Mike character analysis - Season 2

This is a continuation of my in-depth Mike character analysis. The first season can be found here, here, and here. I am basing this off the theory that Mike started realizing his feelings for Will were different than Lucas and Dustin by the end of season 1. By season 2 I think Mike realizes that he's gay and in love with Will. His behavior honestly makes no sense to me otherwise. This is in 5 Parts.

When season 2 picks up, it has been almost a full year since the end of season 1. We learn 2 key points right away - that Will has been having flashbacks to the upside-down since he got back and goes to the doctor regularly. This seems to frequently interrupt his school days and causes Mike in particular to worry. And the second point is that Mike has undergone some serious behavioral changes. This is understandable considering the trauma the group went through in season 1, but it's important to note here that the trauma isn't over. They are still going through it. And it's because of my first point - Will is back but still not ok. There is no resolution or time to grieve and it's one of the main reasons for the change in Mike.

Mike is getting in trouble at school a lot, his grades aren't good, and he has an attitude problem. A thing his parents are losing their patience with. His punishment is to get rid of his toys and when he suggests they have too much emotional value, he gets mocked by Ted who says they are just toys. Mike not only has to get over his feelings about what happened but he isn't allowed to be attached to things. Something that stands in stark contrast to Karen's behavior toward an 18 year old Nancy in season 4, when she tells her she can keep her stuffed animals. Nancy is allowed to be emotionally attached. Mike isn't. He is being sent a clear message. His emotions are an inconvenience to others. And the reason for this brings me to my next point.

Mike is shown to talk to El on the radio regularly. He's counting days and seems to just be talking about random things i.e. telling her about his day. Now he doesn't know that she's listening. As much as he says he believes she's alive there is no proof he actually believes this. He does absolutely nothing to go look for her. And he has no reason to. He saw her "die". There is no indication that this isn't true. And the most important note that I think I will make in this whole analysis is this - This behavior isn't cute or romantic. It's grief. And we know this for A FACT because we have seen this exact same scene before - with Hopper in season 1. Hopper calls his ex-wife repeatedly. He is often shown popping pills and drinking excessively. He isn't coping with the death of his daughter well. It lead to his divorce. His ex-wife moved on, re-married and had another kid. And Hopper is stuck by himself with his grief. So he calls her sometimes. Just to check in and he tries to reminisce. It's his way of holding on to his daughter and their life together. And no one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, interprets Hoppers behavior as cute and romantic. He is clearly struggling and depressed. And the fact that he's an adult here combined with the fact that we know he has substance abuse issues is enough to help the audience realize that Hopper isn't ok. He's not trying to get back together with his ex-wife. He's trying to keep the connection to his daughter alive. EVERYONE WATCHING UNDERSTANDS THIS.

So then WHY is it that when we see this same scene play out with Mike, it's suddenly just adorable. Because of the only thing that is different - Mike is a little boy. Between his parents and the GA, Mikes feelings are once again oversimplified and dismissed. He's a little boy of course he must be in love with El because why else would he call her? He's a teen of course he has an attitude. This way of thinking is seriously problematic and it's a large part of the reason why Mike isn't coping well - because no one notices or understands his pain, and certainly no one is helping him go through it. It is emphasized by the Wheeler parents that Mike needs to just get over his attitude. They've been patient long enough. And while he's at it, he needs to get rid of his toys - parts of his childhood - because it's time to grow up now (the phrase "man up" is heavily implied in these conversations). Because the Wheeler parents have this attitude, the GA does too. We've seen this EXACT THING before, too. Lucas and Dustin suggest in season 1 that Mike has feelings for El, so he must even though there is no indication from his behavior that he does. Mike has a bad attitude, well his parents say it's time to get over it so he must. He calls El all the time - must be because he's in love with her. Couldn't be grief. Doesn't matter that we saw Hopper do it, doesn't matter that we know this is normal behavior for grieving people. People often talk to or write letters to the dead. It can be a coping mechanism, but it can also be unhealthy if the person can't let that go and this is exactly what we see Mike doing.

It's a way to over-simplify Mike's feeling and it's entirely because it makes people uncomfortable. So if the GA (and his parents) don't want to see his grief, it's easy to dismiss it as just a little teen angst. It's easy to dismiss it as him having a crush on El - because why else would he be talking to a girl. I know I say this a lot but it's because it's important. People can't understand why anyone talks to someone of the opposite sex if it's not because of romantic interest and it carries over into their interpretations of Mike and El's relationship. They can't understand why he would be talking to her and the reason he does is this - he feels guilty that she "died" helping him find his friend. This is less palatable than a simple crush. Grief is complex and ugly so we need to hide it away.

