~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a grueling day at work, you left to go pick up some aspirin for a headache you’d acquired, and luckily, you’d remember that you'd ran out of meds at home. So you gathered your jacket, purse, told the next shift goodnight as you left. Hayden must’ve slipped in at some point in the night through the lobby because you didn’t see him all night and typically he at least waved to you or asked you to come up, but tonight you hadn’t seen him at all.
You stopped in at the pharmacy closest to work, hoping to pick up the pills and a coke to wash them down with, so that the pills could work while you drove.
After grabbing the pills, you some how ended up on the candy and greeting card aisle, looking for a candy bar to splurge on and maybe grab a stupid card for Hayden, to just thank him for being a sweet friend. Mid way through your long browsing, you heard two people laughing a few aisles over. They weren’t loud, it was just empty in the pharmacy except for the cashier, you, these two people, and one other man you’d passed earlier. You smiled a bit to yourself, happy for the young couple.
That was until the laugh continued and you recognized it.
Frowning, you made your way around the corner of the candy and went over to the source of the sound, your body moving on a mission, against your will. You weren’t sure you were ready for the sight you saw. Jason, and a girl you’d seen maybe once or twice before, in the condom aisle. He had two boxes in his hands and she was laughing and touching all over him.
“Jason?”
His eyes shot up to you as his face lost all humor and the girl turned to you as well, her face starting to falter.
“Y/N,” he breathed, staring at you. “What are you doing here?”
“Headache. Need meds. What’s--uh, what are you doing?” you asked, trying to be polite, a strangled smile painting on your face.
“Just...Uh…” he answered, putting the boxes back on their hooks. “I’m just…”
You shook your head, then nodded. “No, that’s okay. You don’t have to explain anything to me. I’ll just be going,” you said, smiling and turning, your cheeks turning red with embarrassment and anger and the tears welling in your eyes.
“Y/N, wait,” Jason said as you were turning, he moved past the girl with him and reached you, gently grabbing your arm.
As soon as you looked up at him, he had a sorrowful look on his face and his hand dropped from your arm.
“I’m sorry,” he offered. “We just...we started talking and--”
“Jason...I really don’t need an explanation. We’re not dating anymore.”
“I know but…”
“But it’s only been a little over a month?” you added, a little bit of sting in your voice and guilt colored his expression.
“What do you want me to say, Y/N?” he asked with a shrug, his hands shoved in his jacket pocket.
“Nothing,” you assured. “I don’t need you to say anything, Jason. You live your life. We broke up for a reason,” you reminded, surprised at how well you were holding together, not crying or your voice cracking.
He nodded, stating, “Yeah, you’re right. We did. We broke up because we aren’t compatible, but me and Samantha, we--”
“Jason, save it,” you said. “I really don’t need to know how I was such an awful girlfriend and she’s fantastic. I get it. You don’t fucking love me. Move on. Jesus, why do you have to pour salt in the wound?” you snapped.
“I’m not trying to do that, Y/N, I just thought you deserved an explanation for--”
“For what? Sleeping with some new chick a month after we get out of a two year relationship? I think the picture is pretty clear, Jason. Thanks though, for belittling my intelligence yet again.”
At that, you turned and stormed off to the counter, grabbing your candy and coke on the way, checking out, and rushing to the car before he could see the tears on your face. As you started the car though, and put it into gear, you didn’t want feel the pull to go home. You didn’t want to go back to the place that was saturated with Jason’s memory. You needed someplace else. But where could you go at one in the morning?
With hope in your chest, you drove out of the parking lot and headed for the hotel, taking your bag of headache remedies and purse with you. You ran through the lobby, earning some looks from staffers and guests alike as you bee lined for the elevators, waiting impatiently for them to descend to pick you up. Finally, it arrived and you slipped inside as fast as possible, luckily, you were the only one on the elevator, and your few tears had already dried. The elevator seemed to have a personal mission to go as slowly as possible, however. The doors closed after what seemed like a decade, and it took twice as long to reach the sixth floor, where you bolted for Hayden’s room.
You stood there and knocked, praying he wasn’t asleep yet. No answer came for a while.
After a few minutes, you gave up, turning and ready to leave when the door unlocked and opened.
“Y/N?” he said, seeming tired.
At the sight of his face, the dam broke, and the tears burst hot onto your face. Ugly weeping began and Hayden’s face went from tired to alarmed.
“Oh my god, are you okay?” he asked as he opened the door wider, letting you come in.
