you need to see Waterparks before you die
I had the pleasure of seeing waterparks on the 21st of June 2022, a year after it was postponed due to corona, and I'd happily say it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.
I'd been a fan since late 2020 after discovering them from a Spotify playlist, and in the span of roughly a month they'd risen to become one of my favourite bands.
From their slightly electronic sound blended with hard riffs from 2012, to the pop punk sound of 2016 and the more pop rock sound they currently have in 2023, Waterparks have been consistent in releasing songs packed with a punch, whether that be through hard-hitting lyrics about mental health or the noisy sounds of 2023 single 'REAL SUPER DARK'.
Parx had artists Phem and Bad Suns open for them, both of which gave solid performances that constantly kept the crowd on their feet, and proved to be a great warm up for the headliner.
With 'Stupid for you' suddenly blasting out loud, the crowd came alive once again. Even though it was only the first song, it still felt like you'd had an entire show infront of you, the air full of an electrifying energy.
In my opinion, Waterparks shows double as comedies, as when there are breaks between songs there isn't a second you aren't left entertained. Charisma seemed to radiate off of front man Awsten Knight, who was constantly telling jokes and funny anecdotes, as well as a decent amount of crowd interaction. Guitarist Geoff Wigington and drummer Otto Wood also gave incredible performances, and although they didn't speak much you could still tell how passionate they were about their band.
There was a good mix of songs from what was then their most recent album 'Greatest Hits' as well as songs from their third album 'FANDOM', also with the single 'FUNERAL GREY'. At every show on this tour they treated audiences to their (at that point) unreleased song 'BRAINWASHED', as well as their 2016 song 'Gloom Boys' which sent fans who knew this one into instant excitement.
They closed the show with the encore of their hit song 'Turbulent', and if you know this song then you are aware of how hard crowds go for it. There had already been plenty of crowd surfing and a fare share of moshing, however as soon as the lights switched to green the energy instantly changed as the dark and trappy song began to play. Of course, no performance of this track is complete without Awsten's utterly demonic scream towards the end (a treat we get in the live version), which despite being very close to the end of the song still kept the audience hooked.
There was still a buzz in the air even after the show finished and the lights came on, endless excitement from fans eagerly discussing the show, and I immediately knew that it would be hard to top this amazing performance. I'd definitely reccomend seeing Waterparks live if you get the chance, as there is truly no one doing it quite like them in the scene at the moment.