It's so much easier to dismiss his feelings as the most simplistic answer, but this not only is the reason why Mike is struggling to process his emotions, it's extremely insulting because it implies that he doesn't have any complex feelings to think about. And people dismiss it because he's a boy. They don't dismiss Hopper - he's an adult and is entitled to his grief. They don't dismiss Nancy's attachment to her stuffed animals - it's cute that she wants to keep them. It's Mike specifically who isn't allowed his feelings. Which is why I will never accept or respect the point of view that Mike loves El because he called her a lot. Because Mike's well-being and what he wants and needs isn't being taken into consideration at all. This is a theme that continues through the rest of the series with every character and the audience - except for Will. Part 2 here.

1. What is your s/i's name & pronouns?

Shepherd goes by he/him, as well as any dog related neos you can think of!

2. How similar is your s/i to you? Are they a carbon copy, completely different or a mix of the two?

Shepherd is pretty different compared to me. He's definitely not a carbon copy, but he still has some aspects of me, such as parts of his backstory, his disabilities, etc.

3. Does your s/i have a backstory yet? Or is it still in the works? If it's done can we see it?

I don't have his full backstory written out yet, but I'll make a separate post about that when the time comes.

4. How did your s/i feel when they first met your f/o(s)? How do they feel about them now?

Shepherd first met Simon in college. He was very warm and friendly toward Simon, but he wasn't entirely sure how to feel about him, since Simon was so closed off.

Now, Simon and Shepherd both have a mutual understanding of each other on a deeper level than most. They bonded over their shared experience with depression and anxiety, as well as with being disabled in some way.

5. Do you speak about your s/i in first or third person?

It honestly depends. Sometimes I'll speak about my s/i's in the first person, but most of the time in the third person.

6. Has your s/i undergone any design/story changes since they were first made?

A few! Mostly design changes, but I changed his backstory to better fit in with the story.

7. Give us 3 random facts about your s/i

He has issues walking, so he uses mobility aids. Usually a cane, but if it's bad enough he will use other aids. He's also really sickly, so he's in bed all the time trying to recover from whatever sickness he has at the time. He has some tattoos, and quite a few piercings!

8. Does your s/i have any kind of powers?

Sadly, no.

9. Does your s/i have any hobbies that you don't have?

He likes to sew. He's tried to sew his own clothes, but it takes so much time and he has such a hard time finishing projects that he's decided to never do that again. Instead, he does smaller projects that are much easier to tackle, like repairing clothes or sewing patches on clothes.

10. How many s/i's do you have? Do you use the same s/i for multiple f/os or make completely different ones?

I have so many s/i's, most of which I haven't announced on Tumblr. I use the same s/i for multiple f/os, as long as they're under the same media source. For example, I would use Shepherd for any CoF f/os that I had.

11. Does your s/i have one outfit they're always seen in or multiple?

He has multiple that he's seen in. Usually they're just t-shirts and jeans, but occasionally he'll dress up.

like all the characters, Hank develops over time. idk if you'll like him by the end or not but i guarantee your opinion of him will be different than it is now

I mean, I just finished season 4, and as far as I can tell the main changes Hank has undergone is that he no longer says "b**ner" all the goddamn time (good) and takes his police work more seriously (bad). Unless he changes a lot in season 5 (like, bare minimum quits his DEA job), I'll be disappointed if he survives the series.

And I like the show! In the followup to that post, I made a quip about hating every character, but that's an oversimplification. Most of the characters are complicated people doing bad things in complicated situations, and the extent to which they are bad people is interesting narratively. Like, Walt. Walt's also been a bastard from episode 1, not because of any innate malice, but because he's a slave to the ways he expects himself to perform masculinity. It's why he won't take the job at Gray Matter¹, it's why it's so easy for Gus to manipulate him with that "a man provides" speech, it's a big part of how he's able to lie to himself that he's doing everything for his family (a half-truth at best), and that's all interesting to watch!

But Hank…. Well, Hank's on the backfoot with me to begin with: He's a cop, specifically a fed, and an explicitly racist fed no less, so I hate him from the get-go. Now, in real life, I think all cops should die, but I can bend my principles to enjoy fictional cops as characters (e.g. Dale Cooper). But Hank, just, idk, sucks. He's a obnoxious charisma vacuum who only gets less obnoxious when he becomes more seriously dedicated to his role in law enforcement. I didn't realize the show expected me to like him until he started getting an arc (which surprised the hell out of me), and I still genuinely have no idea why the show thinks I should like him. Like, he's a cop who does cop shit, and that's…kinda it.

