then — 

And then Sam had put his wings back on. 

And now he's here. 

And with time to breath and to think, it hits him that none of this feels like it's simply a chaotic few days. It doesn't feel like a single mission or a one-time break from his ordinary.

It feels like a change —  like the weight of the past few days was heavy enough to leave permanent marks. 

But. That probably makes sense. And it's probably a lot like what he'd said to Steve the other day. 

All moments from that early morning jog days ago to this one right here in a hospital room, and all the world-saving accomplished in between? If, after all that, Sam's life changes?

There's no better reason.

Loki

It was a quiet day on Asgard.  The weather was mild, warm without being too hot, and had clear skies.  Thor was taking one of his unusual days off the throne, and Sam and Steve were taking his place.  Thor and I had taken Thour and Nova to the courtyard to play with the Vulparev.  They were toddling around, using their familiars to steady themselves as they explored the garden, and Thor and I sat on a rug watching them, me leaning up against Thor as he played with my hair.  We had a little picnic set up, with snacks and drinks for us and the kids, plus some treats for the Vulparev.

We hadn’t been outside very long when both the children squealed loudly and ran to the other side of the atrium.  Thor and I sat up to see what was happening just in time to see the twins slam into Loki’s legs.

“Yes, hello.  It is good to see you too,” he said, crouching down and holding his arms out.  The twins both clambered up on him like he was a tree and he stood, holding them both on his hips.

“Brother!” Thor boomed.  “It is good to see you on this fine day.  Where are you headed?”

Loki carried the babies over to us, the vulparev flanking him on either side.  When he saw us laying on the grass he shook his head and gave a small roll of his eyes. “Oh good, my favorite people,” he snarked.

“I hear the sarcasm, Loki, and I wonder who you’re trying to convince,” I teased.

He smirked and took a seat, plopping the two toddlers into his lap. “I’m not really going anywhere, brother,” he said.  “I was just walking.  Are you slacking today?”

Thor chuckled, refusing to take the bait.  “Steven and Samuel are on the throne today.  They are more than capable of running the kingdom.”

Loki tsked and rolled his eyes, but as he did Nova started to climb up onto him again and cuddled against his side.  Loki’s eyes softened and he gazed down at the little boy.  “Well, aren’t you a sweet little thing?”

I smiled as I gazed at them.  Loki had always been so good with the children.  Back when Riley and Pietro had been born, I’d been a little nervous about Loki meeting them.  I liked Loki back then, though I didn’t know them very well.  I knew Thor adored his sibling but I also knew that Loki had long-held resentments due to Odin’s treatment of them.  It had manifested into a fight for the throne that kept repeating itself, Thor being the chosen child to rule despite not wanting to, and Loki believing that Thor was a bad choice.  I’d worried that with Riley’s birth, that resentment would come to a head again because now Loki wouldn’t even be the next in line to rule after Thor.

When Loki had come to meet the twins it was the first time I’d ever seen her presenting as a woman.  She was so beautiful dressed in a green and gold gown and when Thor placed Pietro into her arms, all concerns that she’d ever be a risk to those children melted away immediately.  She looked so maternal with him in her arms.  Almost as if motherhood was part of her divinity.

“Hello, child,” she cooed.  “I’m your aunt.  You’re not always going to have an easy life.  Your sister is heir to a throne and she’s likely to be very powerful.  But don’t worry. I’ll always be here for you.  I know what it’s like to have a sibling that is difficult to stand in the shadow of.  Perhaps I can teach you magic someday.  Would you like that?”

She flicked her fingers over Pietro’s head and green light danced on her fingertips.  Pietro cooed and reached for them, completely mesmerized by the light.

While Pietro was her favorite, she’d loved Riley just as strongly, and even though the twins didn’t get to see Loki constantly, it was enough that they soon learned that their aunt was often their uncle, and they were always excited when they visited.  Often when Thor returned home to us, after the twins had gotten their cuddles from their father, the first thing they asked was ‘Where’s Loki?”

Loki met Rebecca, Sarah, Rose, and Eddie at the same time.  This time he came and stayed with us at the tower for a few months.  He was so excited to meet the new clan, though Pietro was still the favored one.  We’d been a little worried about Loki staying for so long.  He did get bored easily and not everyone had fully forgiven Thor’s brother for his past transgressions.  Clint’s grudge in particular ran very deep.  I understood that - Loki had made Clint kill friends. People who he knew.  People who had family.

