FOTD #065 : parrot waxcap! (gliophorus psittacinus)

the parrot waxcap / parrot toadstool is a mycorrhizal fungus in the family hygrophoraceae. it is widely distributed in the grasslands of western europe, the UK, iceland, greenland, the americas, south africa & japan.

the big question: can i bite it?? it is edible & has a mild taste !!

g. psittacinus description :

"the parrot toadstool is a small mushroom, with a convex to umbonate cap up to 4 centimetres (1.6 in) in diameter, which is green when young & later yellowish or even pinkish tinged. the stipe, measuring 2–8 cm (0.8–3.1 in) in length and 3–5 mm in width, is green to greenish yellow. the broad adnate gills are greenish with yellow edges and spore print white. the green colouring persists at the stem apex even in old specimens."

Also called Gliophorus psittacinus or the parrot toadstool, this mushroom is edible, but generally not considered worthwhile due to its small size and sliminess. It has a mild taste and odour, and fruits from late summer to autumn.

MEET MY BABIES

The first one is called a entoloma hochstetteri (or a werewere-kokako) and you can find it in New Zealand

The second one is a mycena viscidocruenta (or a ruby bonnet) and you can find it in Australia and New Zealand

The third one is a rhodotus palamatus (I can’t find a nickname for it, so I will lovingly nickname it the brain) which you can find in eastern North America, northern Africa, Europe, and Asia.

The fourth one is a hygrocybe acutoconica (or the persistent waxcap mushroom) which can be found in Europe and North America

The fifth one (and my favorite :D) is called a boletus edulis (or a penny bun) and is found in Europea and North America.

The sixth one is called a gliphorus psittacinus (or the parrot toadstool) can be found in Northern Europe.

The last two are both different varieties of amanita muscaria (or fly agaric) can be found in a lot of places (mostly the Northern Hemisphere)

The toadstool bitty is named warts! Yarrow found her three months after the crash. The bitty popped up in the underground right next to his foot and bonded with him immediatly

Warts is a sleepy baby who spends most of her time in thistles bandana snoozing. She does parrot words occasionally but they’re pretty sure she isn’t intelligent enough to actually know what they mean. She does know she gets treats when she says one though
