After fixing my teeth, I went to Turin and stayed at F.'s place. His apartment is big; only his room is twice the size of where I live. He shares it with two other people, and the dynamic between them is interesting.

I spent three days in a bender. I drank a bit too much. I did my homework. A bottle of red sparkling wine exploded in my bag. I made my friends come with me to a Greek vases exposition because I had to write an essay about any Ancient Greek artefact. I smoked a bit too much. I only took cold showers.

F. and E. live very bohemianly. Their apartments are messy, old but not ornate. F. paints a lot of watercolor landscapes and hangs them on his walls, his housemates find things on the street: a sign that says Parafarmacia, a newspaper stand, a painted chair. Their lives seem to be very carefree, less programed than I could have ever imagined. I wish I could wing it like they do, facing every day without a to do list, without the anxiety of having to get things done.

I guess the only thing I miss from last year is the sense of warmth you could summon in any room, at any time. I try to have people over as much as possible, but it is never spontaneous. It is never: "you could come to my place tonight, we can have dinner." And it is always: "when are you free?". There is a considerable difference, a stiffness that separates the decision making act from the act itself.

Turin surprised me too. It is much more alive than I remembered: the last time I had been there, it was for New Year's, with my parents. It was miserable, cold, brutalist. Oh how things change when the people around you change. They showed me a side of the city I find so appealing, so magical.

I bought another Pavese book, The Devil in the Hills, and I finished it today on the way to the library. Last year, when I discovered Pavese had killed himself, I cried all night, for seemingly no reason. Today I realized it might have been because, despite all that he has done, he was still eaten alive by his feelings.

One of my poems was published a few days ago, and at the end of December it will be published in print too. It's my first time for that, and I am proud of it, and people around me told the writing was good. But once the rush of excitement was over, all I could think about was the future, what comes next, and an indelible feeling of being a fraud. Are people just being nice to me? I used to think getting published would solve this kind of doubt: if a stranger finds the poem good, then there must be at least a word that is worth saving.

It is always: – What is next? Where do we go from here?

And it is never: – I like this place. I will rest for a while, I can let my roots grow firm in the soil.

Because what if there is better, out there? What if there is more? I want more, I am hungry for more. I have starved myself for so long and now I am hungry, always hungry. Greedy. I call it ontological dissatisfaction. It eats me from the inside out.

Tomorrow I have my first galop. It's a funny way to call a midterm exam. I do not feel ready.