You nodded as you stepped past him, standing in the little entry way of his suite, noticing he was clad in a cute dark green t-shirt and plaid pajama pants.
“Last I checked, sobbing in the middle of the night at a friend’s place isn’t a good sign for ‘okay’,” he said, a small smile pulling at his lips and you couldn’t help but let a small laugh come out at his joke. He walked closer to you and put his hands on your biceps, gently holding you. “Y/N, what’s wrong? What happened?”
“Ja--Ja--Jason,” you stammered, the ugly sobbing continuing.
“Here, come here,” Hayden instructed as he pulled you to the couch. “Do you want water?” he asked.
You shook your head and held up the bag, showing him you had a coke. He took the bag, pulled the drink, got a glass and ice, and poured the drink for you and came back and you sipped the drink.
“Shh...Y/N, calm down, calm down, just...collect your thoughts, take some deep breaths,” he offered, sitting across from you and stroking your back comfortingly.
You took his advice, taking a few deep breaths, sipping the coke, and slowly, the hysterics died down.
“You okay now?” he asked after about five minutes, a friendly smile on his face.
You nodded.
“Do you want to talk about whatever happened?”
You nodded. “I...I was out getting some aspirin for my headache, after work. I heard someone laughing, and I recognized it as Jason so I went over to him...and I find him with Samantha, a girl that used to sort of hang out with his friends, and they’re…” You stopped, feeling your throat swell again. You took a deep breath, stopping the release of fresh sobs. “They were checking out the condoms,” you said, rushing it out of your mouth as your face went into your hands, some more tears coming, but not quite as violent as they had.
Hayden shushed you as he scooted closer and put his arms around you, resting his head on your shoulder as you were bent over.
“Shit, Y/N, I’m sorry…” he offered. “That really sucks. He’s a dick,” he responded.
You slowly sat up and his arms dropped from you as you shook your head.
“No. He's not. He’s got a right to date or do whatever he’s doing...It’s just that it’s only a month after we broke up and he’s already moving on? What does that say about us? I mean...we were together for two years. If it was six months, I could see it, sure we weren’t that close. But we lived together, we shared a life, we talked about getting married.”
“I can’t imagine how much this hurts you,” he said. “But if it’s any consolation, he’s an idiot.”
You laughed at his comment. “No, he’s not,” you said.
“No, he really is. You don’t just leave someone and then start dating a month later. Like you said, you two were pretty serious for a long time. If he’s sleeping with her, then...you know, maybe it’s been going on for more than just tonight, ya know? Either way, it’s really shitty what he did and you didn’t deserve that, so I’m sorry that happened.”
You waved it off. “The worst part was how he went on to say how good he and Samantha were, and how we weren’t compatible.”
“What? He said that?”
“Verbatim. I saw it, told him I was sorry for intruding, and as I was leaving he made it a point to try and explain to me why he was with her, what he was doing, as if I was a fucking idiot. I know what he’s doing with her, there’s no point to rub it in.”
“God...You know, I know you’re hurting, but in all honesty, I’m glad you’re not with him any more, he seems like a grade a asshole who doesn’t deserve your time,” he noted.
“Thanks,” you said as you took his hand and squeezed, smiling at him and he smiled back. “I know...That little comment tonight reminded me of how he always made me feel stupid and...worthless, you know? But it’s whatever. He’s moving on and so am I.”
Hayden nodded and smiled at you. “Good. You should.”
After a moment of staring at your newly found best friend, you came to your senses. “I’m really sorry for bothering you,” you suddenly offered, shaking your head and standing. “I shouldn’t be here bugging you in the middle of the night.”
“Woah, woah, where are you going?” Hayden asked as he stood with you.
“Home. My headache is worse now that I cried and haven’t taken anything. I’ll just go home and crash,” you said with a sigh.
“Wait, why don’t you just take the aspirin here, and when you’re feeling better, you can go home? I don’t want you driving when you’re upset and still have a headache.”
“That’s nice but no, I’ll be okay,” you assured.
“Really...If you left here upset, and something happened because I let you go, I’d never forgive myself. Just stay, relax,” he instructed.
“Okay, but just for a little bit,” you said as you took off your jacket and got the aspirin out, taking it with the coke. “Care if I lay down for a minute?”
“Go for it,” he said, gesturing vaguely to the bedroom, housing two beds.
“Thanks,” you murmured as you wandered over and gently sat down, then laid down, getting comfortable and trying to ease your throbbing head.
