Millions of U.S. apples were almost left to rot. Now, they'll go to hungry families

It's getting late in the harvest season in Berkeley County, West Virginia and Carla Kitchen's team is in the process of hand-picking nearly half a million pounds of apples. In a normal year, Kitchen would sell to processors like Andros that make applesauce, concentrate, and other products. But this year they turned her away. ... Across the country, growers were left without a market. Due to an oversupply carried over from last year's harvest, growers were faced with a game-time economic decision: Should they pay the labor to harvest, crossing their fingers for a buyer to come along, or simply leave the apples to rot?

... While many growers in neighboring states like Maryland and Virginia left their apples to drop. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was able to convince the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pay for the apples produced by growers in his state, which only makes up 1% of the national market.

A relief program in West Virginia donated its surplus apples to hunger-fighting charities

This apple relief program, covered under Section 32 of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1935, purchased $10 million worth of apples from a dozen West Virginia growers. Those apples were then donated to hunger-fighting charities across the country from South Carolina and Michigan all the way out to The Navajo Nation.

Mike Meyer, head of advocacy at The Farmlink Project, says it's the largest food rescue they've ever done and they hope it can serve as a model for their future missions. "There's over 100 billion pounds of produce waste in this country every year; we only need seven billion to drive food insecurity to zero," Meyer says. "We're very happy to have this opportunity. We get to support farmers, we get to fight hunger with an apple. It's one of the most nutritional items we can get into the hands of the food insecure."

At Timber Ridge Fruit Farm in Virginia, owners Cordell and Kim Watt watch a truck from The Farmlink Project load up on their apples before driving out to a food pantry in Bethesda, Md. Despite being headquartered in Virginia, Timber Ridge was able to participate in the apple rescue since they own orchards in West Virginia as well. Cordell is a third-generation grower here and he says they've never had to deal with a surplus this large.

At the So What Else food pantry in Bethesda, Md., apple pallets from Timber Ridge fill the warehouse up to the ceiling. Emanuel Ibanez and other volunteers are picking through the crates, bagging fresh apples into family-sized loads. "I'm just bewildered," Ibanez says. "We have a warehouse full of apples and I can barely walk through it." "People in need got nutritious food out of this program. And that's the most important thing" Executive director Megan Joe says this is the largest shipment of produce they've ever distributed – 10 truckloads over the span of three weeks. The food pantry typically serves 6,000 families, but this shipment has reached a much wider circle. "My coworkers are like, 'Megan, do we really need this many?' And I'm like, yes!" Joe says. "The growing prices in the grocery stores are really tough for a lot of families. And it's honestly gotten worse since COVID."

"It's the first time we've done this type of program, but we believe it can set the stage for the region," Kent Leonhardt, West Virginia's commissioner of agriculture says. "People in need got nutritious food out of this program. And that's the most important thing." Following West Virginia's rescue program, the USDA announced an additional $100 million purchase to relieve the apple surplus in other states around the country. This is the largest government buy of apples and apple products to date. But with the harvest window coming to an end, many growers have already left their apples to drop and rot.

Winx, Dark rewright (inspired by Fate...wanting to fix it)

Season 2 plot:

So, there would be three main arcs/subplots based on season two, with trauma recovery as a main theme, and the overarching plot.

-Darkaar is gathering followers, and using already existing problems to recruit followers.

-So, as a backstory, emporor of Eraklyon, Erendor III, made a law criminilizing marriage between sibblings-in-law, sex and marriage between step-sibblings, adopted sibblings and adoptive parents with adoptive children, as well as uncle-niece, aunt-nephew marriages. This law is due to a trafficking ring (because the magistrature is the administration of their equivalent of the DASS/orphanages/child protection services, the magistrature are the de-facto "adoptive parents" of these kids, but they were grooming them, so when these kids became legal adults and the corrupted elites began to demand sexual favors, well...proving rape made itself difficult) and a string of political marriages meant to undermine his authority. It allowed to actually do something against the sex-trafficking, as well as allowed many families to actually prosecute some abuses. The law is extremely popular amongst average Eraklyonites, and helped bring popular celebration to the monarchy, further consolating Erendor's authority. Also, since the goal of many of these unions was political intrigue, the nobility isn't keen to fight for it.