I'm also definitely not engaging with the show the way the creators intended (I'm pretty sure you're supposed to sympathize with Walt early on, and I super do not lol), so maybe there's something likeable about Hank that just isn't clicking for me, but idk, I'm not seeing it.

[1] There's obviously more to that story—Walt's history with Gretchen—but unless S5 gives more details on that, it seems from what little the show's revealed that Walt is probably in the wrong on that one.

Erlind Ebonsong, formerly and at least still in High Rock officially, known as Erlind Madieve, child of Lisende and Antoc Madieve, younger sibling to Coran and elder sibling to Alesinne and Wylin. Dragonborn, Companion, bard, relic hunter, and spellsword. I'm not entirely sure when I made them, but I love them dearly and absolutely both send them through a meat tenderizer and want the happiest ending for them.

2. Newest OC.

Nathari, Queen of the Reach, daughter of Jarl Igmund and his father-disapproved Reachfolk lover Esana. She's close behind Erlind on the favourite oc list, tbh, and is the one I made to satisfy my interest for messing with Skyrim's politics. She's got her fingers in a lot of pies despite only sticking within the Reach for the overwhelming most part. She's a little younger than Erlind chronologically, and was about seven when the Markarth Incident happened and her mother fled to the hills with her. (And Jarl Hrolfdir told Igmund that Esana and Nathari were killed by other Reachfolk 'as traitors' in the chaos.)

3. Oldest OC.

Vezha is the oldest out of my current TES OCs, I should specify. Both irl and chronologically, actually since he's the father of one of my others. I'm not sure when I made his original version, but he was afab and genderfluid at one point, with purple tattoos, and he was part of my previous set of story-based OCs. I don't think I ever landed on a questline for him to be the protag of, however. What I know for certain is that I liked the plot hook of his backstory notes, so I adapted him to fit into my current set and since then he's undergone some other changes as well. (For instance, he used to be Volgash's uncle and not her father, which I've kept in that because of his amnesia and context clues he thinks he's her uncle for a while.)

4. Meanest OC.

Larus. This picrew makes him look so dang young, but also if I recall my timeline correctly he is one of the younger ones in the batch. Raised in a bandit camp that really screwed up his perception of other people's worth to each other, then spent a bunch of years with a vampire den, then joined the Dark Brotherhood. He is a vampire, I just based this picrew off of his in-game preset that I haven't updated yet. He's an ass unless he wants something from you, and even then he'll still probably be an ass, just more of a subtle one.

5. Softest OC.

Okay, so this was a hard choice, considering Erlind's a devotee of Mara and makes a point of being kind to everybody that they can. However, I think this one has to go to Volgash, Vezha's daughter. She's the baby of the group, had the best childhood on a whole even considering her dad's amnesia, and until Plot Stuff starts happening at Sarthaal, she's sailing by nicely. Volgash is maybe not the nicest of my ocs, but niceties are fickle anyway and that role would change on a daily basis depending on if Larus or Janora or Nathari wanted something from someone.

6. Most Aloof/Standoffish OC.

So I think at this point I'm only missing Janora, but alas, here we get a double-Larus, with Nathari and Erlind coming up several paces behind for their own reasons. Larus was taught to believe as a kid that nobody has any worth except for how they can be useful to someone else, and that continues on into his adulthood even after the vampire den were...well, I haven't done much development of him, but at least the vampires were nicer about that.

7. Dumbest (Affectionate) OC.

This was a hard one, because a lot of my OCs are smart, and similarly they've all got elements of complete idiot, as most people do. However, I'm gonna give this to Erlind, because they're very, very, very emotionally oblivious. I don't call the romance in the fic a 'glacial slowburn' for nothing.

8. Smartest OC.

So...she may have gotten caught at Helgen, and whatever it was she did to make the Cyrodiil Thieves Guild send her to Skyrim, but Janora is very good at what she does. She can read people very well, which is only compounded by the excellent education she got before the events that caused her to join the Thieves Guild. She's extremely logical and pragmatic, which makes her a bit slow in action, but when she does something - for the most part - it's because she's thought it through first.

9. OC I would be best friends with.

So. We're going Erlind here because for one thing they're the one I know most about, but also they're the most of these OCs like me, and I think we'd enjoy rambling back and forth at each other and commiserating on having epic mothers and wonderful not-each-other best friends.

