(Set after the events of Trolls 1 to 3) Branch gets curious after he finds out how big of an age gap John Dory has compared to the rest of his siblings. It doesn't help when his other brothers give him incomplete and inconsistent details about their younger years. They never expected what they find out would shake the very foundation of their family as they know it. (Or a little AU I have where John Dory being "The Old One" takes a very serious turn)

Like a completely normal adult person, after watching the new trolls movie, I obsessively started putting together the brothers' backstory, the deeper reasons for their separation as well as how that all took place without disregarding the fact that they were trapped in the troll tree, which of course evolved into a fic in (forever) progress... yeah

Anyway, even though they aren't actively in the story much, i needed to design the parents, so uh meet Rosiepuff's daughter, Tulip, and her husband Branch.

I designed them based on the brothers' adult looks and in Tulip's case also on her mom's.

Finally got around to finalizing my Brozone parents designs. This is Bay and Twiggy, and I love them both so much! Always got a two mom vibe from our boys, and I will take any excuse to draw lesbians in love. I think I’ll do a bit more about their backstory/ why they aren’t in the boy’s lives anymore.

This is before they get Rhonda so they've mostly been hiding out in abandoned buildings, in the trees, and in underground burrows

bit of Brozone family backstory for Reverse Age AU! (yes first the wild robot trailer destroys me hence the song choice) more info under the cut for what I have so far

Back in the day... Oldest sibling Branch is protective and a good role model, he has a good group of friends, but still always makes time for his younger brothers. Being the oldest has given him more responsibilities, but he has the support to keep him from being overwhelmed. He and several of his friends created Kismet and were very successful for several years. Second oldest Floyd is still more on the sensitive side, but when he tells people to take a breath and stop fighting people actually listen to him. Enjoys songwriting and actually wrote a handful of Kismet's songs. Also... they never expect the quiet ones to throw down. STILL middle child Clay is hyper and hard to get to stay still... unless its for books. Big fan of almost all books, and loves teaching younger trolls to read just like Reed. Also a natural at dance and would often crash Kismet rehearsals with his own moves just for Kismet to be like "hey this kid has the right idea actually". Second youngest Bruce knows he is adorable and uses it to his advantage. He is able to get away with a lot more because he was the baby for so long. A very affectionate kid under his cheeky demeanor. Definition of knife cat meme. Mercury and Reed were loving and involved parents and also well-liked by the community, Reed being a teacher for young trollings and Mercury being the reason the Pop trolls know about the other genres earlier than canon, as well as the ACTUAL history of the different genres. The boys are aware they are pop-rock, but aren't aware they are cousins to Rock royalty. Both were very supportive and proud of Kismet. Mercury and Reed were also some of the trolls who helped make sure everyone in the tree had a place to hide the night before Trollstices, and did patrols around the tree. Unfortunately the Trollstice Eve after John Dory's egg appeared but hadn't hatched yet, Mercury and Reed were caught and killed by Chef, leaving the boys orphaned and with only Rosiepuff to help watch them until Branch would be old enough to take custody in a couple years. When youngest baby brother John Dory hatches, Branch becomes overprotective and barely leaves his side, the other bros not much better. John Dory as the baby of the baby of the family has a weird want to have things be in order and on schedule or else he gets upset. Doesn't like to get dirty and will draw the same thing 50 times before deciding if it is worthy enough to gift to one of his brothers. The brothers form Brozone to keep some normalcy and happiness with their little family, knowing how happy their parents used to be when they all sang together, and John Dory joins once he hits toddler years. And then the escape happens.

I tried to make a kind of family tree, the only problem is that I don't know all the names of the elder Bruce 🤔

Hey remember when I said we'd get into Lilypad's tragic life-ending freak accident later? Later is now.

Lilypad was swinging around a little too fast on the troll tree, grabbed onto an unsteady branch which then broke, and couldn't untangle their hair quickly enough to grab onto another branch and save themself. They fell what was quite a distance for a troll and landed their head on a rock with a branch on top of them.

They blacked out, but didn't immediately die. Instead, they woke up and asked about John Dory's safety because he had been swinging right behind them. Once they're assured that he's safe, they black out again and are taken to the medical pod, where they die the next day.

Upon their death, their wife Magma goes gray, which is very rare for trolls that still have family to remain hopeful for. The reason this happens is that Magma has always had kind of shaky mental health, being anxious and high strung a good deal of the time. Lilypad balanced her out, and with them gone she has no faith that she can keep her remaining family safe. So it's not that she doesn't care about her kids, it's that she's now overcome with fear of the many many bad things that could happen to any of them and doesn't know how to cope.

As a result of this, Rosiepuff takes care of Magma most days while John Dory must take over raising his little brothers. It's really tough, and each of the brothers grieves in their own way: Bpruce by acting out and leaving the pod to spend time with friends more often, Clay by acting as comic relief for the family to try and dissipate their (and his own) anxiety and grief, and Floyd by trying to be perfect and nonconfrontational, going as far as to be the mediator for his brothers.

As for John Dory, he heavily blames himself for the accident and the aftermath. He goes over what he could have done to save Lilypad or prevent the accident over and over in his head. It's not healthy, but when has this OCD bitch ever been healthy?

Whatttt Finny drawing trolls angst no wayyyy

The night they returned to Grandma Rosiepuff for good is certainly not one any of the boys will forget. The thunderstorms, the terrifying uncertainty, it all made our four boys petrified of what was to come.

Although John could barely comprehend himself what exactly was going on, there was one thing different. They now had a tiny life on their hands, and no matter what they wanted that little egg was going to need help. And John could NOT let his brothers know, no matter what. He had to keep them calm, and safe, no matter how scared they all were.

After everyone else close to John turns on him, he's left with no other option but to leave his parent's home and seek out their Grandmother, whom they would occasionally visit on holidays.

After losing their mother (who as far as John knew, was not even aware of Branch's existence based on the time of her passing) their father mysteriously dissappears after falling victim to his grief and leaves behind a small, insignificant blue egg. Only a poorly written letter was found as an apology to John for a lifetime of plight.

Grandma Rosiepuff knows her daughters death was difficult on her immediate family, but did not think it would go this far. As an otherworldly promise to her tragically lost daughter, Grandma Rosiepuff takes in the five children, being their last living relative from the tragedy that was the Troll Tree.

AHHHH Holy shit I love drawing trolls angst THEMMM POOR JOHN this is all purely my own headcanon BTW! I designed Grandma Rosiepuff to look a bit like Rose from Steven Universe. She has that vibe it's very fitting. The trolls universe is so like masking of the actual issues in the first movie its insane??? Yay everyone's happy but we totally weren't being held captive for who knows how long but that's just life :D and Rosiepuff would just be used to it, as sad as that is. "Of course my family" she's probably thinking. Their might be some sort of lingering curse around their blood. They might just be a doomed race. WHO KNOWS!
