What is the Compliment that Go Younjung, Who is Making Her Screen Debut with <Hunt>, Wants to Hear the Most on Set?
Interview with Esquire Korea | 2022.07.20
Q : During the video interview, you seemed particularly embarassed when you see yourself in old drama. I guess you were awkward with monitoring.
A : As an actor, monitoring is essential. I watch it (my performance) on set and on air. Every time I monitor, I feel regretful because I think, "I could have done a little better". It's okay to watch the entire work, but it's strange to watch a video clip that's edited to show only me like that. It's so ticklish that I can't watch it.
Q : Have you ever searched your own name to see what the reaction (of the audience) would be?
A : Yes (laughs). OTT dramas don't have that, but dramas that air on TV can check the viewers' reactions in real time. When I watch them, I feel like I'm watching the drama with a lot of people even though I'm watching it alone at home, so it's interesting. When I see comments saying that my acting is good, I feel happy by myself.
Q : I'm curious as to why you choose <Hunt> as your first film debut.
A : It would be more accurate to say that I didn't choose <Hunt>, but rather <Hunt> choose me (laughs). It might be obvious, but I auditioned. I had to show a scene where Jo Yoojung drinks at a street food stall and spits out sharp lines. Since the script given to me for the audition didn't include the context, I think I used my imagination to create the character and set tone of the lines. I found out later when I received the entire script, but Jo Yoojung was a stronger and more solid character that I had imagined. When I heard the news that I had passed, it didn't feel real. I was dumbfounded, thinking, "I'm really going to make a movie with these people?"
Q : What kind of person is Jo Yoojung?
A : I can't tell you the details because it might be less fun if you know in advance, but she's a college student who gets caught up in the National Intelligence Service's spy-hunting operation. She's like a friend to Park Pyeongho and sometimes like a younger sibling. Since she's a mysterious character, I recommend you check out the screen to see for yourself what role Yoojung plays (laughs).
Q : Wasn't it difficult to play a character whose identity is unknown?
A : I thought about how to solve it. I met with the director or had script readings almost every week for two months before starting filming <Hunt>. I also asked for advice from other seniors at company dinners or on set, and the advice I got in common was, "Don't overcomplicate things, just keep it simple." If you stay true to the given scenes and lines, the character of Jo Yoojung will be complete before you know it.
Q : The 1980s setting of <Hunt> may seem unfamiliar to you
A : I tried to indirectly feel the atmosphere of the 1980s by looking at old movies and dramas. It wasn't an era where you could quickly acquire a lot of information and culture through the internet like it is now. When creating the character, I tried to highlight the pure and passionate side. I wanted to look at the various conflicts that had to be faced in a politically chaotic society from a different perspective than the National Intelligence Service agents.
Q : You said earlier that the director helped you a lot. What specifically was helpful?
A : It was much easier for me to understand because he explained it from the perspective of an actor. For example, he said "I understand what you meant when you said that, but I think it would be sadder if you were a little more bland". The advice came from the director's many experiences as an actor, so it went right into my head. My role (appearance) is not long, it's a short one, impactful role that hits and leaves, so I wasn't able to be on set with him for many times, but I was able to learn a lot while filming <Hunt>, so it was great.
Q : Can you give me an example (of what you learned)?
A : Even on days when I didn't have any filming, I often went to the set. I was really curious about how other people acted. One thing that surprised me was that senior Lee Jungjae really practiced his script a lot before filming. He constantly thought about his character. Seeing that made me reflect and stimulate myself, and I wanted to emulate him. I learned how heavy each line of the dialogue is.
Q : Do you tend to get absorbed in the roles you take on?
A : It's not always like that, but there are certain scenes that I find myself looking at more often. I look at the shooting schedule and wait for the shooting with the feeling of counting down. I find myself mumbling the lines of those scenes without realizing it, even in normal times.
Q : What kind of scene was that in <Hunt>?
A : It was the food stall scene I acted out when I auditioned. I ran a lot of simulations in my head before going to the filming set. Should I drink soju with my right hand or left hand? Where should I look when I drink? Which look would suit Yoojung better, dishelved or upright? I even worried about the timing of the snacks (laughs). In order to better express the character, I improvised and added ad-libs that weren't in the original script. The director was satisfied and said it was okay. I was proud that the result turned out well because I put a lot of thought into it.
Q : On the other hand, were there any moments that were difficult to film?
A : It may be different for each actor, but I can't hit. It's easier for me to get hit instead. If I hit lightly, It'll be obvious, so I have to do it well the first time and get the okay, but I just can't seem to raise my hand.
Q : After <Sweet Home>, you appeared in front of the camera in <Hunt> as well, looking far from glamorous. Even when acting the same way, if you try to look cool, it shows, but when I saw Jo Yoojung I didn't feel that at all.
A : Other people may not know, but I know myself well. Regardless of whether I act well or not, I don't feel good when I see myself being self-conscious of the camera on the monitor. I think that means I'm not faithful to my acting. I've never worried about ruining myself (appearance) while acting. On the contrary, I look the worst when I act in a way that doesn't fit the situation. I think it's better to be natural in everything.
Q : You're just starting to build your filmography, but is there a genre that you feel particularly suited to?
A : I haven't acted in a melodrama yet, but the most fun I've had so far has been when I've filmed an action scene. I worked in a green chroma key studio for 4 nights and 5 days for <Alchemy of Souls>. I was hanging on wires, flying around and swinging a sword, but after CG work, it turned into a flashy action scene. It was a new experience.
Q : How do you want audiences to perceive <Hunt>?
A : Above all, I hope they enjoy the movie itself. I think that <Hunt> will be even more interesting if you focus on the complex relationships and subtle psychological changes between the characters within the fast-paced story. Even people like me who haven't experienced the 1980s will be able to watch it without difficulty.
Q : Lastly, I'm curious to know what kind of compliment actress Go Younjung feels the best when she hears it?
A : "Today's filming was really good. Thanks to you, I think I had fun filming." The compliments I hear from the actors and staff who work hard with me on set are the most touching. It makes me feel like I've done my part. I think that's why i keep wanting to go to the set and stay there for a long time.