After a while, you hadn’t realized you were drifting off to sleep. You must’ve been so tired from the long day, headache, and the Jason ordeal, to really notice. Hayden heard your breathing as it went from normal to sleeping, even, soft breaths. He was on his bed, playing on his phone, trying not to make noise or disturb you. At the sound of your slumber though, a soft smile grew on his face as he glanced over to you.
He got up and went to the closet to grab an extra blanket he had requested a long time ago, draping it over you.
“Night, Y/N,” he softly said as he crawled into his bed, clicking out the lights and quickly falling asleep in the darkness, letting the sounds of your breathing lull him to a comfortable sleep.
Neither of them slept. Kylo lied awake in his bed, wondering what to do. He broke professionalism for what? A crush? Love? What the hell was love anyway? His parents certainly didn’t fucking know what it was. He packed with thoughts clouding his mind, wondering what he was going to do.
Rey packed, trying to hold back the tears. She thought it was something she had done. Perhaps she broke professionalism and it was a test and she failed. He didn’t say she was fired but she doubted he would fire her here. She had no idea though. Did she do something wrong? How should she fix it?
Hux noticed the tension between them as everyone met in the lobby to check out, but thought better not to say anything.
They rode back in silence, Kylo still treating her to his amenities, and happy to do so. She did nothing wrong, Kylo just knew he was no good for her. The plane ride back was easy and when they got to the airport, Kylo made sure she rode with him, to assure her safety.
He walked her all the way to her door where he meekly said, “Have a good weekend.” Then turned to leave, red in the face as he shoved his hands in his pockets and left.
Finn ran over as soon as he saw Rey was home.
“How was it?” he asked, excited for his friend.
“Paris was wonderful. Kylo showed me all around. Took me to all my favorite places. We had dinners together….but it was also a waste of a week because the client cancelled their contract.”
Finn sat confused on the couch as he frowned. “Oh? Why?”
“Because the president of the company felt me up and Kylo punched him out.”
“Wow. Nice. So he’s not a creep after all,” Finn assessed.
“Depends on your definition,” Rey muttered as she slumped back into the couch.
“What do you mean?” Finn demanded. “Did he hurt you? If he hurt you, Rey, I swear to God, I don’t care how big he is, I’ll--”
“He kissed me, Finn.”
Finn sat back.
“Did...did you not want it?”
“I did...I don’t think he did. He left in the middle of it and we haven’t exactly spoken since…”
Finn sat in silence, not sure how to assess the situation.
“Maybe he didn’t want to take advantage of you.”
“Maybe…”
-----------------------------------------------
The following Monday, Kylo acted as if nothing had happened and went over a new art design with Rey. Inside, Kylo was dying, screaming and hoping Rey would just put him out of his misery and Rey was a ball of confusion, anger, and hurt. But they carried on as if nothing happened.
Eventually, they were back to being good friends. After the initial two days back, the awkward, forced ignorance washed away and they got back to professionalism and back to being friendly.
Things were so good, that when a major photographer position came up, Kylo asked Rey if she knew anyone for the job. She immediately offered up Finn. The gig was an amazing deal. He would work for Travel Magazine, living in every continent for a year to get a picture of their seasons. It was his dream job. The contract was written up, signed, and everything was ready to go. Finn had even gotten his apartment sold for the trip by mid May. Rey was going to miss him very much but they both knew he was young enough and ready enough for the adventure of a lifetime. For the time being, he was staying at Rey’s until Wednesday, when his journey began.
Rey invited Kylo and Hux to dinner at her apartment for a friend’s night on Friday, for the last weekend before Finn went away.
Poe, Finn, Rey, Kylo,and Hux were all having a decent time. It was slightly awkward at first as they all came from different backgrounds but soon Kylo tried to turn on his charm that he had to use in business meetings and the conversation flowed better.
Everyone was laughing when Finn looked at Kylo and said, “Man, you’re lucky Rey think’s you’re better now.”
“Better? Better how?” Kylo questioned as his gaze slid to the brunette beauty next to him.
Finn and Poe were still chuckling as they explained, “Well...dude, you aren’t exactly a free spirit.”
“I’ll admit I’m the first person that needs to lighten up but...Rey couldn’t have found me all that atrocious, right?” he wondered, anxiety building within him.
Rey’s face got red as she realized what they were talking about.
“Let’s just say that Rey had a certain idea of you when she first met you,” Poe casually said before sipping his white wine.