We had once again been proven wrong.  Not that Loki didn’t get bored and cause trouble.  He did.  A god of mischief has to mischief.  His pranks were all on the harmless side and mostly he was a blessing to have around.  He helped change diapers.  He would take Riley and Pietro to and from school.  The thing is, Loki is also the god of stories, and each night during that visit he would weave these amazing tales for Riley and Pietro that would even keep many of us adults enthralled.

I think by the time Billy was born, Loki was starting to think we were maybe breeding a little much.  He didn’t come down to visit right away, and in fact, he didn’t meet Billy until we brought the kids to Asgard when he was six months old.

Loki had met us on the Rainbow Bridge and after being set upon by Riley and Pietro, he came over to Wanda who was trying to soothe Billy after the trip through the Bifrost.

“Where is the new addition to the family?” he asked.

“He’s here,” Wanda said, showing Loki the little crying bundle in her arms.  Loki looked down at Riley and rolled his eyes.  “Your parents like making new Midgardians, don’t they?”

She giggled and nodded. “I got so many brothers and sisters,” she said.

“I thought having one brother was too many,” Loki said, making her break down into hysterical laughter.

He moved in closer to Billy and caressed a finger down his cheek.  “Oh, I know.  It’s a big scary universe and you’re just learning how big and scary it can be.”

He raised an eyebrow and looked up at Wanda.  “He’s full of magic.  Do you feel that?”

She smiled and nodded.  “I can.  I might need your help teaching him.”

The corner of Loki’s lips twitched up for a moment and he tickled Billy’s tummy. “Well, little one, it sounds like we will be working together.  That will be fun won’t it?”

Loki was there when Tommy was born.  We had so many kids by that point that even with the nannies, we wanted to have a backup on delivery day.  She came down while Natasha was sleeping and was the first person who was not a part of the polycule.  She sat for so long just gazing down into Tommy’s eyes, and when Tommy’s tiny little hand closed around her finger, for a split second I was sure I saw her eyes prick with tears.

When we decided to have Mar, I think Loki thought we were all done.  He came to see us when Mar was just a few weeks old.  Looking back on it now, I wonder if Loki could sense something in them even back then.  Loki never referred to Mar as a girl or used the pronouns she or her.  It was always child and they/them.  Maybe there was something deep in Loki’s magic and identity that like recognized like.  Or maybe that’s just how Loki addressed all the children and I just didn’t notice with the others.  Either way, he was smitten once again, and once again, he had a nibbling that adored him.

Thor poured Loki a glass of wine and offered it to him.  “It is a rare day when we are both off.”

“It has been a while,” Loki agreed, waving away the glass.  I could see why.  His hands were full and there was no way he’d put down one of the children before they were ready.  “But do not think I plan to spend the day reminiscing with you about the good old days.”

“I would never dare,” Thor joked.

“God, how is it that all our children just adore you?” I asked as I watched the twins both start to settle and lay in against their uncle, looking like they were about to fall asleep.

“They do have good taste,” he said.

“So people that like you have good taste?” I asked.

Loki rolled his eyes. “Nice try, Elise,” he teased. “But I said that people that adore me have good taste.  Do you adore me, Elise?  Are you completely infatuated with me?”

I started giggling.  “Maybe?”

“Oh, do you hear that brother?  Your dear wife is completely smitten.  How hard it will be for me not to steal her away from you,” he teased.

Thor laughed loudly.  “That will be a shame.  But - at least she will be staying within the family.”

I lost it completely, leaning into Thor as I hid my face.  “Oh no, she seeks comfort in my brother for I have scorned her.  A tale worthy of the ages,” Loki teased, making me laugh even louder, my sides hurting.

“Do not worry, brother.  As soon as I bed her, I’ll have her forgetting all about you,” Thor joked.

Loki grimaced and shook his head. “I did not need to hear that,” Loki said.  “Be away with you both.”

“Hey! We were here first!” I argued.

“Yes, but I am currently covered in small sleeping children and you are not,” he said. “So you’ll need to leave.”

We didn’t move, obviously assuming it was part of the joke but Loki waved us away.  “I mean it.  I have these two.  I’ll bring them back when they wake.  Go and bed your wife.”

