Fasting - Get better, faster.
So I am Gujrati Jain and for us the most important festival of the year is Paryushan. Paryushan lasts for 8 days and in our house, we use to follow Paryushan very strictly.
Few things that we used to do compulsorily everyday were : 1. Puja - Wear dhoti and go to temple to worship 2. Fasting - This could be of various types, you can choose what kind you want to do based on your capacity. You can do Chouviyaar Upwas (not drinking and eating anything the entire day), Tivhiyaar Upwas (can drink only boiled water till sunset, not eating anything) , Ekashna (can drink boiled water till sunset and have food once), Biyashnu (can drink boiled water till sunset and have food twice). There are also restrictions on what food you can eat but I'll leave it for now. 3. Pratikaman - An evening prayer that is done in the temple. 4. No TV. This is the routine that we follow for 8 days. As you can imagine all this is not fun and definitely not easy to do. When I was a kid I used to dread when Paryushan came close (honestly, I still do!). I used to ask my mom why our festival are so strict and not fun whereas all other festivals like Ganpati, Diwali, Holi etc. are so fun. Everyone look forward to it. I don't remember what mom used to answer then but I have an answer now for it. In life it is important to have fun but at the same time it is also important to have some restrictions on yourself. Just because we can afford, we don't eat Burger, Pizza everyday. We know it is not healthy for us. Having self control is very important. Can you resist the temptations of this world? There are all kinds of unhealthy options out there. If you are not fasting, you have an option to eat unhealthy. If you are doing Puja and Pratikaman you are spending your time doing healthy things instead of an unhealthy option. Paryushan teaches you this self-control. It shows you that you have the power to select the right thing for yourself and not get persuaded by all these unhealthy options. It is also important to have balance in my life. Definitely you should have fun but at the same time it should be balanced by self-control.
It also makes me appreciate all the things that I take for granted. In ekashna we have to sit in one place and eat as much as you want. Once you are done then you cannot have food again. So next time when I munch in at random times of the day, eat random stuff 10 times a day I am mindful and grateful of that at the same time because I take this as a privilege that I have.
Fasting has so many benefits and this has been suggested 1000's of years ago. The fancy new trend of intermittent fasting is just a new polished version of the fasting that we do. There are innumerous health benefits to fasting as we all know. Apart from that fasting also helps you to be less angry, it increases your threshold of getting triggered. This is something that I have observed myself. You are much more patient when you fast.
Besides in general, all right things are difficult to do. It is easier to eat junk food but it is difficult to eat healthy food. It is difficult to meditate for 5 mins but it is very easy spending hours of your time on your phone. It is very easy to lie down in bed and wake up late but it is difficult to wake up in the morning and go to gym/walk. It is easy to burst out in anger and yell when someone simply cuts you in traffic but it is difficult to keep calm and smile at the person who just did that. So to conclude, when you are doing difficult things in life don't think why they are so difficult, be proud that you are doing the right thing and right thing is going to be difficult.
So today when I have done chouviyaar upwas I feel very happy to know my own strength that I can stay without food and water for more than 40 hours. Next time when I am thirsty and for some reason don't have water near me I am going to remember that I did it for 40 hours and I survived so no need to crib now. You are not going to die. Fasting helps you know yourself. Fasting helps you see the powers that you possess which otherwise you would have never noticed and that is the reason why Paryushan is not fun.

What is the significance of Uttam Kshama in Jainism?
Uttam Kshama, or the principle of supreme forgiveness, is one of the ten virtues (Dash Lakshan Dharma) celebrated during the Paryushan festival in Jainism. It emphasizes the importance of practicing forgiveness toward others and oneself. Here’s why it holds such significance:
Spiritual Purification: Forgiveness is viewed as a way to cleanse one’s soul of anger, resentment, and hatred. By forgiving others, we rid ourselves of negative emotions that cloud our spiritual growth.
Promotion of Non-Violence: Jainism advocates for Ahimsa (non-violence) in thought, word, and deed. Uttam Kshama embodies this by encouraging individuals to release any harm caused by others and respond with kindness and understanding.
Karmic Neutralization: Holding onto anger or grudges is believed to accumulate negative karma. Practicing forgiveness helps to neutralize these karmic effects, contributing to a soul's journey toward liberation (Moksha).
Fostering Inner Peace: By practicing Uttam Kshama, individuals achieve inner peace and mental harmony. It enables one to let go of negative feelings and develop a compassionate outlook toward life.
Building Stronger Relationships: Forgiveness strengthens personal and social relationships, as it encourages reconciliation and understanding. Jainism teaches that through forgiveness, we can create a harmonious and peaceful community.
Overall, Uttam Kshama is about rising above personal grievances, focusing on spiritual growth, and creating a compassionate, peaceful world.