“What was that?” Kylo asked, slightly intrigued. He thought i was like a crush. He was so wrong.
Finn and Poe shared a look before bursting into laughter.
Rey, Rey, what was it?” Finn asked before he continued, “oh, oh! I remember, you said, ‘Kylo would have a stick up his ass if it wasn’t for Hux already being there’.”
Kylo and Hux’s faces immediately twisted into insulted. Hux’s face contorted into a smooth even face as he stood and said, “Thank you for dinner, I think I’ll be taking my leave.”
Kylo stood and informed, “I think I’ll join you.” The difference between their tones was one was uncaring while the other was hidden hurt.
“Kylo, no,” Rey pleaded as she stood. “Hux, please.”
They nodded slightly to everyone and left before Rey ran after them.
“Kylo, wait!” she begged as she ran out, her face red with guilt and shame.
“Why? Is that what you think of me?” Kylo demanded as he spunt of face her, pointing back toward the apartment. Hux didn’t wait though, he was already down the hall, going into the elevator. “That I’m just some stuck up asshole?” he asked, his voice rasping with anger.
“No,” Rey started. “Not at all.” Rey’s heart was breaking but she couldn’t deny that she said those things.
“So, you don’t think that?”
“No.”
“But you did.”
Hux called from down the hall, trying to hold the elevator, “Ren!”
“Yes, but--” He started to turn around but she grabbed his arm. “I didn’t know you as well back then, okay?”
“Does that make a difference? You thought I was a monster, how does that make it better? That you didn’t know me. I’ll admit I’m not the cheeriest person, but who was there when you passed out? Not the rude people in there you call friends.”
“Kylo, please….” she pleaded, tears pooling in her eyes as Hux called out again.
He held his arms out, begging her to tell him what to do. “What, Rey? What? What do you want me to say? I’ve bent over backwards for you, I’ve done everything for you and….and...just forget it.”
This time he walked away for good.
Rey returned to her apartment and shut the door, leaning against it. Poe and Finn averted their gaze.
“What the hell is wrong with you two?” she demanded. “He’s been nothing but nice to me and you two twist that and use my words against me. I thought you were my friends. Instead, you insult my boss? How could you do that? He’s a good man.”
When they had no way to defend themselves, Rey shook her head, hot tears running down as she went to her bedroom and slammed the door before throwing herself on the bed and crying herself to sleep.
Monday came and went. Kylo didn’t enter Rey’s office all day though. In fact, Rey wasn’t sure he even came into the office. Rey was worried she’d pushed him away for good.
-------
“What is this?” Kylo asked as he looked at a contract.
My son, Bradley, he’s a photographer…” Edwin, the head of the board, began to explain.
Kylo narrowed his eyes as he looked at him and said, “We already have a photographer for this job.”
“Yes, well Bradley would prefer it and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll take this contract,” he threatened. Kylo knew that if he didn’t support Edwin, he could be voted out of his grandfather’s company.
Clenching his jaw then unclenching it, cursing repeatedly in his head, he said, “Fine.” Shoving the papers at him, he leaves in a haste.
-------------
The next day, mid day on Tuesday right before Finn was set to leave, one of the girls at HR called Finn to tell him he no longer had the job. News reached Rey and she stormed into Kylo’s office.
“What the hell?!” she demanded, her face growing with heat.
Kylo knew instantly what it was about and got up and shut the door.
“Calm down,” he said, gesturing a lowering motion with his hand.
“Don’t tell me to calm down, Solo!” she shouted. “You knew about this!”
“Yes, but I just found out yesterday,” he clarified.
“Don’t use your company voice with me. Did you do this because of the shit he said the other night?”
Kylo’s ego as hurt as he said, “No, I’m not that petty. I fought the board on this and I didn’t win, okay?”
“He’s already sold his apartment, all of his stuff, to go on this trip!”
“I’m sorry, Rey! My hands are tied...I know it’s shitty, but I fought them…”
“Fine.”
About to leave, she turned on her heel and went to the door, her hand on the doorknob when he said, “Besides, what he said the other night wasn’t his fault, was it?” That comment went straight through Rey, piercing her chest.
She turned and asked, “Did Paris mean nothing to you?”
“Paris was business, for you to think anymore or less of it would be foolish,” he replied simply.
Rey bit back tears as she wrenched open the door and slammed it, the sound making Kylo jump and close his eyes shut as he tried to fight what he was feeling.