INTERVIEW WITH JENNIE ESDALE AND FEEDBACK ON ATTENDING THE BRAVE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

Jennie Esdale (she/her), Program Director, Outreach Development & Education at Theatre Aquarius and event organizer for the 2nd annual BRAVE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

OUR INTERVIEW:

1. Explain what the BRAVE NEW WORKS Festival is and how it impacts and inspires artists in the Hamilton area.

JE: BNW is a gathering of artists to share work in development, to come together with each other and audiences in conversation. It is a window into the work and into the artists. It is brave, because it is so vulnerable to share yourself no matter what stage of development the work is at. I have found the most joy in seeing artists come together and to support the work of another artist, to have conversations around the process, and to see an artist really take a chance and share themselves in new and surprising ways.

2. Were you the original developer of this festival? If so, how has it influenced you and what expectations do you have set for the festival itself?

JE: I understand that there was an original Brave New Works festival some years ago at Theatre Aquarius, though I have no information from the past. I spearheaded the inaugural year last season and this year I am joined by the wonderful and immensely talented and generous Karen Ancheta and it is so excellent to work with her. We share values around artist care and the kind of work that we love, the kind of conversations we want to share in.

I think the Festival influences my awareness of the breadth of the work in our area. There are so many wonderful people and artists here, and it is very rewarding and joyous to bring people together and to celebrate in this way.

3. How do artists in the community become a part of the festival (application process)?

JE: The first two seasons of Brave New Works have been curated, though we are very excited to continue to expand the festival and meet new artists in the community. As we grow and find so much success in our second year, we plan to continue curation, but to add a submission component next season.  

4. Theatre Aquarius has undergone some significant changes in its play/musical selections as well as how it presents theatre to the community. As many theatre-lovers in Hamilton can attest, this is both refreshing and exciting. How does it feel to be a part of that change and how it reflects on an audience's desires to see new creative content in such a well-renowned space?

JE: I think it has been very profound at times, particularly when we have been able to present new work. Living, Canadian playwrights and storytellers reflecting on the moments of which we are part, make the work so very visceral and relevant. Theatre is a living thing. Having so many artists come together to take risks on new work is very exciting.

5. What happens after Brave New Works? Do these artists receive any opportunities to workshop or perform them? How does Theatre Aquarius provide support for these endeavours?

JE: There are several works in the Festival that have a relationship to the theatre- some are actively being workshopped, some are being supported in other ways, like use of development space, or Creators Reserve grants, or Company in Residence. Some of the artists are our theatre school grads, some have worked on the main stage. There is a strong sense of community and that we are part of something meaningful, that we are building together.

I hope, too, that audiences gain a window into the process of creation, and that this is interesting and maybe illuminating, or even, as I have found so many times, thrilling. It can be so thrilling to watch someone go right out of their comfort zone- to be brave- and to try, be willing to fail, and to give us access to their guts, and their toil, and their passion, their love, and the very beautiful thing that makes us human. And that we do this together- we share the room, the air, the breath.

Thank you Jennie and the team bringing this festival together for its second year.! It is so important to have these opportunities to share new works, gain feedback and watch art come to life in front of an audience.

I had the pleasure of attending the second day of the Brave New Works Festival. Once seated in the Aquarius Studio space, the audience was taken by Aeris Körper’s Sid Ryan Eilers (they/them) through their prologue (The Daydream) from Kiss the Stormy Skies, which was performed at last year’s Hamilton Fringe Festival.

Sid continues to show exquisite precision in their movements and embodying the music choice for the piece as well. After the performance, Sid led the group in a discussion about how artists workshop and collaborate. This particular group shared interesting reflections as actors, writers and dancers and then other members of Aeris Körper led the audience in a movement workshop. The participants used every part of their body to familiarize themselves with their bodies and then expanded further to feel like trees, clouds, even a pinball. The interactions were freeing and fascinating. There was a message here about the body being the receptacle for the dance journey which I found quite profound. It was a joyful experience. A wonderful thing to observe.

We then travelled to the Theatre Aquarius Director’s Lounge and were introduced to Jay Turvey and Paul Sportelli, two creatives who have been working on a musical called 33 ⅓  since 2013.