What 10 days are important for Jain?
Paryushan literally means ‘abiding’. This 10-day festival mainly focuses on intensive study, reflection, and purification. At the end of this festival, devotees seek as well as grant forgiveness from all living beings. This festival also states the importance of Penance and how it benefits and cleanses our body.

Happy Paryushan in advance.. 🙏 પર્યુષણ મહાપર્વ ની આરાધના કરતા પહેલા અંતઃકરણ પૂર્વક મિચ્છામિ દુક્કડમ્ 🙏

Paryushan Parv
Heyy Guys….. This is the longest I have not written a blog since I started. The thing is I am super busy and super lazy these days. First of all, the bomb which suddenly fell on me was I am having my like most important common entrance test for college in next 15 days and for which I have not at all studied. Second I am jain and as paryushan parv is going on (about which I am going to tell you guys today) and I am having a 7 days straight ekashna and 8th day full fast. So yeah here I am trying to update a new blog after a long time. Peace out.
…………………………………………………….
Paryushan Parva is the king of all festivals for the whole Jain community living across the globe. Thus, it is also known as Parva Dhiraj.
This year it is from 15th August to 22nd August. Every Jain tries to follow the basic principles of Jainism during this festival, which are:
· Right knowledge
· Right faith
· Right conduct
These are the three most essentials for attaining liberation and Nirvana. We can easily understand the word Paryushan by breaking it into two parts: Pari means to recollect yourself and Vasan means at a place; Overall it means to know yourself or recollect yourself at a place in your spirit.
WHAT IS PARYUSHAN?
Paryushan is the time for making up and cleaning the dirt, which is in the form of karma collected on our soul. The festival stands for the celebration of spiritual awareness and is one of the most important annual festivals of Jain religion. The festival lasts eight days. Every year this festival of Paryushan starts on Shravan Vad 12th or 13th and ends on Bhadarva sud 4th or 5th (late August – September).
WHY IS PARYUSHAN CELEBRATED?
This festival gives everyone a chance for self-analysis and deep introspection. It also reminds us that life’s eventual and main aim is not the pursuit of materialism but to attain the state of Nirvana. Paryushan stands for some of the most important practices like:
· Nonviolence (Ahimsa)
· Engaging in self-discipline (Sanyam)
· Partial or complete fasting Penance (Tapah)
· Study of Scriptures (Swadhyaya)
· Introspection (Pratikraman)
· Repentance (Prayaschitta)
HOW IS PARYUSHAN CELEBRATED?
During Paryushan, Jains study religious books and scriptures which are based on principles of Jainism. Pratikraman is also performed by many Jains during the festival. The word Pratikraman is made from the combination of two words, Pra meaning return and atikraman meaning violation. Literally, it means returning from the violations.
During the Paryushan days, below mentioned are the five essential things Jains try and observe:-
· SADHARMIK VATSALYA: It means the welfare of the other fellow Jainis.
· AMARI PRAVARTAN: Following ahimsa or non-violence is also one of the major aspects of this festival.
· ATTHAMA TAP: Fasting for days is also considered as one of the major aspects. People also practice ayambils which means one meal of tasteless food, during the whole day.
Other forms of taps are:
· Ekashana: Eating only once a day
· Byasana: Eating twice a day.
· CHAITYA PARIPATI: It involves daily visits to temples, pilgrimage to holy places, paying respect and devotion to the Lord Mahavira through worship, prayers, and meditation.
· KSHAMAPANA: It is one of the most significant parts of celebrating this festival. Kshamapana means forgiveness. It involves asking for forgiveness from all the people whom we may have hurt in the past or present life. It also includes forgiving those who have hurt us and forgive them for their shortcomings and weaknesses.
· SAMVATSARI: The last day of this 8-day long festival is Samvatsari, and it is the most important of all. Most Jains try to have a fast and get together to perform the Pratikraman. This is also the day where everyone asks to ‘Forgive and Forget’ – Tass Michami Dukkaram.
Paryushan is not just a festival to rejoice and celebrate; instead, it is a ‘parva’ in which all Jains try to discipline themselves. People try to live with the utmost simplicity and try to purify everything, from food to clothes and thoughts to deeds. Jainis don’t eat underground beets and roots. Meals are avoided after sunset. People also do Vaas and Upwasa to purify their souls and body.
Unfortunately, the bad news is this festival of purity is nowadays taken as a burden by new generations. They only take it as a burden when they have to follow many regulations. They do not understand the foundation behind observing this festival. Still, the gurus and marasas are trying to rebuild the faith in the religion like it was used to be in the older days.
…………………………………………………….
I hope I told you something new today and this blog was worth reading and I didn’t waste your time!!!
