"This is the fascinating story of Paschal Beverly Randolph, an African American who carved his own eccentric path in the mid-nineteenth century from the slums of New York's Five Points to the courts of Europe, where he performed as a spiritualist trance medium. Although self-educated, he became one of the first Black American novelists and took a leading part in raising Black soldiers for the Union army and in educating Freedmen in Louisiana during the Civil War. His enduring claim to fame, however, is the crucial role he played in the transformation of spiritualism, a medium's passive reception of messages from the spirits of the dead, into occultism, the active search for personal spiritual realization and inner vision.

From his experiences in his solitary travels in England, France, Egypt and the Turkish Empire in the 1850s and 1860s, he brought back to America a system of occult beliefs and practices (the magic mirror, hashish use and sexual magic) that worked a revolution. The systems of magic he taught left their traces on many subsequent occultists, including Madame Blavatsky and her Theosophical Society, and are still practiced today by several occult organizations in Europe and American that carry on his work. This is the fist scholarly work on Randolph and includes the full text of his two most important manuscript works on sexual magic."

His mother died when he was young, leaving him homeless and penniless in the city’s notorious Five Points slum district. He essentially taught himself to read and write. He also worked as a bootblack, a dyer, a barber, and a ship’s cabin boy and deckhand. Taking the job as a deckhand enabled him to travel through Europe, Asia, and Africa. His interest in mysticism and the occult led him to study with local practitioners of folk magic and various religions. He was allowed entry into circles in the East that at the time wouldn't give access to anyone white. So him being a black man from America that could walk into temples in Persia, India, and Africa and read writings denied to others was a big feat. When Randolph returned to America, he made it his mission to educate his people. He also expressed to black people that because of writings that he'd come across in his travel that it was best for black people to leave America and return to Africa and India and let the country crash and burn. In 1858 he established Fraternitas Rosae Crucis, the first Rosicrucian order in America. He influenced both the Theosophical Society and to a greater degree the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor. Yet they get credit for what he made available to not only the US, but also Europe. Randolph was so influential that Dr. Strange of Marvel Comics fame is said to have been based off of him. Which is more than likely the truth because of his big influence among the esoteric community. What we saw in the Dr. Strange movie, it was touched upon in a book that came out in 2000, "The Vodou Quantum Leap: Alternative Realities, Power, and Mysticism" by Reginald Crosley.