Thor titled his head.  “Are you sure?  We don’t mind keeping you company.”

He shook his head. “You know how I feel about company.  Go.  I’ll bring them back to you when they wake.”

I leaned over and kissed both Nova and Thour on the forehead.  “Thank you, Loki.”

“You can owe me a favor,” he teased.

“Oh gods,” I laughed as I stood with Thor, making Loki laugh as well.

I collected up Sanguine as Thor picked up Mjolnir and the two of us headed back into the palace.

“It feels a little strange to bed you at the whim of my brother,” Thor said as we strolled back to our living quarters.

“Is that going to stop you from doing it?” I asked, looking up at him.

“Oh norns, no,” he said. “We should take advantage of the moment while we have it.”

I laughed and leaned up and kissed him, and he took the opportunity to scoop me up into his arms.  I squealed and laughed as he carried me straight to our bedroom, climbing the stairs to our oversized bed and laying me down on the mattress.  Thor started to slowly undress as he looked down at me, pulling on different drawstrings and unclasping buckles.  I simply pulled on one tie and my gown fell open, the fabric spilling out around me.

I'm a diehard Stucky shipper and I think the chemistry between Sam and Bucky is at least as strong as between Bucky and Steve, albeit in a different way. That relationship has so much potential and What If would have been a perfect place to explore it. But instead of Sam and Bucky bantering and bickering their way through adventures in the multiverse, we get Peggy Sue Saves All the Universes! I only hope that this is all a big red herring to trick us, and that Marvel has something incredible in store for Sam’s Cap. Unfortunately, though, they have a track record of treating the good characters with disrespect while elevating the arseholes to hero status.  

Sam and Bucky's relationship was definitely the saving grace of TFATWS. Probably the reason it makes sense for us as the audience to see Bucky hanging out with Sam so much is that we've seen in previous movies that Sam's morality is pretty much the same as Steve's. If we are to assume Bucky not only grew close to Steve because he was a sickly kid who got bullied but also based on the fact that he was good and righteous and fair... then it makes sense he would end up gravitating towards Sam as well. And their banter is hilarious.

That's perhaps the reason why it's such a hard pill to swallow to see Marvel acting like Saint Maggy is the female Captain now, since we know (because we've seen it, cause they wrote it that way!) that her morality does not match with Steve's nor Sam's or Bucky's. Those three are cut off from the same cloth.

We didn't get much about Sam in the series, so What If could have given him more time to shine. An ep focused on him, or Riley, his experience in the army, an ep where he's the one to break Hydra's control on Bucky instead of Steve... The options are endless and What If is supposed to be exactly that. But from what I've been told (I haven't seen S2), What If has become an excuse to push Saint Maggy down our throats. They changed the parameters of the series, but I didn't see a big push to bring her character back, so they just did it to... what? Outshine Sam?

We've seen a few female replacements for previously male heroes (Kate, Riri, She-Hulk, Jane). None of them try to be the female version of the male heroes. But with Captain Brexit? They have scenes in the series that are a literal copy and paste of the dialogues in the movies!! All Steve scenes, of course.

All that while Sam doesn't have one single scene as Captain America in the series (he was given the shield five years ago) and at least in one ep Bucky is used and discarded afterwards while the "heroes" of the episode do nothing to help him. Yikes.

To end this on a positive note... Cap 4 was delayed for 2025. That's plenty of time for them to see the reactions to What If, the ratings (I don't know if they were good or not, my petty side is hoping they're awful) and maybe, just maybe they'll learn their lesson that the MCU audience wants Sam Wilson as the is the only Captain America in Marvel.

“Breakfast isn’t a date,” Steve says, looking up at Natasha over his refrigerator door. “Is it?”

“First of all, I said brunch,” Natasha says, catching the bottle of water he tosses her. “There’s a difference. Second, yes, brunch can absolutely be a date. And it can be lower pressure, too. I thought that might help.”

“Lower pressure how?” Steve asks, leaning back against the counter.

“Well, it’ll be in the middle of the day. So no worries about the end of the night,” Natasha says, before taking a sip of water. “And Sam and I will be there, so it’ll be like a double date. Always less pressure.”