-However, there's an underground (litterally) province of Eraklyon mostly populated by the Dark Elves of the Pyroxene Caves. Now, elves are mostly sexually binary obligate queuers, with seperate queues for males and females. Their family structure is monogamous, and in their culture, it's considered a moral duty for a widow or widower to marry their sibbling-in-law. Non-reproductive incest between sibblings is considered a form of sex-ed, and seen as quite innocent. Strict endogamy is observed in elite and pariah circles, but the average Dark Elf is forbidden to participate in cousin or uncle/niece marriages, and tend to in fact see them as morally repugnant, especially given that uncles and aunts play an important role in child-rearing. Upon annexation of the province by Erendor III's grandfather, the Emporor swore to uphold the customs and priviledges (in the sense of perculiar laws) of this province. In exchange, the Dark Elves offered obedience to Eraklyon criminal law (civil law stays provincial), military allegence and must pay their taxes to the Eraklyon crown.

-Now, this obviously creates tension, as the majority of Dark Elves see this as a huge infrigement of their provincial rights, while their elites see this as a severe threat to their power. So, of course, they don't locally enforce the new law, while regularly sending dignitaries to convince Erendor to exept their province, which he doesn't, because it would simply make the corrupt nobility move to it.

-Trade with the main country has slowed down, and tensions are high.

-That causes the decision amongst some Eraklyonite authorities, not necessary royal, to send their own, mainstream Eraklyonite police forces, but because the province is of little economic and political interest, they don't bother sending the most professional and qualified individuals, which eventually leads to of course these cops go rogue and start treating the local Dark Elves like garbage. The Dark Elves aren't opposed to torture per se, but to them, being threatened with it for something as innocent as sucking their sibblings is unbearable opression worthy of risking their lives for.

-Despite this, most know they are militarly weak, and thus, when Darkar offers them an allience, they accept. In exchange for their support, he would grand them some of his magical weapons.

-Now, Darkar also has kidnapped the pixies of Andros, and sucks away their magic until they die so he can increase his own might.

-Mini fairies are an important part of the economy and ecology of Andros, also having an enemy get magically stronger is not good.

-With Andros facing an ecological and economic crisis, as well as Eraklyon facing the very real threat of a civil war, that's why princess Aïsha of Andros decided to go on a quest herself to retreave them. Her parents agree to it, because that's a part of their sense of duty, and they even insure she has the best conditions possible for it.

-Most outsiders of the caves, well, besides the pixies and the Dark Elves, don't know of Darkar.

-With that out of the way, the story begins proper.

-So, Aïsha tries to retreave the pixies, but fails miserably, she ends up able to reach Alfea, and talks to the headmistress about this grave danger.

-Faragonda informs at first Tecna and Timmy about this, who go on a secret plan/race against the clock so they can build a PC with closed data connected to a camera and talky-walky, but not that cannot exchange data with any other computer or communication device.

-In the meantime, Erendor is to a point, were to avoid civil war, he decides to send Sky on a diplomatic mission, in which he'd serve as a hostage/spy.

-So, it all eventually culmunates in a "rescue"/scout party comprised of Aïsha, Bloom, Stella (both are powerful against dark creatures), Sky and Brandon.

-The plan is:

-Have the information necessary to create a precise map of Darkar's lair

-Rescue the pixies

-Sky would stay in the Drow city for a spell as a diplomatic hostage/spy/consort, anyways, find a way to avoid civil war.

-Brandon is here as moral support/practical gear.

-Tecna and Timmy are the ones commanding the vehicle as well as noting all the information the cameras and ultrasound geometer of Darkar's lairs, as well as keeping in touch to make sure things are alright.

-That's the premise.

And no one enjoyed the festivities of dressing up and getting in the Spooky Day spirit like Andrea Fletcher. So naturally, she got dressed up in the most wild costume she could find and spent the whole day prepping to host a big Spooky Day bash at Casa Fletcher.

Andros and new baby Fletcher were too small and too cranky to participate in the festivities this year, but the rest of the Fletcherlings were in perfect form as each one of them got dressed up in extravagent costumes, as deemed appropriate by Queen Dre. Least surprising costume of the bunch was Cordelia, all decked as a princess. Of course 😉

It was a great turn out from all their friends and extended family, but unfortunately, Dre made an error in her invite list. Specifically someone she was meant to leave off: Heath Graff.

2. Beyblade gift art

I have received two art pieces from laz if i recall correctly. Ill mention the secret santa gift i got from her, which was a group drawing of all the main girls of the series. Getting to see them all hanging out and having a good time was really nice! I think it was my desktop bg for a while

I dislike her and her constant penchant to get in trouble (which many times I have to get her out of), her stubbornness, her lack of regard for others' privacy and the fact that she just does whatever she wants AND USUALLY GETS AWAY WITH IT BY SMILING THAT FUCKING SHARK-LIKE SMILE OF HERS. She exasperates me so much.