This ten year commitment has found them workshopping and presenting versions of their coming-of-age/coming out journey and we were treated to a few numbers from it. To say “I need to see this. Now” is an understatement. It featured incredible vocals from Turvey and relatable lyrics and a very catchy score from Sportelli. You can hear influences of the classic rock/pop you grew up with and there are definitely elements of Sondheim in the lyrics. I felt a delightful Jeanine Tesori (Shrek: The Musical, Fun Home, Kimberly Akimbo) vibe from the overall presentation. The songs showcase a love for music artists such as Joni Mitchell and David Bowie and the show’s overall message is about connection, changing times and acceptance. The artists continue to improve upon the book (script) and I certainly hope this is staged in Hamilton in the near future.

After a brief changeover, the audience listened to a short scene from emerging playwright Danielle Boissoneau’s work Nbwaachaa Nokomis; a one-act play about working through the alienating feelings of being an Indigenous person.  The writing has a very “day in the life” feel to it and was Boissoneau’s first time sharing this work with an audience.

The scene we watched allowed us to feel the character’s anxiety going through her day as her faceless ancestors watched over her. I am very intrigued by the dance/movement scene that was discussed only in this session. Plays such as this are a necessity. They have such power to teach and allow audiences to understand others in an impactful way. This work has a voice that deserves to be heard.

We headed back to the Studio Theatre for two more musical presentations. The first was A how-to guide for the not-yet viral, created by Michael Kras (book, lyrics) and Stephen Ingram (music, lyrics). This musical is about the current use and abuse of social media and how it reflects on society as a whole. Kras and Ingram have been working on this piece through a residency at Theatre Aquarius for the past year and presented the huge audience that turned out a 20-minute look into this hilarious and tongue-in-cheek musical.

There is notable influence from some of the great musical theatre writers/composers here and I couldn’t help hearing the delightful electro-pop influence of Jonathan Larson (tick…tick…BOOM!, RENT). Kras’ writing ability continues to shine as he pens natural dialogue between characters and effortless transitions between songs. Actor Greg Solomon particularly stands out with his song (Don’t Hold It In) which was played acoustically by Solomon himself and backed by the ensemble (including Kras and Ingram!) It was a beautiful piece that really resonated.

Having followed Kras’ work for many years now, I am eagerly anticipating a fully staged version of this musical. It has a great deal to say and, in its brief 20 minute showcase, already has the power to make audiences really pay attention. 

Our last reading/performance came from Brandon McGibbon and Co. and their piece The Nine Lives of Ross Fordham. This combination of folk music and local history was very impressive. The musical is about the unbelievable true tales of the family’s grandfather, a seemingly ordinary man, who constantly seemed to cheat Death starting from his birth back in 1927.

The songs we heard were well versed and had plenty of comedic moments. The beautiful harmonies are what really sold me. I am intrigued with how this would be fully staged and I hope there are more polished versions to come. The audience was full of family and supporters who would have stayed for the whole musical if allowed. This is a musical full of heart and stories that have the potential to live forever. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for this production.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Hamilton has always been a hub for entertainment and has a growing mandate to let all artistic voices be heard. Festivals such as Brave New Works allow artists to showcase new ideas, original stories and receive opportunities to workshop and gain feedback from their potential audience members. There is an enormous wealth of talent in our city and I cannot wait to see how these works flourish and reach more audiences in the future. A huge thank you to Theatre Aquarius and all the artists who took a chance on themselves and bravely showed their creative work to us all weekend long. It was a great experience to be a part of.

I think part of the issue with this is that as of pretty recently my writing has undergone a pretty big change. I guess the best way to split it is almost like a pre and post March 2020 distinction.

Pre March 2020 I’d say the definition of winning (is flawed) from back when I was still writing for The 100. This was only my second multi chapter** thing I had ever fully completed and until very recently was the longest work on my account.

Post March 2020 is where I’m at now and I’ll give it to what is currently the longest work on my account, Shattered Glass. I’m going to be stuck in my Star Wars writing pit for the foreseeable future lol.

I’m a strong believer in the fact that no matter what you create, you impart part of yourself onto it no matter what. So it’s a bit hard to say. I’d say a big one at least is that my relationships in my life definitely influence the way I write relationships in ways that run very deep and would make it impossible to remove my own bias from them. Even if what I’m writing is fundamentally different there is just no way for me to write them without being in reference to the important relationships in my life (both platonic and romantic) and at points go so far as I directly reference things I know these people would pick up on within my writing (looking at my beta reader rn - she knows this lol). Also the heavy use of the domestic fluff tag, it’s an indulgence of mine for sure.

Probably a lot of the angst. Or at least it’s blown completely disproportionately in my writing because it’s a fun thought exercise.