Was feeling this way such a crime? Why did he have to love her? She was so good...and sweet. Why did it have to be her that he loved?
Why did it have to be him that she loved? All he did was hurt her. She gathered her things and left early, rushing home.
--------------------------------
Kylo arrived at his parents apartment, gifts in hand for his mom as Han led him over to the dining table.
“What was so urgent?” Kylo asked formally as he sat down with his father.
“Son...Rey got a job offer, in Los Angeles.”
The news hit his gut like a battering ram but he didn’t flinch.
“Okay.”
“What would you like me to do? She’s under your contract…”
“Offer it to her,” he said evenly, no emotion in his voice, making Han worry.
“Ben, don’t push her away,” he said suddenly, reaching across the table for his son.
“I’m not…It’s a job offer, Dad. She’s an employee.”
“We both know it’s more than that.”
“Just do it,” he insisted as he stood, kissed his Mom, then stormed out.
Han sighed, “That went about as well as expected…”
That evening, Rey got the call...
-----------------
The following morning, he was in her workroom, demonstrating what he wanted, wrapping up a thought when she quietly said, “I’ve been offered a job in LA.”
Gauging his response, she watched him intently. She had a plan - if he seemed upset by the news, she’d stay and work it out. If he seemed indifferent, she’d leave.
“Oh?” was all he said.
“Yeah, DreamWorks asked me on as a storyboard artist. It’d be triple the pay here and I’d work with some amazing people.”
“I see. If it’s about the money, I can increase your salary, Rey,” he said simply.
“It’s not about the money…”
Rey internally begged, “Please! I’m giving you a chance to save whatever it is we have here.”
He wanted to ask what it was about. The daring question would give him all the answer he needed but he wasn’t naive. He knew what it was about. He didn’t want to hear it come from her. He knew what she was doing and he was going to play the perfect part - the uncaring, uninterested other party.
She was pitting the same thing against him. He wanted to see if she’d even consider it, now that she had, he knew that she was leaning towards leaving, she was just waiting for his okay.
“Go, Rey,” he thought. “Get as far away from me as you can,” he nearly begged while simultaneously screaming, “Stay with me, stay by my side...”
“Sounds like a good offer.”
Those few words destroyed them both.
“Yeah…”
Rey left work that day, dejected. She knew what she had to do but was unsure she could do it. She told Finn the predicament and he encouraged her to take the job in LA. She called Han and said yes to the job and he got the wheels in motion.
In two weeks, she was ready to go. Finn would take her apartment for a few months before he found steady work out there and would join her as soon as he could. Han said he would remain her agent and they would Skype, text, and call.
Rey had cut any communication with Kylo except for informing him of her leave. On Monday when she gave him the news of her departure, he seemed neutral. He simply said, “Thank you for your time at the company. We will miss you. Good luck in your endeavors.”
The speech so practiced, she knew he’d given it to dozens of artists, and it made them both sick. He wanted to scream, to beg her to stay. But for what? For him? He didn’t deserve love, affection...He didn’t deserve happiness. She wanted him to ask her to stay. All he had to do was ask, but he didn’t. The fact that he doled out that speech, made her stomach twist uncomfortably.
After the first Monday, they didn’t talk. Kylo had no purpose to work out new designs with her if she was leaving and she had no questions on her current designs. At least, that’s what they told themselves. They both knew that seeing each other would hurt too much.
------------------------
Kylo’s heart was sinking all morning with each passing hour. He wanted to see her more than anything but knew the pain of seeing her would be too much and he’d ask her to stay. WWIII was waging inside him as he tossed around letting her go or begging her to stay. In the final hour, he remained in his office.
Around 4:30, a woman with a large package came into his office.
“Mr. Solo? I have a delivery for you. Where shall I put it?” the petite blonde asked.
“Please sit it on my couch. Thank you.”
Kylo waved it off until he noticed it looked oddly like the first painting Rey ever gave him. Immediately, he jumped up and ran to the package, tearing at the brown paper.
In a gold frame, the portrait of his grandfather, the same one that was over his parent’s mantle, except the thing that stuck out, was Kylo. Anakin had his hand on Kylo’s shoulder and they were both smiling. Emotions coursed through him like a river. First the grief hit him, of losing his grandfather, then the sentimentality that Rey put into this piece touched straight through to his heart. A small whimpering sound escaped his mouth as he couldn’t hold back a tear or two that fell from his eye.