Admittedly, she does have some good qualities too. For example, she's... intelligent. She's a really good Hearts player, and one of the few who actually means it when she says she'll always trust others and try to make the right decision, even if puts herself in more danger. She's a good person; I admire how she won't let the borderlands transform her into something she is not. And, despite how worried her sister Andro is that I'll somehow find it to be a problem, I actually do like how mischievous she is. It makes it fun to be around her.

So yeah, she has like two good qualities and two thousand bad ones. Bad trumps good here, which is why I dislike her and every single second spent in her presence. A nothingship. We are nothing to each other. Just people who occasionally insult each other and participate in games together.

OOC: he was going to make a joke about how he can't wait for the second stage of the games to begin so he can get rid of her, but it's something that terrifies him so much that he can't even joke about it. He thought he'd left having panic attacks behind after finishing med school, but it turns out, he hasn't.

Into the wilds but they are superheroes

Andro / Pit Viper - A vigilante with a heart of gold. The hero that patrols his area is corrupt and requires a ´protection fee´, something that Andro and his dad couldnt afford, which results in their store getting robbed. Andro originally participated in street fights to earn money to support his dad, but has recently turned to vigilante-ism (and stealing from the rich). He hopes to take down and reform the currently very curropt hero system. His powerset is being able to fight with a range of different martial arts.

Quill / The Scarlet Tanager - A villain with a pension for mischeif. Her father stole and weilds incredible magic, some of which she inherited. But he ultimately rejected her because of her ´weak´ abilities. At first she started stealing out of spite, trying to show thay she can still be powerful even without using her powers, but now does it as a regular hobby. Her powerset is magic based teleportation, telekenisis, and other stuff, but only uses it in emergencies

Last movie? I have not been to the movies in way too long. It might actually have been Avatar, which I was finally forced to watch over Thanksgiving at the insistence of family, and which I hated.

Currently reading? Harrow the Ninth-- Yeah, yeah, I got sucked in finally. Though I'm struggling more with this book than I did with the first, I think because I find the voice less compelling; it's taken me a few weeks.

Currently watching? Are we counting the dozens of series I've started, gotten halfway through, and then wandered away from? Anyways, I think the most recent is Mr. Queen, or maybe Under the Queen's Umbrella, both of which are quite good.

Currently consuming? Nothing atm but the last thing was a nice hot chocolate-- I figured out that the best way to get it nice and rich was to melt mini chocolate chips with some sugar and half & half in the microwave at 15 second intervals, mixing in between until well-integrated, and then slowly adding milk to get it up to volume. Next time I'll try the frother.

I saw an interesting answer about a question regarding female ejaculation and sharing this to make a note

The main issue that sexologists have had with measuring sexual pleasure is finding the right indicator. It's easier to measure men's sexual arousal. If a man becomes sexually excited his penis becomes erect, his balls ascend, and his butthole clenches to support the prostate. When a women becomes sexually excited her "just in case" tampon gets soaked, her clitoral crus becomes engorged and flexes outwards opening up the vaginal opening, and her cervix is pulled inwards to make room for the penis. It's harder to see. When a man orgasms he ejaculates, it's easy to see. If a woman orgasms her vagina contracts rhythmically to pull the semen inwards and retain it, and her female ejaculation the penetrating partner away because she's done with him until the child support case nine months later.

If her vaginal Ph deems the sperm baby-worthy she'll have her second orgasm 10-20 minutes later, where the cervix openly slightly and the uterus contracts and flexes upwards to push uterine fluid into the recto-uterine space through the Fallopian tubes, sucking the sperm into the uterus, while the labia sweep in any external remnants. It's basically internal ejaculation. The buildup up fluid in the recto-uterine cavity is why women should urinate after sex.

So the problem of measuring female pleasure is that the full sexual experience, of both primary and secondary orgasm/ejaculation, is divided into two episodes separated by about 10-20 minutes. A lot of early sexologists at the Aylo Sex Lab at 7777 Decarie Blvd in Montreal only measured pleasure during actual copulation, so they tended to record female pleasure as being half of male pleasure. It's why a lot of their publications tried to roughly double the amount of penetration that their female participants received, it was a proto-feminist attempt to equalize sexual pleasure and move it away from an andro-centric view. Problem was, the methodology of the research it was based on was faulty, and those women were getting double pleasure.

So honestly, if you want a high degree of good data for this fucking problem, I say measure internal ejaculation. Get an IUD that has Bluetooth capability and a flow sensor, so you can measure how often and how strongly a woman's vagina ejaculates sperm into her.