“A double date?” Steve echoes, eyebrows raising. “Wait, have you and Sam been going on dates?”

“That’s not the point, Steve,” Natasha says, brushing past his question.. She pulls a piece of paper out of her jacket pocket. “The point is, it’ll be low-stress, and I already set up. You just have to show up here tomorrow at 10 am.”

“I don’t know where this is.” Steve looks mildly puzzled as he reads the restaurant name on the paper.

“Yes, you do.” Natasha says, amused. “It’s three blocks from your apartment, around the corner from that bookstore you like. Google it.”

Steve blinks at her.

But he doesn’t question it.

Instead he says,

“I still don’t know about this,” biting his lip.

“It’s just a meal. ” Natasha puts a quick hand on his arm. “And I do think I got it right this time.”

“It’s not that I don’t appreciate the thought,” Steve hedges, “but with how much else I’ve got going on —“

“You can take a break from some of that, sometimes, you know. No need for 24/7 on call, anymore. It seems to me like —“ Natasha pauses, trying to be gentle, the way she’s gotten in the habit of being when she’s talking to Steve about Barnes. “Like he’s doing a lot better.”

“He is.” Steve swallows. “He really is.”

(Doing a lot better is a bit of understatement, from what Natasha has observed. And she’s made it a point to do a lot of observing.

“And that’s great,” Natasha says, squeezing his arm again. “So come to brunch. Enjoy yourself.”

Steve’s quiet for a few seconds, and Natasha doesn’t push it.

“This might surprise you,” Steve says, tone dry when he breaks the silence, “but I don’t actually have much experience enjoying myself on dates.”

“There’s a first time for everything,” Natasha says, grinning.. “Besides, you’ll have friends there, if nothing else.”

“I guess.” Steve still sounds wary, but he’s nodding. “Breakfast can’t be so bad.”

“That’s the the spirit,” Natasha says, releasing his arm. She watches Steve shake his head slowly, before frowning again..

“But do you and Sam go on dates?” he asks.

Natasha laughs. She doesn't answer the question.

She does get Steve to promise to show up tomorrow.

On her way home, she sends a text to Barnes, confirming he’ll be at brunch by 9:50 AM.

Belonging??? 👀👀

OKAY SO this one has been cooking in the back of my mind for a while, but I only just started writing it. It's very much a fic about grief and being haunted by the past, but in a very literal way. The basic idea is that some time travel nonsense happens and brings the Winter Soldier into the present, where a fight happens and modern-day Bucky ends up (seemingly?) dead. But in his last moments, out of desperation, he uses the trigger words and tells the Soldier to protect Sam, at all costs. So now, Sam's grappling with the loss of his partner (which also brings back a lot of complicated feelings about Riley that he never worked through) all while this former version of him that's missing just about everything that made him, him, just Will Not Leave Him Alone. And that forces him to confront the grief and trauma that he's never allowed himself to face and to learn how to lean on others for support the way he lets them lean on him.

Here's a snippet:

Their routine had become so natural, by then. Muscle memory. Moving in step without thought. Two pieces of a puzzle that fit together just right. Sam had only had that once before. And then Riley… He still couldn’t think about Riley, for too long.  Steve had come close, but it was never quite the same. They were partners, sure. Friends, absolutely. But they worked independently of one another. Two lines on parallel paths, always on the same page, always in agreement, but never overlapping. Steve never met Sarah or the boys. He never knew about Gideon. He never talked about his own life before the war, unless it concerned Bucky, and in turn, Sam never talked about his. The two of them were much alike, that way. So invested in solving other people’s problems, but determined to steer clear of their own, at any cost. Maybe they were too much alike. A real bond needed to be tested by conflict, every so often. Otherwise, it’d become too sanitized. Impersonal. Steve had been his best friend, but with each passing day since he left, it'd grown more apparent that neither of them ever really knew each other. They worked because of course they did, and they always had each other’s backs because of course they would. But that little, personal element was missing in a way that Sam didn’t notice until suddenly, he had it, and he was 28 again, with Riley’s voice in his ear, teasing that you’ve got to land softer, Wilson. I don't want to be carrying your sorry ass out of here, bridal-style. He plugged his phone into the AUX cord, and when Marvin Gaye came blasting over the truck’s tinny old speakers, he pretended not to notice that Bucky was humming along.
