Book #23 Doctor Who: System Wipe by Oli Smith
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory, end up in a deserted and destructed ruins of a future Chicago. Following a power reading, they get caught up in the events of what happened to future Earth and if they can rebuild it. But while the Doctor is doing this in a virtual reality world, Amy and Rory have a hard time with actual robots of destruction and recreation.
I enjoyed the flipping back and forth of the two perspectives as we learn more about Parralife and what happened on Earth. Seeing the Doctor make himself a video game avatar and complain about how levelling up in a role playing game would do them no good at solving the breaking of pixels was fun as a gamer. But I also enjoyed the idea that these video game characters who were abandoned by human players got a chance to still exist as entities in the game. I think as gamers we like to picture what the characters do after the games and what they would do if a code destroyed the game. Blondie was a great foil to the Doctor, but why there was a need for even a small kiss on the cheek at the end, I don’t know.
Amy and Rory have a rougher go as they are found by a rogue robot who offers to help. But helping also means leaving the Doctor since he can’t be unplugged until he reaches a save point. Darryl then explains that he is not like the incoming army of destructive robots and that the way the world was destroyed was by those robots so new robots could come in and rebuild. A great idea, I think and a cool ending as we learn the characters in the game can embody the robots and rebuild the Earth like the game, but then we get to the part of the novel that never gets explained.
Darryl is shocked to see Amy and Rory and learn they are humans. Of course this is because he was the AI in the game that created new personalities for the characters as the Game Master, but also it shows there are no humans and we never learn if there are humans where they are or if they will come back after the rebuilding of Earth. So it also makes it feel like the rebuilding will go to waste because obviously Amy and Rory aren’t staying. But hey, otherwise a fun adventure.
Overall Rating: 9/10
