eternal love
pairing: chris redfield x leon kennedy
word count: 1.4k
summary: based on a piece made by one of my favorite chreon artists on twitter @PartTimeAgents
tw: suicide, please tread carefully
It had been nine hundred and forty three days since Chris and Leon had gotten married. The venue was small as Leon had requested nothing too extravagant however Chris had always been more traditional. He always pictured himself getting married and building a family with someone he truly loved, while that image changed for him as he got older, it didn’t change the fact that he was a hopeless romantic deep down. He’d been the one to propose to Leon. He didn’t have a ring yet, it was rash and nowhere near what he’d always dreamed of it being, but it was fitting for men of their status, never knowing whether or not they’d make it home in one piece– that is precisely what had spurred Chris on. Leon had laughed it off, claimed it to be delirium and kissed the tears away from his cheeks as he held him steadily, begging to whatever God there might have been to let both of them walk away from this with their lives. He’d been dead serious, later proving that to his boyfriend when he did actually pull out the ring. It was a moment that was so bittersweet, he could nearly taste the fear that permeated from Leon… the uncertainty of what was to come next, whether or not he should be the one that Chris was eternally devoted to– In the end, he did say yes. It was one of the only moments he’d ever had of unadulterated selfishness, no matter the hardships that they would face, Chris promised that they would face them together. Leon listened, even as his chest ached and the metallic twinge of blood coated his tongue, reminding him that he wasn’t alone in this body. He was a haunted house, filled with ghosts of the past that refused to let him rest. At times he felt as though he was dead right along with them, a walking corpse that only served the purpose of a weapon, not dissimilar to the bioweapons he’d sworn to defeat.
Only their closest friends were invited to the autumn affair. Neither of the two had many left, but there was enough. Chris cried when he saw Leon for the first time, they’d both been wearing matching suits and since neither of them had any living family beyond Claire, she was the one to walk him down the aisle. White roses adorned every corner, symbolizing eternal love and their new beginning together as one. They’d never been happier than they felt in that moment, even if they knew it wouldn’t last forever, they’d have each other and that was all that mattered. They danced the night away in each other’s arms, Chris was beyond sure that Leon had never smiled so much before. He swore from that day on he’d do everything in his power to make sure he saw it more often.
It had been four hundred and twenty-six days since Chris and Leon had adopted their first child. It was unexpected, but they’d discussed previously how they’d want children sometime in the near future anyway. Perhaps once they’ve retired and sworn off any possibility of danger or being swept away by an organization in need of saving. She’d been orphaned during one of their more arduous missions, clinging to the two of them for safety and comfort while the village around her was in shambles, slowly turning to ash as infected wreaked havoc on the living, another town being made obsolete in fear of widespread panic and calamity. It was infuriating how easily governing bodies swept those outbreaks under the rug, forcing victims into anonymity, completely wiping their meager existences from the face of the Earth. Missions like these always left Leon in a place of mourning, not that Chris didn’t feel it just as deeply, but the blonde struggled to cope with the weight of the world on his shoulders, especially when their newly adopted daughter looked at him with eyes just as tormented as his own. From that day forward, no matter how scared he or Chris was about becoming a parent, they agreed to learn together. For her sake.
It had been one hundred and fifty two days since the pair retired. Chris had been the one to suggest it. He noticed the sag of Leon’s shoulders, the dark circles that always resided just beneath his eyes, contrasting against the brilliant blue of his irises and making him look so much older than he actually was. It broke Chris’ heart. There were nights he’d wake up screaming, clawing at his chest to remove something that wasn’t there. He managed to hide it around their daughter, hell, he was the perfect father. He was kind and gentle with her, more so than he’d ever even been with Chris and he knew deep down it was because he’d known what he’d needed as a child too. Leon led a hard life and the least they could do now was spend the rest of their time raising their daughter, giving her a better home than Leon had had growing up himself. That was enough of an argument to get him to agree. They’d had more than enough to get by and to get their daughter through school. Chris thought that things were finally looking up for them.
It had been sixty days, eight hours and thirty two minutes since Leon had killed himself. Chris had been the one to find him. He’d been away for a few days at Claire’s with their daughter, he should’ve known that something was wrong when Leon asked him to go without him. He should’ve known that everything was off when he said that he wasn’t feeling well. He should’ve pushed harder to be the one to nurse him back to health, but he hadn’t even asked what he meant. He didn’t know now if he’d meant physically or mentally but it didn’t matter. He’d seen the man’s feet first, dangling in the air unnaturally… for a second he thought he was going to die right alongside him as his eyes trailed up the man’s corpse. He knew that Leon was long gone when he took in the man’s pallor and the way his neck was bent in a way that meant it had absolutely broken… How long had he suffered? Chris didn’t cry as he moved to cut his body down, yelling for Sophia to stay in her room for a few minutes. Chris didn’t cry as he cradled his lover in his arms, the rigor mortis making him remain in the position he died in. He didn’t cry until the ambulance had taken him to the morgue and he’d seen the note that Leon left for him on the bedside table. It was simple, but enough to make him angry. He cried and cried until he couldn’t breathe, until his lungs were seizing for air, morbidly he wondered if this is what it felt like as Leon gasped for air before the end– had it been quick? Did he have time to regret the decision, leaving his husband and daughter to live on without him? Chris read the note over and over again like a mantra, the words tasted like bitter bile at the back of his throat. “Chris. I love you. I’m sorry.” He couldn’t help but wonder if the man even truly meant what he said, and if he had, why would he leave. As much as it hurt, he knew exactly why. His husband had been suffering for the majority of his life and while it wasn’t fair to shoulder the pain onto those left living without him, Chris understood. He hated that he did.
As he stood now at Leon’s grave, white roses clutched in his hand as the sky threatened to open up on him, no doubt mirroring his melancholic state, silent tears made their way down his cheeks. He trembled as he grasped the roses like a lifeline, something to keep him tethered to the moment, to the reminder that Leon had broken his promise of a new beginning together, but Chris would never break his of eternal love. The older man blew smoke from his lips, head tilted toward the sky as he spoke to nothing, “In another universe… You loved yourself enough to get help.” He paused, closing his eyes as he flicked the cigarette away from Leon’s grave. “You loved yourself enough to love me too.” He swallowed against the harshness of his own words before placing the roses against the top of his grave. One last act of eternal love and Leon’s newest beginning.
